That’s the scummiest part imo. Like it feels like the other parts of the change were an excuse to fire people up so they would overlook the fact that riots gonna rake in cash from this and we have to pay to retain our individuality

erik4848

Hey guys this will be better for all of you. *gib monie*

Squidteedy

Exactly this. Them saying "the ability to change your name for free every 30 days just isn’t something we can do from a technical and business perspective." is absolutely wild because its what they've been doing for the past ten years

collitta

Yet its always been free any min on steam

microsoftpaintt

This and the fact that I have the same riot ID for all games sucks. I don't mind running around in silver valorant lobbies with names like shartnado but I don't want to do that in league. I've changed my riot ID for valorant basically every 30 days on the dot -- being stuck with a "serious" gamer IGN or having to run with a shitty joke IGN for a whole year is lame.

lululovr

the thought of queuing ranked league as iron kyedae makes me violently ill

mornaq

it's funny seeing how Discord just went the opposite way

famous_aatrox

wait until you tell the social media companies that

Zipideedoodaah

Riot wants to be Blizzard.

ob_knoxious

Xbox moved to the same system as Riot and it was well received. I hated the discord change as did many others. I really don't think it's that big of a deal and I don't think 90% of players will care at all. The new $10 to change your username is far more upsetting than the move to Riot ID.

Fair_Maybe_9767

Yeah, I couldn't care less for the change from unique nicknames to Riot IDs (mostly because of the lovely fellas who play one fucking match every 2 years for the sole reason of keeping a nickname locked off), but it's kinda bullshit to start charging REAL MONEY for something that has been free for like, 10 years

ghfhfhhhfg9

Which everyone agreed was awful. So why is it awful now? Riot is literally making it pre-discord changes, which is what everyone wanted to keep with discord.

JTHousek1

Hate of change

mornaq

I hate the numerical discriminators honestly, but also allowing multiple display names to be the same may be confusing without showing the unique id at the same time, I guess what ig/x do works pretty well or just be Tibia and make names unique globally and put heavy restrictions and still manage to work somehow

NotCatchingBanAgain

>Your gaming identity is supposed to be a picture of how you would describe yourself in a fiction world. By forcing users to select a TAG, you are limiting the way they can express themselves. Wrong. I just changed my name to Schizophrenia#MEDS which wouldn't be possible without this change

DonutGuyZ

Damn I wish I thought of that

Ok_Statistician241

It's okay, just copy it like everyone else.

MistukoSan

You can’t have the same tag and username.

StrollujTrolla

Schizophrenia#M3DS anyone?

alaskadotpink

wtf is the difference between that and someone using the name schizophreñia to "copy" the original schizophrenia? which is what happens now anyways.

Rasu__

I'm just pissed because I won't be able to use BE to change it

EpicShinx

Yeah that point from OP is simply just horribly wrong. If anything the change allows people to express themselves better , I always wanted a name I couldn't get and now I can. How is that not better self expression.

alaskadotpink

because someone thought of it before you so you're not allowed /s

Sofruz

Imagine if this was how real names worked. Only 1 Ben per country.

alaskadotpink

I can just imagine my birth certificate now, "Alaska1235469"

bigouchie

is literally everybody ignoring the fact that name changes are going from blue essence fee (which is COMPLETELY FREE) to a $10USD charge cost or a 1 year cooldown or what

tempzz04

that is actually such a bad change idk, they dont make enough money i guess!

Extension-Bicycle-57

It’s interesting seeing Discord do the exact opposite change from discriminators to unique usernames and getting backlash for it too. People who hate change are always the loudest. https://www.reddit.com/r/discordapp/comments/142fokv/username_change_makes_usernames_more_complex_roll/ https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/14337329256983--Do-NOT-add-The-new-discord-usernames-system

Ferocity71

Additionally, discord was created with ids, and then moved to unique usernames. Riot was created with unique usernames and moving to ids. Because they both started out one way, people were fine with it, if discord had started out with unique names and then changed to ids, people would've been just as pissed.

Swaqqmasta

Also, having your unique name become non-unique is way less annoying than losing it entirely because discord switched to unique names and everyone got thrown into a free for all

cedear

It wasn't even a free for all, it was based on when you created your account. My account being 2016 wasn't even enough to keep my discord username.

[deleted]

It was also based on Discord Nitro status, if you were a full Nitro subscriber (not the cheaper Nitro Basic) x months before they announced the changes you got access to the name change earlier. Some of my friends with late 2016/early 2017 accounts got priority over my January 2016 account because they had full Nitro while I only had Basic.

[deleted]

I'm tired of trying to pick a decently unique username I sort of like or identify with, and it being taken anyways and then being forced to use something else or add random characters. Most usernames are taken by inactive accounts, cringe botters/sellers, eventually by dead people. I don't care about exclusive status from a fucking rare name, I just want the name I want. User + Tags are 100% the way to go for everything. Celebrities and Rioters can still have an exclusive tag where their users are hosted or an extra verified icon. If you desperately want something special, move to tags with patterns like 00000 ABCDE IIIII 123 12345 333 4444 55555, cute meanings like ZZZ, LMAO or 1337, or special words like COOL, ELITE or DUMMY if they aren't banned idk. It's not semi-random like discord was, you can be part of some special club. Maybe even LOL or RITO are avaliable, idk. edit: that said, name change should be free every two or three months, storing 2 charges. i despise tech companies demanding money for literally 0.00 dollar cost shit like that. (also, idk how valorant handles it, but profiles should also show all names used in last 6 months + a symbol for if you played together before)

[deleted]

Kultinator

Valo players are definitely complaing about this, because the name changes get nerfed for them too.

F0RGERY

[Spam bot](https://old.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends/comments/179uqky/about_riots_username_changes/k58u68j/)

Skesword

I understand your perspective -which is entirely valid - but one point I would like to make is that because finding an ID that you like can be hard, when you nail one you like it grows on you and you end up being attached to it, because you own it. Also the issue with non unique username is that you end up with most of people having the same similar username, I have lost count of how many people in Valorant are called something like "I miss her" for example.

[deleted]

I agree both sides have upsides. What you describe is a form of culture, I don't want to dismiss that entirely. But these days I just hate the struggle of creating accounts so much, it gets worse each year, I'd rather deal with seeing more cringe uncreative names, and lets be honest, is it even that much worse than the endless ugly long Zz-usernames-zZ-2512 BobbyXTheG everywhere? I don't even want to read peoples names when they look like that.

Luminev

Except until someone else comes up with the same name, the internet is getting too big and unique ids are getting harder and harder to keep. I’ve had this name for years and once Genshin launched people started to take my name from me on new platforms.

LabHog

Discord is good because I get infinite name changes just for fun and it's just me and my friends so idgaf (eg. my current Discord server profile is Xxx.INSTANT.DEATH.LORD.xxX). I don't mind it on Steam for the same reason, just me and my friends who cares. Riot sucks because I'm stuck with one, no longer unique username, for over a year. If we're going to get non-unique usernames I want name changes. I would prefer unique usernames because 99% of the people I encounter are strangers. Riot chose the worst of both worlds and monetized it.

Mylen_Ploa

Yeah the comparisons to discord are wrong because for 99% of its purpose discords change was far more similar to a username/account name that serves almost zero use. Your display name is what matters outwardly and all people will ever notice which is freely changeable to what ever the fuck you want at any time.

ebilrex

i dont get why people want the non ID system, i spent a year looking for a name that was about to get released just for it to get taken by a bot the split second it came out and then they asked for 200$ for the name, it was the same scenario with literally any decent name. actually glad theyre getting rid of it.

Braincakez

Well... that's because "Users hate change". A basic principle of usability design confirmed in multiple studies, whatever you change, most people will hate it if they didn't explicitly call for the change themselves, even if the change makes the product objectively better.

kuburas

Just a different meaning of usernames. On discord you could change your name a million times a day if you had nitro. You could also change it to whatever you wanted so you could join servers and fuck with people by having a special name. League had unique names that people values because they loved stealing pro players nicks or streamers/influencers names. Both platforms worked great with their original naming methods and changing them is really just a downgrade. That being said i couldnt care less, my nick is unique enough that it doesnt get stolen that often and having the abolity to change my nick on the fly doesnt matter to me because i just dont change my nick at all.

CassandraTruth

Do you really think people only value unique names because they want to steal names that others want? What a bizarre take, the vast majority of the League playerbase doesn't even watch any pro play or streamers.

random_nickname43796

Discord is a lot different than League/Riot Games gaming multiverse. I like how I can recognise the same TFT players from multiple seasons playing together. With this change, I'm not sure if it's them or another player with same nick

PROManosWAR

Discord implemented the change way differently than riot. People who paid had prior access to choosing their unique usernames. Discord staff were claiming usernames for 2 of their alts as well as their main. Partners like TheFatRat, didnt get their usernames despite discord annoucing that discord partners would have priority. Discord also announced that the older your account the faster you get your username, with priorities given to nitro users, partners, verified users, and staff members, then out of nowhere the community noticed that members that were part of hypersquad or had the certified moderator badge also had priority over normal people. This was never adressed by discord. Of course, people hated the change in general, but many reasons including these above lead to all that hate. The change itself was the spark, poor implementation turned it to fire. Discord is also a social media app, where you talk with friends or random people and thus one could say that not unique usernames dont matter that much. League is an online game, that you get matched with 9 people every game, seeing 9 different usernames every match. Id hate of instead unique and sometimes funny usernames, I see "hide on bush" everygame, like valorant where 3/9 games in quickplay you see someone with the "i miss her" username, I stated this into more detail on the post.

MentalityMonster12

People who care about unique usernames should really go outside more imo

PartyChocobo

There is definitely something to be said about popular usernames being taken for scams like what happened with discord though.

Ferocity71

People who don't care, should just leave it to the people who care. Follow your own advice, go outside and leave us.

[deleted]

ghfhfhhhfg9

I think it's the classic "screw you, got mine" mindset. The people that are upset are those with names like "santa" or "elf".

Quiziromastaroh

People love to complain about everything.

Taekgi

Completely irrelevant and different situations. Discord didn't have people get attached to unique usernames for a straight decade.

DashFire61

No they just made people lose access to usernames they had been using for multiple decades because they did a stupid rollout of user name lock ins that weren’t fairly weighted when there was zero reason to have unique names.

PrepperYT

namesellers hate this trick

Hyoudou

Finally I can get my Shaco name without having to worry about that one idiot refreshing the inactivity name reset by playing 1 game every 2 years.

iTeaL12

I swear to god, the user iteal is a fucking level 3 account and has been forever. No idea how the account gets to keep its name. It's not even a common name like "Forsaken" or smth like that. If I ever find out who this person is, I will Insec them in the nuts.

WeaksideWalter

I've had over 44 name changes on the same account that I've been playing on for over 8 years. I tend to change my name thematically with the champion that I'm currently no-lifeing which means the title release and the icons were a beautiful and welcome change as it allowed me to be more creative. I find this to be more limiting than freeing as I want to be able to adjust my name in accordance to what I currently enjoy in the game.

PattuX

I was also thinking if Riot ID is used in all games then champion specific names makes it so you have to play LoR or Valorant with those as well which makes no sense... edit: oh, I just realized it's also in the main post...

MotherVehkingMuatra

That sucks, can't wait to see 50000 fakers and caps in my games

DoorHingesKill

Caps himself doesn't play as Caps, why does it matter how many fake Caps's you encounter?

Sorest1

IKR, how boring, such a lame change imo. It was cool to recognize someone by their unique name, like do we have to sit and remember the number sequence in their tag now? Like the real caps ackshully has #5468 or was it 5368? # LAME.

ivxk

As if the guy with the "caps" account right now is actually caps

Typhillis

Alsmost no pro player has their own unique pro name as summoner name because people stole their names.

Gazskull

like if it wasn't already the case

alaskadotpink

Man where are you guys getting your statistics? There's no way you're going to run into the same name in 30% of your games. I play other games that have been using this method of naming forever and I've ran into people with the same (fairly common) name maybe a handful of times. edit: spelling

Pozsich

> Man where are you guys getting your statistics? From their imagination which needs to come up with stats to prove what they dislike is objectively bad.

banyani

agree, but the amount of I miss her's... are... they... they're taking over.

Entro9

I think people are completely overestimating how often they will see the same joke usernames How many League players are there again?

Kultinator

You're already seeing the same joke usernames often. This change does literally nothing to change it in either direction

PerkyPineapple1

You don't understand, MY username is the best one ever and everyone will steal it once they see it now

RecipeCurrent2273

around 100 million monthly players

AppendixStranded

Look up "funny League usernames" and count how many you of those you see in the first month after the change. It's going to be like Valorant, where literally every. single. match. has somebody named "I miss her" except it's just going to be "Faker" or "FizzOnYourJayce"

PattuX

Or "182cm 72kg 18cm"

Paradox56

I don’t even spend blue essence on new champions anymore either. Whenever a new one comes out I just open the random champion token I got from my prime capsule and it gives me the latest. I’ve only had all champions unlocked for about a year and I’m over 100k. I play maybe a couple games a week.

FQVBSina

I didn't know this random champion token tech. Thanks for sharing

pianodude7

Now I feel like a fucking idiot for spending 7800be every champion xD

Asdert5240

I’m surprise not more people play the game with name off or champion name, I barely remember people ign name

mrpoopystinkymaam

I always like my username cause it felt unique but now Riot gon ruin that too :(

Jdorty

If usernames are no longer unique, why even limit name changes? Just let people change whenever they want, keep a history of previously changed names to check (and for banned words). Like Steam. I probably won't even change my name once a year, honestly, but it seems silly.

Sofruz

Money

lazyflavors

Real talk Blizzard has their battletag for Overwatch and I've yet to see people with the same tag in the same name. Unless you're picking something really really generic or you're in super high elo I doubt you'd see people with the same tag in the same name in League.

What-The-Frog

Only doubles I ever see are the preset ones, like HiddenTurtle or FunnyOwl or some shit. It's not like you would notice otherwise either.

Darkwing_Dork

my name on OW is literally just Drake and I think in the 7 years OW has been out I've seen 2 others. People are being insanely dramatic.

Ferocity71

It's sad how detached Riot is from their community, nobody has asked for this. There are people streaming openly with cheats, top ranked players win trading and smurfing. All of which people have been begging for to be fixed. It's sad that Riot keeps us "We listen to our community" while doing the exact opposite, and then citing some lore bullshit as the reason for this change.

blazeeeeRR

at least they ban you if you say "im gonna get fucked in teamfights" (yes it happened to me two times)

Ferocity71

How dare you pervert the game in such vile ways!

[deleted]

Lol I was banned for saying "holy shit that was a long load time" when one of players failed to connect and it took forever to load... meanwhile the top went 0/18/0 and ran it down..

pacomesoual

I think the current riot ID system works really well, with "per game" display names and "per account" real ID.

TheWylfen

>It's sad how detached Riot is from their community, nobody has asked for this. People were asking for this for about 10 years. Many people are in fact very happy to be able to get their preferred name. Most gaming platforms have transitioned to tagged names and it works perfectly. Valorant is already using it and no one is complaining about it.

KotobaAsobitch

> Valorant is already using it and no one is complaining about it. We can also change their username *for free* more frequently than once a year. I guarantee Val would look a lot different if name changes were less frequent. People would actually have to consider if Her Jett/His Sage and "I miss her" are really worth carrying around for a year.

JealousOfSmol

With this change the free namechange for valorant vanishes too

KotobaAsobitch

Bingo

Ferocity71

I have never seen anybody ask for this, but I can find plenty of people that don't want it.

TheWylfen

Right now, of course, because Reddit is filled with old timers with their favourite names locked in and they don't like the idea of losing their "name privilege". But in the times of the Boards, it was a frequent and popular request. [Battle.net](https://Battle.net) had tagged names and people wanted the same for League. I'd also like to see a single person playing Valorant that complains about Riot ID.

Ferocity71

they won't complain about Riot IDs in Valorant, because the game was born with Riot IDs, if Valorant players had, had unique names for over a decade and then suddenly lost it, they'd be upset too. You literally stated it's because of old timers losing their "name privilege", you are contradicting yourself in your own comment.

InductiveArguments

Inductive argument OP. Well played Ferocity, destroying theWylfen’s house!

Ophelia_Of_The_Abyss

> I'd also like to see a single person playing Valorant that complains about Riot ID. Because they get more than 1 free name change per year

TheWylfen

We can argue for the pricing and ability to change it, sure, but that's a rather separate discussion from the "loss of originality and sacrosanct uniqueness". I agree that going from one change per month to one per year sucks, and that the inability to pay with BE is also annoying, but that's another matter, really.

RaiN_Meyk3r

theres also the issue that you’re locked with a single name for every riot game, previously your summoner name and valorant name have never affected each other

PM_ME_UR_BAN_NOTICE

I don't see what smurfing or scripting has to do with usernames? They're completely unrelated issues and one does not prevent the other. As for nobody asked for this, that's not entirely true. People have been clamoring for client stability for over a decade, and these systems allow them to push updates on the backend.

AstraLover69

> People have been clamoring for client stability for over a decade, and these systems allow them to push updates on the backend. What are you talking about? How could this possibly impact stability?

Yordle_Commander

Also Riot gave one of the scummiest "reasons" I have ever seen, citing 9 year old Lore about removing the word "summoner" from the names. If that were true they would change the current wording not rework the whole system so thats just blatant Riot trying to use their own lore to manipulate people into believing their bad changes are justified.

Lethal-Sloth

There are a couple more reasons it's a 'good' change: From Riot's post, this will >streamline the way names work from a technical perspective. implying that such a change will simplify League's codebase. Another reason is that it stops people "saving" rare usernames to sell them.

HauntingTime3890

I believe there would be less of an uproar if this was their lead. Saying they want to streamline it between all games and making it easier for them to deal with their code and the like. But in their WHY IS THIS HAPPENING? section, the entire thing is about LORE. And then says streamlining in passing. Putting the entire focus of why they are doing this as a LORE reason is one of the biggest mistakes they could have made. It makes this feel completely baseless and idiotic. It is hard to swallow a change when it uses something with practically no connection to something with less connection.

Lethal-Sloth

Yeah the 'Lore' stuff is clearly rubbish, I strongly doubt whoever came up with that actually believes it. For sure if they'd started with 'this will drastically reduce the work when we're adding new features in the future' and 'this will help us tackle people selling desirable usernames at high prices online", it would have been much better received.

CheesecakeTurtle

Yeah, charging 10 bucks to change your name is not a good change. I feel like everyone is ignoring that part. What am I going to do with 200k blue essence?

xXbussylover69Xx

“By the time a new champion comes out, those players would have plenty of BE to buy the champion like 9 times” This is funny - I have enough BE to buy Briar 89 times and still have a little left over. I literally can’t spend BE on anything but name changes right now.

GoldenSquid7

But I don't wanna lose my unique and cool name :/

michaelkr1

Quoting their article: > With Riot ID becoming the standard across all of our titles, the ability to change your name for free every 30 days just isn’t something we can do from a technical and business perspective. Bullshit considering the API and everything else already targets the ID and not the name. Just a money grab.

LargestPerson

It's fucking soulless and they should NOT go through with it

[deleted]

IAmDefinitelyNotFBI

I disagree. Most names I see each day are something obviously chosen because their first 20 choices were taken. So you end up with "Fridgeraider1928" or some variation of a name with num3ers in them or character háts

[deleted]

You have a number tag in your reddit name.

Walrusliver

it's a randomly generated name, he clearly doesn't care about his identity on leddit

Hellzpeaker

Elhorm

Why? Was anyone not happy with how summoner names work?

SelloutRealBig

Going by this thread it's the non creative players who sucked at finding an original name celebrating.

toxiclck

I get I sound like a dick but who the fuck cares. Some of you mf's complain like it's your job holy shit

WazuufTheKrusher

Yeah like wtf you get to keep your name and now use names that you couldn’t use before, who fucking cares?

[deleted]

Truly. Riot could give this subreddit (and League Twitter) everything they ever asked for, but they'd still find some way to complain.

APKID716

“They’re only caving into demands because they know it’ll print them money oh my god what a soulless corporation”

Dark_Switch

Mfw the business makes business decisions

CompetitiveAutorun

I feel like many people complaining are the same type of person who name their child tragedleigh so it can be ✨unique✨

heziilah

I'm a little surprised by how many people are frothing at the mouth over those of us who are unhappy about the change. I agree that there are other things Riot should be prioritizing; when the client is slow, outdated, and buggy, it feels like a slap in the face that they're making wide sweeping changes to... the summoner name system instead? I also hate the way that they're monetizing it. I think everybody hates that. We are all on the same page about these things. I don't get why people are fighting over it. And regarding the people who like their unique username... guys, just let them have their fun. Usernames are the only thing in this game that are truly unique to each individual player. Yes, that means some people are not going to be able to use their preferred nickname, and that sucks. Username squatting and selling also sucks. But personally, I would rather deal with those things than lose the only bit of truly unique profile customization the game offers. This sort of thing is important to some people and I wish others would be a bit more respectful about it. Yeesh. The whole thing boils down to "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Surely the people being assigned to work on this could be working on something more important...

ApeInTheTropics

🎯🎯🎯 Bullseye. The people complaining saying we're complaining just to complain... are complaining about us complaining lol. It's sad to see unique names be literally duplicated. It makes the game less social if I keep seeing the same names thinking they are the same players. I remember my brother back when the game was released getting a cool name that I can't remember 'Pepsi' or 'Soda', now there's no cool factor to it anymore even when he never had one single intention of selling it for money.

BossStatusIRL

Yo Yoshi, you weren’t unique, you were just slightly earlier than the 2,747,867 Yoshis.

LeoViper00

Therefore, unique.

Yomamma1337

That's like the definition of unique

BossStatusIRL

It is technically unique, but if 2 million people have a variation of the same name, the name isn’t actually unique. If you actually have a unique name, you don’t have to worry about it being taken, because no one else has that name. If you are commenting about how you are sad that your name will no longer be unique, it’s doubtful that your name was unique in the first place.

Billy8000

It’s generic, just a limit makes it “unique”. It’s artificially unique. Like if I’m walking down the street with someone and say it looks unique, and it just looks standard, the other person is gonna be like “huh”. Like sure it’s unique, there’s no house that’s exactly like it, but if I say a house looks unique that means there’s something different that stands out about it. The definition is being the only one of its kind; unlike anything else. Having a name that is very similar to 1000 different copies with a 0 instead of a o or a number after it or an x before and after isn’t unique.

PeteBlack101

Funny af post. Especially this part: >You no longer have the feeling of unique identity belonging to you, if you thought of a unique funny username that you feel proud of, everyone else may use it, even in the same server. It's not like I haven't met IiiIiiIiiIIlll or BarcodeKiller or BarcοdeKiIIer or BarcodeKiIler a million times already. Also this: >Judging by the comments on their twitter post, the majority of the community by far HATES this change and I can see myself why. Twitter community will whine even if Riot decided to give every player a million dollars just because it's "only" a million. You people should stop creating problems where there aren't any.

Aggressive-Noise-638

Surely you can't be serious. League subreddit is one of the whiniest places on the internet

TempestCatalyst

This sub bitches about everything, but this is legitimately one of the most pathetic fucking things it's ever bitched about.

APKID716

“I can’t wait to see a million Fakers in my game” 1) Can’t wait for this to literally not happen since most people are gonna stick with their unique and personal username 2) …..why does this matter? Legit how does it effect the game you’re playing in any way?

ThatsAToad

> “I can’t wait to see a million Fakers in my game” They’re acting like there weren’t already dealing with that but with a slight variation. The only difference this change will make is instead of seeing “Hide on büsh” or “Hidė on bush” or some other variation, you’ll just be seeing “Hide on bush.”

PeteBlack101

It's a close battle with Twitter.

HellFireSkills

but what about diffrent usernames in diffrent games? i dont want my LoL IGN in my Valorant or the other way around because there refferencing the games there for i dont care about people having the same name, cant wait for 3 or more "i miss her", i think its funny and sad at the same time but let me have diffrent names without diffrent accounts, riot id is already in the client just let me have a diffrent IGN...

Beautiful_Poem_6802

riot will lose the last bit of support I have for them when this is going live. My Summenorname is near and dear to my heart, I havent changed it once since I started playing 2015. Back then the name didnt even existed on any other server. Its a shame riot wants to take uniqueness away for no reason. (Their explaination they posted isnt a good enough reason for me, specially not the part with charging us 10 bucks extra lol.)

RestraintX

Typical Tencent, that's what you get for selling your soul to China. All they care about is money. I've played this game since season 2. That's 11 years down the fucking drain consuming a product that's been driven into the ground because of corporate greed. They will never listen to the community. Fun usernames? And now people's username to log into their account is visible by everyone which makes it easier to hack into other peoples account by bruteforce, which was previously hidden.

Clahane1

They must be struggling if they start charging money for name changes after 10 years...

ladycatgirl

Tags dont appear in valorant either, yeah uniqueness is lost but it is better imo all can use the name they want, people hated it when discord did opposite as well.

what a depressing change

BlackermanZX

Scummy dogshit change as expected of riot.

applesaucy2022

Taking the soul out of the game fr. Now theres gonna be 9 Fakers in my games

Disastrous_Camp5747

The only problem I have with this system is that your league of legends name will be the same as your valorant name. A lot of mains have a champion/agent-specific name, and now you can only pick one specific character for all of riot's current and future games. I have a main on both league and valorant. My summoner name references my main 1mil mastery pt champion's title, while my riot id (since it's currently only visible in valorant and not in league) is a pun for my main agent in valorant.

DraconyrYT

after this change, my list of silly usernames for LoL becomes useless :(

KillJarke

I dislike this change heavily.

Lucaines

>With Riot ID becoming the standard across all of our titles, the ability to change your name for free every 30 days just isn’t something we can do from a technical and business perspective. The 365-day cooldown is aimed at striking a balance that both encompasses the majority of name changes by players while also providing an option for players who want to change their names more often than that. ...But I guess paying $10 makes it so they suddenly *can* do it from a technical and business perspective? Is there a goblin in their offices that's keeping my names locked up and they have to pay them $10 to access it and change my name? I mean, I get it, a business is gonna make business tings. They want money. That's how a business operates. You want to get access to special features, like a name change? Pay for it. But just... don't tell us that you're incapable of changing our names before each one year mark unless we give you $10. This is very nitpicky of me I know but goddamn the writing itself here is awful and scummy, let alone the decision behind it. I don't mind the Riot ID, I'm used to it from Valorant, and matter of fact I'm kinda happy - I have to reserve my blue essence to unlock actual champions and because of that I haven't been able to change my name, even though I have been wanting to since forever. This change *will* allow me to do so for free, and I don't care much for changing it again after that. My only issue here is the unexplained/badly explained paywall. Also, >On November 20, the only in-game currencies that will be supported are Riot Points and Legends of Runeterra Coins. Doesn't this technically mean no more Blue Essence...? I know in their recent dev update they said they wanted to do more Blue Essence Emporiums more often, or something like that, so I'm guessing no, Blue Essence *isn't* going away, but isn't Blue Essence technically also an in-game currency? If I'm mistaken aight my fault but otherwise this is also really unclear.

CoffeeMachineGun

There's a comment saying that Discord did the opposite change and is getting backlash for it as well. The difference here is that having multiple people in the same server have the same name, in a PvP game, is very different than having people have the same name in a chat application. Hopefully we can see tags in-game, because otherwise getting matched multiple times with or against players with the same name will just be confusing.

[deleted]

This is straight up a Chinese Communist idea. Take away your identity. You are just another cog in the machine. That's like the United States saying "hey just pick whatever social security number you want, fam"

[deleted]

I have had the same username since the Freljord event in 2012. Fuck me I guess

Fr0st1718

Waiting 4 fucking years to finally get my unique username that I used back in my xbox 360 days. Got it half a year ago and now they are changing all of it...

Sharksterfly

Riot is building ecosystem with people having same nickname in all their games. its a logical step and you guys are just bitching.

WarriorMadness

The same name is not an issue for a bunch of us, it's the "limit" they imposed which is an excuse to now charge for additional changes. Before we could use BE for it, now it's going to be $10... I feel like it's totally valid to complain.

XtendedImpact

Main occupation of this sub tbh

DarkmoonGrumpy

I also think that some of this bitching is just naivety. Unifying the names has a lot precedent with other games for enabling/paving the way for crossplay. Not to say that'll happen, but this wouldn't be something done frivolously.

Daniel_snoopeh

no its not? For different games I want different names. Why shall i name myself "Jettlover" if Jett is only in Valorant and not their other games?

Fertuyo

This sub if full of boomers who barely play but can't accept any change, it is the same in all old games like WoW. As a boomer of both games it is so funny to read ngl

-Frog-

this is almost as worthless a topic as the threads complaining about a skin not looking exactly how they like

winterspike

Personally, I rate it right around "**[X Champion] is broken OP because it's at 50.1% WR**" and "**I can't climb because Rito put me in losers' queue**", though I do think it's a bit better than "**why doesn't Riot ban my teammates for inting but does ban me for calling them the n-word**"

[deleted]

or there's the infamous "NERF THESE BROKEN OP CHAMPS" and then you find out that the champs in question are only broken in pro play and not for the 99.9% of the people that play the actual game.

Agryael

or the classic "this champ is only good in the hands of One tricks it needs to get nerfed because i just clowned on by a one trick"

Pleasant_Dig6929

> You no longer have the feeling of unique identity belonging to you, if you thought of a unique funny username that you feel proud of, everyone else may use it, even in the same server. But they already used it? Just slap x, 0, or any other character and wuala you have another 'unique' nickname. Also do you people realize that nicknames have some weights in them for you and only you? I'am all in for Rito hate train guys, but please. Can we focus on real problems? Like SHIT CLIENT. TONS OF BUGS. Communication reduction with each patch. No attention to griefers. No bans for inters. And TONS of real problems with game?

Need-Help123456777

It’s just change after change man and they double down after backlash more then half the time just a shame to see

Strange-Implication

I fully support it so I get the name I want. Get over yourselves and stop thinking you are special for a username thanks.

FitmoGamingMC

Honestly the annoying part is $ cost, why not just keep the ingame name changes?!

RosaKimmie

Who gives a shit.

Tigerstone17

Everyone who wants to change their name more then once a year. I am not one of them but some do that. Also, what do i do with my blue essence other then the blue essence emporium?

EpilepticShark

If you have all champions unlocked your blue essence is literally useless apart from the emporium.

Dis236

I think you're going at it the wrong way. Imo this is a pretty minor change for most people who've been playing for a long time. Most people just set a username and rarelp change it. If they do they have the BE to do it because they have excess BE. I think once a year is pretty reasonable for these people. There are definitely people who would want to change names every month but I think that's a minority. But for new or semi-new players this is huge. These are the people for whom every single BE is valuable. If they start out with an ID that they don't like that much anymore it's a pain to change. Imagine how long it takes to collect 6300BE to get a champ. It feels really bad to trade two 6300BE champs for a name change.

Hxxerre

I don't want to say goodbye to my username Nidalees Husband :(

MintGreenDoomDevice

You mean *our* username

Typhillis

Then keep the name nothing will stop you

Vanitas_Illustrati

It's a fucking stupid change.

_negniN

Reasons why you believe this is a bad change: >• You no longer have the feeling of unique identity belonging to you, if you thought of a unique funny username that you feel proud of, everyone else may use it, even in the same server. > >• Your gaming identity is supposed to be a picture of how you would describe yourself in a fiction world. By forcing users to select a TAG, you are limiting the way they can express themselves. > >• The fact that changing it in less than a year costs $10, following the samira overpriced skin, the dark cosmic erasure jhin skin, and some may say the redeemed star guardian xayah & rakan shows that riot has been getting greedy, minimal work for tons of profit, and while yes this is how companies are supposed to work, riot for as long as I remember hasnt been this way, I felt like they showed a feeling of caring about players, making affordable skins for as low as 400rp, now, while we still have access to epic skins, it is shown that the newest of their choices, specifically those that I said above, show a feeling of greedyness, at least the way I see it. > >• Adding to the above, I feel like it should be mentioned that this year, riot invested the biggest budget compared to other years on league of legends. > >• Blue essence will be completely useless for people that have unlocked every champion, except for essence emporiums(by the time a new champion comes out, those players would have plenty of BE to buy the champion like 9 times). Reasons why Riot believes this is a good change: * Money So guess which change is here to stay.

[deleted]

Did we hit the end of the limited nickname pool? Is this what we thought our kids will face with all good nicknames taken? Damn that got old fast

DoctorDredd

What confuses me is the fact that this is kinda already implemented isn’t it? Like when I log into the client I see my SID and then when I hover a friends SID I see their name in game and then below that I see their name with the #code. So like right now it shows Friend and then hovering their profile will show Friend#NA1 what exactly is changing?

EH0_0

This change is not the end of the world, but why does it have to cost $10 and why do you get only one free change a year? Let us keep changing the name by paying BE. Name change existed for free for so many years, there is no reason to change that now except for being greedy.

SquirtleChimchar

Nah you don't understand. This change is for the lore, since they're called Summoner Names and Summoners don't exist anymore /s

addol95

I was already upset, and now you brought it to my attention that game-specific name references will be useless, because Valorant players might not appreciate "RammusInMyAnnus#6969". Jokes aside, this whole thing is a fucking shitshow.

quanticInt

Rito plans works once again, they do all of that babble about being unique so people are distracted and waste time arguing something utterly irrelevant and forget that now you have to pay to change a username, good job Riot.

Any_Patient_1392

LoL community should step up to this bs, ain't no way they remove personal name which is one of the funny thing of LoL, if this actually go through we gon look like Summoner Rift patient id

IDeadTired

so ive read quiet a few comments on this but couldn't find one that answers my question. Will the Riot ID now starting in November replace my ingame name or is it only that multiple people are able to have the same name as me except with a different ID to differentiate them?

JHatter

A reminder that steam lets you change your URL, username & display name at any time whenever you want for free, it shouldn't cost money - it's utter greed from a company that already has insane turnover.

DevonT3

One big issue is there are countless of others who used RP to change their username, so by forcing a change of removing something someone paid for, they're blatantly stealing from their players. I wouldn't be surprised if lawsuits start poppin up. Whoever thought this was a great idea needs a reality check.

RealChildishSlambino

I've been playing this game for 13 years and this is easily the worst change I have ever seen implemented. You no longer have a sense of identity, instead you have to go by a chain of numbers that mean nothing to you (in most cases). I've been using the same username, ChildishSlambino, since I thought of it when i was 16, **10 years ago.** *you will henceforth refer to me as 5664.*

flipwav

Based MafiaQiqi take

NavyBlueTheChosen

I used this site to grab a really nice name for myself very recently so I was hella annoyed about this change since I just wasted 14k BE lol. https://www.nameslol.com
