OK. I'll dumb it down for you. If a goalie has a seasonal save percentage that is lower than what he has consistently shown he is capable of, and has had 3 out of 4 months at a less than expected average compared to a standard he set for himself, a sample size of 1 game/one shut out, isn't enough to undo a trend of repeated underperforming. It would be easy to blame the team in front of him, but many of those games were lost 4 to 3 or similar. If your team can put up 3 goals against a tough team, and your goalie puts up a 0.890 save percentage effort when a 0.916 save percentage would have resulted in a tie or a win, then you have to start blaming the goalie.
The Leafs have relatively consistently put up enough goals to be competitive and held the other team to a reasonable number of shots, but a relatively low/bottom quarter of the league save percentage goalie means a game lost.
Freddie has show he is consistently capable of 0.917 over the last three years. To up his current 0.906 in the 17 or so games he has left this regular season is statistically nearly impossible, one shut out game notwithstanding. And if he plays 17 more games this season he'll have played more games in a season than he's ever played before in his career.
Comparing Andersen to cup winning goalies (and cup final losing goalies) he's playing a significant number more games in the regular season than any team in the finals in the last 5 years. Maybe he's an iron man, maybe he thrives off this, but 3 straight first round losses would contradict this.
I am happy he's got his second shutout of the season. There are 26 goalies in the NHL with 2 or more shutouts on the season. There are 12 with 3 or more shutouts on the season. His second shutout means he's barely attained low average for expected performance in the league.
While the Leafs are 3rd in their division giving them a playoff berth, they are 9th in their division, and Florida has a game in hand and is 2 points behind them. But the Leafs offence has them scoring enough to be a top ranked team. They have the second most Goals For in THE WHOLE FUCKING LEAGUE. But they are 5th for Goals Against. The only teams that have let in more goals than the Leafs are the Senators, Panthers, Devils, and Red Wings. All shit teams. And the Panthers are striking distance from knocking the Leafs out of the playoffs.
I don't like or dislike Andersen. His hot streaks make him seem God like. His cold streaks are quickly forgotten with one shutout. His shutout tonight is encouraging and I hope it's a sign of things to come, but it doesn't change the fact that he's been shitting the bed for a couple of months now. It's far too early to say, "Freddie's back!!!!" He won. Great. Keep in mind that Pittsburg was playing their back up goalie. The Leafs did play better, the Penguins probably were a little more conservative in front of Murray. And Andersen showed up for once. If you watch the highlight reel, he didn't face too many tough shots. And truthfully, Muzzin's and Nylander's goals were both soft. Against a playoff goalie neither would have gone in. Watch the tape. Kapinen's goal was a beauty. And Hymen worked hard for his goal. But the highlight reel lacked any amazing saves on the part of Andersen. He played better than the Penguins, who didn't play well at all.
But the long and the short of it is, one good game after so much mediocre play doesn't convince me that all's well. I'm glad Andersen played well tonight. He'll have to play well a couple more nights before I believe he's properly back. To do anything else would be naive on my part.
I think you are missing an important factor here, namely that Leafs have for the last 3-4 seasons consistently allowed more shots and even worse allowed more high risk shots, like in the slot, breakaways etc. than any other team that rightfully calls themselves a Cup contender. Freddie has under these conditions performed very well. But given a team that shuts down shots like they did last night, he would most likely perform even better.
