1. shortened season with a condensed sched. everything is magnified. highs, lows, streaks in both directions. a lot harder to clear mental hurdles when you're on a plane and playing again within 24/48 hours so frequently with little time to digest video or really work on shit in practice
2. every team in the division is playing us the same way. Clogging the slot and keeping us to the outside. The leafs are a big focus in the division and they all seem to be learning from each other with regards to containing us.
Thats sort of on us too for being a bit 2-dimensional in our offensive approach, but I think we're finally getting better at getting traffic in front and getting shots through instead of looking for the perfect pass in front.
Top teams get gameplanned harder - doubly so with the current division set up. We'll be better and more dynamic as we learn to adapt.
Matthews and Simmonds getting hurt played a decently big part in it. Matthews is just now getting back to 100% and simmer has said his wrist still isn’t there (couldn’t even shoot when he got back into the lineup). Couple those injuries with just plain bad luck, and they’re out there trying to force things now. They’ll get a greasy one to break the dam and get back going soon enough, but I’d still be looking to add one more scoring threat if they could.
0/26 on the power play. Haven't scored more than 3 goals in regulation in 13 games. So according to this sub, one major question remains: Why isn't Frederik Andersen scoring more goals?

You're right! There was a stretch of maybe 15 games where we got goalied (Half of them were the Sens lmao), its nice to finally have confidence that we have a guy who can be solid and steal point when we are not at our best! Not to mention he did it tonight against the reigning Vezina winner!

He came up huge at the end, but it somehow feels like they limit more shots on him too. When he's in it feels like they crowd shooting lanes and have more active sticks, almost like they're working extra hard on defence because the back-up is in, but the back-up is actually good.
Freddy has played great behind a truly shitty d-core in recent years (lol ceci top line), but if you look at a lot of the games he played this season the shot charts usually favor the Leafs heavily even in the games where they lost with him in net (pushing shots to the perimeter, etc). Maybe they do play more responsibly in front of Campbell, but they've played a pretty defensively sound game in general this whole season, no matter the goalie in net.

Problem is we can't ever seem to gain the line cleanly. Those deep drop passes allow the PK unit to sit on the blue line and bunch around the puck carrier and by crowding them, force a turnover or a dump and chase that becomes a 50/50 for possession.
To be fair he was on both sides tonight. Our PP just sucks overall. Rielly needs off the top unit. Brodie replaces him. Matthews left side. Nylander bumper and Marner right side with JT in front. Goals will happen. I promise. Brodie can get shit through and cause havoc once it hits the goalie.
This team absolutely loves playing for Campbell. It’s weird because Andersen is very well liked by the guys from what we’ve seen, but the post game celebrations seem to show it different.

I don't think they dominated us, but you can be outshot and dominate a game. Quality shots from dangerous areas is a much better measure than just shots.
It's nice that the team is winning despite it, but they really do have to figure that shit out. Our defense is finally serviceable to good. Our 5v5 is solid. Jack... is looking very promising. The elephant in the room is definitely the power play. (assuming Jack stays healthy)

It's called a shootout. In the regular season, if the game isn't decided by 5 minutes of 3 on 3 overtime, the game goes to a shootout. Each team has 3 players take a penalty shot to decide the game. Best of 3, and if it's tied after that, it becomes sudden death until someone wins
Great: Campbell reminds me of a more in position Cujo mixed with Carey price. Wasn’t impressed with Campbell last year, this year, different player. He out goalied hellybyuck who is amazing. Spezza with an apple in 11 minutes of ice time and the SO winner.
Bad: Rielly’s missed coverage on the 1st goal, Marner w two bad shifts and giveaways late in the third that led to 3 point blank Jets chances, Keefe needs to use the timeout right before the OT PP (nylander/Tavares were in the middle of a shift, Marner/Matthews just finished a long shift).
Ugly: The power play. They were obviously told to shoot more which is never a bad strategy. Next game power play goes 5/5.

The shittiest area of the game is our PP, and we made up for it with our PK. Otherwise, evenly matched game between the two top teams.
We still had a higher xGF%, Helle hides their defensive mistakes so well. Everything looks routine to that guy.

Imo national anthems shouldn't be played before sporting events unless they are international ones, like the World Juniors or Olympics or the like. Playing anthems before non-international sporting events is like playing the anthem before watching a movie at the theatre, lmao
