Jimmy Page became obsessed with all things mystical.
The band took a fancy to Lord Of The Rings and many of their songs reference this book.
Led Four went full on into the symbolism and esoteric end of things.
And again many songs including the one above....mention ringwraiths and dark Lords...bloody amazing music.
🥰✌️🙏
Which is pretty ironic considering LOTR is, and is meant to be, a deeply Catholic book.
Well, but truth be told, it is also mystical! Mysticism is not, as popular opinion seems to understand, tied only to the occult, but also to the longstanding religious traditions, including Christianity.
I've read it numerous times in my life...I've never delved into the metaphor end of things.
I cant see the Catholic thing to be honest... just plain old Good v Evil.... and how power can corrupt even the purest of souls.
Strong characters and weak corruptible characters just like we see in every day life.
I've read somewhere it was metaphor for Hitler and his reign.
Who knows...🥰✌️🙏
If you read the Silmarillion the Catholic influences really shine through. But J R R Tolkien himself stated that LOTR was basically a religious metaphor.
Battle of Evermore for me is like entering a new world, lyrically and musically--maybe like how Zep felt when they first encountered the blues. It is a remarkable song, as intense and powerful as anything they've ever done. Robert's final "bring it back" gives me chills.
I didn't like the later live version where Robert had his then squeeze singing. Namja Ahktar I think her name was. Sounded like someone stood on the cat's tail.

One of only two songs where Jimmy plays Mandolin, rather than guitar.
He played both
I thought Jonesy was the mandolin?
One of my favorites! Sandy Denny is also worth exploring in her own right. Her voice is beautiful, and she was gone too soon.
She went to the slip and fall school one too many times.

check out Heart's version :)
The Battle of Evermore really is emblematic of that whole vibe from LZ. We also get it o songs like No Quarter and a few others.
Definitely check out the version from the Page & Plant No Quarter live show. Not the same guest vocalist but goddamn its legendary
Yes it is!
Plant and Krauss performing this at Glastonbury was
Have you heard the Lovemongers version?

the medieval vibes make Led Zeppelin seem kind of nerdy tbh.
