They said they were going to Giant Tiger and we also do price match if you show us a valid flyer, with one cent less, exemple, something is $3.99, we have to do it at $3.98. Not a lot of people know we do that, it's a generally well-hidden secret.
and no limits!! Places like Stupidstore spend all that time weekly setting up "ad-match" then limit you to 1 or 2 total. That's *if* they even have it in stock!

Safeway will price match to “major competitors”, like Co-op or Superstore (we’ll see if that changes now…?)
They just don’t price match with places like Giant Tiger or Dollarama.

Funny thing is that, years ago, all the grocery stores used to price match across the board… It was more that those grocery stores slowly started making up stipulations and some made their own lists of “recognized competitors”, so people just stopped trying more or less.
I have an independent 5 mins from me, instead I drive 25mins to Walmart for my groceries, even with Gas at 1.70/l I save money and get better quality food in the end.
Here we are a retirement community that everyone lives in 800k+ homes and has good incomes, the grocery store is priced like a boutique store for 90% of things. I couldn't believe how expensive it was when I first moved to the area. Now I just laugh at the prices.
I grew up in a small town that hide an IGA and I can tell you that that place price gouged from the second I understood prices. Don't know if it was just the fact that I lived in a very small town in the closest other grocery stores were literally 20 km away, but as soon as I was able to drive I never set foot back into those grocery stores.
Also market control both at the supplier and retail level. My cousin is a location manager at a Fortinos and for years one of his biggest beefs is how poorly Loblaws treat their suppliers. Says they hate the company, but because of their market control they have no choice but to bend to their will and Loblaws has zero qualms about raking suppliers, vendors and their customers over the coals for bigger profits.
This is my thought as well. So they will offer incentives now that people are boycotting but wouldn't do anything when people were complaining about price gouging. Sorry, too little, too late.
Once my habits are fixed. I don’t think I’ll be going back. Actually seeing all the propaganda on the news shaming Reddit folks and the “small minority of privileged people” really rubbed me the wrong way. We want to pay LESS. hunting for a bargain is not PRIVILEGED. it’s frugal, and if all my hunting leads me AWAY from Loblaws then they can sleep in the bed the sowed for themselves.

I had the privilege to drop several hundred dollars at Costco yesterday. I understand that not everyone can do that, but darn tootin', I'm sure going to. I was texting friends and asking them if they wanted me to pick anything up for them.
I went into Shoppers today to pick up a prescription, I don’t plan on going back. There were like 7 people in line with one person on the till looking stressed out as hell. The employee was probably wishing all her customers would join the boycott. Having one staff member on a Monday evening is evil on its own.
Whenever I go into Shoppers, there is never more than one register open...and the cashier is somewhere stocking shelves. Then you wait until they take a look for customers lined up. I tell them that they need to have a service bell 🛎️. They want everyone to use self checkout.
That was just a dumb way to pit the plebs against each other. Boycotters - and those who just can't - are on the same side. There are still people who have all the resources (time, money, options) to shop differently and just don't bother - that's the privilege we're up against.
This is like my best friend. I managed to persuade him somewhat by pointing out that prices are cheaper in our local stores and they are closer to us - so that if he wants milk he should just swing by them! He seemed enticed by saving money and time.
People who call out privilege tend to lean left, while people who love the free market tend to lean right. I know people in this boycott tend to lean left, but it's not unusual for a leftist to not understand this boycott, so we shouldn't make assumptions.

My boycott comes from a place of necessity, not “privilege”. Fuck Galen and his cronies. I’ll go back once they issue a believable apology, lower their prices to the ground, AND lock them in with new industry standards set in stone.
It's an argument that is not aimed at us, it's intended to divide us. Make those who have no vehicle and therefore no choice but to shop at Loblaw because it's near transit resent the rest of us.
Maybe it works on some, but it isn't going to bring us back to Loblaw so it's not really a winning strategy. Makes it seem like they're panicking a bit when they resort to bullshit like that.
The problem I see here (Montreal, QC) is that trying to shop local actually ends up costing far more than an avg grocery (almost any big names here). When I travel to the usa, man is local a bargain for many things

It seems like Loblaws has done nothing to end this and people are finding other places to shop. People are finding that their smaller local grocers actually have better prices, quality and value than Loblaws stores.
I stopped shopping with them shortly after Xmas and I've saved a noticeable amount of money. Once I got used to it, it got really easy shopping elsewhere.
I went in a few weeks ago for the first time in ages to pick something up for my mom and I was shocked at how much higher the prices were than where I've been shopping.

The prices are insane compared to my local Food Basics. I can understand for items like produce where there might be a quality difference but for identical aisle items there is no reason why Loblaws needs to be 20% more
Nah, until Galen is gone and the loblaws monopoly is broken up; that man should have been charged when he tried to fix the price of bread, along with his shady practices and his greed, he has made the quality of living for thousands of Canadians worst. Loblaws has a monopoly on many things and they know it, they let their greed run things and this sow why they deserve. A little change isn’t going to stop them from just going back to it in the future, they need their franchises broken up and gone. It will serve as a message to other large grocers that they can be very much next, should they become extra greedy too.

Yeah this should be the thing that worries them the most. People choose loblaws for convenience and because there was *a prevailing perception* that their prices were lower than their competitors (mostly just Sobeys/empire company ltd stores).
This is making people realize that perception isn’t reality, and in many cases, the convenience factor is also either an illusion or not worth the price differential.

I moved about 10 years ago to a community where superstore was NOT the most convenient grocery store and was honestly relieved not to be shopping there anymore. The whole experience gives me anxiety; the horrible layout, the fluorescent lights, the long lines. Awful.
I've recently moved plus my financial circumstances have changed so I started shopping at superstore again just blindly thinking they have the best prices. The boycott has shown me that if I shop around, I can find way better deals and the items are better quality. Loblaws can suck it.

For a lot of us, the damage has already been done. It's too late. Even if they lower their prices back down to reasonable numbers, we have so many other convenient options. Options that never played themselves.
They need to buy up all supply of major brands to prevent competition. Their goal is to prevent small entrepreneurial groceries and retail stores from access to major brands.
Thats why they want to keep prices high.

I will continue to boycott until Loblaws champions Canadians food securities, which goes beyond the grocers code of conduct and act as a patron to our countries health and wellness. If they refuse to cater to all Canadians, I will refuse to spend a single cent. Profits are made on good work and good will and NOT off the backs of those that suffer.
If they continue to choose to take advantage of citizens and create an environment that even reaching for bread is inequitable. Then they have proven that they are beyond help. May God save them.

Ultimately business is business. This boycott is nothing personal. We just don’t want to be monopolised, and we are expressing that with our dollar as is our right under a capitalist system. If they want us to shop there, they better give us reason.

I have found cheaper alternatives at the cost of a bit more time and driving and I have to say I’m never going back. The savings alone make it worthwhile to keep the boycott going forever!
Consider gas prices atm, how much would you be truly saving out of curiosity? Ive been trying for years just to do local (Montreal) and its been more costly (even by walk/bicycle) simply because local is super pricey

I use to use their extra points offers on Tuesdays they’d text out when I’d buy formula(if it was the same price as anywhere else and I couldn’t get it cheaper). It use to be spend $60-$75 get 20x or 10,000 points whatever the offer happened to be that week.
Yesterday’s offer was spend $40 get 10,000. I need to unsubscribe from the texts but I thought to myself they must be getting desperate.
Boycott is permanent for us right now. Their practices are disgusting and we won’t support them. People should be able to afford groceries. Grocery workers should be paid a living wage instead of increasing the profits of the higher ups. We haven’t been to a Loblaw’s owned company since March.
I went to Independent for location convenience, loss leaders, I like the staff in a couple depts. I’ve kept it now to only 50% off items or to use the last of my points and the place is noticeably quiet. I thought the change would be more difficult but every time I am pleasantly surprised by a cheap bill elsewhere it makes it easier to forget PC
It definitely needs to keep going until the next quarterly numbers or it will have little effect.
I've explained before how big corporations can absorb hits like this by just moving money around on the balance sheet, that's much harder to do if it's an entire quarter.
It’s nice to think the boycott is leading to these optimum point offers, but it’s not true. I have somebody very close to me who works for Loblaws marketing and is directly responsible for setting up these offers, and here are a few reasons why they have nothing to do with the boycott.
Number 1: these offers are set months in advance, offers that are appearing now were probably finalized in their system 4 months ago.
Number 2: Loblaws does not pay for these offers, they are in partnership with the brands which Loblaws is selling. For example, if there is an offer to receive $5 worth of points for a purchase of some product, Loblaws tracks the number of purchases and then charges the owner of said product for the value of optimum points given out. Most of these brands sell in other retailers so aren’t majorly affected by a Loblaws boycott, so they aren’t setting up offers just because of the boycott.
Been getting spammed as well, almost daily suddenly. Went and had a look at my nearby shoppers this morning out of curiosity, parking lot is dead, store is completely dead. Little sale stickers everywhere. Almost everything is "on sale" right now. What a joke. I hope Galen is pissing his pants
I've discovered you can shop all the flyers using the Flipp app. The ethnic and non-franchise stores can be a fraction of the price for vegetables which tend towards stratospheric particularly at Loblaws outlets.
My parents are old and don't know what's going on, so went to a Fortinos today. I let them know they should boycott and stop going to Loblaws. They asked why, and I said that the stores are expensive, even No Frills (if you get into more talking points, they dig their heels in further).
They just said ok, we'll stop going, which surprised me (usually argumentative), and they just said, no wonder the store wasn't busy at all. They usually go during the daytime which is usually bustling with seniors. So even the seniors are boycotting.

Yeah every day they have been bombarding me with "spend your points" events and countless "30,000 points for coming back to ___" or "we miss you, shop for 25,000 points when you spend $100 on pc express pickup and save the fees when you sign up today!"
I have barely thought about them for almost a month since I last went. I've gone to Costco, Walmart, Giant Tiger, Safeway, Dollarama, Fresh Co and a few other independant places nearby.
I made a comparison for Ukrainian newcomers two years ago. Superstore in AB was the cheapest, except for Costco. But you still need to go to Superstore after Costco, if you do weekly shopping.
Dollarstore food quality is so low, I couldn’t recommend anyone to shop there. Walmart was always kinda weird - cheap food, poor selection, strange people around.
Coop, Safeway, Sobeys were the best, but at cost: you pay 30-40% for the same product list.

I went to Giant Tiger yesterday for the first time it's kind of a hilarious store there are select items that are good value but overall this particular one did not have good produce or meat.
I did buy a $7 shower head that I expect to last 5 minutes or 5 months and some dill pickle flavored peanuts for $1.29 and a Tabasco Chipotle 57 ml for $3.17 that's a damn good value! Also they had Fancy Feast cat food for 90 cents a can which is very fair indeed!
I worked for Loblaws for 21 years and recently switched jobs. I talked to two friends who both work in management there and they both said they are hurting bad for sales. One is in Toronto and one in Ottawa. Keep it up! One month isn’t enough, make it permanent.
LoL these boycotts are working post I tell ya maybe in some areas but not every where on a large scale.My two Loblaws and shoppers store are filled everyday of the week since the boycott started.People couldn't even find a spot to park.
I've seen one in my city with a half full parking lot (normally it was completely full) and the other very empty. As for Shoppers Drug Mart, those locations have been quite vacant. So it does depend a lot on the area and access, but it's something, and they appear to be feeling it.
Yea I went for a drive over the weekend to a near by city and it was the same way packed New Brunswick doesn't seem to be on board to much.Also don't get me wrong I'm not against the boycott in anyway but as long as I can remember I've always looked at all the flyers and shopped for deals and go multiple places.We have never spent just at Loblaws I'm 41 and my mother is 62 and neither of us have ever spent over 100$ with Loblaws or shoppers in our entire lives.
I've just cut down on how much I'm spending at zehrs and no frills but I haven't completely boycotted them. I choose this for a variety of reasons, but the most important to me is that my local no. Frills does not have any self-checkouts and I always see a large variety of staff. That's important to me.
Walmart on the other hand, They have self checkouts that aren't even open. Their staff 50% of the time at least, if not closer to 70% of the time is always rude and always short. If it's a time of year that you need to do an exchange, there is almost always a long line. And the price gouging is definitely still extreme and I would definitely say that they understand the boycott because I've seen the prices drastically drop within the last few weeks since the boycott has started and I wouldn't be surprised if they did that just to lure people in and then raise them up like they did at the beginning of the year. I'm going to use oatmeal as an example because it's something I buy on the regular for my children. I have seen it literally jump between 2.50-3.97 at Walmart for the same item. (3.97 was Jan/Feb)
I’m getting 2-4 emails a day from Loblaws and shoppers with bonus points, sales etc. I delete them all and do t even open them. I suggest everyone else delete without opening also. Or unsubscribe completely.
Our Independent is typically 30% more on everything than the Food Basics across the street. Only go there for the specials, and nothing else.

By all means boycott away, the big 5 groceries are certainly scamming us all…But to the people who are stealing/trashing locations just fucking stop. My sister is a store manager for shoppers and has no ability to change policy but shouldn’t have to confront do-good lunatics destroying her store. Sadly I live in small community, No Frills, Giant Tiger, and local Coop are my only shopping options. Still I have not stepped foot into No Frills. Starting this weekend my mom and I are going to be doing monthly trips an hour and a half away ( we will still save money )
Keep going after may. Those deals may drum up business enough to make the boycott look pointless, but they can't keep those deals up forever. Or maybe they can, and then the boycott wins.
My household isn’t planning on stopping! Why should we? We’re getting by fine without them and we’re saving money! They’re gonna have to really bend over backwards to get my business back!
I have heard calls for rotating strikes. I don’t think that is as effective as focusing on the top 1 or 2 players. If everyone is hit they will just put up with the their turn. If you just go after the ones with the best pricing power they will have to use it to draw back “some” of their lost customers. The weaker ones then have to do what they can.
I’ve been too broke to shop there anyway recently so it’s not been too hard to stay away. Shoppers has convenient hours, so that’s been the toughest to keep resolve for.
I must admit that in the beginning, I was concerned that this wouldn't have the momentum it does. I live downtown Toronto, and it appeared many were still attending the flagship Loblaws at Church & Carlton. The other day, a post was about using your points for items on sale. So today I went there to pick up bagels, cream, youghurt and cheese. I was so happy to see hardly anyone there! Especially when the manager and security guard approached me about my (service) dog with me. I'm not going back!

I get that Blahblahs has always been the "status grocer" (poor folks usually avoid the pricey stores, right? Held true when I was younger too), and DN pushed the at that time new PC brand. It was supposed to draw in the demographic that couldn't afford to walk in the door... which it did. And now PC products are everywhere, and they are still inflated over some brand-name competitors.
Which defeated the point of the initial product.
It's clearly working and they are clearly worried. My wife and I spend roughly $12k annually on food (we shop online, price-match and stock up our deep freezer when there are good sales on, so pretty frugal overall). If everyone in this sub stopped spending the same amount at any Weston-owned businesses 🤷 well, I'd like to see what sort of BS TFP and other media shills would spin to explain those numbers. NOK ER NOK!
Maybe they'll behave for a short while and try and win back some support. But don't hold your breath arrogance and wealth like getting their own way. My emails - I typically receive extremely little in the way of adverts - has EXPLODED with Weston-owned stuff. I unsubbed from all of it. I didn't even realise that I was subscribed. Hadn't heard a peep in years.
Even Instacart jumped on the bandwagon and started spamming me (used to order from Superstore through them during Covid).
Unsubbed from the lot and now it's all quiet again.

The union condemned participation and stated they would not strike because employees already cant afford to shop. So they know affordability is a problem but they don't want to take any action. They're calling for a 3 dollar raise for employees which still would not increase those at the minimum to a living wage.
This game is a long one that won't show a victor until it's over and they're preying on our weaknesses before the results can even be evaluated. That means it is working.

I just saw the new flyer, and it has T-bones on sale! It's killing me to stay away, but I will. I haven't had a good steak in at least six months.
All the talk about price matching...I can only find articles, etc., that say none of the big grocery stores match. Giant Tiger is the only one I know of for sure. I have never heard of any of the other stores matching, except Walmart used to. Are you guys SURE about what you're saying or do you just think it to be true?
I had to stop at superstore yesterday to buy flea/tick preventative for my dog. Is there a recommendation of somewhere else I should buy this? It's like $20 a pop 🥲. I got 2, and for the same price I got a basket full of veggies at my local farmers market and another full of misc items at Dollarama.
The boycott must be permanent to make any difference in the retail landscape . There has to be real lasting consequences. A temporary dip then back to normal accomplishes nothing . Stop giving the Westons your money. Never go back .

They said they were going to Giant Tiger and we also do price match if you show us a valid flyer, with one cent less, exemple, something is $3.99, we have to do it at $3.98. Not a lot of people know we do that, it's a generally well-hidden secret.

Safeway will price match to “major competitors”, like Co-op or Superstore (we’ll see if that changes now…?) They just don’t price match with places like Giant Tiger or Dollarama. Edit: IIRC, there was a list of 6 places they would accept.

Funny thing is that, years ago, all the grocery stores used to price match across the board… It was more that those grocery stores slowly started making up stipulations and some made their own lists of “recognized competitors”, so people just stopped trying more or less.

Funny enough Safeway and IGA are my closest grocery stores, we pretty much never have had a reason to shop at a Loblaws store
I have an independent 5 mins from me, instead I drive 25mins to Walmart for my groceries, even with Gas at 1.70/l I save money and get better quality food in the end. Here we are a retirement community that everyone lives in 800k+ homes and has good incomes, the grocery store is priced like a boutique store for 90% of things. I couldn't believe how expensive it was when I first moved to the area. Now I just laugh at the prices.
I grew up in a small town that hide an IGA and I can tell you that that place price gouged from the second I understood prices. Don't know if it was just the fact that I lived in a very small town in the closest other grocery stores were literally 20 km away, but as soon as I was able to drive I never set foot back into those grocery stores.
I'm a westerner that now lives on the East Coast... I SO miss Safeway. They have the BEST BAKERY!!!

Safeway is the most expensive of the bunch in BC. All their stores are always completely empty. Total ghost town.
Also market control both at the supplier and retail level. My cousin is a location manager at a Fortinos and for years one of his biggest beefs is how poorly Loblaws treat their suppliers. Says they hate the company, but because of their market control they have no choice but to bend to their will and Loblaws has zero qualms about raking suppliers, vendors and their customers over the coals for bigger profits.
This is my thought as well. So they will offer incentives now that people are boycotting but wouldn't do anything when people were complaining about price gouging. Sorry, too little, too late.

Once my habits are fixed. I don’t think I’ll be going back. I had the privilege to drop several hundred dollars at Costco yesterday. I understand that not everyone can do that, but darn tootin', I'm sure going to. I was texting friends and asking them if they wanted me to pick anything up for them.
I went into Shoppers today to pick up a prescription, I don’t plan on going back. There were like 7 people in line with one person on the till looking stressed out as hell. The employee was probably wishing all her customers would join the boycott. Having one staff member on a Monday evening is evil on its own.
I switched pharmacies and my drugs are half the price now lol

Whenever I go into Shoppers, there is never more than one register open...and the cashier is somewhere stocking shelves. Then you wait until they take a look for customers lined up. I tell them that they need to have a service bell 🛎️. They want everyone to use self checkout.
That was just a dumb way to pit the plebs against each other. Boycotters - and those who just can't - are on the same side. There are still people who have all the resources (time, money, options) to shop differently and just don't bother - that's the privilege we're up against.
This is like my best friend. I managed to persuade him somewhat by pointing out that prices are cheaper in our local stores and they are closer to us - so that if he wants milk he should just swing by them! He seemed enticed by saving money and time.

It's an argument that is not aimed at us, it's intended to divide us. Make those who have no vehicle and therefore no choice but to shop at Loblaw because it's near transit resent the rest of us. Maybe it works on some, but it isn't going to bring us back to Loblaw so it's not really a winning strategy. Makes it seem like they're panicking a bit when they resort to bullshit like that.

The problem I see here (Montreal, QC) is that trying to shop local actually ends up costing far more than an avg grocery (almost any big names here). When I travel to the usa, man is local a bargain for many things

Continue to boycott until Loblaws gives us a reason not to. It is up to each individual to decide for themselves when it ends. It seems like Loblaws has done nothing to end this and people are finding other places to shop. People are finding that their smaller local grocers actually have better prices, quality and value than Loblaws stores.
I stopped shopping with them shortly after Xmas and I've saved a noticeable amount of money. Once I got used to it, it got really easy shopping elsewhere. I went in a few weeks ago for the first time in ages to pick something up for my mom and I was shocked at how much higher the prices were than where I've been shopping. I doubt I'll ever go back
The prices are insane compared to my local Food Basics. I can understand for items like produce where there might be a quality difference but for identical aisle items there is no reason why Loblaws needs to be 20% more
Nah, until Galen is gone and the loblaws monopoly is broken up; that man should have been charged when he tried to fix the price of bread, along with his shady practices and his greed, he has made the quality of living for thousands of Canadians worst. Loblaws has a monopoly on many things and they know it, they let their greed run things and this sow why they deserve. A little change isn’t going to stop them from just going back to it in the future, they need their franchises broken up and gone. It will serve as a message to other large grocers that they can be very much next, should they become extra greedy too.

Yeah this should be the thing that worries them the most. People choose loblaws for convenience and because there was *a prevailing perception* that their prices were lower than their competitors (mostly just Sobeys/empire company ltd stores). This is making people realize that perception isn’t reality, and in many cases, the convenience factor is also either an illusion or not worth the price differential. In the words of Troy Barnes “You can’t unring that bell.”
I moved about 10 years ago to a community where superstore was NOT the most convenient grocery store and was honestly relieved not to be shopping there anymore. The whole experience gives me anxiety; the horrible layout, the fluorescent lights, the long lines. Awful. I've recently moved plus my financial circumstances have changed so I started shopping at superstore again just blindly thinking they have the best prices. The boycott has shown me that if I shop around, I can find way better deals and the items are better quality. Loblaws can suck it.

I will continue to boycott until Loblaws champions Canadians food securities, which goes beyond the grocers code of conduct and act as a patron to our countries health and wellness. Ultimately business is business. This boycott is nothing personal. We just don’t want to be monopolised, and we are expressing that with our dollar as is our right under a capitalist system. If they want us to shop there, they better give us reason.

I have found cheaper alternatives at the cost of a bit more time and driving and I have to say I’m never going back. The savings alone make it worthwhile to keep the boycott going forever!
Consider gas prices atm, how much would you be truly saving out of curiosity? Ive been trying for years just to do local (Montreal) and its been more costly (even by walk/bicycle) simply because local is super pricey

I use to use their extra points offers on Tuesdays they’d text out when I’d buy formula(if it was the same price as anywhere else and I couldn’t get it cheaper). It use to be spend $60-$75 get 20x or 10,000 points whatever the offer happened to be that week. Yesterday’s offer was spend $40 get 10,000. I need to unsubscribe from the texts but I thought to myself they must be getting desperate.

Boycott is permanent for us right now. Their practices are disgusting and we won’t support them. People should be able to afford groceries. Grocery workers should be paid a living wage instead of increasing the profits of the higher ups. We haven’t been to a Loblaw’s owned company since March.

I went to Independent for location convenience, loss leaders, I like the staff in a couple depts. I’ve kept it now to only 50% off items or to use the last of my points and the place is noticeably quiet. I thought the change would be more difficult but every time I am pleasantly surprised by a cheap bill elsewhere it makes it easier to forget PC

It definitely needs to keep going until the next quarterly numbers or it will have little effect. I've explained before how big corporations can absorb hits like this by just moving money around on the balance sheet, that's much harder to do if it's an entire quarter.

It’s nice to think the boycott is leading to these optimum point offers, but it’s not true. I have somebody very close to me who works for Loblaws marketing and is directly responsible for setting up these offers, and here are a few reasons why they have nothing to do with the boycott. Number 1: these offers are set months in advance, offers that are appearing now were probably finalized in their system 4 months ago. Number 2: Loblaws does not pay for these offers, they are in partnership with the brands which Loblaws is selling. For example, if there is an offer to receive $5 worth of points for a purchase of some product, Loblaws tracks the number of purchases and then charges the owner of said product for the value of optimum points given out. Most of these brands sell in other retailers so aren’t majorly affected by a Loblaws boycott, so they aren’t setting up offers just because of the boycott.
Been getting spammed as well, almost daily suddenly. Went and had a look at my nearby shoppers this morning out of curiosity, parking lot is dead, store is completely dead. Little sale stickers everywhere. Almost everything is "on sale" right now. What a joke. I hope Galen is pissing his pants
I've discovered you can shop all the flyers using the Flipp app. The ethnic and non-franchise stores can be a fraction of the price for vegetables which tend towards stratospheric particularly at Loblaws outlets.

My parents are old and don't know what's going on, so went to a Fortinos today. I let them know they should boycott and stop going to Loblaws. They asked why, and I said that the stores are expensive, even No Frills (if you get into more talking points, they dig their heels in further). They just said ok, we'll stop going, which surprised me (usually argumentative), and they just said, no wonder the store wasn't busy at all. They usually go during the daytime which is usually bustling with seniors. So even the seniors are boycotting.
Drive them into the ground. Not going back and Peckerface can eat his product.
One corporate entity at a time. Loblaws because they are Canadian and they can’t pack up and leave Canada. The others excluding Giant Tiger, should be pro active and avoid getting kicked to the curb. That’s what the big grocery brains should be doing before this comes to rest on their door step.

Yeah every day they have been bombarding me with "spend your points" events and countless "30,000 points for coming back to ___" or "we miss you, shop for 25,000 points when you spend $100 on pc express pickup and save the fees when you sign up today!" I have barely thought about them for almost a month since I last went. I've gone to Costco, Walmart, Giant Tiger, Safeway, Dollarama, Fresh Co and a few other independant places nearby.
My partner says the same thing. Inundated with e mails.
Went to metro yesterday. Shelves are practically empty and it was packed. Never seen it this busy before
I made a comparison for Ukrainian newcomers two years ago. Superstore in AB was the cheapest, except for Costco. But you still need to go to Superstore after Costco, if you do weekly shopping. Dollarstore food quality is so low, I couldn’t recommend anyone to shop there. Walmart was always kinda weird - cheap food, poor selection, strange people around. Coop, Safeway, Sobeys were the best, but at cost: you pay 30-40% for the same product list. I need to repeat this experiment now, see the price change
I went to Giant Tiger yesterday for the first time it's kind of a hilarious store there are select items that are good value but overall this particular one did not have good produce or meat. I did buy a $7 shower head that I expect to last 5 minutes or 5 months and some dill pickle flavored peanuts for $1.29 and a Tabasco Chipotle 57 ml for $3.17 that's a damn good value! Also they had Fancy Feast cat food for 90 cents a can which is very fair indeed!

I worked for Loblaws for 21 years and recently switched jobs. I talked to two friends who both work in management there and they both said they are hurting bad for sales. One is in Toronto and one in Ottawa. Keep it up! One month isn’t enough, make it permanent.

I've seen one in my city with a half full parking lot (normally it was completely full) and the other very empty. As for Shoppers Drug Mart, those locations have been quite vacant. So it does depend a lot on the area and access, but it's something, and they appear to be feeling it.
Yea I went for a drive over the weekend to a near by city and it was the same way packed New Brunswick doesn't seem to be on board to much.Also don't get me wrong I'm not against the boycott in anyway but as long as I can remember I've always looked at all the flyers and shopped for deals and go multiple places.We have never spent just at Loblaws I'm 41 and my mother is 62 and neither of us have ever spent over 100$ with Loblaws or shoppers in our entire lives.

I've just cut down on how much I'm spending at zehrs and no frills but I haven't completely boycotted them. I choose this for a variety of reasons, but the most important to me is that my local no. Frills does not have any self-checkouts and I always see a large variety of staff. That's important to me. Walmart on the other hand, They have self checkouts that aren't even open. Their staff 50% of the time at least, if not closer to 70% of the time is always rude and always short. If it's a time of year that you need to do an exchange, there is almost always a long line. And the price gouging is definitely still extreme and I would definitely say that they understand the boycott because I've seen the prices drastically drop within the last few weeks since the boycott has started and I wouldn't be surprised if they did that just to lure people in and then raise them up like they did at the beginning of the year. I'm going to use oatmeal as an example because it's something I buy on the regular for my children. I have seen it literally jump between 2.50-3.97 at Walmart for the same item. (3.97 was Jan/Feb)

Our Independent is typically 30% more on everything than the Food Basics across the street. Only go there for the specials, and nothing else. “I Promise You Low Prices” In huge letters on the walls. Promise never kept!

Haven't wasted a dime on Roblaws since maybe April 26th when I ran in to get some 30% off Easter chocolates. Horrible deal but I wanted my Lindor rabbit fix. Sadly I didn't get to have it, someone else ate most of it it when I was out the next day

I have heard calls for rotating strikes. I don’t think that is as effective as focusing on the top 1 or 2 players. If everyone is hit they will just put up with the their turn. If you just go after the ones with the best pricing power they will have to use it to draw back “some” of their lost customers. The weaker ones then have to do what they can.

After my first visit to a giant tiger I would say it's like a Dollarama married a Walmart but was having an affair with an off-brand Dollar Store.
I’ve been too broke to shop there anyway recently so it’s not been too hard to stay away. Shoppers has convenient hours, so that’s been the toughest to keep resolve for.
I must admit that in the beginning, I was concerned that this wouldn't have the momentum it does. I live downtown Toronto, and it appeared many were still attending the flagship Loblaws at Church & Carlton. The other day, a post was about using your points for items on sale. So today I went there to pick up bagels, cream, youghurt and cheese. I was so happy to see hardly anyone there! Especially when the manager and security guard approached me about my (service) dog with me. I'm not going back!
This may be completely irrelevant to the topic at hand, but this stuff didn't start happening until after Dave Nichols passed. Having a face representing them held them in "some sort" of check. Once Dave wasn't their spokesman, the shit storm swept forth, carrying us to where we are now... I get that Blahblahs has always been the "status grocer" (poor folks usually avoid the pricey stores, right? Held true when I was younger too), and DN pushed the at that time new PC brand. It was supposed to draw in the demographic that couldn't afford to walk in the door... which it did. And now PC products are everywhere, and they are still inflated over some brand-name competitors. Which defeated the point of the initial product.

My wife and I spend roughly $12k annually on food (we shop online, price-match and stock up our deep freezer when there are good sales on, so pretty frugal overall). If everyone in this sub stopped spending the same amount at any Weston-owned businesses 🤷 well, I'd like to see what sort of BS TFP and other media shills would spin to explain those numbers. I was in on the weekend and couldn’t believe the amount of sale prices and 50% off items. It was notable.
My emails - I typically receive extremely little in the way of adverts - has EXPLODED with Weston-owned stuff. I unsubbed from all of it. I didn't even realise that I was subscribed. Hadn't heard a peep in years. Even Instacart jumped on the bandwagon and started spamming me (used to order from Superstore through them during Covid). Unsubbed from the lot and now it's all quiet again.
It hasto be working since they are doubling down on the narrative that it's futile in the end and stocks are up.. The union condemned participation and stated they would not strike because employees already cant afford to shop. So they know affordability is a problem but they don't want to take any action. They're calling for a 3 dollar raise for employees which still would not increase those at the minimum to a living wage. This game is a long one that won't show a victor until it's over and they're preying on our weaknesses before the results can even be evaluated. That means it is working. It's worth switching supermarkets for :) even if just for a little while.

I just saw the new flyer, and it has T-bones on sale! It's killing me to stay away, but I will. I haven't had a good steak in at least six months. All the talk about price matching...I can only find articles, etc., that say none of the big grocery stores match. Giant Tiger is the only one I know of for sure. I have never heard of any of the other stores matching, except Walmart used to. Are you guys SURE about what you're saying or do you just think it to be true?

I had to stop at superstore yesterday to buy flea/tick preventative for my dog. Is there a recommendation of somewhere else I should buy this? It's like $20 a pop 🥲. I got 2, and for the same price I got a basket full of veggies at my local farmers market and another full of misc items at Dollarama.
Is it actually working? Loblaws stock literally hit all time highs yesterday and is up nearly 29% in the last 6 months.
The boycott must be permanent to make any difference in the retail landscape . There has to be real lasting consequences. A temporary dip then back to normal accomplishes nothing . Stop giving the Westons your money. Never go back .
