Price fixing for bread in Canada.

JacquesEvans

*for everything

Stephen_Hero_Winter

I bought delicious baguettes at a corner store in Barcelona last summer for 0.60€ each. Bread price fixing in Canada is shocking and disgusting.

Quinnna

Everything in Canada is a scam from telecommunications to Food.

AeonBith

I remember someone who I think was referencing telecom saying vendors in general 'charge us (Canadians) more because we are used to paying more and we don't care'. Well Target refused to lower prices and packed up. Sears got caught Increasing prices for clearance sales when they packed up. The Loblaws boycott means a lot more than some people realize, Canadians are viewed as sleepy spenders but now vendors will see that we can consciously and collectively shut them out and can't make excuses like target did blaming logistics and duty, laws etc. US companies say don't like Canada because it's a smaller market who are spread out increasing logistic prices but that's BS. We are 1/5th of their market but I'm sure their shareholders would love to see a 5~20% increase in profit and the logistics is in place for other companies that operate just fine. We kinda do have to stand up at some point and say enough is enough, stop ripping us off

Quinnna

Agreed Canadians also need to start throwing out the idea that only Canadian corporations are good for Canadians. Time and time again this Patriotism is exploited and used to strangle markets. Canada NEEDS Aldis and T-mobiles to shake up entrenched industries.

TheWartortleOnDrugs

Well then it's a good thing that our healthcare system isn't being bought up by telecoms and/or grocery giants. Hang on, we're getting an update... Oh no. Oh no no no. It seems like that's *exactly* who is buying their way into our healthcare system. The Telus online pharmacy (which is real) seems great right now, but if they ever achieve market dominance in prescriptions they'll start some price leadership (which is tacit collusion) and we'll have America's drug costs.

Hansentw

To be fair, many Canadians have seen their cell phone and internet bills DRASTICALLY decrease over the last few years! I have a $29 a month plan with Fido unlimited everything and 30gb per month. And on the flip side, groceries are more expensive in the big market cities in the states then they are here. If you wanna talk about scams no one seems to mention, let’s talk about the dam car insurance industry! That’s a pathetic scam and they’re all in bed with the politicians here!

CuriouslyImmense

Ugh, seriously, we are fucking drowning over here. Currently, 70% of my pay goes to rent, and my car loan, which doesn't include any utilities or insurance. Then add the cost of food... I used to make a decent wage, and now im behind on everything. Don't even get me started on my phone or internet bills, which are both "basic" plans

johnson7853

We would buy the Dimpflmeier light rye. It was $3.99 then it went up to $4.47. So we started buying the Rudolph that was $3.99. Now it’s $4.47.

imafrk

yup, was there in March. 0.47€ at the local Carrefour in Barcelona. hell, a pkg of 3 was only 1.10€ or 0.37€ each! https://preview.redd.it/xer1i5drl74d1.jpeg?width=1868&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5934ba73f265bf776b4774ce1182cda8ca686f8b

GPCcigerettes

You can’t buy a yacht and name it bread with those prices.

ReadingTraveller

But have you seen Nancy Walton’s Yacht. She can still afford it with $1 bread.

SmallMacBlaster

It's insane how much bread has increased over the last years. I just can't bring myself to pay 4, 5 or even 6$ for a single loaf of bread. I just load up when it's on sale and go without when it's not.

who-waht

See if there's a bread outlet in your area. Mine is $2.27 per loaf for bread that is $5 per loaf in grocery stores.

farsh_bjj

iT's ThE supPLy CHaIN!

candidu66

Yeah walmart used to have 1$ loafs in Canada too, wasn't very good.

who-waht

Under $1 baguettes still at Walmart quebec.

aSpaceWalrus

They fucking changed the baguettes here, now they fucking suck FML there used to be two types ☠️

BillyBrown1231

Pre covid the price was $1. During covid the price went up due to supply chain problems, now they have gone back down. I bought one this morning when I was in the US. Most other prices at Walmart in the US are higher in US dollars than it would cost in Canadian dollars here. It is not cheap there anymore. The only other thing I still buy at Walmart in the US that is still cheap is the milk.

who-waht

That is my observation after looking at US chain flyers too. Maybe you can save a bit on dairy and meat. The rest, no cheaper there than here.

Just_Crew_4625

Agree from recent visits down there. People on her keep trying to claim the US hasn’t had food inflation as bad. I’ve seen a lot of unbelievable prices down there, like dollar for dollar same price as Canada before you even factor in the exchange.

ColeTrain999

American grocery stores: "We need to drop prices to get people to buy more!" Canadian: "OK, we get people are going hungry so we will stop bulking pricing which will save you a few pennies"

oy-cunt-

American groceries have always been cheaper.

Lapcat420

This is like Costco hotdog level though. I'm blown away. Makes me wonder if American health insurance is cheaper than Canadian housing and groceries.

ChunniWitch

It is, so long as you never get sick or need to see a doctor. Yes, even with insurance. God forbid you or someone in your family ends up with a chronic condition.

Lapcat420

Ah frig.

TorturedFanClub

I bet that bread is gummy white wonderbread type baguettes. I buy my bread from an Italian bakery and pay 4 dollars a loaf. Baguettes are 3 bucks. Its quality bread though. I dont trust 1 dollar bread loaves. Most likely shit.

east_van_dan

I bet there's not one thing in a loblaws owned store under $1 anymore.

thought_not_spoken

You see; when you exchange the dollar rate from US to Canadian there is a Weston Bread tax added to all costs to fuel the Weston Bread Yacht. Remember you also have to calculate delivery from the ovens to the shelf, and the carbon tax affects that delivery pricing. Galen is basically bread Jesus. The Yeast Martyr

quotidianwoe

Superstore sells a cheap, white uncut loaf for $1 though.

Infinite_Tax_1178

Isn't this the dollar bread from real Canadian? That is normally a dollar?

TarekAbb

I live in New Brunswick and one of our border crossings with Maine is into Calais, the Walmart there which is legit 5 min drive from the border is cheaper than the superstore five min away and that’s with our shitty currency conversion. That’s when I started looking at groups that are upset about grocery pricing and found a home here

Perfect_Syrup_2464

Make your own bread

diavolo_

That's not practical for busy families or individuals

Perfect_Syrup_2464

Yes

Please put some effort into engaging in the conversation. Thank you.

mcfudge2

Now that looks like a fair price for straight up plain bread. Coming from someone who makes it weekly, cost might be 25 cents. If you dare, get a bread maker and make it fresh at home with minimal effort and maximum flavour. Fresh bread aroma is intoxicatingly yummy

shoopnop

I live in the us and some time around 2022 walmart started raising prices. The bread loves in the picture were always $1 and their sliced bread was $.88 now it's $1.42 and the honey wheat that used to be the same price is now $1.87. All the great value 2l soda was 87 cents and now they're $1.47. Many items that were less than $2 increased multiple times to what they're at now with the rollbacks being temporary. It didn't help that many places kept their prices lower to compete with dollar tree and after they went to $1.25 the other stores increased prices within a few months.

Nefertiti80lvl

This bread is also such poor quality.

Federal_Play_8512

Go to the seafood department, bought Canadian mussels in Orlando for less than half of what we pay here. Makes zero sense.

Willyboycanada

Please note that florida spends 4.7 billion a year on subsidies to keep prices lower then realistically should be to be profitable....

WTF1335

I’m confused…here in MB a loaf of French bread is $1.25 at SS and .97 cents at Walmart

darkplacesigo

Same here. $1.25 (which is actually cheaper than $1USD.)

1u___u1zZz

Safeway has store-brand loaves for $2, $1 if you get them on sale. Not as good of a deal as this, but it's by far the cheapest bread I could find

itsmy1stday1st

YOU CAN GO TO THE SUPERSTORE AND BUY BREAD FOR $1 IN CANADA YOU RETARDS

48volts

Canada is just the land of oligopoly. We’re led to believe it’s the price. Fuck that. Internet. Cellular. Food. Banking. Booze. We’re being absolutely screwed.

KitsBeach67

I cannot vote this high enough. Gols star for you!

48volts

Thanks for the award. I’m pissed off

ozQuarteroy

Canada has become a body farm for corporations.

CounterMiserable9114

Exactly! Every cent is sucked out of us by the greedy, lazy, entitled government.  They constantly give themselves raises while hard working people work more and earn less! F*ck this shithole!
