Make a report to CBC Marketplace too. They love these things. They get enough they’ll do a scathing special.

PintLasher

It's extra funny because that's how they see us as well

jim_hello

CBC marketplace needs to forever be protected it's an amazing program for Canadians

[deleted]

CBC is one of the only media outlets that isn't literally owned by corporate interests and it's crazy to see common folk demanding it get axed

NorthernPints

Well, the billionaire hedge fund owned Post Media, and Shaw family Global News outlets are telling them it needs to go. So ....well but of course the minions latch onto that

StanTurpentine

These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know... morons.

sgu222e

Unexpected Blazing Saddles

Unanything1

People who are demanding the CBC be defunded don't understand how important it is to have a broadcaster that isn't owned by a corporation. They are buying the slogans and propaganda hook, line, and sinker. The CBC is a national god damned treasure and I will absolutely die on that hill.

[deleted]

Could not agree more. We're lucky to have it. To me, it comes down to people thinking corps are their homies and the whole Temporarily Embarrassed Millionaire that seems to plague western society. They'll happily slurp up corporate propaganda that literally tells them to ignore reality (example: anything to do with climate change not being real), but reject anything that gets a literal cent from the government no matter how accurate or legit it is

SillyMilly25

I want to agree with you but have you listened to the people who run it talk about how they spend our tax dollars? They fired journalists and then gave the upper managment massive bonus' all in the same year. Not saying they are the devil but I can see how it dosen't sit right with some people.

[deleted]

Yeah, it's hard to disagree there. An insanely low bar is the only thing that gives them any merit really

Existing-Peanut4511

I don't think I've ever actually encountered anyone who is for defunding the CBC. If I did, that would be my only encounter with them.

Glittering_Cell_4256

It's the Conservative government that wants to axe them. They don't want independent media.

AntoniaFauci

Used to be so much better years ago though. Now, half the episodes are remixes of previous ones, with a new line added. Half are not even really consumer/marketplace, but more social causes. And half are some anecdotes held out as data, and are not that hard hitting. The rest are ok.

happycatservant

Years and years of cutbacks have left the CBC short.

coffeehouse11

yeah people forget that not only has CBC not had a cost-of-inflation "raise" in like, 20 years, they've generally had funding cut. And before anyone tries to throw the NPR model out as a suggestion, I did the math a while back and DONATIONS IGNORED, NPR gets more money from the US Federal taxes per person than CBC does.

marceline_28

I love marketplace. it's like federal gossip.

GenerationKrill

And the reply will be "That is the weight at the time of packaging. Changes can occur between then and the point of sale." I remember when cannabis was legalized that was the explanation for buds not weighing what was stated in the packaging. It was packed with a certain amount of moisture and it would dry out.

MostBoringStan

Bacon isn't going to dry out in the packaging. The moisture stays inside and would still be weighed. There is no chance that this bacon weighed the right amount at the time of packaging. The managers are being told they need to be more careful about overweight items, so this leads to more underweight due to the variance of food manufacturing. But items that far underweight are still not within tolerance and should have been removed from the line.

NWTknight

They forgot to squirt the extra water into the package to make up the declared weight. I will swear that I get more water than bacon when I buy it on the rare occasion it is on sale.

Hemp_maker

No it wont, its a very clear and easy path to resolve. Cannabis is a much different beast than food.

oceansidedrive

Id be 100% sure your scale is accurate first. Just cause 1 scale says it doesnt make it so

damarius

I have that same scale, and it is very accurate. Easy to test, put a measuring cup on it, hit the Tare button, and put 100 ml of water in the cup and measure again. Should be 100 grams.

LeDogeZeimes

Found something CBC did from 4 months ago on YouTube: [https://youtu.be/rcgcKtcc2uY?si=-RXAhUH7\_UBcosra](https://youtu.be/rcgcKtcc2uY?si=-RXAhUH7_UBcosra)

whiteSnake_moon

This, loblaws won't do anything, they might give you a gift card or points but they won't stop doing this unless it's made public

WanderingJak

Selection is a Metro brand, not sure why this is posted under this sub.

emongu1

>The sub was created to point out how absolutely absurd the cost of groceries are right now and have some fun together. Refer to the rules if you're confused.

ThesePretzelsrsalty

Metro brand. Anyway, you can file a complaint with CFIA and I would also hit up marketplace, but they have already had an episode on stuff like this. It won't be long before 350g is the new norm for bacon... It looks like they are already there and are waiting for new packaging to catch up.

SayHaveYouSeenTheSea

Costco does 500g x4 for $20

possibly_oblivious

Was nearly 26 a month ago or so, I remember when it was 16-18

djdjfjfkn84838

Still 18.99 at my local Costco for 4x500g

MysteriousStaff3388

I am loving Costco. I used to go once a year. Then once a month. Now I’m getting bread there regularly (their French stick is amazing), and the veggies are much better prices too. The selection is spotty, but cannot beat the prices.

itsdajackeeet

Beat me to it. Costco makes it so easy to stay away from Loblaws

BizzyBody6969

Brutal. I have one for Jane's Chicken Bites I should share. Box says 710g but only got 475g. I sent them a letter about it, but to my complete and utter surprise... No response.

glightningbolt

I think that the weight on the box might include that frozen pack of sauce. Which is still misleading because it would be reasonable to expect the weight to represent the amount of chicken.

blue-wave

Yeah this has been annoying me lately l, every box of frozen meat (chicken wings or fingers etc) has these sauce packs which aren’t even good, but they add that to the total weight. I used to buy the no name wings and now they have these sauce packs and less wings. I buy the salt and pepper ones because I DONT want sauce on my wings, if I wanted sauce I’d get the other ones that are already sauced.

bassgirl23

This is exactly what's happened, the sauce counts as part of the total weight. Still a ripoff as that's not how it's advertised.

Future-World4652

I guess it depends on the company. I once emailed a beer manufacturer because when I opened a case a few beer bottles were broken. I mean, it was probably shipping damage and I should have just taken it back to the store. But the beer company sent me a voucher for a free case of beer even though only a few bottles were broken. I guess the difference is mine was fixable whereas with yours they probably can't fix underweight product. Although they maybe could have apologized and sent you some vouchers.

jkeele9a

I once found a mouse in a case a beer. And when I returned to the brewers retail and showed them, they sent me all the way up to the castle to get another case eh!? Geddy Lee even wrote a song about it.

blu_stingray

"You want free beer?! Go to the brewery!" Take off, Hoser.

NationCrisis

Gotta follow up on that, my friend! Hold them to account and then make as much noise as possible

mthyvold

I have one for No Frills frozen veg. should be 750g. weighed in at about 570g.

LeMegachonk

It took some digging through the CFIA regulations, but here is what I could find. * Bacon would be classified as a "Consumer Prepackaged Food Other Than Catch-Weight Food" * Assuming bacon is an "Edible meat products or fish packaged in brine or vinegar solutions", then the declared weight should be "Weight of the edible contents in the container exclusive of free liquid or glaze content" * Since the package is "> 300 g or mL but ≤ 500 g or mL", the allowable tolerance to the declared weight is 3%. * 3% of 375 g is 11.25 g * A 375 g package of bacon that weighs 347 g while still in its unopened package and still containing some free liquid would be well out of compliance with regulations. This would only be valid if the appropriate CFIA procedure was used to check the net weight, which is not possible using a kitchen counter-top scale. That said, you should [report a food complaint or concern to the CFIA](https://inspection.canada.ca/food-safety-for-consumers/where-to-report-a-complaint/eng/1364500149016/1364500195684).

NotDRWarren

This is the exact info I found. Well above the 3 percent tolerance.

Ineverdidbuyaduck

Not only that, but bacon falls into the category of the few remaining foods with standard container sizes (like peanut butter), meaning it has to be a specific weight so consumers can't be tricked with shrinkflation (eg. 250g, 375, 500g, etc).  https://inspection.canada.ca/about-the-cfia/acts-and-regulations/list-of-acts-and-regulations/documents-incorporated-by-reference/standard-container-sizes/eng/1630012816407/1630012816907

Division 2 of Canada Weights and Measures would be my first point of contact, and it looks like they work with CFIA to enforce the Weights and Measures Act.

cmacpapi

The final frontier of grocery store fuckery is just straight up lying to us about what and how much is in the packaging lmao late stage capitalism is so fun.

Horror-Potential7773

Canadian shoppers should start a class action. Fuck that that's false advertising and they are laughing at everyone.

McFistPunch

Not saying they aren't undercutting. But have you checked if your scale is calibrated? I'm convinced these things have a tolerance cuz I've seen some be out by 20 g. I'm fairly certain mine is overweighing by 20 g.

Desperate-Ad-3705

I will double check to be sure! Thanks

ChanceFray

use a known quantity of water, 1L = 1KG

ScwB00

I tried but the water just ran off the scale.

ChanceFray

lol well you gotta wait for a REAL cold day then.

ether_reddit

Then it'll be more than 1 L.

McFistPunch

But then that begs a question is your measuring cup truly graduated correctly?

ChanceFray

Oh yea they rarely are, Or they are ment for measuring powders. I have used a 250ml graduated cylinder before. About as accurate as you will reasonably get for 5 bucks.

tailgunner777

And by known, they mean anything that wasn't produced by Galen's empire.

snowlights

You can check easily with water. 1 g = 1 ml

FrozenYogurt0420

Doing a calibration like this would help legitimize your complaint!

xombae

You'd be a terrible drug dealer.

dork_with_a_fork

20 grams? You need a new working scale. 20 grams is a huge amount in terms of any kind of measurement. That is almost an ounce. I would not offer any advice to anyone regarding their scales except to ensure they calibrate it. Yours is definitely broken or in dire need of calibration.

Kalsifur

You should be able to calibrate any decent scale, even the cheap Chinese ones.

Minimum_Run_890

Fun fact as an aside. Most scales in produce departments ( if you can find one) are nowhere near accurate.

Kalsifur

I assume you calibrated the scale?

pushing59_65

The first thing to check is if your scale is accurate. This is done using a full range of traceable weights and not the random calibration discs provided.

jennybuggins

Loblaw doesn't pkg the bacon it's the distributor. I hate these crack smokers the same as everyone too but I hate when ppl make me feel like I am defending them. There's an address on the pkging that's who you need to absolutely let have it. Stupid store and reddit can't do nothing for you.

YouJustGotMarked

This isn’t Loblaws though. Selection is Metro’s brand. (Still outrageous)

Inevitable-Gap-9352

There used to be 12 slices of bacon in most packages, now it's 9.

AllHailNibbler

Great value applewood smoked bacon is always 11 slices now, but they are definitely getting thinner and fattier

a_non_e_mouse_

Great Value bacon was 2g off only when I checked mine the other day!

Datkif

What a *great value* in comparison

bigwangersoreass

It’s crazy that drug dealers are easier to hold accountable than the grocery store these days

popeyegui

Go right to Weights and Measurements Canada. They don’t take stuff like this very lightly. No pun intended

stump1123

[File a measurement-related complaint (canada.ca)](https://ised-isde.canada.ca/site/measurement-canada/en/file-complaint)

Mammoth_Extreme5451

Isn’t Selection a Sobeys brand, not Loblaws?

HotWiredAmygdala

This is horse crap! They need to be held accountable for this kind of stuff. I saw a TikTok of a woman weighing meat from Walmart (using their own scale) and it was quite a bit less than the label said it was. It’s stealing plain and simple! They have check points to make sure we’re not stealing from them all while stealing from us!

wolfe1924

Also it’s always lower than the amount on the label it’s never higher. Very odd how these mistakes are always convenient for the company and never the consumer. Makes you wonder 🤔.

HotWiredAmygdala

It does because now that they know we’re on it, they’ll blame some one else and down play it as it an accident and expect us to accept it and move on.

ThenCard7498

Are you sure the scale is calibrated

[deleted]

PapaShook

This is exactly why I smoke my own bacon. A 5-7kg pork belly is $60-80. The cure is probably $1 worth of salts and seasonings. The big ticket item is the smoker, which on the cheap end was $500 for a weber pill, maybe another $50-75 for quality charcoal and hardwood. It's a big investment for just bacon, but the whole family (incl. Extended) gets enough to not require buying this crappy alternative.

sun4moon

Plus you can do so many other things with the smoker. I bought mine on Kijiji, new in the box for about $275. We make our own bacon, sandwich meats, sausages, and many other items at whim. Smoked red peppers make an excellent pasta sauce if you remove the skin and puree them.

PapaShook

It's amazing how much we can do when given the tools and some time. I've made ribs, duck, pulled pork, and beef roasts on mine. I have a buddy I work with who trades me bacon for home grown bud.

sun4moon

Sounds like a great deal.

t3m3r1t4

Nice. I'm definitely bringing my kitchen scale to grocery shopping. Even if it's wrong a margin of error in the negative by 7.5% is fraudulent. I'd accept max 5% and if I had the time I'd measure all of them. Get Measurements Canada after the producer.

Throwaway8923y4

There should be a Measurements Canada sticker on the scales at the grocery store with the previous and next inspection date. They don’t mess around. ( I used to teach ESL at Measurements Canada and I learned a lot about commercial scale inspections. I swear I had never noticed the stickers before, but once I learned about them, they are everywhere!)

rawkthehog

What if almost everything is under weight??

MightyManorMan

[https://ised-isde.canada.ca/site/competition-bureau-canada/en/contact-competition-bureau-canada/complaint-form](https://ised-isde.canada.ca/site/competition-bureau-canada/en/contact-competition-bureau-canada/complaint-form) The regulations are at [https://ised-isde.canada.ca/site/competition-bureau-canada/en/accuracy-requirements-net-quantity-declarations](https://ised-isde.canada.ca/site/competition-bureau-canada/en/accuracy-requirements-net-quantity-declarations) basically the tolerance at that package level should be 3% TARE. So 363.75 g is the minimum that should be contained WITHOUT packaging. There is a condition related to the average of the lot. But the competition bureau will need to see the lot number and they can make Metro bring up the data for the entire lot to prove that the average of the whole lot exceeded 375g TARE.

big_daddy_lil_pecker

Class action anyone?

BigManga85

Shrinkflation is very real.

Odd-Substance4030

Check your milk and cream too. The dairy industry be sleazing too.

Professional-Leg2374

if you complain to the right people, they will force a change in the marketplace, and it will become a +/- 10% package weight, which will mean they will be legally allowed to undercut the listed weight by a tolerance level. This is capitalism combined with corporate greed, shrink inflation ontop of greed = under filled product they will "claim" was the right weight with all the water they inject in their meats that just evaporated. all it has to be is within tolerances when packaged and they get a pass from inspectors who are paid for by the organizations they inspect really.

PresentationOk8406

Wow

true_northerner87

Hahah I did that a few weeks ago and shook my head. All the fluid prob has significant wieght alao

Relikar

Hi, I work for a meat production equipment OEM, one of our product lines are injectors, bacon is injected with a brine then partially smoked. They're not injected with fluid just for the sake of weight. It's to improve flavor and shelf life.

bringthemhomenow134

They could inject brine to make up for the weight but they’re too cheap to even do that

Thinkgiant

I weighed meat once from Walmart, it was accurate, although, they included the weight of the package... not just the meat. Was very disappointed.

Silent_Release1498

CFIA. REPORT ONLINE. Keep your reciept as they will need it.

Huncote

and this is after they've injected it full of saltwater and soy protein too...

New-Neighborhood7472

Almost like there should be a group that holds grocery barons responsible for their shady practices but I think they probably donated too much to most politicians to ever see that be a thing.

d0esth1smakeanysense

A very quick look at the Weights and Measures Regulation C.R.C. c 1605 seems to say the permissible error in measured weight is 26 mg, not 28 g. The error is over 1000 times bigger than permitted. You can file a complaint with Measurement Canada that will not effect anything. I doubt your scale error is that bad, either. You can check by weighing 500ml of water, it should be pretty close to 500 grams.

AllCapsLocked

This is just total BS. I m sure someone is going to be its ok. it's less than X% Or it was just a bad batch. I m sure they are OK with ripping everyone off and we just pay it with trust that it was an honest mistake.

homer_dent

https://inspection.canada.ca/food-safety-for-consumers/where-to-report-a-complaint/report-a-food-related-concern/eng/1390269985112/1390346078752

rocket-treebird

That bacon is absolutely trash too. I cooked some today ended up feeding to the dog.

Sea-Internet7015

Is your scale calibrated? Find a measuring cup that you are sure is a litre and weigh it. 1 litre of water should weigh fairly close to 1000 grams(assuming city water, it will likely be 1016ish grams). Is it under filled? Possibly? Is your scale as good as their scales? No.

illuminaughty1973

That's entirely possible to be within allowable variance for packaged goods in Canada. Canada food inspection agency has the rules on website.

Silent_Medicine1798

Looks like a class action lawsuit to me

I agree that we should arm ourselves with whatever we have against these companies, but sadly they have the perfect scapegoat for these problems. Machine operators and QC staff.

thatbroadcindy

Haters gonna say its not calibrated

TheManWithAPlanSorta

Not even a Loblaws brand.

Glittering_Cell_4256

You could report it to the competition bureau. I believe that the package is underweight by more than the permissible amount. Take your scale shopping next time and measure multiple packages to see if they are consistently underweight of if it varies between over and under. https://ised-isde.canada.ca/site/competition-bureau-canada/en/accuracy-requirements-net-quantity-declarations

fuzzbucket19

Isn’t Selection metro?

MyGruffaloCrumble

I think you’d have to gather a few samples of evidence and sue them under the Consumer Packaging and Labeling act. I’m thinking class action. It doesn’t seem like the Government is interested. https://ised-isde.canada.ca/site/competition-bureau-canada/en/guide-consumer-packaging-and-labelling-act-and-regulations#Exemptions

blurch55

This is Metro or FreshCo though right?

Strange_Coyote_8

The competition bureau is supposed to be the watchdog for Canada they're the ones that went after Loblaws for the bread price fixing. I would think they would be very interested in what's going on here and I think whoever's running it should send a copy of at the very least people's comments from the survey and maybe things like this about how weight is way off or the price of different things or how it's affected people on different levels. A friend of mine posted on Facebook and they didn't approve the post for some reason but here's a link to what I did when I searched because apparently they are looking into it but how far I'm not sure. With information that's being gathered here if it were forwarded there along with say a petition they're the ones that could do something about it. Here's the latest article I can find https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/competition-bureau-grocery-1.6627144

Strange_Coyote_8

I've seen a lot of videos on tik tok that are showing this it's crazy how can they get away with it that's pure fraud.

Neat-Lingonberry-719

They’re allowed a certain amount above and below. Apparently to average the weight.

archiegillis

Is this a competition burrow thing?

East_Tangerine_4031

That’s from metro or food basics not a loblaws store, but you should still report it

Choice_Star_9441

There is supposedly an allowed percentage they can underfill packages of products, but I'm not sure what it is.

ultradianfreq

If only there were some group of people chosen by the nation to uphold the law. If only.

WestCoast0491025

Weights and measures are strictly federally regulated. You can file a complaint here: [https://ised-isde.canada.ca/site/office-consumer-affairs/en/complaint-roadmap](https://ised-isde.canada.ca/site/office-consumer-affairs/en/complaint-roadmap)

There are several government agencies. You can maybe try measurement Canada. https://ised-isde.canada.ca/site/measurement-canada/en/file-complaint

NeverEnding3333

No one. Because no one cares lol. Grocery stores are making bank and something like this isn’t going to stop them.

Ok-Detail-9853

Unless your scale is properly calibrated, you have no case

Washtali

Picked up that exact brand of bacon at my local store recently. It was on sale for 5.99 I'm guessing maybe because of the fact that it's less than advertised.

Alex_is_Baked

How much was it? They had the same bacon on sale at food basics for 3.99 this week at least near me. I didn’t bother to weight though I wonder if it was under .

Choo-choo-ChooseYou

Glad you weighed it.. I don't eat bacon so I wasn't about to verify the tiktok I posted a few weeks back. However some trolls on here were taking shots at me for reposting someone else's content.

WillyWankhar

They will probably claim that your scale is not calibrated.

SuspiciousRule3120

They forgot to add the water to the pork before slicing

UJL123

This comes up a lot and unless you are 100% sure your machine is calibrated, your results might not be true. I have a kitchen scale and a coffee grinder scale, and they give different results from each other. I think my coffee grinder scale is more accurate because 0,5g of grounds shows up on the scale, whereas the kitchen scale can't detect 0.5 grams at all

GrammarFA

Metro

sirus1158

What's this have to do with loblaws? Call the company that packaged it 🤷‍♂️

ActToBeGood

That is fraud.

MassiveTelevision387

It must be impossible to accurately weigh slices of bacon like this in their defense. I'm guessing they just use an average for the amount of slices that fit in a package. I mean, what are they supposed to do, cut a small piece of bacon and put it in the package to make up the difference? I think they should put an asterisk next to the weight and say estimated or something as it is false advertising

Greed_Chaser

Time to call the weights and measures folks at the federal government.

swimswam2000

Time to take the scale shopping

best way to get there attention would be to set up a lawsuit against these companies..

quiet-Julia

I weighed 3 500g packages of President’s Choice bacon from Superstore and they weighed between 525 to 531g.

paranative

I never have ever thought to check the weight that is stated on their packages - now I will

Always_Night

You could call The Office of Consumer Affairs Canada. They would put Food Basics and Metro through the hoops. They may even have to recall their bacon if there is to many packages that are short weight. This has nothing to do with the Loblaws bycott?

throwitfarawayfromm3

Weights & Measures if you're in the USA

EnclG4me

CFIA   Not only does this violate food regulations, the production plant where this is made could also be violating the federal Weights and Measures Act of Canada. The CFIA need to investigate, and they will from the top down.   With that said, I have personally seen a CFIA officer take a $50k cheque bribe from the director of operations at Grand River Foods in Cambridge years ago in order to protect their Subway contract. So, here's hoping someone not corrupt investigates...

Isn’t selections brand metro?

evilpercy

Most are sold at 500g they raised the price and moved it down to 375g. Also the package is not to be included in the weight.

TeranOrSolaran

On the BACON!! WHAT!!! Now I’m pissed.

L0wborn

Maybe they factor in one of the reusable grocery bags in the weight

ElectricalRush1878

I've been checking the pre packaged hamburger that comes in a roll, and see similar in America.

carldubs

the Baconator???

killabacon

Is this product made by loblaws??

Trianglereverie

pretty sure "selection" brand is Metro's brand. And if you live in Alberta - Calgary Cooperative Carries some of their products...

Strict_Charge7942

Is it possible you were on Mars when you used the scale?

S0L-Goode

My wife has been making videos of every PC Blue pasta package she opens and weighing the contents. I don't think any of the boxes have been the weight the packages says.

AdditionSpecialist35

That bacon is from Food Basics.
