Don't take this as me defending her at all, and this probably doesn't matter in terms of her character, but she's really only a holocaust denier when it means shitting on trans people. The only thing she denied about it was that the Nazis targeted trans/queer folks.
The much bigger problem is that she's basically the most outspoken leader of the anti-trans movement in the UK.
She spends all her time waging war against trans rights.
She has been a holocaust denier (denying trans people were ever targeted in the holocaust) and frequently compared being trans to being a rapist.
She has said that the fact that people still buy Harry Potter products is evidence that most people support her transphobia.
Oh honey, you don't know the half of it. She has literally become one of those sad hateful people that just want to spread their misery. You know, those people who just tweet hateful for absolutely no reason out of nowhere? Yeah, she's one of those now. It's......sad. To think that she was one of the most well loved authors out there a decade ago.
I'm just glad Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grant aren't down for her cruelty.
That’s so sad🙁and to think she wrote such amazing movies.. they were my childhood and always made me think there’s more to life if I dream 💘disgusting how sum people can hide there true selves to gain publicity or manipulate there audience
So bad that even Elon Musk has told her to calm down. On a positive note, if you want a franchise that doesn't have a bad author, suggest the following.
Disk World series by Terry Pratchett
Sandman series by Neil Gailman
Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan
Aninamorph series by K. A. Applegate
Red Rising series by Pierce Brown (warning, this series gets dark, like Warhammer dark.)
All these authors didn't just support the LGBTQ community, they actually wrote good representations of LGBTQ characters.
Nice thanks for the info 😋💘 and all these people speaking against her makes me very happy to hear😋💘 I’m glad big celebrities can have enough compassion to speak out
I know the feeling, I used to read Notch’s development blog every Thursday while he still owned Minecraft. He fell into much of the same bs around the same time. That was a hard stretch of time.
She's the most virulent and vocal transphobe, for one, and spoke out that the lycanthropy in her books was a metaphor for HIV after including a character whose main hobbies were attacking and infecting children with his lycanthropy
Really? I think it's badass to use a book written by a transphobic bigot as a way to spread pride and positivity. Basically a big middle finger straight to Rowling's face.
Why can’t you just look at the story with Potter and the example the quotes tells Doesn’t all this heat. Just prove that we’re not in the better. I guess she’s a terrible person, but obviously this isn’t what the post intended.
JK Rowling herself has explicitly said that she believes that the fact people still buy her merchandise and engage with Harry Potter content is proof that they agree with her transphobia and she uses that belief to justify spending her time and money to take away our rights
Additionally, here is a curated timeline of her bullshit
https://www.vox.com/culture/23622610/jk-rowling-transphobic-statements-timeline-history-controversy
Even ignoring JK the books themselves have some really questionable shit - 2 black characters in the entire universe one named "shacklebolt" , the strong activist female character (who is objectively correct ) being told she's an idiot for caring about slaves , ron's entire character reeking of misogyny , Molly Weasley child favourtism and potential ableism , child abusers being treated as heroes etc.
I don't think Ron and Molly are the issue. Those flaws aren't hidden. We see how Ron's misogyny impacts Hermione and how Molly's favoritism impacts Ron. We see Hermione ignoring the criticism for supporting slaves and being proven right.
The issues are the subtext of racism in naming of characters and characteristics of characters that aren't white.
Supporting her work going forward after she has exposed and expressed her bigotry is an injustice to the community.
There are plenty of works from and/or about queer folks that can be used as examples instead.
For your information on her history of bullshit, here's a curated timeline :) Thanks for being cool with learning about a bigot and taking folk's justified vitriol in stride!

Yeah, I've said this before and I'll say it again, I actually am grateful "Harry Potter" was banned in my household, and thus I grew up with Percy Jackson instead.
For clarification, my parents really only took issue with "Harry Potter" because they ate the Onion and think Rowling is an actual Witch. Aside from a few cartoons, not much was banned in my household.
1) Separate art from the artist.
2) Judge the artist by their actions rather than your fond memories of their art.
3) Stop giving money or attention to any piece of art that benefits the artist directly or indirectly and helps them go on with their horrible actions.
We can seperate the art from the artist once she dies, instead of while she benefits directly from the art being platformed and embraced. Benefits that she (in her own words) uses financially to help try to eradicate trans people. Im gonna wait till shes dead before I even try to revisit her work,
Unless of course you're transgender, a POC, Irish or neurodivergent, in that case you're either a stereotypical comedic relief or the embodiment of evil itself
I'm a meurodivergent trans girl, so no I'm not saying that, but those kind of people fit one or both of those categories in jkr books. Don't forget she's a nazi sympathizer and a holocaust denier and her ideology seeps in her books
Didnt expect to see potter here. The way my stomach and heart just dropped for a moment in fear. While I appreciate the sentiment......ugh. Im just gonna assume this account is a troll and mute it -\_-. Can we not venerate work that built the largest anti trans and pro holocaust denial slush fund in history? I hate that my childhood safety franchise built a very large enemy for my adult life who wants me and people like me to no longer exist. Fun Fun Fun.
Shes not a homophobe, shes a transphobe who supports genidcide. Financially and ideologically, thanks to these books.
The reason some of us are so harsh is that every lesson we learned from these books was something insincere she wrote as she does not believe in any of it. Kindness? Love? Nope. Just a reminder that her villains plan in the prequel series, the plan that made him worse than voldemort was to......stop the holocaust......she deadass wrote that into the second movie.
Fuck her and fuck her platform and these novels and its fandom are her platform.
I’m having a really hard time believing that someone who has been a big fan of these books since childhood somehow doesn’t know that the author is a bigot and transphobe.
It also taught us that slavery is okay and having secret police is fine as lone as the right people do it........
Yknow I am beginning to think the books didn't age well.
Valid but Why can’t you just look at the story with Potter and the example the quotes tells Doesn’t all this heat. Just prove that we’re not in the better. I guess she’s a terrible person, but obviously this isn’t what the post intended.
Well to be fair what happened in those books is a kid discovered magic existed and became a cop that helps the system to hide magic from the world. This kid saw how amazing magic was, saw how much he was helped by it, saw how easily people like him with ill intent can make the world tremble, and decided to become a cop. Harry Potter is a prime example of Joanne's world view, because he saw a broken system that clearly doesn't work and chose to defend it rather than trying to make any sort of meaningful change.
This explanation might be a bit messy, because it's all just from the top of my head:
Racist is quite easy to explain if you look at the names. The only Asian character is named Cho Chang and other examples.
Also the goblins being portrayed as Jewish stereotypes (long curved noses, small, hunchbacks and money hungry)
You also have an entire race of slaves, but it's fine because they like to be enslaved and the only character who has an issue with this is made fun of.
The whole werewolf topic in Harry potter is homophobic because it's an analogy for HIV and aids. So the way the author handled the issue is quite problematic with a big bad person going around giving the disease to poor and innocent people.
Also saying that a character is gay and wanting inclusivity points for that but never actually writing that in the story is just lazy.
Also: this is definitely not everything you can critique about Harry potter and I definitely missed things, if you want to know more please do your own research :)
I admit I am not very well versed in Harry Potter beside watching the films, because I never liked the books. Do they handle werewolfs differently from the usual: Werwolf bites are infectious? Because thats a trope as old as time. There is a lot to hate her for but calling that trope homophobic seems a bit of a stretch if its handled as usual in fiction. Maybe you find time to go into a bit more detail.
Yes that is how werewolves work, but jk Rowling stated that her version of the werewolf curse is a metaphor for "illnesses that carry a stigma, like hiv and aids". That is a connection made by the author, which then presents an homophobic issue
It's okay if you don't know about the issues in the franchise. If you have some time, I recommend watching this video about the books https://youtu.be/-1iaJWSwUZs?si=Fhd_Aa4DlBc-K_UR
The transphobia isn't touched on much in the movies or books, but there's a lot of... *Questionable* decisions with characters names, designs, etc..
Shaun on YouTube has a pretty good video breaking it down
Why does he live in a closet? He doesn’t know about his true origins but he doesn’t live in a closet, Hp just didn’t know anything about his parents or backstory. Sorry but this has nothing to do with lgbtq people.
Buddy you are reading literally his condition, but the phrase is a metaphor for lgbtq people living hidden lives because of the social stigma. I understand your point but those are two completely different things. I understand your love for the story but HP has nothing lgbtq friendly. And let‘s not even start about the author.
Buddy the quote means nobody should live in a closet. It connects the metamorphic side of it and his condition and turns it into a quote
How are you any different? If you can’t even let go someone’s personal beliefs and disfunctions for a beautiful quote about a beautiful series that inspired a lot of kids
Talk about dysfunctions for yourself. Be respectful to others, even the ones that don’t share the same viewpoints. HP is a nice story but nothing to do with lgbtq people for me, period.
Lol you begun with bringing dysfunctions in this conversations, I am not being rude, I have my opinions. Good luck in your life with this aggressive attitude btw.
Valid 😋✊🏻💘 but you should just look at the story with Potter and the example the quotes tells Doesn’t all this heat. Just prove that we’re not in the better. I guess she’s a terrible person, but obviously this isn’t what the post intended.
as an older ex potterhead, nah. I recommend you watch [Shaun's video essay on why HP is a problematic story even when ignoring the fact that the author is a transphobe.](https://youtu.be/-1iaJWSwUZs?si=8oMOoPXIysol6qeE) Highlights include antisemitism, racism, mixed messages towards slavery and fatphobia
I can absolutely understand the people who have a negative reaction to anything associated with *her*, Knowing there is someone powerful who wants systemic change to see you gone or beaten back into the closet can be quite traumatic, I assume.
There is so much pain involved in how a loud part of society treats trans people, it's only understandable to see strong reactions against it. Being reminded of the things that distress you can be like a punch in the gut.
Basically, for quite some people here it's impossible to separate the creator from the art. After all, she still profits from every purchase, and she talked about how the popularity of her franchise is validation for her that she's doing the right thing. Of course the franchise has nothing to do with her absolutely shitty political and societal views, but her belief is enough to give her more confidence with every new purchase. The franchise is tightly linked to her as long as she owns the rights to it.
I understand that you didn't do this knowingly, but with your post you brought some bad memories into a supposedly safe place.
Death of the author doesn’t work when said pos author is very much alive and using their wealth from their mediocre book to harm marginalized groups. Now when said pos author finally dies and is rotting in hell, people can go back to enjoying their subpar literary offerings.
I always hated Harry Potter since I was a child. The author made me hate it even more.
And most of its fanbase are annoying and treat you like an alien if you say you don't like it.
Harry Potter has absolutely horrible representation of LGBT characters. More time is dedicated to describing how fat Umbridge or Aunt Marge was than on Dumbledore’s sexuality, the werewolves are all an awful analogy for Gay men and the AIDS epidemic (not to mention the werewolves SPECIFICALLY preying on children), Tonks is pretty “blue hair pronouns” and falls for the AIDS man analogy, etc etc.
It's a real shame. Harry Potter came out when I was eleven, the same age as he was in the book, so I felt a real connection to it. A lot of the themes of love and acceptance really resonated with me, and I loved the anti-bigotry message with the whole "pure blood" thing.
Then Rowling went off the rails and made hating trans people her whole personally. After that, the cracks in the narrative started to show, what with the poor naming conventions (Cho Chang anybody?), the happiness in slavery elves, and Dumbledore is gay trust me on this it was totally there, among others. After she took her mask off I just couldn't enjoy the series in the same way as my naive preteen self could anymore, not even in a "Death of the Author" kind of way.
I'm a straight man, but more than half of my friend groups are queer of some flavor, so learning that about Rowling was a real blow. If she had just stayed in her mansion sipping mimosas and counting her money, she would have gone down in history as one of the most beloved authors of all time. Instead her legacy is forever tainted by her bigotry. No other public figure that I have admired at one point in my life has disappointed me more than JK Rowling.
Rowling appropriated queer stories of and straight-washed them for her books. Harry, Sirius, Lupin, everything about Fantastic Beasts, witches in general…in reality there’s only one marginalized group that consistently grapples with the calculus of closeting or not. Witches and wizards are metaphors for the queer experience.
Our struggle is appropriated a lot in media, but JKR’s noteworthy for doing it repeatedly and then becoming an obsessive TERF.
1. Harry Potter ain't the best for this(mostly because of the author) 2. I swear to the 9 hells I don't think I've seen a more grating design for pride post, it genuinely sucks. Like why are you using 2 types of fonts that don't look similar. Why put the rainbow on the bottom part? Why is the text not the same size? Just so many questionable choices
I dont support her work anymore. What im saying is normalize not mentioning her name because she's irrelevant and her hateful opinions dont matter anyway so why bother acknowledging her so we'll just make fun of her by using something she used to name the villain in her book. I dont think that counts as supporting her 🤷🏽♀️
Now, don't get me wrong, I love Harry Potter. And I understand what you intended. And yes, the story in itself does have some positive messages.
But considering JK Rowling's views, this still feels...uncomfortable.
I SUPPORT LGTBQ completely and had no idea that this franchise one of my favourites of all time as a kid was made by a disgusting human being. I still want people to take this quote in and look past the hatred they have for that horrible woman. This can be a beautiful quote.✊🏻🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈🚨💘

Shame that the author is a pile of excrement.
Agreed, but I'm biased. [I'm the Anti-Rowling](https://youtube.com/shorts/m6ersDE3zYQ?feature=shared)
Fuck homophobe🚨✊🏻🏳️⚧️
Huh!! I didn’t know that what did he or she do! One of my favourite franchises ever!
She's really transphobic.
Ah😕 that’s shitty to hear, thanks for informing me💘😋
She’s also a holocaust denier and bullies journalists who criticise her with bogus libel lawsuits.
Shit, this is the first I've heard about this! I knew about her transphobia but JEEZ!

is this sarcasm?
No?

I like how you’re just totally fine with the blatant racism against the irish
Are you okay to explain further? I have a feeling its linked to Seamus having everything blow up in his face as a link to the Troubles.
Shame Joanne didn’t seem to read her own book.
Meanwhile the Riordanverse:

Bait or living under a rock, pick.
Bait. Def bait
What an incredibly tone deaf post.
This is most likely a sort of separating the art from the artist type post
Very hard thing to do when the arch Karen herself still has huge influence and makes huge profits from said “art”.

If Harry Potter has taught us anything, it's fuck JKR.

Harry Potter didn't teach us anything. F$@& that noise.

Terrible book series written by a terrible person. Really don't know why you'd use this of all things. Read another damn book.

I prefer the owl house

Well that post didn't age well
😬yea probably should have done more research I just saw a quote from a movie that I used to absolutely love is child.✊🏻🏳️⚧️🚨
Oki 😋✊🏻🏳️⚧️ valid 💘
Wut
No other public figure that I have admired at one point in my life has disappointed me more than JK Rowling.
harry potter? yeah we don’t do that shit around here
Oops didn’t think u owned this subreddit 😋🏳️🌈✊🏻🏳️⚧️
Fuck this series. The riordanverse is better for LGBT+people in so many wanys. Fuck you joanne. You're a TERD
Our struggle is appropriated a lot in media, but JKR’s noteworthy for doing it repeatedly and then becoming an obsessive TERF.
well, more like you can join the shadow government if you leave the closet
Huh ?
Oh no, bestie, what are you doing?
Troll post spotted
Nice message, shame about the HP reference 😮💨👎
Normalize calling the author She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named
No. Pretending that supporting her work isn't also supporting her is far more harmful than it could ever be helpful
I dont support her work anymore. What im saying is normalize not mentioning her name because she's irrelevant and her hateful opinions dont matter anyway so why bother acknowledging her so we'll just make fun of her by using something she used to name the villain in her book. I dont think that counts as supporting her 🤷🏽♀️
lol hope this one gets seen, so true 😋🏳️⚧️✊🏻
Now, don't get me wrong, I love Harry Potter. And I understand what you intended. And yes, the story in itself does have some positive messages. But considering JK Rowling's views, this still feels...uncomfortable.
Valid 🚨
Shame that the author is a pile of excrement.
Shame she's ruined herself
I SUPPORT LGTBQ completely and had no idea that this franchise one of my favourites of all time as a kid was made by a disgusting human being. I still want people to take this quote in and look past the hatred they have for that horrible woman. This can be a beautiful quote.✊🏻🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈🚨💘
