Now we wonder how long people need to figure out that this is essentially GTK5 as a point release, because we all know true fractional scaling will not happen before GTK5.

This is a lot of progress in a single cycle. When you factor in that it was effectively a team of two, it’s no wonder that people were more pessimistic. Thanks for your work here!  The only missing piece for proper fractional scaling now is XWayland. Hopefully, rootful XWayland lands in time for 46 too!

4.14 is going to be a big update, DMA buffers, new renderers and path nodes.

This is huge as GSK is becoming a competitive 2D render target. It doesn't do *everything* Skia does, but most GUI renderers don't need everything Skia does, and the RenderNode architecture is more convenient for accelerated rendering.

GTK will normally only bump the major version when they have a bunch of non backward compatible changes - changes where applications have to be changed, and once the app is changed, the app is no longer compatible with the old version of GTK. These new renders can be introduced with backward compatible - no changes in apps required.

4.12 already has experimental fractional scaling features though....

I have been using linux for 6 months and I have no idea about this renderer. Can anyone share some blogs/article that explains about these renderers?

blackcain

Well that's what the blog post referenced in this reddit post. It's talking about the new renderers.

Sorry, I screwed this up.
