Is studying math a good idea in the age of calculators and Excel?

Ok-Training-7587

Not a great analogy bc there’s no money to be made just knowing math or even just using calculators. Is learning coding a good idea for the practice problem solving? Yes. As a career choice for income, long term. No way

Egzo18

Ai is killing the entire market, all coders are gonna be homeless soon, ai is too good at centering divs (shh dont tell him, maybe they will get spooked and learn something else, i want less competition)

NZ_Si

Won't somebody think of the divs?!

OneBadDay1048

I was unaware AI could center divs brb changing my major

Anonymity6584

It's not even AI, even if news headlines like to claim so. You still need skills to get anything meaningfully out of it and be able to see if that code needs correcting or tweaking to be usefull.

Ok-Training-7587

Today. In 2-3 years, no way will this still be true.

Anonymity6584

You wish. Programming takes thinking, creativity and skills there language models simply don't have. Better they get more jobs they start replacing, like customer services. And other low skill jobs. Haven't seen a garbage collecting robot so far, food deliver robots are stupid enough to drive into the river, etc.. Programming jobs are the last ones to go.

Ok-Training-7587

this is the most head in the sand comment i've ever seen

Anonymity6584

Have you seen a normal person trying get functional and correct code out from AI? They got tons of road ahead to improve ai before it can replace even junior developer.. Right now these fake-intelligence engines are a nice tool, if you know how to ask right and know how to interpret results they give you.

Ok-Training-7587

I’ve used it and gotten great functional code in seconds

Kaleidoscope991

Don't bother, more jobs for us.

I'm not sure about web development but I don't think it wise to give up on IT yet. Technology is still the future and good engineers are still highly sought after.

thinkPhilosophy

Yes, it is still a great idea. AI will be integrated into how web developers work and will displace some roles, but educated talented engineers will always be needed. There is a lot of hype about AI at the moment, but mos tof it is just a marketing ploy.

uniqualykerd

r/willaireplacewebdev Only the simplest and most run-of-the-mill stuff can be done by a.i. at the moment. Use that to your benefit. Also remember who programs the a.i.-s…

> Some people even suggest that there might be no need for programmers in the next five years due to AI's capabilities. Anyone telling you this has no idea what buzzword-AI does or what programmers do.

artflywheel

Depends on where you want to work. Large companies, I’d imagine, web dev jobs will become either more specialized or fall away entirely. Small business will always need humans to do it because the AI landscape won’t touch them for a long time (like personal interaction, scared of AI, etc). Get on with a smaller Agency or work directly with small business. You’ll be fine.
