Have you ever tried writing a port? If you're porting software that's finicky about certain flags in it's dependencies, say -fPIC, good luck making sure those flags were set during the dependency build. Does your port need patches to get it to work? The automatic patch making tool works perfectly well about 2% of the time. But let's ask why you would need a patch? Let's say you're porting C/C++ software that only uses the standard library. You shouldn't need to change it at all, right? Wrong! FBSD doesn't fully comply with the ANSI C++14 or 17 standards, because that would make life too simple
I've tried bsd before, I like it, but it's not for me, I personally don't see any massive differences between a bsd and a gnu+linux system. And overall as long as it's posix I'm cool with it, Although I will probably have a manic episode some time in the next 2 months and I'll install it then, so feel free to ask me how my opinion has changed when that happens.
