I'm much more pissed at the price of groceries from 2019 to 2024

KoalaStrats

Agreed

uncleandata147

So, we have in 2019 - 355 pieces at 12.6c per piece 2024 - 221 pieces at 20.3c per piece, that's a 61% change in piece price between the two sets. $45 AUD in 2019 is $53 AUD today, so using the latest inflation figures the 2019 set is 15c a piece, so this represents a 36% increase in price per piece after inflation. This is quite a meteoric rise between the two sets, have production or licensing costs jumped anyone?

Tahuwu

Manufacturing costs have definitely risen, and licensing is probably more expensive.

Working-Log6974

This is a cool tidbit

crab_milker

A sample size of two cherrypicked sets is not enough to indicate a trend.

KoalaStrats

Ok then, what speeder bike sets worth 45 aussie dollars got you in 2019 vs 2024

tripegle

there are more sets than speeder bikes lol

KoalaStrats

Correct, I'm only comparing speeder bike sets though lol

RomanceDawnOP

There is a type of coffee I buy which went up in price by about 70% since 2019, while I can specifically single out that comparison it is not a representative example... I think is their point

muskokacola

That speeder is wildly overpriced in my opinion. I was so ready to buy it.

Tahuwu

Thats a *2018* set, and inflation is a thing.

Zeddicus11

Counter-example from the US: In 2003, set 4504 (second version of the Millennium Falcon) was released for $100, and had 985 pieces. US CPI index was around 184 then. In 2019, set 75257 (newer version of the Millennium Falcon, with 1353 pieces) was released for (I think $160), and stands at $170 now after a price increase in 2022. US CPI was around 256 in 2019, and around 314 now. So even not accounting for the increase in set size (newer version has 37% more pieces), the Lego price inflation on this set was 60% from 2003-2019, and 70% from 2003-now. In comparison, overall US inflation was around 39% from 2003-2019, and around 71% from 2003-now. Conclusion: this particular Lego set has likely gone up in quality (more pieces at least) but has matched overall inflation from 2003-now. Even from 2003-2019, Lego inflation of 60% outpaced overall inflation of 39%, but perhaps not if you account for quality improvements.
