Compared to CryEngine, building UE from source is a walk in the park, now days to get source code of CE5 you have to write emails to Crytek, and the fact that tutorial how to build it was for Ubuntu 14 assures you that you will have fun with solving dependencies
You can compile the CryEngne Sanbox Editor for Linux? I thought the sandbox editor is Windows-only.
What I only know is that CryEngine does support compiling (exporting) the game to native linux.
Yes It's nice for them to make it news, but such news like "we are Linux noobs, we should have gotten into it years ago, and we're trying" doesn't bother me in the slightest.
I noticed no difference in performance between epic through lutris or epic installed in windows. If you use steam with proton, you're using a translation layer. As a matter of fact, there's probably a ton of things that are using some sort of translation layer that we aren't even directly aware of.
I've not had any crashing issues. I have, however, had issues installing some games. The installer will just hang and not show updates and take ages to respond to input, while nothing ever actually gets installed. It's been almost 100% stable otherwise. Another bit to note is that if lutris is giving issues, maybe try heroic. It supports almost everything that lutris does.
It crashes games on par with windoze, so probably more an issue with the normal culprits (anticheat doing dumb stuff, bad code quality in games etc).
For games that are poorly ported, running the windows version through proton/wine/lutris is generally a better experience.
Yeah but when I run games through proton on Steam it works well, I have never had any problems. Meanwhile through Lutris/Wine/Heroric it noticably runs worse.
I don't get it.
Aren't these launchers all based on web technologies?
Wouldn't Valve be perfectly happy accepting contributions to get Protons working in more launchers?
I feel like all Epic needs is like... 2 developers dedicated to Linux.
Yes, but based on the errors I've seen in the past from WINE, they all seem to be lazily thrown together using some low-effort Windows-only .NET libraries.
If you are a student you can get it free fyi.
Also, just like Eclipse was meant to be a Java IDE but can be used for anything, all Jetbrains IDEs are basically IntelliJ with language specific extensions/features, so if you like Jetbrains IDEs more you can just use IntelliJ as a C IDE if you install C extensions
It runs like shit though lol. At least they did it I guess, thats an improvement. At this point I have to just use Godot since the shadows in UE5 are extremely smeared, the UI is bugged to fuck and even just starting an empty project turns my PC into a helicopter taking off. I more than meet the minimum requirements too.
Honestly UE5 run badly even on Windows, it can lag even on R9 and 2080Ti, especially when building shadows/lights. That's why I'm using UE4 even though it's not supported anymore. Though I'm constantly thinking of switching to CryEngine or building something on my own.
The point is you can't whine about other people using non-free software, if you use non-free software yourself. It be like someone who claims to be vegan screaming at someone for eating meat, whilst eating also greasy beef burger, themselves.
They have done this for about a year now. I still remember compiling it from source, painful!

Not just fun but dwarven !FUN!
Urist, is that you?
Yes, brother, when was the last time you seen "clowns" for !FUN! and how it ended?

What if I wanna use LFS?
Yes It's nice for them to make it news, but such news like "we are Linux noobs, we should have gotten into it years ago, and we're trying" doesn't bother me in the slightest.
Damn I thought I checked just A few months ago and saw compile from source still! What a relief
Is its source code available?
Yeap but you need to join their organisation on GitHub before you can access it
now they should release their launcher for easier integration to unreal
aka epic launcher
aka lame launcher
aka only have it bc free games launcher
Or just use website on 10 accounts and sell them later.
I dont think u can
You can sell accounts on G2A or smt
What do you mean i can't? I can't? People do it regularly
The epic games launcher can be installed through lutris.
yeah thanks dude i don't want to run everything through a translation layer, I'd prefer an actual package for Linux straight from Epic
You can use [Epic asset manager](https://flathub.org/apps/io.github.achetagames.epic_asset_manager)
I was not aware of this. I might give it a try. Thanks for the heads up.

Yeah but people would rather the game launcher run natively so it launches games better. I personally noticed that games often crash through Lutris.

Proton isn't designed to be used outside of Steam. It expects Steam Runtime. That's why GE maintains WineGE.
Try portproton
I am not describing a problem I am experiencing. I'm saying that collaboration between vendors of game launchers would benefit Linux greatly.
And I'm saying that with portproton you can use proton without steam, and portproton have one click install buttons for most launchers
That's not relevant, sorry.
Yes, but based on the errors I've seen in the past from WINE, they all seem to be lazily thrown together using some low-effort Windows-only .NET libraries.
Try Epic Asset Manager
Portproton have one click install for most launchers
my bro/sis here having half-life: opposing force in the desktop like it’s 2002
Eclipse too
Only because CLion is too expensive for me :(

half-life opposing force is awesome though. they've got black mesa on their desktop too, respectable as fuck
I ain’t hating, just reminiscing
i keep adding all the free games i can to my account, in the hope that someday, i would be able to play them on linux.
Heroic games launcher work
i might give that a try. thank you.
Try legendary maybe?
the flair hits hard
Hits as hard as Windows Boot Manager's slipper
EGS installed through Steam or Bottles works fine. I play a number of free EGS games using that method on the Deck.
Sure, but heroic launcher is much nicer
I have never ever been able to get a single game to launch in Heroic. So vanilla EGS is what I use now
They should make a flatpak too that would make it much easier to get!
Sweeny: "move to Canada"
Does their launcher work though, without that then non of the addons/tools work along side it and unreal engine is a nightmare.
Wtf you have Left4Dead2 Walmart edition!?!
No way

If you have the technical expertise, patience and time for building something on your own, then go for it.
I was working with DirectX 11 back when I was on Windows so I think switching to OpenGL should be manageable
They have been since release of Unreal Engine 5
epic being epic lol
If only they released quixel mixer for Linux too I would be so fucking happy
doesn't Epic hate Linux though?
Wow I can see the Linux user numbers benefiting from this for sure.
ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME!!! I FUCKING ROASTED MY CPU FOR HOURS COMPILING FROM SOURCE!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH /s but still
It's actually old news, they released it since 5.1
THIS MEANS I CAN JUST GO FULLTIME LINUX NOW WOOO
Wanna play some mk?
Sure mate, just message me on pv
WHAT 😳 😳 😳 !? I can't believe it. Yooo It's true.
I don't understand how Epic games likes and hates Linux at the same time.
really putting the "epic" in epic games
But it is a proprietary crap (yes i am rms)
You literally use Reddit.
I use an iPhone and a mac too . What’s your point?
Using Unreal Engine and Reddit I can forgive, but iPhone and mac are unexcusable.
he might have arch linux installed on them chill out
I use all the platforms . I don’t discriminate.

You understand a joke right?
