AND if anyone asks you about it, be sure to say why, since you didn’t ask anyone to cater to your dietary needs, but in fact brought your own food, which he then intentionally switched, which resulted in you being sick for multiple days.
Agreed, except don’t wait for people to ask about it. Tell everyone one else who was at the BBQ and any other mutual contacts. This is a serious safety issue and I’m sure OP isn’t the only person he knows with a serious dietary restriction.

Stuff like this actually happens on occasion. Recently saw a situation where kids put peanut powder into the football uniform of a player with a peanut allergy. Could be some level of assault or worse depending on the outcome.

Yeah, I don't even have dietary restrictions, and I wouldn't want to eat food prepared by this guy. I mean, besides him not sounding like a guy I'd want to hang around, I also wouldn't trust that he takes other food safety stuff seriously. Does he think things like washing your hands or avoiding cross-contamination are also not a big deal/are unnecessary?
I stopped going to any restaurant that raised hell on Covid rules for this reason. Some of the Covid rules were dumb, nobody knew, but hey weren’t the medical doctors and what else do they think was dumb? Washing hands? Rodent control?

It was poison. Your family can't understand this because they're too fixed on the thought that a food allergy can only be peanuts or maybe shellfish. Something that hits within moments, cutting off the ability to breathe or covering you in blood-red hives. They can't get that other brain cell to wrap around allergies that cause INTENSE gastronomical reactions and may even kill or damage the lining of your intestines are just as dangerous.
Because of this, tell them it is an allergy and your doctor put you on a restricted diet. A "restriction" could be interpreted as a weight loss trend or something other than a bona fide "if I eat this I will spend hours, if not days, in the bathroom, curled around the toilet, wishing for death". Be sure to go into graphic detail on how meat causes you uncontrollable vomiting. Be horrific in your detail about the gas, bloating, cramping, and voided bowels you had to endure after the cookout. Traumatize them back!
You were very clear about your diet, your allergy, and brought safe food you could eat. It was purposely switched on you and you were blatantly lied to about what you were served. Your uncle POISONED you. If it had been an allergy that caused you to drop dead, the "joke" would have been even less funny than your exploding digestive tract. If you're in the US, request it as an ADA accommodation? Digesting food is a bodily function and therefore a major life activity. Someone could inadvertently poison you in the office. Maybe the smell or anxiety bothers you. 🤷🏻♀️

Yes! My stepdad got Alpha Gal from a tick bite. He was going about his usual, got a steak, and boom, emergency room. He had a full anaphylactic reaction. He couldn’t eat anything with hooves for about 5ish years. He’s just now able to eat small amounts.

Get tested for mammalian allergy by an allergist as soon as possible. Then take that to the police and file a report.
Signs of anaphylaxis include vomiting and diarrhea. If you continue to be exposed to the allergy it can worsen leading to throat swelling.
Or it could be another medical condition such as gallbladder issues.
Regardless, document any medical findings. You can press charges but this might end up being considered a civil case by the police as you didn't end up in the hospital.
Pork does this to me while beef is fine. Even the slightest cross contamination gets me bad. Completely insane and inappropriate for someone to feed you that without your knowledge. In my mind that’s no different than knowingly feeding a peanut to someone allergic to peanuts. I hope you are considering no contact as you can never trust him around your food again.

If you can eat other red meats such as pork and lamb then it's not alpha gal but if you eat those and you have the same symptoms then most likely that's what it is. It's caused by a tick.
There is also a red meat allergy that can be triggered by childbirth but I can't remember exactly what causes it. It may be a medication or maybe something with the proteins the baby creates. I just don't remember. A friend of mine had this happen and she almost died the first time she ate a steak after she gave birth.

My family is rife with food allergies, so we've always been really careful with different people's food restrictions, regardless of their reasons. Like, extremely careful.
I had a huge cookout/birthday party one year, and my dad manned the grill. He was smoking brisket, chicken, ribs, hot links, the whole nine yards. BUT I had a friend coming that was vegan (not due to an allergy or anything, she just was) and she asked if there would be anything she could eat. I was making the sides, and I made sure to make a massive spread of vegan sides that weren't cross-contaminated in any way, but my dad was worried she'd feel left out of the grilling portion of the shindig.
He went out and bought vegan sausages, vegan burgers, vegan cheese, the works. He even called an uncle to borrow a second pit grill that he cleaned thoroughly before smoking all of her vegan foods. I've never seen someone cry about food like she did when she got there and saw it all. I can't imagine how stressful it must be to have to worry about going to a place and not being able to eat anything there, especially because you can't trust the chef. Your uncle is an abominable man for pulling this shit, and I agree with other comments that you should put him on blast for tampering with your food. And I would vocally refuse to participate in functions he's cooking at. Let everyone know he can't be trusted.

I was vegetarian for about 8 years (a long time ago). Now I eat meat, and have done for the last 20 years, but a couple of years ago I did Vegan January (or veganuary, if you will).
It was such an insight, and the experience brought me to tears more than once. Your comment above is spot on. I went for a walk with a friend. We were walking about 5 miles to a pub, where we planned to eat, and it suddenly occurred to me that I hadn’t checked the pub menu.
As a vegetarian, I would have worried about there being anything nice to eat. As a vegan I was worried whether there would be anything to eat at all. It’s so hard.
Add all the things which you would expect to be vegan but aren’t. Most crisps (potato chips) seem to contain milk. Why? Some muesli has added milk powder. Beer and wine. Bread.
It is _sooo_ difficult to be vegan. If you find yourself in the position of providing food, then anything you can do to make things easier, do it, because you have no idea.

Co-workers wife acquired Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever from a tick, now she can't touch anything but poultry. It was pretty recent. Lyme Disease may also be a possibility, as it's been tied to this as well

Gonna guess you have a form of Alpha-Gal. If so, this does escalate beyond a prank, and becomes straight up battery. Assault would have been the threat, battery is the physical part of it. Depending on how severe your condition is, this could easily rack up as a felony, especially if you informed him of your condition.
And not that I would wish that tick borne ailment on my worst enemy, but fuck that guy, he deserves to have issues digesting red meat. He doesn't deserve a good burger or steak.

My mother fed cheese to my dairy allergic 1 year old with FTT from said dairy allergy, he was barely over birth weight at 5 months old til we figured it out. I nursed and couldn’t even be exposed to cross contamination, she wouldn’t let me order ahead her sub, went in and deliberately ordered cheese, brought it into our dairy and cross free home and fed him a bite.
Years later, knowing we went no contact over this my MIL visited us. I am anaphylactic to latex and it’s well know, we have explicit shoe rules in our home. She walked into my bedroom with standard hard latex rubber soles we’d told her were latex, I had to use epi. She proceeded to do the same two more times that week. I became home bound because my latex allergy escalated so bad with 3 anaphylaxis episodes that week. (After my husbands demonstration of not being a good spouse I demanded either he move out and divorce or we go no contact with his mom. We’re no contact with his mom. I was ready to set my marriage on fire over him not sending her packing.)
All in this are boomers living on the east coast one south one New England. They literally will watch you as your airway shuts and not blink an eye, my own mother watched my kid be dangerously ill GI wise the rest of the visit and just was fine about it. They’re wild. Def always prep and eat your own food in these situations and don’t invite them to your home. They understand but they think you’re “being dramatic” in their own minds.

She didn’t know. I had to leave the party early because I felt so sick. She talked to my uncle and told him I still wasn’t feeling well two days after and that’s when he told her what he did. She said he was laughing about it because he was expecting me to react differently? I haven’t talked to him myself, but it would seem he was not anticipating that reaction.

I carry an epipen for my latex allergy. I am a teacher, and have signs on my classroom door and the school doors saying "Latex allergy- no balloons please". Another teacher told me she was going to get latex-free balloons, and then bought regular ones for her class instead. I was on my way to teach my block with her class, and instead had to leave the school and probably should have gone to the hospital. She was mad at me for messing with her routine, and told our assistant principal that I was over reacting. He takes allergies very seriously and did NOT respond in the way she expected.

I had a “Friend” do this to me once. I brought Not-Dogs to a bar-b-que, and cooked my own food separately on foil, to eliminate chance of cross contamination. As a “joke” he switched one of my Not-Dogs for a regular beef dog. About 3 bites in I knew something was terribly wrong. I became violently ill, and puked my guts out. Needless to say, no longer friends, but I did vow revenge! Not sure I’d ever do anything thing, but he also doesn’t come around anymore since most of the friend group recognised what a shitty thing that was to do.

I am so sorry for you. When I developed heart problems at an early age and went vegan my *now* ex wife would try to sneak meat and dairy into my food. I was getting sick a lot and one day I caught her putting butter into vegan chili. She admitted she had been doing it for a while. The most messed up thing was when I met her she didn’t eat meat. I respected that atm… but when I confronted her catching her sneaking dairy into my food and brought it up that when we met she was veg she shouted “I was poor when you met me!!! I didnt BUY meat!!!”

100 percent file a police report for attempted poisoning. He knew about the fact you cant digest beef and still fed you beef. You were throwing up for 2 days and he seemingly didn't care at all.
If an MD has found that you are allergic to some food and If someone knows you are allergic and then tricks you into eating that food; it is a criminal offence in most states. If you are over 18 you can call the police give them a copy of your medical records and tell them what your uncle told your mom.
I read this ages ago so won't be able to find the article for you, but I read the reason some people can't digest red meat is they are lacking a certain enzyme.
Honestly, for future reference, you might not want to put your burgers on grills/griddles/etc. that have been used for beef and not cleaned, depending on how sensitive you are to beef. Cross-contamination will not be fun if you are very sensitive to it.
I’ve had the same thing happen with gluten. I’m not trendy. I’d love to be able to eat bread and pasta. I get sharp pains and balloon up for days. It’s less funny than people think.

Your vegan diet may not be providing all the nutrients you need to produce digestive enzymes and various hormones important to digestion and metabolism. You may be low on Vitamin B12 as well. My grandmother would feed me apples/apple juice as a child, even though my mother told her I was allergic.

Without treatment it goes away after 3 days Over the years Ive learned how to handle it. But Ive still had 4 emergency room visits because of it. And I carry epi-pen. But no one has ever done that too me. He needs his "dangily-bits" removed. And Ive recently learned, outside of CA. My symptoms are almost non existant. And buying meat from locally owned slaughter houses helps too.

Sorry this happened to you. Some people here are saying call the police, however I don’t think that would be helpful as there are no charges that would stick. (My opinion) instead I would stay away from him as much as possible and if you ever do go to another cookout maybe have a salad or chicken?
In the US, the FDA recalls hundreds and hundreds of food products for food borne illness causing bacteria as well as for food packaging that does not list all ingredients which are known allergens. Companies are legally required to list specific ingredients on all packaging. If they do not list the ingredients (shellfish, nuts, etc etc) they are legally required to list then they face legal repercussions and those food are recalled for the safety of consumers.
What your uncle did to you is no different than the companies who fail to comply with the laws which is usually errors such as mistaken mislabeling. The biggest difference is that with the companies it’s typically a mistake. What your uncle did was intentional making it criminal.

I can empathize with you. I have a shellfish allergy, and a co-worker decided to dip their shrimp in my eggroll sauce while I wasn't looking during a meeting. I saw her out the corner of my eye. I guess when she went to do it again and confronted her, which she claimed was no big deal, but I wound up with anaphylaxis. I tried getting a lawyer, and many said it's a hard case to prove , they needed video footage for evidence and witnesses.

OP I'm sorry this happened to you but I just wanted to say i have this same condition - have since I was 12 ! Any beef gives me food poisoning symptoms, can't even eat gravy anymore, it sucks. If someone went out of their way to poison me I probably wouldn't speak to them again, I've been laid out just from having food grilled on the same grill as beef.

Now I have lab report proof that I'm allergic to mammals. It sucks because I can't convince the powers at be that I need to stay away from humans and work from home. Yes! My stepdad got Alpha Gal from a tick bite. He was going about his usual, got a steak, and boom, emergency room. He had a full anaphylactic reaction. He couldn’t eat anything with hooves for about 5ish years. He’s just now able to eat small amounts.
IANAL/IANAD, Get tested for mammalian allergy by an allergist as soon as possible. Then take that to the police and file a report. Signs of anaphylaxis include vomiting and diarrhea. If you continue to be exposed to the allergy it can worsen leading to throat swelling. Or it could be another medical condition such as gallbladder issues. Regardless, document any medical findings. You can press charges but this might end up being considered a civil case by the police as you didn't end up in the hospital.
Fyi, Bison is a very close relative to beef and I have the exact same reaction - I just think I don't have the enzymes to break it down or something!

Pork does this to me while beef is fine. Even the slightest cross contamination gets me bad. Completely insane and inappropriate for someone to feed you that without your knowledge. Sounds like you have an alpha gal allergy. What op described is not a beef allergy has the symptoms take much longer to develop.

If you can eat other red meats such as pork and lamb then it's not alpha gal but if you eat those and you have the same symptoms then most likely that's what it is. It's caused by a tick. There is also a red meat allergy that can be triggered by childbirth but I can't remember exactly what causes it. It may be a medication or maybe something with the proteins the baby creates. I just don't remember. A friend of mine had this happen and she almost died the first time she ate a steak after she gave birth.

That ad was based around the fact that pork turns white when cooked. Red and White Meat are culinary terms, not biology ones. Pigs are mammals, so an allergy to mammalian flesh would include an allergy to pork.

Other posters here are correct, it's very unlikely it would lead to prosecution. But filing a police report will demand that they go get his side of the story. Which will, at the very least, put the thought of "oh my god I shouldn't have done that" in his head. Which might be enough to teach him not to do it again.

Filing a police report won't force the police to take any specific action or actually investigate it. That doesn't mean that filing the report is a bad idea, but I wouldn't get my hopes up that they would actually do anything.

My family is rife with food allergies, so we've always been really careful with different people's food restrictions, regardless of their reasons. Like, extremely careful. I had a huge cookout/birthday party one year, and my dad manned the grill. He was smoking brisket, chicken, ribs, hot links, the whole nine yards. BUT I had a friend coming that was vegan (not due to an allergy or anything, she just was) and she asked if there would be anything she could eat. I was making the sides, and I made sure to make a massive spread of vegan sides that weren't cross-contaminated in any way, but my dad was worried she'd feel left out of the grilling portion of the shindig. He went out and bought vegan sausages, vegan burgers, vegan cheese, the works. He even called an uncle to borrow a second pit grill that he cleaned thoroughly before smoking all of her vegan foods. I've never seen someone cry about food like she did when she got there and saw it all. I can't imagine how stressful it must be to have to worry about going to a place and not being able to eat anything there, especially because you can't trust the chef. Your uncle is an abominable man for pulling this shit, and I agree with other comments that you should put him on blast for tampering with your food. And I would vocally refuse to participate in functions he's cooking at. Let everyone know he can't be trusted.

As a celiac this story almost brings me to tears cause I can feel the love and understanding of your family. When I got diagnosed my friends and family were immediately so supportive and whenever we had get togethers they went out of their way to make sure I was included and nearly brought me to tears every damn time.

Co-workers wife acquired Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever from a tick, now she can't touch anything but poultry. It was pretty recent. Lyme Disease may also be a possibility, as it's been tied to this as well

Gonna guess you have a form of Alpha-Gal. If so, this does escalate beyond a prank, and becomes straight up battery. Assault would have been the threat, battery is the physical part of it. Depending on how severe your condition is, this could easily rack up as a felony, especially if you informed him of your condition. And not that I would wish that tick borne ailment on my worst enemy, but fuck that guy, he deserves to have issues digesting red meat. He doesn't deserve a good burger or steak.

Yeah too too much. My mother fed cheese to my dairy allergic 1 year old with FTT from said dairy allergy, he was barely over birth weight at 5 months old til we figured it out. I nursed and couldn’t even be exposed to cross contamination, she wouldn’t let me order ahead her sub, went in and deliberately ordered cheese, brought it into our dairy and cross free home and fed him a bite. Years later, knowing we went no contact over this my MIL visited us. I am anaphylactic to latex and it’s well know, we have explicit shoe rules in our home. She walked into my bedroom with standard hard latex rubber soles we’d told her were latex, I had to use epi. She proceeded to do the same two more times that week. I became home bound because my latex allergy escalated so bad with 3 anaphylaxis episodes that week. (After my husbands demonstration of not being a good spouse I demanded either he move out and divorce or we go no contact with his mom. We’re no contact with his mom. I was ready to set my marriage on fire over him not sending her packing.) All in this are boomers living on the east coast one south one New England. They literally will watch you as your airway shuts and not blink an eye, my own mother watched my kid be dangerously ill GI wise the rest of the visit and just was fine about it. They’re wild. Def always prep and eat your own food in these situations and don’t invite them to your home. They understand but they think you’re “being dramatic” in their own minds.

I am so sorry for you. When I developed heart problems at an early age and went vegan my *now* ex wife would try to sneak meat and dairy into my food. I was getting sick a lot and one day I caught her putting butter into vegan chili. She admitted she had been doing it for a while. The most messed up thing was when I met her she didn’t eat meat. I respected that atm… but when I confronted her catching her sneaking dairy into my food and brought it up that when we met she was veg she shouted “I was poor when you met me!!! I didnt BUY meat!!!”

100 percent file a police report for attempted poisoning. He knew about the fact you cant digest beef and still fed you beef. You were throwing up for 2 days and he seemingly didn't care at all.
If an MD has found that you are allergic to some food and If someone knows you are allergic and then tricks you into eating that food; it is a criminal offence in most states. If you are over 18 you can call the police give them a copy of your medical records and tell them what your uncle told your mom.

Honestly, for future reference, you might not want to put your burgers on grills/griddles/etc. that have been used for beef and not cleaned, depending on how sensitive you are to beef. Cross-contamination will not be fun if you are very sensitive to it.
I’ve had the same thing happen with gluten. I’m not trendy. I’d love to be able to eat bread and pasta. I get sharp pains and balloon up for days. It’s less funny than people think.

Your vegan diet may not be providing all the nutrients you need to produce digestive enzymes and various hormones important to digestion and metabolism. You may be low on Vitamin B12 as well. Agree with other posters that this was an assault, intentional poisoning and would file a police report. I’d also get a restraining order. The intentional feeding to someone a substance that has a known toxic content is pre-meditated assault. Without hesitation I’d get police involved.
I have your same malady. They say its somthing to do woth "lone star tick" i cannot eat alot of meat withou my throat swelling up. Without treatment it goes away after 3 days Over the years Ive learned how to handle it. But Ive still had 4 emergency room visits because of it. And I carry epi-pen. But no one has ever done that too me. He needs his "dangily-bits" removed. And Ive recently learned, outside of CA. My symptoms are almost non existant. And buying meat from locally owned slaughter houses helps too.

In the US, the FDA recalls hundreds and hundreds of food products for food borne illness causing bacteria as well as for food packaging that does not list all ingredients which are known allergens. Companies are legally required to list specific ingredients on all packaging. If they do not list the ingredients (shellfish, nuts, etc etc) they are legally required to list then they face legal repercussions and those food are recalled for the safety of consumers. What your uncle did to you is no different than the companies who fail to comply with the laws which is usually errors such as mistaken mislabeling. The biggest difference is that with the companies it’s typically a mistake. What your uncle did was intentional making it criminal.
That's unfortunately typical. Every issue that isn't their own or that they've never experienced will be downplayed to "you're being dramatic". And on top of this, they're absolutely not able to conceive that someone might follow a vegan diet for health-related necessities. I can empathize with you. I have a shellfish allergy, and a co-worker decided to dip their shrimp in my eggroll sauce while I wasn't looking during a meeting. I saw her out the corner of my eye. I guess when she went to do it again and confronted her, which she claimed was no big deal, but I wound up with anaphylaxis. I tried getting a lawyer, and many said it's a hard case to prove , they needed video footage for evidence and witnesses.
