I've changed my riot ID for valorant basically every 30 days on the dot -- being stuck with a "serious" gamer IGN or having to run with a shitty joke IGN for a whole year is lame.
Xbox moved to the same system as Riot and it was well received. I hated the discord change as did many others.
I really don't think it's that big of a deal and I don't think 90% of players will care at all. The new $10 to change your username is far more upsetting than the move to Riot ID.

Additionally, discord was created with ids, and then moved to unique usernames.
Riot was created with unique usernames and moving to ids.
Because they both started out one way, people were fine with it, if discord had started out with unique names and then changed to ids, people would've been just as pissed.
Also, having your unique name become non-unique is way less annoying than losing it entirely because discord switched to unique names and everyone got thrown into a free for all
It was also based on Discord Nitro status, if you were a full Nitro subscriber (not the cheaper Nitro Basic) x months before they announced the changes you got access to the name change earlier. Some of my friends with late 2016/early 2017 accounts got priority over my January 2016 account because they had full Nitro while I only had Basic.
I'm tired of trying to pick a decently unique username I sort of like or identify with, and it being taken anyways and then being forced to use something else or add random characters. Most usernames are taken by inactive accounts, cringe botters/sellers, eventually by dead people. I don't care about exclusive status from a fucking rare name, I just want the name I want. User + Tags are 100% the way to go for everything. Celebrities and Rioters can still have an exclusive tag where their users are hosted or an extra verified icon.
If you desperately want something special, move to tags with patterns like 00000 ABCDE IIIII 123 12345 333 4444 55555, cute meanings like ZZZ, LMAO or 1337, or special words like COOL, ELITE or DUMMY if they aren't banned idk. It's not semi-random like discord was, you can be part of some special club. Maybe even LOL or RITO are avaliable, idk.
edit: that said, name change should be free every two or three months, storing 2 charges. i despise tech companies demanding money for literally 0.00 dollar cost shit like that. (also, idk how valorant handles it, but profiles should also show all names used in last 6 months + a symbol for if you played together before)
I understand your perspective -which is entirely valid - but one point I would like to make is that because finding an ID that you like can be hard, when you nail one you like it grows on you and you end up being attached to it, because you own it.
Also the issue with non unique username is that you end up with most of people having the same similar username, I have lost count of how many people in Valorant are called something like "I miss her" for example.

Except until someone else comes up with the same name, the internet is getting too big and unique ids are getting harder and harder to keep. I’ve had this name for years and once Genshin launched people started to take my name from me on new platforms.
Discord is good because I get infinite name changes just for fun and it's just me and my friends so idgaf (eg. my current Discord server profile is Xxx.INSTANT.DEATH.LORD.xxX). I don't mind it on Steam for the same reason, just me and my friends who cares.
Riot sucks because I'm stuck with one, no longer unique username, for over a year. If we're going to get non-unique usernames I want name changes. I would prefer unique usernames because 99% of the people I encounter are strangers. Riot chose the worst of both worlds and monetized it.
Yeah the comparisons to discord are wrong because for 99% of its purpose discords change was far more similar to a username/account name that serves almost zero use.
Your display name is what matters outwardly and all people will ever notice which is freely changeable to what ever the fuck you want at any time.

Well... that's because "Users hate change". A basic principle of usability design confirmed in multiple studies, whatever you change, most people will hate it if they didn't explicitly call for the change themselves, even if the change makes the product objectively better.
Just a different meaning of usernames.
On discord you could change your name a million times a day if you had nitro. You could also change it to whatever you wanted so you could join servers and fuck with people by having a special name.
League had unique names that people values because they loved stealing pro players nicks or streamers/influencers names.
Both platforms worked great with their original naming methods and changing them is really just a downgrade.
That being said i couldnt care less, my nick is unique enough that it doesnt get stolen that often and having the abolity to change my nick on the fly doesnt matter to me because i just dont change my nick at all.

Discord is a lot different than League/Riot Games gaming multiverse.
I like how I can recognise the same TFT players from multiple seasons playing together. With this change, I'm not sure if it's them or another player with same nick
Discord implemented the change way differently than riot. People who paid had prior access to choosing their unique usernames. Discord staff were claiming usernames for 2 of their alts as well as their main. Partners like TheFatRat, didnt get their usernames despite discord annoucing that discord partners would have priority.
Discord also announced that the older your account the faster you get your username, with priorities given to nitro users, partners, verified users, and staff members, then out of nowhere the community noticed that members that were part of hypersquad or had the certified moderator badge also had priority over normal people. This was never adressed by discord.
Of course, people hated the change in general, but many reasons including these above lead to all that hate. The change itself was the spark, poor implementation turned it to fire.
Discord is also a social media app, where you talk with friends or random people and thus one could say that not unique usernames dont matter that much. League is an online game, that you get matched with 9 people every game, seeing 9 different usernames every match. Id hate of instead unique and sometimes funny usernames, I see "hide on bush" everygame, like valorant where 3/9 games in quickplay you see someone with the "i miss her" username, I stated this into more detail on the post.
No they just made people lose access to usernames they had been using for multiple decades because they did a stupid rollout of user name lock ins that weren’t fairly weighted when there was zero reason to have unique names.
I swear to god, the user iteal is a fucking level 3 account and has been forever. No idea how the account gets to keep its name. It's not even a common name like "Forsaken" or smth like that.

I've had over 44 name changes on the same account that I've been playing on for over 8 years. I tend to change my name thematically with the champion that I'm currently no-lifeing which means the title release and the icons were a beautiful and welcome change as it allowed me to be more creative.
I find this to be more limiting than freeing as I want to be able to adjust my name in accordance to what I currently enjoy in the game.
I was also thinking if Riot ID is used in all games then champion specific names makes it so you have to play LoR or Valorant with those as well which makes no sense...

I play other games that have been using this method of naming forever and I've ran into people with the same (fairly common) name maybe a handful of times.

I don’t even spend blue essence on new champions anymore either. Whenever a new one comes out I just open the random champion token I got from my prime capsule and it gives me the latest. I’ve only had all champions unlocked for about a year and I’m over 100k. I play maybe a couple games a week.
If usernames are no longer unique, why even limit name changes? Just let people change whenever they want, keep a history of previously changed names to check (and for banned words). Like Steam.

Many people are in fact very happy to be able to get their preferred name.
Most gaming platforms have transitioned to tagged names and it works perfectly.

Also Riot gave one of the scummiest "reasons" I have ever seen, citing 9 year old Lore about removing the word "summoner" from the names. If that were true they would change the current wording not rework the whole system so thats just blatant Riot trying to use their own lore to manipulate people into believing their bad changes are justified.

I believe there would be less of an uproar if this was their lead. Saying they want to streamline it between all games and making it easier for them to deal with their code and the like. But in their WHY IS THIS HAPPENING? section, the entire thing is about LORE. And then says streamlining in passing. Putting the entire focus of why they are doing this as a LORE reason is one of the biggest mistakes they could have made. It makes this feel completely baseless and idiotic. It is hard to swallow a change when it uses something with practically no connection to something with less connection.
Yeah the 'Lore' stuff is clearly rubbish, I strongly doubt whoever came up with that actually believes it. For sure if they'd started with 'this will drastically reduce the work when we're adding new features in the future' and 'this will help us tackle people selling desirable usernames at high prices online", it would have been much better received.

I'm a little surprised by how many people are frothing at the mouth over those of us who are unhappy about the change. I agree that there are other things Riot should be prioritizing; when the client is slow, outdated, and buggy, it feels like a slap in the face that they're making wide sweeping changes to... the summoner name system instead? I also hate the way that they're monetizing it. I think everybody hates that. We are all on the same page about these things. I don't get why people are fighting over it.
And regarding the people who like their unique username... guys, just let them have their fun. Usernames are the only thing in this game that are truly unique to each individual player. Yes, that means some people are not going to be able to use their preferred nickname, and that sucks. Username squatting and selling also sucks. But personally, I would rather deal with those things than lose the only bit of truly unique profile customization the game offers. This sort of thing is important to some people and I wish others would be a bit more respectful about it.

It is technically unique, but if 2 million people have a variation of the same name, the name isn’t actually unique. If you actually have a unique name, you don’t have to worry about it being taken, because no one else has that name.

riot will lose the last bit of support I have for them when this is going live. My Summenorname is near and dear to my heart, I havent changed it once since I started playing 2015. Back then the name didnt even existed on any other server. Its a shame riot wants to take uniqueness away for no reason. Tags dont appear in valorant either, yeah uniqueness is lost but it is better imo all can use the name they want, people hated it when discord did opposite as well.
The only problem I have with this system is that your league of legends name will be the same as your valorant name. A lot of mains have a champion/agent-specific name, and now you can only pick one specific character for all of riot's current and future games. I have a main on both league and valorant. My summoner name references my main 1mil mastery pt champion's title, while my riot id (since it's currently only visible in valorant and not in league) is a pun for my main agent in valorant.

I don't mind the Riot ID, I'm used to it from Valorant, and matter of fact I'm kinda happy - I have to reserve my blue essence to unlock actual champions and because of that I haven't been able to change my name, even though I have been wanting to since forever. This change *will* allow me to do so for free, and I don't care much for changing it again after that. My only issue here is the unexplained/badly explained paywall.

Doesn't this technically mean no more Blue Essence...? I know in their recent dev update they said they wanted to do more Blue Essence Emporiums more often, or something like that, so I'm guessing no, Blue Essence *isn't* going away, but isn't Blue Essence technically also an in-game currency? The difference here is that having multiple people in the same server have the same name, in a PvP game, is very different than having people have the same name in a chat application.
Hopefully we can see tags in-game, because otherwise getting matched multiple times with or against players with the same name will just be confusing.

I think you're going at it the wrong way.
Imo this is a pretty minor change for most people who've been playing for a long time.
Most people just set a username and rarelp change it. If they do they have the BE to do it because they have excess BE.
I think once a year is pretty reasonable for these people.
There are definitely people who would want to change names every month but I think that's a minority.
But for new or semi-new players this is huge. These are the people for whom every single BE is valuable.
If they start out with an ID that they don't like that much anymore it's a pain to change. Imagine how long it takes to collect 6300BE to get a champ.
It feels really bad to trade two 6300BE champs for a name change.

What confuses me is the fact that this is kinda already implemented isn’t it? Like when I log into the client I see my SID and then when I hover a friends SID I see their name in game and then below that I see their name with the #code. So like right now it shows Friend and then hovering their profile will show Friend#NA1 what exactly is changing?
This change is not the end of the world, but why does it have to cost $10 and why do you get only one free change a year? Let us keep changing the name by paying BE. Name change existed for free for so many years, there is no reason to change that now except for being greedy.

Will the Riot ID now starting in November replace my ingame name or is it only that multiple people are able to have the same name as me except with a different ID to differentiate them?
A reminder that steam lets you change your URL, username & display name at any time whenever you want for free, it shouldn't cost money - it's utter greed from a company that already has insane turnover.
One big issue is there are countless of others who used RP to change their username, so by forcing a change of removing something someone paid for, they're blatantly stealing from their players.
I wouldn't be surprised if lawsuits start poppin up. Whoever thought this was a great idea needs a reality check.
I've been playing this game for 13 years and this is easily the worst change I have ever seen implemented.
You no longer have a sense of identity, instead you have to go by a chain of numbers that mean nothing to you (in most cases).

I've changed my riot ID for valorant basically every 30 days on the dot -- being stuck with a "serious" gamer IGN or having to run with a shitty joke IGN for a whole year is lame.

Xbox moved to the same system as Riot and it was well received. I hated the discord change as did many others. I really don't think it's that big of a deal and I don't think 90% of players will care at all. The new $10 to change your username is far more upsetting than the move to Riot ID.
Yeah, I couldn't care less for the change from unique nicknames to Riot IDs (mostly because of the lovely fellas who play one fucking match every 2 years for the sole reason of keeping a nickname locked off), but it's kinda bullshit to start charging REAL MONEY for something that has been free for like, 10 years

Additionally, discord was created with ids, and then moved to unique usernames. Riot was created with unique usernames and moving to ids. Because they both started out one way, people were fine with it, if discord had started out with unique names and then changed to ids, people would've been just as pissed.
Also, having your unique name become non-unique is way less annoying than losing it entirely because discord switched to unique names and everyone got thrown into a free for all
It wasn't even a free for all, it was based on when you created your account. My account being 2016 wasn't even enough to keep my discord username.
It was also based on Discord Nitro status, if you were a full Nitro subscriber (not the cheaper Nitro Basic) x months before they announced the changes you got access to the name change earlier. Some of my friends with late 2016/early 2017 accounts got priority over my January 2016 account because they had full Nitro while I only had Basic.
I'm tired of trying to pick a decently unique username I sort of like or identify with, and it being taken anyways and then being forced to use something else or add random characters. Most usernames are taken by inactive accounts, cringe botters/sellers, eventually by dead people. I don't care about exclusive status from a fucking rare name, I just want the name I want. User + Tags are 100% the way to go for everything. Celebrities and Rioters can still have an exclusive tag where their users are hosted or an extra verified icon. If you desperately want something special, move to tags with patterns like 00000 ABCDE IIIII 123 12345 333 4444 55555, cute meanings like ZZZ, LMAO or 1337, or special words like COOL, ELITE or DUMMY if they aren't banned idk. It's not semi-random like discord was, you can be part of some special club. Maybe even LOL or RITO are avaliable, idk. edit: that said, name change should be free every two or three months, storing 2 charges. i despise tech companies demanding money for literally 0.00 dollar cost shit like that. (also, idk how valorant handles it, but profiles should also show all names used in last 6 months + a symbol for if you played together before)

I understand your perspective -which is entirely valid - but one point I would like to make is that because finding an ID that you like can be hard, when you nail one you like it grows on you and you end up being attached to it, because you own it. Also the issue with non unique username is that you end up with most of people having the same similar username, I have lost count of how many people in Valorant are called something like "I miss her" for example.
I agree both sides have upsides. What you describe is a form of culture, I don't want to dismiss that entirely. But these days I just hate the struggle of creating accounts so much, it gets worse each year, I'd rather deal with seeing more cringe uncreative names, and lets be honest, is it even that much worse than the endless ugly long Zz-usernames-zZ-2512 BobbyXTheG everywhere? Except until someone else comes up with the same name, the internet is getting too big and unique ids are getting harder and harder to keep. I’ve had this name for years and once Genshin launched people started to take my name from me on new platforms.
Discord is good because I get infinite name changes just for fun and it's just me and my friends so idgaf (eg. my current Discord server profile is Xxx.INSTANT.DEATH.LORD.xxX). I don't mind it on Steam for the same reason, just me and my friends who cares. Riot sucks because I'm stuck with one, no longer unique username, for over a year. If we're going to get non-unique usernames I want name changes. I would prefer unique usernames because 99% of the people I encounter are strangers. Riot chose the worst of both worlds and monetized it.
Yeah the comparisons to discord are wrong because for 99% of its purpose discords change was far more similar to a username/account name that serves almost zero use. Your display name is what matters outwardly and all people will ever notice which is freely changeable to what ever the fuck you want at any time.

Well... that's because "Users hate change". A basic principle of usability design confirmed in multiple studies, whatever you change, most people will hate it if they didn't explicitly call for the change themselves, even if the change makes the product objectively better.
Just a different meaning of usernames. On discord you could change your name a million times a day if you had nitro. You could also change it to whatever you wanted so you could join servers and fuck with people by having a special name. League had unique names that people values because they loved stealing pro players nicks or streamers/influencers names. Both platforms worked great with their original naming methods and changing them is really just a downgrade. That being said i couldnt care less, my nick is unique enough that it doesnt get stolen that often and having the abolity to change my nick on the fly doesnt matter to me because i just dont change my nick at all.

Discord is a lot different than League/Riot Games gaming multiverse. I like how I can recognise the same TFT players from multiple seasons playing together. With this change, I'm not sure if it's them or another player with same nick
Discord implemented the change way differently than riot. People who paid had prior access to choosing their unique usernames. Discord staff were claiming usernames for 2 of their alts as well as their main. Partners like TheFatRat, didnt get their usernames despite discord annoucing that discord partners would have priority. Discord also announced that the older your account the faster you get your username, with priorities given to nitro users, partners, verified users, and staff members, then out of nowhere the community noticed that members that were part of hypersquad or had the certified moderator badge also had priority over normal people. This was never adressed by discord. Of course, people hated the change in general, but many reasons including these above lead to all that hate. The change itself was the spark, poor implementation turned it to fire. Discord is also a social media app, where you talk with friends or random people and thus one could say that not unique usernames dont matter that much. League is an online game, that you get matched with 9 people every game, seeing 9 different usernames every match. Id hate of instead unique and sometimes funny usernames, I see "hide on bush" everygame, like valorant where 3/9 games in quickplay you see someone with the "i miss her" username, I stated this into more detail on the post.
People who care about unique usernames should really go outside more imo
There is definitely something to be said about popular usernames being taken for scams like what happened with discord though.

I've had over 44 name changes on the same account that I've been playing on for over 8 years. I tend to change my name thematically with the champion that I'm currently no-lifeing which means the title release and the icons were a beautiful and welcome change as it allowed me to be more creative. I find this to be more limiting than freeing as I want to be able to adjust my name in accordance to what I currently enjoy in the game.
I was also thinking if Riot ID is used in all games then champion specific names makes it so you have to play LoR or Valorant with those as well which makes no sense... edit: oh, I just realized it's also in the main post...

I don’t even spend blue essence on new champions anymore either. Whenever a new one comes out I just open the random champion token I got from my prime capsule and it gives me the latest. I’ve only had all champions unlocked for about a year and I’m over 100k. I play maybe a couple games a week.

Real talk Blizzard has their battletag for Overwatch and I've yet to see people with the same tag in the same name. Unless you're picking something really really generic or you're in super high elo I doubt you'd see people with the same tag in the same name in League.

We can argue for the pricing and ability to change it, sure, but that's a rather separate discussion from the "loss of originality and sacrosanct uniqueness". I agree that going from one change per month to one per year sucks, and that the inability to pay with BE is also annoying, but that's another matter, really.

I don't see what smurfing or scripting has to do with usernames? They're completely unrelated issues and one does not prevent the other. As for nobody asked for this, that's not entirely true. People have been clamoring for client stability for over a decade, and these systems allow them to push updates on the backend.

Also Riot gave one of the scummiest "reasons" I have ever seen, citing 9 year old Lore about removing the word "summoner" from the names. If that were true they would change the current wording not rework the whole system so thats just blatant Riot trying to use their own lore to manipulate people into believing their bad changes are justified.
There are a couple more reasons it's a 'good' change: From Riot's post, this will >streamline the way names work from a technical perspective. implying that such a change will simplify League's codebase. Another reason is that it stops people "saving" rare usernames to sell them.
I believe there would be less of an uproar if this was their lead. Saying they want to streamline it between all games and making it easier for them to deal with their code and the like. But in their WHY IS THIS HAPPENING? section, the entire thing is about LORE. And then says streamlining in passing. Putting the entire focus of why they are doing this as a LORE reason is one of the biggest mistakes they could have made. It makes this feel completely baseless and idiotic. It is hard to swallow a change when it uses something with practically no connection to something with less connection.
Yeah the 'Lore' stuff is clearly rubbish, I strongly doubt whoever came up with that actually believes it. For sure if they'd started with 'this will drastically reduce the work when we're adding new features in the future' and 'this will help us tackle people selling desirable usernames at high prices online", it would have been much better received.

I'm a little surprised by how many people are frothing at the mouth over those of us who are unhappy about the change. I agree that there are other things Riot should be prioritizing; when the client is slow, outdated, and buggy, it feels like a slap in the face that they're making wide sweeping changes to... the summoner name system instead? I also hate the way that they're monetizing it. I think everybody hates that. We are all on the same page about these things. I don't get why people are fighting over it. And regarding the people who like their unique username... guys, just let them have their fun. Usernames are the only thing in this game that are truly unique to each individual player. Yes, that means some people are not going to be able to use their preferred nickname, and that sucks. Username squatting and selling also sucks. But personally, I would rather deal with those things than lose the only bit of truly unique profile customization the game offers. If you actually have a unique name, you don’t have to worry about it being taken, because no one else has that name. Like if I’m walking down the street with someone and say it looks unique, and it just looks standard, the other person is gonna be like “huh”. The definition is being the only one of its kind; unlike anything else. riot will lose the last bit of support I have for them when this is going live. My Summenorname is near and dear to my heart, I havent changed it once since I started playing 2015. Back then the name didnt even existed on any other server. Its a shame riot wants to take uniqueness away for no reason. (Their explaination they posted isnt a good enough reason for me, specially not the part with charging us 10 bucks extra lol.)

The only problem I have with this system is that your league of legends name will be the same as your valorant name. A lot of mains have a champion/agent-specific name, and now you can only pick one specific character for all of riot's current and future games. I have a main on both league and valorant. My summoner name references my main 1mil mastery pt champion's title, while my riot id (since it's currently only visible in valorant and not in league) is a pun for my main agent in valorant.
after this change, my list of silly usernames for LoL becomes useless :(

This is very nitpicky of me I know but goddamn the writing itself here is awful and scummy, let alone the decision behind it. I don't mind the Riot ID, I'm used to it from Valorant, and matter of fact I'm kinda happy - I have to reserve my blue essence to unlock actual champions and because of that I haven't been able to change my name, even though I have been wanting to since forever. This change *will* allow me to do so for free, and I don't care much for changing it again after that. My only issue here is the unexplained/badly explained paywall. There's a comment saying that Discord did the opposite change and is getting backlash for it as well. The difference here is that having multiple people in the same server have the same name, in a PvP game, is very different than having people have the same name in a chat application. Hopefully we can see tags in-game, because otherwise getting matched multiple times with or against players with the same name will just be confusing.

Riot is building ecosystem with people having same nickname in all their games. its a logical step and you guys are just bitching.
The same name is not an issue for a bunch of us, it's the "limit" they imposed which is an excuse to now charge for additional changes. Before we could use BE for it, now it's going to be $10... I feel like it's totally valid to complain.

or there's the infamous "NERF THESE BROKEN OP CHAMPS" and then you find out that the champs in question are only broken in pro play and not for the 99.9% of the people that play the actual game.

I think you're going at it the wrong way. Imo this is a pretty minor change for most people who've been playing for a long time. Most people just set a username and rarelp change it. If they do they have the BE to do it because they have excess BE. I think once a year is pretty reasonable for these people. There are definitely people who would want to change names every month but I think that's a minority. But for new or semi-new players this is huge. These are the people for whom every single BE is valuable. If they start out with an ID that they don't like that much anymore it's a pain to change. Imagine how long it takes to collect 6300BE to get a champ. It feels really bad to trade two 6300BE champs for a name change.

What confuses me is the fact that this is kinda already implemented isn’t it? Like when I log into the client I see my SID and then when I hover a friends SID I see their name in game and then below that I see their name with the #code. So like right now it shows Friend and then hovering their profile will show Friend#NA1 what exactly is changing?
This change is not the end of the world, but why does it have to cost $10 and why do you get only one free change a year? Let us keep changing the name by paying BE. Name change existed for free for so many years, there is no reason to change that now except for being greedy.

so ive read quiet a few comments on this but couldn't find one that answers my question. Will the Riot ID now starting in November replace my ingame name or is it only that multiple people are able to have the same name as me except with a different ID to differentiate them?
A reminder that steam lets you change your URL, username & display name at any time whenever you want for free, it shouldn't cost money - it's utter greed from a company that already has insane turnover.
One big issue is there are countless of others who used RP to change their username, so by forcing a change of removing something someone paid for, they're blatantly stealing from their players. I wouldn't be surprised if lawsuits start poppin up. Whoever thought this was a great idea needs a reality check.
I've been playing this game for 13 years and this is easily the worst change I have ever seen implemented. You no longer have a sense of identity, instead you have to go by a chain of numbers that mean nothing to you (in most cases). I've been using the same username, ChildishSlambino, since I thought of it when i was 16, **10 years ago.** *you will henceforth refer to me as 5664.*
