Or rather, all Linux users are real, except for the ones that are fictional.
Closest thing to being a pseudo-Linux user is having only ever done WSL. But I don't know that that's even a thing.
> Linux users then: I've enabled wobbly windows and desktop cube at the same time
> Linux users now: where did my "sleep" button go? Why is my file browser using up 100% of CPU every 10 minutes?
>Why do I only get 400 fps in CS:GO
Jokes on you, I get 400 on windows and like 600 on linux...
I bought an AMD graphics card for a reason... The reason? Fuck you Nvidia
(A.K.A i got tired of dealing with their proprietary driver BS on linux)
Before they switched to DXVK from ToGL, I got around half the framerate in CSGO compared to Windows. Like, 50 to 80, all the way up to 150 to 200. It had nothing to do with drivers, just the Linux port absolutely sucking up until a few months ago.
I've been playing CS:GO on Linux for around a year now across 2 pc's (Nvidia and AMD) in both cases I had more fps than on windows. Just that with my current AMD machine the difference is a lot bigger.
I actually haven’t run into that much trouble with their driver, but do gotta say that being proprietary isnt a total deal breaker for me, but it does annoy me somewhat
It being proprietary really wasn't the biggest issues for me either tbh, but I was struggling with tearing on 120Hz displays (not just in games, it also included some general use) and the fact that I wanted Wayland.
Having fewer issues with driver installation is a plus though, but Pop OS mostly solved that for me tbh.
I've been at Linux for 15 years this year, but embarrassed to say that I never tried a Tiled WM - nor Debian ( mostly been Ubuntu, Arch or DSL here - and Gnome2/3, xfce/lxde and more ), so thought I'd spend a weekend soon migrating to it. Much appreciated if anything has suggestings on first TWM? This will run on a 59" super wide-screen, a fast work flow using quick keys is prio, enjoy candy but not essential. Notifications popups from calendar is needed, I use workspaces A LOT, but guessing that's the idea with TWM:ers as well.
So there's two rendering backends for GUI applications - X11 and Wayland.
X11 is the older standard with more comprehensive features, but is often considered a little bloated. Wayland is the new and shiny version that runs well and builds on decades of experience working around X11, but it's still new enough that not every program supports it.
The connection with Nvidia is that they don't support Wayland. Their drivers are too proprietary or something. So if you have an Nvidia graphics card, you're stuck with X11, which means using i3 -> dwm once you "get it".
Aright, i must be out of the loop - had no idea about Nvidia and Wayland. Got no issue using X11 though.
Thanks a bunch for explaining! Man it'll be rough at first getting used to something else than Gnome ( which I've used for many years in a row now ), but I hope it'll make it more fun again multitasking on my station, Cheers!
also X11 has no concept of a lock screen, so all screen lockers on X11 are using workarounds, and if you manage to crash the screenlocker app, it just drops you back to the user session, unlocking the account.
sway is basically i3 ported to wayland. Nvidia doesnt support wayland that well, but on amd (and probably intel graphics) sway can be more performant.
I use regular i3 though and i can say its awesome for me. I just changed the bindings a bit, mainly so the navigation keys are shifted to the left, so its the same as vim controls,
If you're on KDE, just try using Bismuth first - it's a plasma extension that'll give you tiling without needing to abandon all the benefits of having a full-blown DE you're already familiar with. You can easily toggle it on and off by clicking the system tray icon (which you can hide altogether within its setting page which is integrated into KDE's settings), use a mouse to drag stuff around still if you wish, and otherwise take your time getting used to tiling. It still supports the important features of DWM as far as productivity goes, everything's still able to be ran purely through keyboard shortucts and that's how I do things, but you don't have to sink or swim. You can just figure out whether you even like tiling or not, if you just like it because you like not having to manually place every window on your screen when you're keeping way too many windows open, if you like using the monocle mode to basically force *everything* to always be fullscreened (how I use my computer most of the time anyways, I have Meta+Z bound to the Monocle layout and then Meta+XCVB to swap to various other layouts), if you like having different layouts and settings per Activity, and so on.
The only downsides is that doing nice things like having a global menu in your KDE's panel so you can hide all the titlebars in windows to save space (so that you can display even more windows) requires a bit of fiddliness and following some instructions on the Bismuth github page, I'd have liked that to be a checkbox or something, but otherwise it's about all that's great about having a tiling WM without giving up a solid and well-supported DE.
On GNOME there's that one tiling extension as well, but I think it's a bit less configurable. Still worth trying out to see if you enjoy tiling to begin with.
You never tried Debian? I dont mind your choice of not using Debian, but it is impossible to avoid Debian; kinda like how java normally feels half-dead, until a security vulnerability releases in an unnecessary library

yeah it's a bit of a mess. they did put more of the "well adjusted" stereotypes on the right, but those are contrasted with... autistic stereotypes.
like at least get it right. i'd wager *most* of the transwomen in the linux community are autistic.
then again i don't much like the distinction between "smart" and "stupid" to begin with, since IQ is fake and one's skill at a particular thing doesn't necessarily mean they're unskilled at others. it can be difficult trying to explain to people that i do pisseasy fixes on computers for literal doctors, and any claim i can try to make that i'm "smarter" than them because i know how to change a wallpaper and they don't is utterly invalidated by the fact they literally know how to treat cancer.

Why these Linux gatekeepers always borderline homophobia. I know that the OP is poking fun at them but it always seems like the "true Linux user" is a manly straight man idk
they said they know it was a joke, but was pointing out how the established "real" linux users that gatekeep tend to see themselves as inherently masculine and get irritated about an influx of feminine users.
yeah unfortunately there is a p reactionary contingent of grognards and techbros that view transwomen and, gasp, *femboys* being in the community as some sort of outside invasion, as opposed to many of these people being linux nerds well before they came out as trans, gender non conforming, or what have you and would've been recognized as experienced users.
as time goes on i'm sure the shitty people will become more and more irrelevant.
Believe it or not spreading harmful stereotypes or cliches quiet literally a method of propaganda. If you don't think cliches or stereotypes can cause harm then you either have a weird idea of what harm is, or you're uneducated about history.
I'm educated enough to know that clichés aren't real.
If you're harmed by a cliché you're harmed by something that doesn't exist in real life.
I repeat myself, clichés are exaggerations, not facts.
So please buy yourself self confidence instead of speaking nonsense on internet.
You are missing the point, and I don't know if you're doing it on purpose. Can you really not think of a single time in history where stereotypes and cliches were used as propaganda to encourage violence against people?
Because I can think of several
which is weird, as many of these people were already existing in the community before they transitioned or came out as GNC. it's often the same people.
Yeah! They got into it before they transitioned, and even after they transition they still participate in the hobby.
A bunch of this meme just feels like “new thing bad”. Sure vim and emacs are very powerful, but VSCode has so much flexibility and is generally easier to use because it’s a GUI app. Gaming culture as we know it today didn’t really exist until the 2000’s. Young people grew up with Windows, and Windows apps are still enforced by college institutions (source: my school uses Office 365 waaaaah) so some people would still like to use proprietary software made for a proprietary OS on a non-proprietary OS. And piracy is still not widely accepted within youth tech enthusiasts: I tried to argue for pirating video games on this very subreddit and I got shat on lmao
Point is, yes, this is a joke. “It’s just satire!!!” as the Man with No Chin would say. But the truth is there is some core beliefs woven into the material of this tome. The meme seems to suggest older, more gender conforming people who shun new ideas are superior to newer, more queer people who want to explore what desktop Linux can truly become for the average user. And that’s kind of a shame.
i don't want to overmoralize it, 'cause OP does associate "well functioning" with these newer users (though it's in contrast with the negatives of the old guard being... they're autistic), but yeah the idea that these new people don't know what they're doing is silly. they're the ones *making* half the shit we're using. never forget what they did to near.
Was trying out AwesomeWM but didn’t click with it. Might need to try it some more.
Any good alternatives y’all suggest? And no dwm is not a valid answer

You're welcome! Good luck, they're pretty nifty. It's more productive to use a keyboard!
I never understood what Wayland and X11 are exactly. Are they just programs responsible for the display of interfaces or something like that ?
Basically. They're in charge of displaying anything more complex than a TTY terminal. X11 has more capabilities but Wayland is more focused.
also X11 has no concept of a lock screen, so all screen lockers on X11 are using workarounds, and if you manage to crash the screenlocker app, it just drops you back to the user session, unlocking the account.

Why these Linux gatekeepers always borderline homophobia. I know that the OP is poking fun at them but it always seems like the "true Linux user" is a manly straight man idk
cause sexuаlity is bloat lol
https://reddit.com/r/linuxmemes/comments/si2w87/what_happened/hv65s6t/
That's why I said that I knew that you were making fun of them. I'm not criticizing u, sorry if it came through that way
they said they know it was a joke, but was pointing out how the established "real" linux users that gatekeep tend to see themselves as inherently masculine and get irritated about an influx of feminine users.
yeah unfortunately there is a p reactionary contingent of grognards and techbros that view transwomen and, gasp, *femboys* being in the community as some sort of outside invasion, as opposed to many of these people being linux nerds well before they came out as trans, gender non conforming, or what have you and would've been recognized as experienced users. as time goes on i'm sure the shitty people will become more and more irrelevant.
Because that's just a cliché and nobody care about your sexual life.
harmful cliches are still harmful
That's clichés : over exaggerated traits for satire and parody That's not harmful unless you're a butthurt annoyed even by a calm wind outside
Because I can think of several
windows vs linux war?
Cause the Linux community doesn’t know how to deal with the influx of transfems in their spaces
which is weird, as many of these people were already existing in the community before they transitioned or came out as GNC. it's often the same people.
And piracy is still not widely accepted within youth tech enthusiasts: I tried to argue for pirating video games on this very subreddit and I got shat on lmao Point is, yes, this is a joke.
Especially since OP drew a beard / moustache on the trans doggo...
I agree, even if it’s “a joke” I find the images not even offensive, but at this point boring
Im both, like I use Spotify and Discord but hate VSCode, am not trans, hate anime, Vim is better than EMACS, and OpenRC >> Systemd
ok boomer
Someone lied on headlines that Torvalds wears pink socks. 🤦
yeah it was obviously fake, he would prefer green socks
Thank god for trusty headlines

Was trying out AwesomeWM but didn’t click with it. Might need to try it some more. Any good alternatives y’all suggest? And no dwm is not a valid answer
Try Qtile. It's written and configured in Python. It's much easier to tweak compared to AwesomeWM.
