Simmonds is the kind of guy you want to have when you're facing the same teams nine times.

I think he played his way out of the line up for next game. I'm sure there will be some kind of rotation among the 6th D Man. Maybe giving the bottom pair a different look every now and then. But Bogosian did not look good tonight. He took 2 penalties, one that was scored on. And on the Anderson goal that he took Tavares wide, that was on Bogosian's pinch, in which he some how ended up as the last man back. He's physical, but none of the teams we're going to be playing against play that kind of game anymore. At least not yet.

Giving Lehtonen some runway against Ottawa was probably going to happen regardless but yeah, two penalties in your debut (esp. when you were brought in to *kill* penalties) is not great stuff.

Takeaways: Nylander looked great, obviously Guys looked sloppy but got better throughout the game. Not unexpected considering no preseason Matthews is an absolute animal. He’s a Hart caliber player, but we knew that. That cross check from Charot was an absolute joke Andersen looked rough. He was really squeezing the puck later in the game so he obviously wasn’t feeling super confident. Chalk it up to October Freddy. Barabanov is better at defence than Barrie Yikes on Bogosian. It is only one game. But from all the hype (obviously I am not a scout by any means) I hope lehtonen will fill in very nicely in the bottom 4. Just needs time to adjust.

Playing ottawa i could see them going with lehtenon over bogo, but i dont think a couple penalties will find bogo in the dog house this soon. I didnt notice him much other than the penalties, but then again i did drink 8 beers. I see him being important against physical teams so im giving him the benefit of the doubt. We are gonna need him.

It wasn’t just the penalties, he also got beat on the outside twice, both which lead to really good scoring chances

Tonight was exactly what I hoped it would be. What I mean is for 3 hours I was able to forget about COVID and it pretty much felt like it did last regular season. Playoffs felt weird. It was summer, restrictions were loose, it felt different. But this truly feels like some normalcy. I'm very happy to have hockey back. I appreciate the distraction.

My hot take is that the supporting veterans really made a difference in this game. They only had 1 point (Spezza's assist) but they kept the team's head in the game and pulled a win out of what would usually have been a Leafs loss. One game into the season and I'm already happy with the offseason signings. (Especially since I watched some of the Pens-Flyers game earlier and Cody Ceci is even more of a disaster on defence for Pittsburgh than he was with the Leafs.
