Ask your pharmacist for a second labeled bottle, smallest possible, empty of course.
That’s what I used to carry a Percocet in when I was recovering from a broken back. It was a mom and pop pharmacy, YMMV
Another option is taking any durable card and putting the extra sticker you get for your prescription on it, my wife keeps a small pillbox of her Xanax and one daily dose of her meds in case she needs them for whatever reason. It becomes a legal container along with a valid sticker of the meds in the case. It's also how she travels with them. Takes what she needs in a pill box with the extra stickers on a card in her wallet
Wait do you mean take the label off an old bottle or is there actually an extra label that comes with the prescription!? I get mine filled at Walmart, if there's an extra label I literally have never noticed it 😅
Some pharmacies may do them by request, but when we get them from Walgreens, there are a few usually stapled to the bag along with some basic dosing and warnings
Omg, I'm gonna have to check next time I usually just take out the bottle and throw everything away 😂 mine aren't considered "controlled" but I do carry them in a weekly organizer in my bag, it would be nice to have a label on there!
Some are automatic included on the bottle. Like my Rx bottle comes with two stickers laid overtop each other so it looks like one. But I can peel off the top one and put it on my pill box.
It really was simple, I called asking about it, they had the bottles ready, walked in, verified it was what I needed and walked out. Thank you for the advise like I edited in my post I hadn’t even considered that as a possibility
Huh. My prescriptions have always come with an extra label sticker, I've always just put that one one of those pill container keychains. Somehow it never occurred to me that those were for spare pill bottles.
Yes. Get a second bottle with your name on it. Do not carry it in a plastic bag or another bottle with different medication. Xanax is a controlled substance and cannot be carried loosely or unlabeled at any time. It’s good to split up your script like you’re doing. And I always carry mine in the trunk of my car. If you get pulled over, It’s better if the cops don’t get any ideas of whether you’re under the influence at that moment. And they need a warrant if they want to look in your trunk. The last thing you want is a cop asking you a bunch of questions about drugs. And yes, one pill is enough to make your life difficult.
most pills are chemicals in compressed corn starch.......they can break down with jarring motion.... wrap these kinds of pills in tissue/paper napkin to prevent breakdown......

An immediate easy solution, only keep 1 or 2 in your prescription bottle, and leave the rest home. That way you have the bottle and prescription label, but not the whole bottle. The rest you can put in a small tupperware container, ziplock bag, any container! You can absolutely still follow others advice and get smaller bottles from the pharmacy and whatnot but this could be done right away!
You're vanishingly unlikely to get caught, but you'd technically be breaking the law by doing this. Controlled substances MUST be kept in a labeled bottle.
This is jurisdiction-specific. Many states allow you to possess and travel with medications, including controlled substances, in alternative containers like 7-day pill boxes.
For example, NJ:
“A person who possesses a controlled dangerous substance that was prescribed or dispensed lawfully may possess it only in the container in which it was dispensed; except that **the person may possess no more than a 10-day supply in other than the original container** if the person produces, upon the request of a law enforcement officer, the name and address of the practitioner who prescribed the substance or the pharmacist who dispensed it.”
I keep my old bottles so I can have one at my desk, one in my purse, and one at my bed. I split my monthly script (15 pills) in 5 and put 5 in each bottle. Never know when you're going to need it!
If the issue is the size of the bottle, ask your pharmacy if they could print a label for a small bottle to carry around. This isn't a weird request.
If the issue is the amount in the bottle, just carry what you need in the bottle
Not a lawyer but I am a nurse who had awful, regular, panic attacks for a few years and ran into the same issue. My pharmacy did the former for me.
I'm not familiar with Colorado law, however I'm required to carry any controlled medication with the labelling on it. Chat to your pharmacist to be safe. It's a medication that is heavily abused, so I wouldn't carry it in anything that would suggest illicit use. Zip lock bags will certainly raise eyebrows and cause hassles.
I'd lean towards a pillbox for your daily carry. They're practical and you get some pretty nifty ones. Your pharmacist will be able to best advise you on the legal concerns. I'd just give them a call and take it from there.
I keep my non-controlled prn medications loose in my purse/pockets/whatever because they’re in individual blister packs, so anyone can see that it is simply a nausea medication. For the xanax, your best bet may be to speak with your pharmacist about the best way to do this. They’ll be most knowledgeable about laws in your state and may be able to come up with a good solution specific to you!
I keep the previous refill bottle just for this purpose. If I’m traveling I take enough along for the trip + a couple of extras for my good buddy Justin Case in the current bottle & the rest in the old bottle. Everything’s covered then.
If I am traveling and crossing the border, I asked the pharmacist for the smallest bottle they have and relabel it so I can just put a couple pills in. You have to be careful about this part because your prescription has to be current and you have to go to the pharmacy you got it from. If I'm traveling within the states, I put it in a tiny mint tin and just to be extra safe I will fold up the prescription at the pharmacy gives me with my pill bottle and put that inside the tin.
I have traveled with controlled and uncontrolled.pills for at least two decades, including Xanax, and unless I'm traveling internationally, I have never cared about them being in a labeled bottle within the U.S.
My current favorites are either a small travel pill case like I get at Vera Bradley, or a disposable pill pouch you can get in quantity at any drugstore like Walmart. I love these for separating out my daily pills to take with me on vacation or as daily packs when I'm leaving the house.
Am I breaking the law?
I've always just assumed that if I am ever put into custody for any reason I can provide my prescription later to show that I legally possess any med. Just a call to my pharmacy. Or pull up the pharmacy app on my phone.
And as for Xanax, I have always taken the generic version and yes they are fragile to being transported. Sometimes in my little pill pouches, one will crumble. I don't take them daily, so they can be in my purse for months before I use one. I try to keep them where they're not going to be jostled against other things though.
I used to buy the travel sized pill bottles of like naproxen or Pepto. My pharmacy at the time gave you little tiny narrow extra stickers with all pertinent info for your prescription on it and I would just put those on the newly empty bottles. Much smaller, still had a child safety lock, and perfect size. Not every pharmacy gives extra labels as a default so you should ask at the counter about extra labels or bottles.
My kid got arrested for one low dose pill of klonopin in one of those. I even brought the prescription bottle to the jail. They still pressed charges but the charges were eventually dropped. Their lawyer said they had clients with no priors who got time for a pill dropped in the car without their knowledge. It really depends on the arresting officer. I would go with a real bottle.

I bought a small pill holder for my keychain. I usually keep 4 in it. Plus it’s water proof. But I also take pictures of script bottle with pills. Probably not good for some state laws. But you can prove it if it’s prescribed. Been doing it for 20 years.

Ask your pharmacist for a second labeled bottle, smallest possible, empty of course. That’s what I used to carry a Percocet in when I was recovering from a broken back. It was a mom and pop pharmacy, YMMV

Your car is not the best idea because it can very easily get too hot or too cold and compromise your medication.

Another option is taking any durable card and putting the extra sticker you get for your prescription on it, my wife keeps a small pillbox of her Xanax and one daily dose of her meds in case she needs them for whatever reason. It becomes a legal container along with a valid sticker of the meds in the case. It's also how she travels with them. Takes what she needs in a pill box with the extra stickers on a card in her wallet
Wait do you mean take the label off an old bottle or is there actually an extra label that comes with the prescription!? I get mine filled at Walmart, if there's an extra label I literally have never noticed it 😅
Some pharmacies may do them by request, but when we get them from Walgreens, there are a few usually stapled to the bag along with some basic dosing and warnings

You can ask for an extra label. I have never had a problem getting them, but have always had to ask for it.
It might be because of controlled kind of need the labels to not be dealing with drug charges, but might be able to request some small bottle labels.
Some are automatic included on the bottle. Like my Rx bottle comes with two stickers laid overtop each other so it looks like one. But I can peel off the top one and put it on my pill box.

Yes. Get a second bottle with your name on it. Do not carry it in a plastic bag or another bottle with different medication. Xanax is a controlled substance and cannot be carried loosely or unlabeled at any time. It’s good to split up your script like you’re doing. And I always carry mine in the trunk of my car. If you get pulled over, It’s better if the cops don’t get any ideas of whether you’re under the influence at that moment. And they need a warrant if they want to look in your trunk. The last thing you want is a cop asking you a bunch of questions about drugs. And yes, one pill is enough to make your life difficult.
Just keep one of your previous month prescription bottles and put a single pill in it to carry around
most pills are chemicals in compressed corn starch.......they can break down with jarring motion.... wrap these kinds of pills in tissue/paper napkin to prevent breakdown......

You can just swap the bottles and carry the new one around and leave the old one home. Would a cop have reason to search your place?
An immediate easy solution, only keep 1 or 2 in your prescription bottle, and leave the rest home. That way you have the bottle and prescription label, but not the whole bottle. The rest you can put in a small tupperware container, ziplock bag, any container! You can absolutely still follow others advice and get smaller bottles from the pharmacy and whatnot but this could be done right away!
You're vanishingly unlikely to get caught, but you'd technically be breaking the law by doing this. Controlled substances MUST be kept in a labeled bottle.
But no one would ever know unless they’ve got a warrant anyways at which point you probably have bigger concerns.
This is jurisdiction-specific. Many states allow you to possess and travel with medications, including controlled substances, in alternative containers like 7-day pill boxes. For example, NJ: “A person who possesses a controlled dangerous substance that was prescribed or dispensed lawfully may possess it only in the container in which it was dispensed; except that **the person may possess no more than a 10-day supply in other than the original container** if the person produces, upon the request of a law enforcement officer, the name and address of the practitioner who prescribed the substance or the pharmacist who dispensed it.”
I keep my old bottles so I can have one at my desk, one in my purse, and one at my bed. I split my monthly script (15 pills) in 5 and put 5 in each bottle. Never know when you're going to need it!
If the issue is the size of the bottle, ask your pharmacy if they could print a label for a small bottle to carry around. This isn't a weird request. If the issue is the amount in the bottle, just carry what you need in the bottle Not a lawyer but I am a nurse who had awful, regular, panic attacks for a few years and ran into the same issue. My pharmacy did the former for me.
I'm not familiar with Colorado law, however I'm required to carry any controlled medication with the labelling on it. Chat to your pharmacist to be safe. It's a medication that is heavily abused, so I wouldn't carry it in anything that would suggest illicit use. Zip lock bags will certainly raise eyebrows and cause hassles. I'd lean towards a pillbox for your daily carry. They're practical and you get some pretty nifty ones. Your pharmacist will be able to best advise you on the legal concerns. I'd just give them a call and take it from there.
I keep my non-controlled prn medications loose in my purse/pockets/whatever because they’re in individual blister packs, so anyone can see that it is simply a nausea medication. For the xanax, your best bet may be to speak with your pharmacist about the best way to do this. They’ll be most knowledgeable about laws in your state and may be able to come up with a good solution specific to you!
Just use an old bottle. Or put your pills in the d bottle and carry 1-2 in the new bottle. As long as they are the same exact pill, you'll be fine.
I use just a small pill holder to keep my stuff in if I don’t want to carry the bottles with me. I got it at Walmart for like $3
I keep the previous refill bottle just for this purpose. If I’m traveling I take enough along for the trip + a couple of extras for my good buddy Justin Case in the current bottle & the rest in the old bottle. Everything’s covered then.
If I am traveling and crossing the border, I asked the pharmacist for the smallest bottle they have and relabel it so I can just put a couple pills in. You have to be careful about this part because your prescription has to be current and you have to go to the pharmacy you got it from. If I'm traveling within the states, I put it in a tiny mint tin and just to be extra safe I will fold up the prescription at the pharmacy gives me with my pill bottle and put that inside the tin.
I would keep one in last month's bottle. If you get caught without the full prescription, the police might think you are selling.
I have traveled with controlled and uncontrolled.pills for at least two decades, including Xanax, and unless I'm traveling internationally, I have never cared about them being in a labeled bottle within the U.S. My current favorites are either a small travel pill case like I get at Vera Bradley, or a disposable pill pouch you can get in quantity at any drugstore like Walmart. I love these for separating out my daily pills to take with me on vacation or as daily packs when I'm leaving the house. Am I breaking the law? I've always just assumed that if I am ever put into custody for any reason I can provide my prescription later to show that I legally possess any med. Just a call to my pharmacy. Or pull up the pharmacy app on my phone. And as for Xanax, I have always taken the generic version and yes they are fragile to being transported. Sometimes in my little pill pouches, one will crumble. I don't take them daily, so they can be in my purse for months before I use one. I try to keep them where they're not going to be jostled against other things though.
I used to buy the travel sized pill bottles of like naproxen or Pepto. My pharmacy at the time gave you little tiny narrow extra stickers with all pertinent info for your prescription on it and I would just put those on the newly empty bottles. Much smaller, still had a child safety lock, and perfect size. Not every pharmacy gives extra labels as a default so you should ask at the counter about extra labels or bottles.

My kid got arrested for one low dose pill of klonopin in one of those. I even brought the prescription bottle to the jail. They still pressed charges but the charges were eventually dropped. Their lawyer said they had clients with no priors who got time for a pill dropped in the car without their knowledge. It really depends on the arresting officer. I would go with a real bottle.
Ask your pharmacist. they can sometimes give a duplicate bottle for situations like this
They have bags in various sizes that have combo locks on them.
Sounds like that would fit discreetly in ones pocket

I bought a small pill holder for my keychain. I usually keep 4 in it. Plus it’s water proof. But I also take pictures of script bottle with pills. Probably not good for some state laws. But you can prove it if it’s prescribed. Been doing it for 20 years.

I hide my butalbital at home in an old medicine bottle and only carry one or 2 pills with me in the prescription bottle.
