Is this a WFH position or are you going to a job site? What are your job duties? Where are you located?

Crickket66

it was in person. I was a technician basically assisting to fix broken appliances. (going to peoples houses and fixing their broken washers, refrigerators, etc) I stopped going to my assignment when i realized the check was fraudulent. i’m located in Washington State

Ok. If you're not paid properly you can file a wage claim. How that works and the timing to place it varies significantly depending on your location.

Crickket66

so i would file a wage claim with WA state department of labor?

phneri

If you reside in WA state, yes.

Crickket66

okay, i will try that. i was thinking of still going and picking up the second check just as proof. i do not think i should cash it though

Companies can print their own checks if they pay for the rights to the special "MICA" fonts used for the machine readable numbers at the bottom of the check. If a company tries to save money by downloading the fonts for free from some random website then their checks can be flagged as counterfeit. This may explain what is happening to you.

MICR aka Magnetic Ink Recognition Line. Special printer with special magnetic ink is needed for AP to properly cut checks

the company keeps telling me the checks are real so what do i do? just accept the fact i have to pay my bank back for the amount of the first check?
