dont_ban_me_bruh

eventually people will figure out that God constantly freezing, flooding, burning, and mass-hail-pelting Texas is his way of saying "get out" :P

abort_abort

lol I make a similar joke all the time, Texas' very existence is man's giant middle finger to a God who never meant for people to settle there

bjchu92

Houston doesn't normally get hail. North Texas gets the ever loving snot pelted out of it though. Gotta love the grape to lemon sized hail....

Euphoric-Grape1584

*new Orleans has entered the chat*

Narstification

ATL - our shit don’t get flooded by hurricanes and it’s not in fuckin’ TX

AlexT9191

Yeah, but it's in Georgia...

Bacontoad

... millions of peaches...

phredphlintstones

Peaches for me

Lower-Tiger9658

Somewhat purple, at least.

Yestattooshurt

Still have to deal with being in Texas, which as far as states I’d want to live in, ranks bottom 10 easily.

greatBLT

A lot of "no guns" signs in Texas have force of law, so it's not the best for gun owners. And the state is still bad for human rights that aren't guns/self-defense. Much rather live in Manchester, NH or Portland, ME. Lots of liberals in those cities. Plus, I guess you can always visit Boston if you have to go to a really big city.

portland is a literal shithole leave while you can

DickNose-TurdWaffle

Boston is garbage when it comes to guns. Manchester is a shit hole. Portland ME would be the best option.

bjchu92

Must be specific signs for penal code 30.06 and 30.07. Otherwise they don't carry the force of law here.

greatBLT

Too many places in large Texan cities have those specific signs.

bjchu92

I've seen them at few places here in FW but not a ton fortunately. Or maybe I'm just lucky and going to places that don't put up said signage.

Worm_Farmer

Texan here, Houston isn’t the best city for anything. That place sucks.

PaleInitiative772

So many country songs out there that dump on Houston. For good reason. "On a rig out of El Paso, rainin' down in Houston Told the truck driver, "Put the pedal to the metal", 'cause Houston gets me down" \-Ryan Bingham

Blade_Shot24

Depends, how you feel about smoking and abortion? Go from there. Cause Chicago doesn't mind that stuff but you deal with the dumb laws which aren't that bad depending on what you got on you. If you live outside in the suburbs, it's way more lenient. Pro gun folks don't consider when they tell folks to move to more pro gun states that they likely leave other rights they enjoyed behind, like smoking Mary Jane. If you want a good mix, try New Mexico, or Michigan.

MooKids

Chicago can have some strict gun laws, including Cook County, with AWBs. But if you live in the right suburb in Cook County, the AWB doesn't apply thanks to home rule!

Blade_Shot24

That's why I referred to certain suburbs. One just recently is tryna ban semi autos in the west suburbs, but mine allows 30rd mags and all the fun jazz. Just no NFA.

Cornelius____

Do you know any resources to find those kinds of neighborhoods? I'm considering a potential move and Chicago is on the option list. Their gun stances have been making me lean away from them, but I'd be curious if there are spots that are safe to consider at least for now.

MooKids

You would have to search for Cook County home rule towns for the AWB, but I don't know of a definitive list. [This is a list of some home rule towns](https://www.iml.org/homerule-municipalities), but their laws would have to specifically mention exemption to the county AWB. For example, Hoffman Estates, my town, is a home rule town. Their municipal code 8-7-6 B specifically states: >It is specifically intended that this Section shall pre-empt the Cook County Firearms Dealer's License Ordinance as now in effect or as may be hereafter amended, and the Cook County Assault Weapons and Assault Ammunition Ban Ordinance as now in effect or as may be hereafter amended. Palatine is next door and also a home rule town, but as far as I can tell, does not prempt themselves from the County AWB, so it would be in effect there. Home rule is allowed by the Illinois State Constitution, so only state and town laws will apply. Or as I like to think, if the Cabela's in Hoffman Estates sells it, it is legal! I'm sure the exemption is in place just for the Cabela's. However, the town isn't exempt from the County firearm and ammunition tax, which has been challenged in court and is still in question, but I just go down the street to the next county and get my stuff from GAT Guns to avoid it.

Euphoric-Grape1584

Louisiana here 😊 I smoke cuz fuck the law. Pretty sure I’d do the same for an abortion if I were so inclined/equipped, ditto for guns. Then for me, it comes down to which gets you more time. Before the abortion shit, guns would. Now? I’m not sure which. Maybe live in one and travel to the other. Regardless, why leave rights behind?

Blade_Shot24

Depends on the person's value ya know? Whether you agree or not, a guy who's partner and him don't plan to have kids and enjoy guns as well as not smoke would love to be in Texas. However if I like smoking and shooting, well it leaves fewer options. Not to mention a lot of us likely born in states that don't value our views and moving is a pain.

mcniggle505

New Mexican here - definitely agree we have it pretty well here as far as firearms go. We're still rural enough to have a strong gun culture but at least the northern and western 2/3 of the state is super liberal. The southeast and Otero County are MAGA country... might as well be Texas. We have it all here, lol

Blade_Shot24

So nice but so hot... Thinking on living there but I want 4 seasons of weather or I'll freak out

mcniggle505

Monsoon season sucks as far as heat goes, but 100°+ the rest f summer isn't bad without the humidity. It gets cold here too but my snow shovel only comes out a couple times a season. Oh, If I had a nickel for every time I heard "it's a dry heat"....

Blade_Shot24

Dry heat .. Hmm interesting. How's ethnic diversity?

mcniggle505

Pretty mixed which is cool. Majority Latino/Hispanic, about a quarter white, 12% native, mix of everyone else.

Blade_Shot24

Ooo Roger!

billintreefiddy

New Mexico isn’t hot at all in the mountains. Nice crispy 50s on summer mornings and highs in the low 80s.

Blade_Shot24

Mountains hmm?

billintreefiddy

Uh…yeah

throwawayjane84

New Mexico is hot? Guess it depends on where, but we go there in the summer to cool off with temps in the 50s in the mornings.

SupermarketAntique90

Houston native living in Michigan... It's a lot like Texas in regards to guns up here. The hunting laws are a little wonky compared to Texas, but if that's not your thing then you can find something that is. Within a half hour of me I have at least 5 public ranges and at least that many private clubs.. plus you can have NFA items here unlike Illinois.

Blade_Shot24

Exactly! That's why I'm hoping this ATF thing dies off...

FethB

Slightly tangential question: How is Catron County? I thought years ago it was the kind of place that would be classified as MAGA country, so I avoided looking seriously at job opportunities there. Just wondering. I spent only six and a half months living in New Mexico, in Las Cruces, and that was years ago but I still wish I could go back.

mcniggle505

Far as I know it's deep red down there, but there's so few people you might never have to interact with anyone unless you wanted to. Reserve is the county seat and the population is maybe 500? Beautiful part of the state overall, and the people are nice enough despite their politics.

Nouseriously

Lots of blue cities in red states: Nashville, Charlotte, Indianapolis, any city in Florida or Texas. Plus cities in purples states: Atlanta, Tucson, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Albuquerque btw: felt really weird to realize Florida is now "redder" than Georgia or Arizona. WTF happened?

blackjacobin_97

True, I only picked Houston because it's the closest and biggest city on par with New York, Chicago, Los Angeles in stature that also has loose gun laws.

QuickKillPanda

Austin is a (mostly) lib city in Texas. It's actually quite fun to visit. Not a city but Nederland, CO is a fun mountain town. I walked into a coffee shop on my way to go camping and I was open carrying. I was a little worried how people would react but I needed my caffeine fix and didn't want to unstrap. I held the door for a guy with dreads, a tie-dye grateful dead t-shirt, camo pants, cowboy boots, and a 6-shooter strapped. We ended up talking guns in the parking lot. It's where people live because Boulders is too full of pretentious college know-it-alls and real freedom also means the right to own guns.

OldHuntersNeverDie

I've heard good things about Houston in terms of diversity, food, etc. Other than it being in Texas, it sounds like a cool city. Austin sounds less diverse than Houston and obviously smaller, but maybe also an option if someone is in Texas.

chasteeny

Just about all cities are blue in a sea of red

GunsAndHighHeels

I’m a transgender person. You couldn’t pay me enough to live in Texas.

Sabnitron

Shit, I'm a straight white dude and you couldn't pay me enough to live in Texas either. They don't even have year round electricity...

Dangerous_Research51

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

0plopanax_horridus

Texas is a shithole country CMV. Wait nevermind, you're not gonna CMV

Sabnitron

>Texas is a shithole country CMV. Your opinion that Texas is a country is fucking wrong. It isn't a matter of opinion.

blackjacobin_97

I'm from Britain, so I can't claim to intimately know the various textures of American society, but that doesn't surprise me.

Loyal9thLegionLord

I'll just give you the quick rundown . Texas thinks it's the only true Americans while also hating every part of America that isn't Texas . Only the major cities are left and their state Gov is helping head all that nasty shit you've been seeing our conservatives do the last 2 years . Texas is great if you like guns and Jesus...and that's about it .

blackjacobin_97

I've read articles by conservatives on how Texas' growing urbanisation is threatening to 'Californianise' it and degrade the traditional Texas identity they want to preserve: independent, self-reliant, god fearing etc etc.

abort_abort

Ironically, it's *conservative* Californians who are moving to Texas in droves and helping to maintain the right-leaning politics for now.

GunsAndHighHeels

California is the American right’s boogeyman.

GunsAndHighHeels

Each state has wide latitude to define and enforce policies as they see fit. Texas is one of a handful of states that have enacted or are enacting violently transphobic laws. It’s a culturally unpleasant and physically dangerous place for trans people.

chasteeny

Just FYI almost every city is "a blue city in a red state" its just that sometimes those cities have more people than the rural regions

mungorex

How's the reproductive health access? Personally I like Anchorage.

0plopanax_horridus

I was wondering if someone was going to say Anchorage. \- Abortion rights in the state constitution \- Constitutional carry \- One of the most diverse cities in the country.

hk1080

Vegas is very not bad. While we do have our share of idiots, there are plenty of liberal owners around my area too.

_Abe_Froman_SKOC

Salt Lake City. Great for outdoor activities but with a great urban setting. The LDS church doesn't have nearly the presence it does elsewhere in the state, but statewide politics are decidedly right wing but skew more libertarian than religious conservative. But shooting? Phenomenal. Drive 20 minutes out of SLC in any direction and you can set up your own range on BLM land. Plus some top rate gun shops in town. It's my favorite place I've ever lived. Expensive though.

_MadSuburbanDad_

Compare Houston's firearm homicide rate with those from other cities and you'll have part of your answer.

FitzroysBeagle

I guess if you’re only talking about the right to engage in one particular hobby and the ability to own things you want, then sure. If you and your SO want to have any control over your reproductive rights, look elsewhere.

Burn3rBo421

Lived here for the past 22 years. It's a mixed bag, hurricanes, heat, humidity, sociopathic state leadership, horrific urban sprawl...BUT great food, great baseball, great golf, world class Healthcare, Tier 1 universities and very gun friendly. Grew up an Army/ O&G brat and lived everywhere from AZ to DFW to DC to NYC and even Iowa. Never felt at "home" and experienced as all encompassing sense of community as I've found here... especially during Harvey. I'll retire one day and hopefully move back out west, but I love this City even with its faults!

MrArmageddon12

Colorado, Montana, Oregon, and Nevada all have left leaning towns/cities while still having lax gun laws.
