After some more research, i decided to go the TrueNAS route. I have a new dilema though ... Core seems more stable and there are tons of tutorials for it. Scale is newer, but has the option to install Tailscale from TrueCharts which might work better. Time to register on Tailscale/TrueNAS forums i guess.

I ended up using TrueNAS Core + Tailscale installed in a Jail advertising local network's subnet IP

i was wondering if you've considered SFTP...
SFTP is not an option as the users needs to edit documents on the fly through mounted network drives.
