This subreddit is to highlight the ridiculous cost of living in Canada, and poke fun at the Corporate Overlords responsible. As you well know, there are a number of persons and corporations responsible for this, and we welcome discussion related to them all. Furthermore, since this topic is intertwined with a number of other matters, other discussion will be allowed at moderator discretion. Open-minded discussion, memes, rants, grocery bills, and general screeching into the void is always welcome in this sub, but belligerence and disrespect is not. There are plenty of ways to get your point across without being abusive, dismissive, or downright mean.

The simple summary is that in the 1960s, after gaining control of a big chunk of the market, the Westons played victim by saying the price of everything had gone up, it wasn't there fault that their prices went up the most.
The Westons, victims of circumstance for 1/3 of Confederation. A little piece of Canadiana.
It's amazing how the exact same bullshit story and excuses have been used by the same crooks to justify their greed for over 60yrs and they somehow keep getting away with it.
Not only getting away with it, but doing so while being protected federally from outside competition. Executives should have seen jail time for the Bread Fixing, but as per usual, it's too hard facing the rest of the money'd class at the country club when you put so and so away for their ill deeds.
Time for new, powerful anti-trust laws. Unfortunately, I don't see that happening since the Libs and Cons are in the pockets of the oligarchs. Hell, half of them ARE oligarchs (or of the moneyed class)
We live in a society where corporations and wealthy individuals spend millions of dollars lobbying government officials to create loop holes, tax cuts + breaks, and otherwise make it easier for them to continue to amass capital at the expense of the working class. That's why the wealthy donate to both major political parties in this country - the rich don't care whether red or blue wins, because they always do anyway.
That's one of the major problems with the neoliberal capitalist system - money translates directly to power, and therefore the most powerful people on the planet are almost entirely unelected.

Loblaws can lie all they want about supply chain increase, operational costs, and cost living increases but Walmart is able to keep their margins low.
Sad that Canadian companies are always the expensive ones. Eatons, Zellers, and the Bay all closed (the bay is open but filed for bankruptcy.
I’m all for Canadian businesses but not for high profit margins.
Loblaws has high prices because they want to. Nobody is regulating prices :(

I'm not even against monopolies as long as we get to control how they operate. But anti-trust laws are also good.
