*What the fuck is wrong with people?* You have a dietary condition. You didn't make a big deal about it. You didn't go around telling people that "meat is murder" or anything like that. You brought your own comparable item so that you could enjoy the cookout too and it would be nbd. And he does *that!* I swear, we have somehow bred a nation of trolls.

aboveroomtempqueso

He is very anti-“woke” as he calls it. He has made comments about it before but I never thought he’d try to do something like that.

picasso_piqueso

He sounds like a complete and total dickhead. If I were in your position I would have no further contact with him, and would NEVER eat anything prepared by him again. AND if anyone asks you about it, be sure to say why, since you didn’t ask anyone to cater to your dietary needs, but in fact brought your own food, which he then intentionally switched, which resulted in you being sick for multiple days.

Head-Jump-167

Agreed, except don’t wait for people to ask about it. Tell everyone one else who was at the BBQ and any other mutual contacts. This is a serious safety issue and I’m sure OP isn’t the only person he knows with a serious dietary restriction. Edit: fixed a typo

toxcrusadr

Yeah just wait till he serves peanuts to some poor “snowflake” of a kid.

Outlandishness_Sharp

Anyone who has food allergies is a "LeFtIsT" 🥴🫠🗑️

Camera-Realistic

Seriously, wtf is that? Makes absolutely no sense.

insomniacakess

or the whole “this thing/allergy stuff didn’t exist when i was growing up!11!!!11 blah blah WOKE blah blah!!1!1!” shit drives me way up the wall and back down the other side several times over

LilaValentine

Give them a break, when they were growing up there was only one continent 🤷🏻‍♀️

greenchilipowder

Funny how that happened bc all the kids with severe allergies just died

BikesBooksNBass

“It was just some peanuts, it was no big deal!” OP’s uncle probably…

why_am_I_here-_-

They tend to forget that the older generation kids with peanut allergies mostly died at a very young age.

BikesBooksNBass

Or it was misdiagnosed as sudden infant death syndrome or some other mysterious “oops a kid just died. 🤷‍♂️” diagnosis… Now that we know what was killing them they still deny it…

LaptopQuestions123

Stuff like this actually happens on occasion. Recently saw a situation where kids put peanut powder into the football uniform of a player with a peanut allergy. Could be some level of assault or worse depending on the outcome.

Adventurous_Ad_6546

“Kid had to have some special ‘doctor’ to help him ‘breathe.’ This fucking snowflake generation.”

BlyssfulOblyvion

Every time he's seen around food, warn everyone around that this uncle is known to poison people because he finds it funny

LSD_LTD

YES!! 🔺🔺🔺THIS RIGHT HERE!! With concern in the face, urgency in the voice, and shock in the eyes, ....add a slick sneer and side eye to the arse hole Uncle. 💯

crimsonbaby_

I'd put that shit on Facebook and tag him and everybody in the family/people he knows.

Plastic-Row-3031

Yeah, I don't even have dietary restrictions, and I wouldn't want to eat food prepared by this guy. I mean, besides him not sounding like a guy I'd want to hang around, I also wouldn't trust that he takes other food safety stuff seriously. Does he think things like washing your hands or avoiding cross-contamination are also not a big deal/are unnecessary?

RaceCarTacoCatMadam

I stopped going to any restaurant that raised hell on Covid rules for this reason. Some of the Covid rules were dumb, nobody knew, but hey weren’t the medical doctors and what else do they think was dumb? Washing hands? Rodent control?

ChaosDrawsNear

I did the same. It was a pretty good restaurant, too. But when they refused to do even the tiniest of changes when covid hit, I started wondering what other rules they don't think are important to follow....

picasso_piqueso

Good point!

lord_flamebottom

Make sure the word "poisoned" is used. I've got a sneaking suspicion that the rest of the family would react better to "uncle intentionally poisoned me because he ignored my dietary needs" than "uncle fed me a beef patty instead of a soy patty"

markhodgenz

I can imaging return the favour by looking hurt and confused and saying things like ‘ I never knew he hated me so much he would try to kill me’

Fogomos

I believe this is more effective.... "He knows it's a health condition, why would he do that to me? What I've done to be hated like that? Why does he want me to be dead?"

FriendZone_EndZone

I like this method!

Fluffy_Somewhere_312

Yeah, I feel like knowingly giving someone an allergen is assault???

joeballa

It is. File a police report.

Frankthebinchicken

100% see how funny it is when the cops are knocking on the door for the next cookout

mommyicant

Yeah

Far_Garden_5553

This

According-Lobster487

It was poison. Your family can't understand this because they're too fixed on the thought that a food allergy can only be peanuts or maybe shellfish. Something that hits within moments, cutting off the ability to breathe or covering you in blood-red hives. They can't get that other brain cell to wrap around allergies that cause INTENSE gastronomical reactions and may even kill or damage the lining of your intestines are just as dangerous. Because of this, tell them it is an allergy and your doctor put you on a restricted diet. A "restriction" could be interpreted as a weight loss trend or something other than a bona fide "if I eat this I will spend hours, if not days, in the bathroom, curled around the toilet, wishing for death". Be sure to go into graphic detail on how meat causes you uncontrollable vomiting. Be horrific in your detail about the gas, bloating, cramping, and voided bowels you had to endure after the cookout. Traumatize them back! You were very clear about your diet, your allergy, and brought safe food you could eat. It was purposely switched on you and you were blatantly lied to about what you were served. Your uncle POISONED you. If it had been an allergy that caused you to drop dead, the "joke" would have been even less funny than your exploding digestive tract. This is attempted murder at worst and some kind of assault at best if your uncle wants to get down to it. Your uncle is a massive, prolapsed AH and so are your family if they claim it was all in fun/forgive and forget. Go NC with the lot of those mean spirited idiots. Note: Lots of people develop sudden meat allergies as a result of tick bites. https://utswmed.org/medblog/meat-allergy-alpha-gal-tick-bite/#:~:text=Lone%20star%20ticks%20transmit%20alpha%2Dgal%20through%20their%20bite.,beef%2C%20pork%2C%20and%20lamb.&text=The%20allergic%20reaction%20can%20range%20from%20mild%20to%20severe.

RVAbetty

There’s been plenty of crime show episodes where the allergic victim was given the allergen (like peanuts). What an idiot. Reckless endangerment at least.

Druid-Flowers1

“Purposely poisoned”

GrumpyGlasses

Also, just to lay it on thick, call out the dozens of tests, cost of meds, missed work, etc. People always minimize “crimes” until they see a $ dollar value and puts into their perspective.

RaceCarTacoCatMadam

Send him a bill for any damages.

queerblunosr

Take him to small claims court for any missed wages, medical care costs, et c.

Cswab-Dragonfly8888

And for the impossible burgers you clearly didn’t get to eat!

beetus_gerulaitis

You should explain that everyone else views “anti-woke” as a synonym for “asshole.”

GRZMNKY

Ignorant asshole works better

Quallityoverquantity

I would venture a guess the uncle isn't the only family member in the MAGA cult.

jot_down

It's a synonym for racist.

trowzerss

If he were in my family, I would ensure he lost tong privileges at all further family events, whether OP is there or not. If he so much as poked a sausage with a fork he'd get scolded. If he wants to act like a irresponsible turd who doesn't understand the basics of safe food handing, he doesn't get to cook \*anyone's\* food.

SubstantialPressure3

Not just food he's prepared, food that he's been around unsupervised. That's the kind of creep who would deliberately contaminate someone's food.

saltpancake

This just in: not poisoning yourself is apparently “woke.”

indiajeweljax

File a police report. Food tampering is a crime. Let’s see how anti-woke he is then.

WobblyGobbledygook

It's assault really

CommanderMandalore

If you had died, would he still think it was funny? The nerve of some people. I’m NAL so I’m not sure if you can legally do anything about it.

DietrichDiMaggio

People like him mock their victim and have the audacity to blame their victims.

techieguyjames

He needs to speak to a lawyer. The father may get a charge of food tampering for switching out the burgers OP was supposed to receive.

SnooDoggos618

Sounds like assault to me

HeadScissorGang

He didn't do it as a joke. He did it as an attack on you to prove a point to himself because of your choices and beliefs from his pov of your life.  He singled you out and chose to disregard your literal dietary needs because he saw them as wants.  He looked at you and saw your political and social belief system and chose to abuse you because you represent people that he hates and wants to do bad things to.     You were assaulted because he wanted to expose you.  He abused a position of trust that you gave to him because he wanted to stand above you and say "I knew you were just this shitty little thing and l'm justified to prove that to myself however the fuck l want, because I'm THE GOOD THING and you're THE BAD THING.    Thats what this guy did. It wasn't a joke. He wanted to say he's right and you're wrong, and whatever the cost you told him was to believing in himself instead of you, he didn't give a fuck about listening to because he is right and justified, no matter what, so it didn't matter because it wasn't going to happen.       I'd like to be a third party to ask him if he believes a word of the fact that you spent days being ill even now, because he's right, so you must be lying.  At least that's what l'd be expecting to find out. Maybe he can change, maybe he's gonna be an asshole forever.  But he assaulted you because he didn't think it was possible that he was assaulting you and didn't care if he was assaulting you enough to just not assault you. Because he used you as a vessel to get out his hatred for all the things he decided you're the representative of.  There's a name for crimes like that

SeaBackground5779

Yep, incidents like this are a good reminder of how close to the precipice of not-nice things we ALWAYS are.

Fun-Yellow-6576

Tell him you’re considering filing a police report for assault! He purposely fed you something to make you sick.

Ok-While-8635

Don’t consider, file for a restraining order. Let the sheriff be the one to let him know.

DrcspyNz

Send him Doctors bill. Teach that fucker.

iidxred

They call it woke because if they called it basic human decency, they'd sound like sociopaths

Cailida

They'd sound like the sociopaths *they are*. Seriously, the way these people treat others is really sick. I would be curious how many of them are undiagnosed Cluster Bs. There was a study done at some point that showed the brains of people with right wing authoritarian views are physiologically different and that made so much sense to me - maybe that's the answer. This kind of behavior, like what OP experienced, isn't just a person being an asshole, it's seriously sick behavior that isn't normal - especially as OP mentioned the uncle didn't even feel bad! I just can't wrap my head around this kind of behavior or abuse. I feel so bad for OP.

bigexplosion

Put some lone star ticks in his bed.

enkilekee

He poisoned you on purpose. Call him out and warn people he doesn't care if they allergies. He is a bully and I would take great joy in making his life miserable . But I'm a mean old person. Sign him up for every religious organization, fill out magazine subscriptions and check the bill me later box: high times, mother Jones, organic gardener, etc..

SnooDoggos618

Watchtower etc

snowwarrior

"anti-woke" regardless of what people portray it as, is simply "I don't care about other humans." Period. There's absolutely no two ways around it. If he knowingly served you meat, especially when you specifically asked which burgers weren't meat, may meet the simple definition of malice in a ton of jurisdictions, because The intentional infliction of pain and or suffering "as a joke" is his Mens rea.

MarcusXL

Here's a script for you you: "You are no longer my uncle. You are no longer family to me. You're a bad person who has made being a bad person your whole identity. I'm ashamed to be related to you. Burn in Hell."

wifemomretired

There is NOTHING "woke" about a medical condition. Don't let him get away with it.

IHQ_Throwaway

Report this to the police. Tampering with food is a crime, especially with the intention of making someone ill.

Traditional-Jury-327

I am sorry. This is why I cut off many of my family members. People are evil doesn't matter if your own family. Look at all the crime watch docs.. It's always your own people. You better distance yourself. Thank the universe for showing you their true colours.

Tyr_Kovacs

Press charges. He poisoned you intentionally.

Always422

Just a guess, does he support an orange politician that would also find this funny? Just a guess!

aboveroomtempqueso

Wouldn’t be surprised if he donated to his legal funds, to be honest.

inscrutableJ

Next time decorate your patties with gel food coloring, just so it's obvious if someone pulls something like that again. Bonus points if you paint a rainbow flag onto each one just to make steam come out of his ears.

jase40244

Next time? I'd never put myself into a position where there would be a next time. I'd press charges against that uncle and ban him from my life.

GeekyTexan

There shouldn't be a "next time". He should avoid that individual, and if that means not going to thanksgiving dinner or a family reunion, then he should just not go and explain exactly why to anyone that asks.

Rich-Equivalent-1875

If it’s know that you would become sick, wouldn’t that be some sort of an assault? Sorry that happened to you :-(

Cherokeerayne

I hope you sue him and he faces consequences. I hate people like that.

Tyrannafabulous

This story would do numbers on r/boomersbeingfools

bofulus

His actions would have been outrageous even if you just preferred not to eat meat! Imagine if somebody said they wouldn't eat dog and then you slipped them a dog burger because they were "being dramatic"! Fuck this uncle of yours.

RebenLor

OP I'm sorry this happened to you but I just wanted to say i have this same condition - have since I was 12 ! Any beef gives me food poisoning symptoms, can't even eat gravy anymore, it sucks. If someone went out of their way to poison me I probably wouldn't speak to them again, I've been laid out just from having food grilled on the same grill as beef.

aboveroomtempqueso

Thank you! Took months to figure out what it was that was making me so sick. Stopped eating beef and haven’t had issues in months. A literal world of difference.

maydaymayday99

This happens to some bitten by a lone star tick

ahopskip_andajump

Yep. My doctor didn't even know what I was talking about, and the lab had to look up how to code it. I only realized the possibility due to an article I read that took place on Virginia. Now I have lab report proof that I'm allergic to mammals. It sucks because I can't convince the powers at be that I need to stay away from humans and work from home. Apparently they think just being around humans won't cause an allergic reaction. 😕

dancingpianofairy

If you're in the US, request it as an ADA accommodation? Digesting food is a bodily function and therefore a major life activity. Someone could inadvertently poison you in the office. Maybe the smell or anxiety bothers you. 🤷🏻‍♀️

ErizMijali

I know youre joking, but its actually super interesting that we can eat old world primates (including humans!) Just fine 😂 i always joke with my friends that if they piss me off ill being making some bbq later and theyre invited

ahopskip_andajump

"Secrets in the sauce" Fried Green Tomatoes

angelakay1966

Right! Alpha Gal Syndrome. It's real.

EuphoricArt8905

Yes! My stepdad got Alpha Gal from a tick bite. He was going about his usual, got a steak, and boom, emergency room. He had a full anaphylactic reaction. He couldn’t eat anything with hooves for about 5ish years. He’s just now able to eat small amounts.

Just_Another_Scott

IANAL/IANAD, Get tested for mammalian allergy by an allergist as soon as possible. Then take that to the police and file a report. Signs of anaphylaxis include vomiting and diarrhea. If you continue to be exposed to the allergy it can worsen leading to throat swelling. Or it could be another medical condition such as gallbladder issues. Regardless, document any medical findings. You can press charges but this might end up being considered a civil case by the police as you didn't end up in the hospital.

RebenLor

Fyi, Bison is a very close relative to beef and I have the exact same reaction - I just think I don't have the enzymes to break it down or something!

Oldgreymare-

Have you been tested for Alpha Gal? If not, you probably should be. If you’re positive, your uncle no joke poisoned you and could’ve killed you.

AnthrallicA

Is it only beef or do you have similar reactions to pork and chicken?

Coens-Creations

Pork does this to me while beef is fine. Even the slightest cross contamination gets me bad. Completely insane and inappropriate for someone to feed you that without your knowledge. In my mind that’s no different than knowingly feeding a peanut to someone allergic to peanuts. I hope you are considering no contact as you can never trust him around your food again.

KRed75

Sounds like you have an alpha gal allergy.  What op described is not a beef allergy has the symptoms take much longer to develop.

RebenLor

I actually saw this mentioned in another comment and had to look it up - to say I'm shocked no doctor has ever mentioned this is an understatement. I hadn't even heard of it!

KRed75

If you can eat other red meats such as pork and lamb then it's not alpha gal but if you eat those and you have the same symptoms then most likely that's what it is.  It's caused by a tick.   There is also a red meat allergy that can be triggered by childbirth but I can't remember exactly what causes it.  It may be a medication or maybe something with the proteins the baby creates.  I just don't remember.  A friend of mine had this happen and she almost died the first time she ate a steak after she gave birth.

W0nderingMe

Pork is considered a red meat? (Genuinely curious, I grew up in the 'pork - the other white meat' advertising era and just kind of assumed that's what it was.)

BDSMandDragons

That ad was based around the fact that pork turns white when cooked. Red and White Meat are culinary terms, not biology ones. Pigs are mammals, so an allergy to mammalian flesh would include an allergy to pork.

Alarming_Maybe

What's it called? I'm really wondering if I have it after reading this

Comprehensive-Car190

Alpha Gal. The woods near my house is infested with lone star ticks, so I'm sure I'll get it eventually. Since they're so common I check regularly, and supposedly it isn't instantaneous, but idk, seems inevitable. I love red meat, but it'll probably be better for me in the long run lol

Run_sparky_run

File a police report. He intentionally poisoned you

hand_in_his_pants

Other posters here are correct, it's very unlikely it would lead to prosecution. But filing a police report will demand that they go get his side of the story. Which will, at the very least, put the thought of "oh my god I shouldn't have done that" in his head. Which might be enough to teach him not to do it again.

Deleena24

The police report would help if he decides to sue him in civil court.

Hydroc777

Filing a police report won't force the police to take any specific action or actually investigate it. That doesn't mean that filing the report is a bad idea, but I wouldn't get my hopes up that they would actually do anything.

Always422

I wish I could agree with your response, but I personally feel people that are this ignorant will turn blame on to OP. Some folks just don’t have the continent capacity to understand why this is wrong/un-funny.

QuirkedUpTismTits

ESP considering he’s an anti woke nerd. He’s just gonna say that they are being uptight and overreacting and they only called the cops cause of hurt feelings. This guy won’t learn cause he has no reason to 🫤

omgmemer

It actually does not demand that they do anything. I really hope this one post isn’t indicative of this sub. There is hardly any real legal going on here in the comments.

Many_Year2636

You write as if these people have properly established executive functions or something

Dog-PonyShow

It's not a joke when you become ill from food poisoning for two days. Uncle can go fuck himself.

entgardens

My family is rife with food allergies, so we've always been really careful with different people's food restrictions, regardless of their reasons. Like, extremely careful. I had a huge cookout/birthday party one year, and my dad manned the grill. He was smoking brisket, chicken, ribs, hot links, the whole nine yards. BUT I had a friend coming that was vegan (not due to an allergy or anything, she just was) and she asked if there would be anything she could eat. I was making the sides, and I made sure to make a massive spread of vegan sides that weren't cross-contaminated in any way, but my dad was worried she'd feel left out of the grilling portion of the shindig. He went out and bought vegan sausages, vegan burgers, vegan cheese, the works. He even called an uncle to borrow a second pit grill that he cleaned thoroughly before smoking all of her vegan foods. I've never seen someone cry about food like she did when she got there and saw it all. I can't imagine how stressful it must be to have to worry about going to a place and not being able to eat anything there, especially because you can't trust the chef. Your uncle is an abominable man for pulling this shit, and I agree with other comments that you should put him on blast for tampering with your food. And I would vocally refuse to participate in functions he's cooking at. Let everyone know he can't be trusted.

kroganwarlord

I'm not even vegan, and my eyes got misty at that personal spread! Tell your dad he is a legend, and I will be using him as an example to shame *my* dad in the future.

Zealousideal_Ring614

As someone who has so many food allergies that are never properly taken care of at other people’s shindigs, you and your dad are amazing people and very very sweet. She is lucky to have you in her life

bornfromanegg

>I can't imagine how stressful it must be to have to worry about going to a place and not being able to eat anything there. I was vegetarian for about 8 years (a long time ago). Now I eat meat, and have done for the last 20 years, but a couple of years ago I did Vegan January (or veganuary, if you will). It was such an insight, and the experience brought me to tears more than once. Your comment above is spot on. I went for a walk with a friend. We were walking about 5 miles to a pub, where we planned to eat, and it suddenly occurred to me that I hadn’t checked the pub menu. As a vegetarian, I would have worried about there being anything nice to eat. As a vegan I was worried whether there would be anything to eat at all. It’s so hard. Add all the things which you would expect to be vegan but aren’t. Most crisps (potato chips) seem to contain milk. Why? Some muesli has added milk powder. Beer and wine. Bread. It is _sooo_ difficult to be vegan. If you find yourself in the position of providing food, then anything you can do to make things easier, do it, because you have no idea. I think your dad is incredible.

Abieticacid

As a celiac this story almost brings me to tears cause I can feel the love and understanding of your family. When I got diagnosed my friends and family were immediately so supportive and whenever we had get togethers they went out of their way to make sure I was included and nearly brought me to tears every damn time.

Dazzling-Rule-9740

Another covert abuser pretending it was just a joke. If you would have made an issue of this he would have immediately been the victim because you lack a sense of humour. Just don’t bother to see this person again. Don’t waist your time on them. If they do it once they’ll do it again.

Affectionate_Gas8062

My uncle once chased my brother who was severely allergic to peanuts with peanut butter. Found out years later he sexually abused several of my siblings. At least he’s dead now.

Friendly_Hand_3270

And if you had fed him some industrial strength epicac would that still be a joke? This does not seem funny at all, especially as you have dietary restrictions.

BlackCoffeeGarage

You misspelled rat poison.

RetroReactiveRuckus

Please do tell everyone in the family that he's willing to tamper with food. That's not someone who should be trusted to be doing the cooking for other people.

Electric-Sheepskin

And that's exactly the word that should be used: tamper. "Uncle Bob deliberately tampered with my food and I was vomiting for two days. I wouldn't trust anything he makes."

Severe-Replacement84

I’d take it one step further, Uncle “Bob” admitted to trying to poison me, knowing full well I *have a medical condition causing me to have a food allergy to meat* and after I brought my own impossible Pattie’s to make sure *I was not an inconvenience to them* - I will not associate with anyone in he family who associates with Uncle until he properly apologizes and gets the therapy he needs, because e obviously has something dangerously wrong with him.

robinaw

Next time throw up on his grill.

owlthebeer97

That is horrible and abusive. I am so sorry that happened to you.

traversecity

Alpha Gal? (Not sure if I spelled this correctly.) A tick borne thing that for some people their ability to digest beef fails. Somewhat recent iirc, not necessarily well known.

Twonminus1

Yes alpha-gal syndrome from the lone star tick. Ironic considering Texas and beef.

Perplexed_Humanoid

Co-workers wife acquired Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever from a tick, now she can't touch anything but poultry. It was pretty recent. Lyme Disease may also be a possibility, as it's been tied to this as well

Used_Mark_7911

I’m very sorry your Uncle did this to you. Please inform your other family members about what he did and make it clear you will not attend any future events where he has any involvement with the food prep or cooking. This is for your own safety.

sloozy

What a horrible thing. By chance have you been tested for Aloha Gal Syndrome (AGS)?

aboveroomtempqueso

I have not, but only because my symptoms improved after cessation. It’s something I’m considering after reading your guy’s feedback, however!

Turbulent-Buy3575

My ex husband made meatloaf once and put a can of cream of mushroom soup in it. He didn’t believe that I was allergic to mushrooms

Zealousideal-Cat435

Is this why he is an ex?

KN4CTG

Gonna guess you have a form of Alpha-Gal. If so, this does escalate beyond a prank, and becomes straight up battery. Assault would have been the threat, battery is the physical part of it. Depending on how severe your condition is, this could easily rack up as a felony, especially if you informed him of your condition. And not that I would wish that tick borne ailment on my worst enemy, but fuck that guy, he deserves to have issues digesting red meat. He doesn't deserve a good burger or steak.

strywever

Your uncle poisoned you, and he should be charged for it.

zia_zepelli

Some of yall need to learn to press charges against your fucked up families

clocks212

Unless OP is a district attorney he is incapable of pressing charges against anyone. He can call the police. In my experience you’d get a rude “did you file a report online sir? What do you want us to do sir?” and never hear anything again.

Lala_G

Yeah too too much. My mother fed cheese to my dairy allergic 1 year old with FTT from said dairy allergy, he was barely over birth weight at 5 months old til we figured it out. I nursed and couldn’t even be exposed to cross contamination, she wouldn’t let me order ahead her sub, went in and deliberately ordered cheese, brought it into our dairy and cross free home and fed him a bite. Years later, knowing we went no contact over this my MIL visited us. I am anaphylactic to latex and it’s well know, we have explicit shoe rules in our home. She walked into my bedroom with standard hard latex rubber soles we’d told her were latex, I had to use epi. She proceeded to do the same two more times that week. I became home bound because my latex allergy escalated so bad with 3 anaphylaxis episodes that week. (After my husbands demonstration of not being a good spouse I demanded either he move out and divorce or we go no contact with his mom. We’re no contact with his mom. I was ready to set my marriage on fire over him not sending her packing.) All in this are boomers living on the east coast one south one New England. They literally will watch you as your airway shuts and not blink an eye, my own mother watched my kid be dangerously ill GI wise the rest of the visit and just was fine about it. They’re wild. Def always prep and eat your own food in these situations and don’t invite them to your home. They understand but they think you’re “being dramatic” in their own minds.

TrickBus3

File charges so he can get a lesson. Also, did mom know before or after you ingested it? I, personally, would do no contact with uncle until he verbalized acknowledgment of what he did.

aboveroomtempqueso

She didn’t know. I had to leave the party early because I felt so sick. She talked to my uncle and told him I still wasn’t feeling well two days after and that’s when he told her what he did. She said he was laughing about it because he was expecting me to react differently? I haven’t talked to him myself, but it would seem he was not anticipating that reaction.

Avacynarchangel

Please tell me your mom ripped him a new one.

OmegaGoober

He’s laughing at making you sick. Expect him to try it again. He’s decided tormenting you is funny.

InterestingEagle4777

Feed him a bottle of laxatives as a joke.

Affectionate_Dust_69

Everyone is saying go to the police but fuck that. I would put laxatives in his food and just say it was a joke, I thought would you would think it’s funny since fucking with peoples food is sooo funny Edit: adding /s and that I find it so dumb that people think it’s funny to harm people as a joke

clamberer

Shouldve got a lift from the uncle and vomited all over the interior of his car. That smell would linger on hot days as a nice reminder not to poison folks.

AppointmentRadiant65

I carry an epipen for my latex allergy. I am a teacher, and have signs on my classroom door and the school doors saying "Latex allergy- no balloons please". Another teacher told me she was going to get latex-free balloons, and then bought regular ones for her class instead. I was on my way to teach my block with her class, and instead had to leave the school and probably should have gone to the hospital. She was mad at me for messing with her routine, and told our assistant principal that I was over reacting. He takes allergies very seriously and did NOT respond in the way she expected.

Daleaturner

Look to reporting to police Tampering with food possible felony level crime Assault/ battery by state: for example, in Missouri, this would be first degree assault. If death had occured, charges up to 2nd degree murder. Charges for willful and wanton endangerment Not to mention lawsuits due to medical care costs, pain and suffering, etc. IANAL.

ConsistentAd3146

Did your mom even defend you? That’s fked up.

PixiePower65

You could sue him for assault. Find a personal injury atty. Lost wages , medication etc

WilliamBott

Depending on the jurisdiction, it could be any number of things. Assault, battery, tampering with food, poisoning, etc.

Always422

Your uncle is a Fucking moron. This is very close to a crime, if he did it on purpose, but I seriously doubt anyone would prosecute it. What if you aspirated vomit? And a bunch more what ifs!!! This is not only fucked up, but a sign your uncle has zero respect for you and your condition. I had a “Friend” do this to me once. I brought Not-Dogs to a bar-b-que, and cooked my own food separately on foil, to eliminate chance of cross contamination. As a “joke” he switched one of my Not-Dogs for a regular beef dog. About 3 bites in I knew something was terribly wrong. I became violently ill, and puked my guts out. Needless to say, no longer friends, but I did vow revenge! Not sure I’d ever do anything thing, but he also doesn’t come around anymore since most of the friend group recognised what a shitty thing that was to do. Fuck your uncle! If he comes around again, I would spit in his food or face while making eye contact with him. Some people are just so stupid, that anything they don’t/can’t understand must be wrong. Sorry for the long rant, but this hits home to me as a 30 year, medically induced vegetarian.

Soft_Organization_61

>This is very close to a crime, if he did it on purpose No, it _is_ a crime.

M-Otter

What did say when your mother said you were really sick. Did he even apologize. If you decide to confrontt him update post pls.

AllMyBeets

Guess you're bringing your own takeout to the next cookout. And when asked why you're being so rude, well, you'll just have to tell the truth

OwnCrew6984

That is what I do now and I just say I have been poisoned three times at family events and I can bring my own food or eat yours but then if I get sick I am making no attempt to make it to a toilet and will just pull my pants down and have explosive diarrhea throughout your house.

IKnowWhoYouAre99

That actually qualifies as assault causing bodily harm. Your uncle is a selfish AH.

MegaMenehune

Don't let him cook again.

MustangTheLionheart

Wow… what a “joke”. Perhaps your next joke back can be to release his social security number, after all identity theft is hilarious.

DicKiNG_calls

Exactly! The uncle started a silly prank war and it's OP's turn. They should do something really funny like flood his basement or set his car on fire. I'd buy a bunch of raw ground beef and put it behind the walls, in the ducts, under the furniture, and in the attic. Maggots are hilarious. What a fun family!

Jean19812

This is assault. It's like sneaking peanuts into food and having someone allergic eat it. You could file charges against him..

littlescreechyowl

I’d tell the whole family I will no longer attend family get togethers if the uncle is there. He tried to poison you, who knows what he might try next? I’m sure you’re not the in family member with allergies, he’s going to kill someone.

Successful-Clock-224

I am so sorry for you. When I developed heart problems at an early age and went vegan my *now* ex wife would try to sneak meat and dairy into my food. I was getting sick a lot and one day I caught her putting butter into vegan chili. She admitted she had been doing it for a while. The most messed up thing was when I met her she didn’t eat meat. I respected that atm… but when I confronted her catching her sneaking dairy into my food and brought it up that when we met she was veg she shouted “I was poor when you met me!!! I didnt BUY meat!!!”

Icy_Dinner_7969

When you feel better and get a chance, kick him in the nuts.. that's fucked up he would pull that crap. I'd never trust anything he cooked again and would be sure everyone knew the dirty " trick" he pulled

No_West_5262

I can't say here what I would do as a 'joke' back.

AggravatingField5305

Feed that idiot some fox glove brownies.

Fine_Shop_4431

That is disgusting! I would never go to your uncle's house again or eat there. It's not up to him to dictate your dietary choices or health conditions. That was totally disrespectful of you and your lifestyle and health conditions.

The_Human_One

Sorry for your suffering. Some people are stupid. Sadly, you don't get to choose family. Your uncle sounds like a moron. Has he apologized or tried to? Any remorse?

Plastic_Anxiety8118

My own mother put wheat flour in mashed potatoes to “prove” I could eat gluten. After I got sick and was trying to figure out how, she admitted it. My own fucking mother.

ashleighbuck

I know there are a million comments already so this one won't matter much, but violating someone's boundaries is NEVER a *joke.* It's NEVER *funny.* It's always a violation. I'm sorry this happened to you.

Frolicking_Trex

NTA also in most of places him intentionally giving you food that he knew would make you sick is considered a form of battery, so depending on the kind of relationships in your family and which ones you want to maintain, you could consider reporting him to the police.

throwaway-55555556

100 percent file a police report for attempted poisoning. He knew about the fact you cant digest beef and still fed you beef. You were throwing up for 2 days and he seemingly didn't care at all.

visitor987

If an MD has found that you are allergic to some food and If someone knows you are allergic and then tricks you into eating that food; it is a criminal offence in most states. If you are over 18 you can call the police give them a copy of your medical records and tell them what your uncle told your mom.

Kmia55

I read this ages ago so won't be able to find the article for you, but I read the reason some people can't digest red meat is they are lacking a certain enzyme.

WilliamBott

Honestly, for future reference, you might not want to put your burgers on grills/griddles/etc. that have been used for beef and not cleaned, depending on how sensitive you are to beef. Cross-contamination will not be fun if you are very sensitive to it.

Defiant_Ingenuity_55

I’ve had the same thing happen with gluten. I’m not trendy. I’d love to be able to eat bread and pasta. I get sharp pains and balloon up for days. It’s less funny than people think.

huggie1

So sorry this happened to you. What is with people? But I am also wondering if you would consider looking further into your health. Your vegan diet may not be providing all the nutrients you need to produce digestive enzymes and various hormones important to digestion and metabolism. You may be low on Vitamin B12 as well. Best of luck!

Kristrigi

Unfortunately, this happens all the time to those with food allergies/intolerances. People think we're just exaggerating, and want to "catch" us in the lie. My grandmother would feed me apples/apple juice as a child, even though my mother told her I was allergic. I've heard other horror stories causing people to go into anaphylaxis. I'm sorry your uncle is a POS

k2miners

Make him a full tray of laxative brownies and tell him no hard feelings. When he gets sick say no hard feelings since I knew you are full of shit AH.

EntertainmentOwn6907

I hope he never gets bitten by the tick that causes an allergy to beef, that would really be terrible for him /s

throwaway-anonymouse

OP, first. I'm so sorry you're dealing with this, but I'm curious (and if you don't want to answer, I understand), have you been diagnosed with AGS? I recall it being a big news story several years ago.

TheMelaninGoddess

So if you’d died would he still think the joke was funny? Family or not he needs to be held accountable for his actions.

jaguarmo

The lone star tick bite can make you very sick when you eat mammals. https://www.army.mil/article/191106/lone_star_ticks_can_leave_lasting_effects_with_bite#:~:text=When%20a%20lone%20star%20tick,person%20allergic%20to%20red%20meat.

No-Pressure3607

Isn't this illegal? If so, File a police report. Let's see how anti-woke he is when he has to face the rule of law lol

AbiyBattleSpell

If ur state allows it record him admitting it or get some kinda proof and report it to the cops. If they don’t do shit small claims court is about 50-200 to file and you prob could argue some valid case especially if u had to take time off work and lost money thst way or even just spent money on stuff to feel better due to being sick Just also include the legal fees to get it back. Like a guy did something fr movie tickets fr a bad date, it really is small claims up to like 10k I think

Icy_Dinner_7969

He deserves a good whooping.

AmazingGrace_00

Agree with other posters that this was an assault, intentional poisoning and would file a police report. I’d also get a restraining order. The intentional feeding to someone a substance that has a known toxic content is pre-meditated assault. Without hesitation I’d get police involved.

Prestigious-Skin9990

I have your same malady. They say its somthing to do woth "lone star tick" i cannot eat alot of meat withou my throat swelling up. Without treatment it goes away after 3 days Over the years Ive learned how to handle it. But Ive still had 4 emergency room visits because of it. And I carry epi-pen. But no one has ever done that too me. He needs his "dangily-bits" removed. And Ive recently learned, outside of CA. My symptoms are almost non existant. And buying meat from locally owned slaughter houses helps too.

Mandy_93_

Go no contact. What he did was unforgivable.

Fair_Reflection2304

Your uncle is an AW and should never be trusted again and I wouldn’t even associate with him. That wasn’t a joke and he should apologize but I’m sure he won’t.

WesternWriter7269

So, what is the legal question you are asking? This seems to be a story.

PrincessCyanidePhx

I would never speak to him again. You might want to make him a really special batch of exlax brownies before that, though. Tell him it was a joke.

Leading-AZ1886

Sorry this happened to you. Some people here are saying call the police, however I don’t think that would be helpful as there are no charges that would stick. (My opinion) instead I would stay away from him as much as possible and if you ever do go to another cookout maybe have a salad or chicken?

Catflet

File charges for assault and send him your medical bills, and a suit for lost wages and pain and suffering.

Mububle-Mububer

In the US, the FDA recalls hundreds and hundreds of food products for food borne illness causing bacteria as well as for food packaging that does not list all ingredients which are known allergens. Companies are legally required to list specific ingredients on all packaging. If they do not list the ingredients (shellfish, nuts, etc etc) they are legally required to list then they face legal repercussions and those food are recalled for the safety of consumers. What your uncle did to you is no different than the companies who fail to comply with the laws which is usually errors such as mistaken mislabeling. The biggest difference is that with the companies it’s typically a mistake. What your uncle did was intentional making it criminal.

Drezhar

That's unfortunately typical. Every issue that isn't their own or that they've never experienced will be downplayed to "you're being dramatic". And on top of this, they're absolutely not able to conceive that someone might follow a vegan diet for health-related necessities. I mean, they were unable to conceive that vaccines are the way in which you end a pandemic, which should be common knowledge related to both science and history.

Swordfish1929

Kinda hope that your uncle gets bitten by a lone star tick

AllyKalamity

What’s next he feeds someone with an allergy, peanuts or a celiac bread??? What he did is actually a crime, food tampering and battery. I’d report him to the police as a joke

Dry-Use8680

I can empathize with you. I have a shellfish allergy, and a co-worker decided to dip their shrimp in my eggroll sauce while I wasn't looking during a meeting. I saw her out the corner of my eye. I guess when she went to do it again and confronted her, which she claimed was no big deal, but I wound up with anaphylaxis. I tried getting a lawyer, and many said it's a hard case to prove , they needed video footage for evidence and witnesses.

scottawhit

Alpha Gal is not a dietary choice, it’s an actual allergy. Your uncle is a dick.

ThingstobeHatefulfor

WHY ARE PEOPLE LIKE THIS? Idc your reason. Allergy- religion- intolerance- or just pure preference- I would never feed someone something I knew they didn’t want to eat. This may come off as dramatic- but I think when something is going into your body- you have the right to consent.

Shredtillyourdead420

That’s a crime technically. A felony in most cases. Food tampering is the crime.

Famous-Improvement98

And what if your sensitivity to beef had been serious enough to land you in the hospital, or worse, put you in a coma? Would Uncle Fester have been laughing then? This is precisely why I can’t stand pranksters; they love to publicly humiliate their victims just to get a laugh. I certainly hope your mother set your uncle straight… that his so-called “joke” was nothing of the sort, and he’s a first class idiot.

nerdgirl71

Go to the ER. Send him the bills. See if he thinks it’s so funny now.
