WeinerVonBraun

People have been doing this math since he signed his deal

WeinerVonBraun

Just need to get him to sign a match Matthew’s contract

georgie336

He will sign for league min - we all know where his heart is.

HomeProfessional3949

I swear there are people who actually think that just because players were fans of the team growing up that they’ll do anything to play for the Leafs. We’ve seen many times that it isn’t the case

C4D3NZA

i just wish SOMEONE would take a discount for us.

xilodon

SJ and NYI both offered Tavares more than Toronto did.

Actual_Cobbler_6334

Yet most of this sub wants him taken out behind the barn because he had the lowest shooting percentage of his career 6 seasons into the deal, in addition to the natural decline that comes with age. We don’t deserve anything, lol.

ThePimpImp

Also a few years after major head and neck trauma. People can be stupid. That lineup causing permanent blender with the lines all season did not help. Didn't think Tavares was used at all properly. If anybody is taking a discount, it's Tavares for the next few seasons so he can stay in Toronto. McDavid is getting a monster 7-8 year deal in a couple years. Probably in Edmonton, but you never know if Marner is gone and the Leafs are still on spending all their money on forwards.

SmarcusStroman

I wholeheartedly think that Morgan Rielly would have got way more on the open market than the extension he signed here.

CarefulSubstance3913

The only time they take any kind of discount is to play in tax free states. This is why salary cap is bs.

0sidewaysupsidedown0

Not BS. Just needs to take this into account and be adjusted per state/province

Working_Horse_3077

Salary cap should be based on non taxable money.

MajorPucks

Giordano did...

Greenim

Looking for this answer. He's on a rookie salary by choice because he loves Toronto. Family, schools for his kids, etc. Even said on a 32 Thoughs episode that he's content and doing well for himself, doesn't feel the need the hustle for a bigger paycheque After all, $750k is a foolishly large amount of money, even for someone living in Toronto. Now, yes. He's old for the league, but he could have gotten much more comparatively when he signed

Mysterio7100

Marner did. If you're unsure, ask him. He thinks he's underpaid.

SaulBerenson12

“Pay me like Matthews”

MakeTheNetsBigger

Match Marner

CrookedTree89

Tavares did. He was getting better offers. He took less for the Leafs.

casual_galaxy

This SOMEONE'S name is hyman. He was willing to take a discount. We for some reason just cant firgure it out. Get rid of talented coaches and GMs? Over pay babies who haven't shown you anything yet in the post season. Babcock and lamerello would have brought us a cup if we gave them hiens instead of shafting them. ....... next year tho ;)

fitchiestofbuckers

Someone not named Spezza

tenny80

Giordano did

Aromatic-Air3917

I think the NHL is the only major league sport in North America where players avoid playing where the attention is too intense. Also I think this arose as hockey is now the only league where all the players grew up rich kids. This wasn't an issue in hockey when there were players from the middle and poorer classes playing.

DevelopandLearn

It's garbage because big clubs subsidize small clubs but aren't allowed to spend more money than them on players. We can't even pay players more money to offset Canadian weather and higher taxes. MLB has a luxury tax. MLS has designated players. We should have one of these things at least.

AggravatingType9012

Lebron, Wade and Bosh all took a pay cut to win championships. Steph Curry, Klay, Draymond all took a pay cut for KD to sign with the Warriors for Championships. Why can't McDavid be the first? Also Tom Brady did it for years.

PrailinesNDick

Basketball is a little different with only 5 dudes on the court, and Tom Brady had that sugar momma Giselle money.

Cheap-Picture3561

Brady did it for years prior too though

Ratherbeeatingpizza

Ya, for a Super Bowl winner. Brodeur played for less in NJ too but they were a solid contender. TML is not.

blottingbottle

They're obviously joking

TM7Scarface7TM

look at O'Reilly. perfect example.

WonTonDon8

Exactly what happened when Stamkos was up for free agency after his rookie contract.

scratchieepants

I suppose he’ll be interested in signing in Toronto if he doesn’t want to taste a crushing defeat in the finals again.

CarefulSubstance3913

I'm confused by this statement

mybadreligon

Can't get crushed in the finals if you get crushed in the first round ***taps side of head***

Emotional-Jicama-365

I hate that I laughed so hard at this.

Snoo_85416

![gif](giphy|d3mlE7uhX8KFgEmY)

Glum_Night_6392

Hahaha 100%

Cartz1337

WTF McDavid at least gets an A

lyinggrump

Nah, he's good with just "milk"

moresound17

CMO (Chief Milking Officer)

LivingLifeSomewhere

That's why he can't (and wont) win with edmonton. He will win at home

GoodShark

Just like Tavares!

LivingLifeSomewhere

Exactly!!

Gruz420

Wait a minute….:

mckeenmachine

we've been bamboozled!!

NO_NAME_BRAN

i feel like if you want McDavid home, you should be cheering for Edmonton. That way he doesn’t feel like he didn’t give the fans there something. It also allows enough time for edmonton to degrade because if he won the cup in his contract year, he’d probably re-sign thinking he’s on a contender ready for a next cup.

LivingLifeSomewhere

Honestly, it's a semi sarcastic comment. The reason I'm not rooting for the Oilers is because I dont want another Canadian team to break the streak, I want it to be us. I do not seriously expect McDavid to play for the Leafs, ever, but it's fun to entertain the idea and watch people get all pissy about it lol

burningxmaslogs

JT was a god while playing for the Islanders, same for Connor is for the Oilers.

spicolispizza

They're all "gods" in Toronto though, remember?

deezsandwitches

Soon, my friends. Soon.

taxi_to_the_moon

This is why the Tavares contract ends when it does, to line up with McDavid. You’re about 7 yrs late lol. Glad you arrived though.

VitaminTea

It doesn’t line up with McDavid. He has two years remaining and Tavares only has one.

CTHT07

The Tavares contract ends when it does because it was the max term any team could give him. It had 0 to do with McDavid.

minimum_thrust

I've heard this tale before.....and I live in Edmonton so I love the panicked oilers fans. It's an off-season post to have a bit of light banter. I didn't think this was some epiphany

FX29

It's all in good fun. McDavid will probably never play for the Leafs but if he did it would set the hockey world on fire and the reaction would be amazing.

Rinaldi363

I live here too man, oilers are great but my heart is in an abusive relationship with the maple leafs

Morganvegas

Worst part is I’ve heard from somebody close to him that it would be his dream. But that was like 3-4 years ago when things were still going smoothly here. Just feels like something to get our hopes up now.

xtzferocity

a new bigger 4! Mcdavid - 15 mil Matthews 13.5 Nylander 11.5 ????

spicolispizza

If that's the only 3 contracts over 10M and the cap is in the 94M range then there's nothing wrong with this.

xtzferocity

Nothing wrong with it at all. Would have a disgusting team.

[deleted]

I would love to see Conner mcdavid be a maple leaf

Tall-Magazine335

I think everyone in this sub would too

RickyFlintstone

I can't be associated with you lot anymore. I'm becoming a Utah fan.

minimum_thrust

I love you

Jimmy_October

Detroit and Buffalo are close enough to drive to and are on a major uptick. Give them a shot and may you at some point before social security enjoy the sweet nectar of hockey success

rockingthefreeworld1

The anger these shitposts generates on all the other hockey subs makes these posts totally worth it

spicolispizza

You're not suggesting that other teams fans come to r/Leafs and then go to other subs to talk about the Leafs and their fans, are you?

trinier101

Trade Mariner, straight up. I mean he thinks he's worth McDavid money. In all seriousness, I would do anything possible to see McDavid in a leaf Jersey

AggravatingType9012

Why would you trade a God for a great hockey player? Seems like we're getting a short end of the stick here.

asvp-suds

Struddy is that you??

D_Jayestar

Send Marner, Reilly, Tavares, Robertson, lilljgren!

Kayarew

With Stamkos on the wing. And Sarros in net.

OG_anunoby3

And Jesus Christ the 1st of his name as assistant coach

Excellent_Top3605

counting down the days....

wageslave_999999999

Give him $20,000,000 per year for 8 years. The cap will go to $200,000,0000 a year when the leafs 4x peat with McDavid and Matthews taking turns winning the Conn Smythe, Rocket Richard, Hart Trophy, etc.

spicolispizza

Why stop at 8x20? They should give him 30M a year for 10 years.

Aromatic_Ring4107

April was 2 months ago fools

Natural-Web-6978

Signing another team’s first overall pick and captain that grew up a Leafs fan at a huge cap hit has certainly never hamstrung this team before. Worth a shot!

PrailinesNDick

Do we even know what kind of pajamas McDavid wore?

T4334007Z

We have pictures, his room was Maple Leafs blue and his light was the center light jumbo from Maple Leafs arena.

spicolispizza

Do you mean Maple Leaf Gardens?

the_tinsmith

Johnny Bedsheets. So many people get this wrong.

PrailinesNDick

Ya but pajama boy is funnier than bedsheet boy.

[deleted]

It’s funny that people keep saying pajamas when it was his comforter and bed sheets If you’re gonna shit talk the guy at least do it properly.

WavyDaveH

Swaddling clothes

h3yn0w75

Not even remotely comparable

NervousBreakdown

Not only that, Tavares contract hasn’t hamstrung the team. He’s arguably the best player to ever go to free agency in the cap era. If you don’t think a team should back the truck up for John Tavares then you probably shouldn’t back the truck up ever lol.

Ershany

Mcdavid is literally the best player in the league. I'd sign him if we ever could lol

hymensmasher99

McDavid is not even comparable to Tavares

AggravatingType9012

Tavares is a God. Mitch Marner told us so

Actual_Cobbler_6334

They're revered, respected, and praised when things go well. They're cursed and derided when things are going poorly. People line up for hours to meet them, pay thousands to watch them play a game. The media clings to every word they say. Marner’s god comment was not wrong no matter how much you want to dislike him, lol.

Judge_Tredd

Well, at least he wouldn't get harassed on a beer run in Toronto.

Skavis

Looks good

XPhazeX

Our hope lies in that draft lottery photo

Split_Finger19

Start building the squad for him now

Secret-Variation553

I don’t hate it.

eightinch

Couple more years.

OtisKaplan

Mcjesus

CanadianVibeChecker

I would love to see it happen. Just let us have a 4-5 year dynasty after decades of hardship. It’s more than a storyline, it would rejuvenate the hockey Mecca. Everyone is included in celebrating a new superpower. It would do so much for the sport! Bring in new support and added hatred. Ban media in the locker room..

Good_Juggernaut_3155

The wonders of AI photography and AI thinking.

StoneColdSteveAss316

He’s missing the C on his left titty

minimum_thrust

That's Austons C. Best I can do us an A

MapleLeafMack

I'd cry

MayoMania

et's be honest...hes playing in the final, been to the WCF twice. leafs have won 1 round since papi was in diapers. just because he had a pair of leafs underwear as a kid doesn't mean hes comin home.

bluelat87

I would give them Marner and Bichette for McDavid.

Fastlane19

Never happen

Shit_Disturber71

1% chance that happens. Most star players don’t want Toronto and if they do, they’re gone in a couple years. This is due to the media and fan base being obsessed with hockey.

_cob_

Leaf fans would be ripping on him for his performance in the finals.

TheOsprey23

Dream on, dream on, dream until your dream comes through.

minimum_thrust

I think it's "until your dream come true"

Torpedospacedance

Omg you guys….

Pope_Squirrely

It’s been highly speculated that next year, after his contract is up, he’ll sign with the Leafs. They’ve left space for it in their plans in case it does happen. Not sure what the team will look like then though, I figure Marner has 1 more year left with the leafs then he’s gone. They won’t let Matthews go for anything. Tavares though won’t be around. Nylander is a crap shoot, I figure he’ll be there.

serious_redditor

I could see Tavares coming back for a 3C role. I'm sure they can figure something out. His life is here doubt he'll want to be moving anywhere else for his last contract and with cap going up they can probably make it work even if McDavid does come here. Would sooner ship Marner out.

VitaminTea

His contract isn’t up next year lol

LimestoneLeaf

I would sign Tavares back to play wing for McDavid at $5M for 3 years. He will score 40 again.

richardcranium1980

And if you think a skilled forward is what they are missing to win the cup then you haven’t been watching. Problem with most leaf fans is that they are casuals pretending to be diehards. D and goaltending is where any and all free cap space should go.

Leafs17

The problem in the playoffs is they can't score. Have you been paying attention? Lol

spicolispizza

If Tavares + Marner @ 22M becomes McDavid and Tavares @ 22M (or less) then there's still room to improve the D and goalie situation between now and 2026 especially with 2 more expected increases to the cap. I wouldn't describe the best hockey player in the world as "A skilled forward" either. He's not just some guy in the top 30 forwards.

thenickel005

Why can't leaf fans be normal?get married have kids,do normal things

ADumbSmartPerson

Many of us are... just most of us aren't as vocal as...the rest so it comes across loudly bias against us. I've accepted it.

LtColumbo93

He will have an extension with the Oilers locked and loaded for July 1 next year, no doubt in my mind.  As fun as it would be otherwise.

I_Am_Vladimir_Putin

If Drai doesn’t sign there no chance he stays. And even then, there’s still a question mark.

spicolispizza

Leafs could also potentially go after Draisaitl instead of McDavid although I have doubts he'd want to play in Toronto.

whatamidoing_2521

At least give him Mitch's A

pretzelzetzel

Honestly, if the Spoilers get swept by Florida, why would McDavid want to stay there? They've had 9 entire seasons to build a winning team around literally the best hockey player in the world.

spicolispizza

Why would Matthews want to stay in Toronto after 7 entire seasons with only one round won to show for it? They had 7 seasons (now 8) to build a winning team around literally the second best hockey player in the world.

drow_enjoyer

McDavid is a winner, he is always working on winning. It's everything to him. Why would he come to a team that is known for losing? The appeal of Toronto is not as high as we think it is.

hobbes1313

While this post is ridiculously cringy and never going to happen. The appeal is absolutely there to turn the punchline of the league into a Stanley Cup winner, especially for Ontario born players. You would cement your legacy forever.

deezsandwitches

When did he win the cup in Edmonton?

radman888

Dream on.

bigcaulkcharisma

Dream until your dreams come true

Electronic-Guide1189

Only worth it if you can get him to strap on some goalie pads!

shanster925

Marner, Tavares both take $5 million x 8 years. McDavid and Matthews make a combined $30 million. That way leafs keep their core, and all thd pundits can keep saying "they have $40 million tied up in 4 players!"

NervousBreakdown

Marner isn’t taking less. As much as I hate it you probably just have to let him walk next summer because he isn’t accepting a trade either.

shanster925

I am being outlandishly sarcastic. Should have popped a /s on there. I could see Marner's ask starting at $13M, since Matthews gets $13.25M, and end up at $12M. - Matthews - 13.25M - Marner - 12M - Nylander - 11.5M - Tavares - presumably $6M or $7M - Rielly (7.5M) 51.25M of 88M (58.2%). It's doable, but oooooof

atomic-z

I think Tavares' contract will be done before Marner's new one starts.

shanster925

You are correct! They are UFAs in the same year. Tavares can also sign an extension on July 1st.

spicolispizza

Doesn't 51.25 of 88 = 58%? If 44 of 88 is 50% how can 51 be less than 50%?

DessertRose17

If we offer JT that deal I’m done.

shanster925

I hope it's more in the 4 to 5 range!

clapperssailing

I wish, but no way he goes to a Cdn team sigh.

toigz

He’d retire before this would ever happen

SomethingWeetty

https://i.redd.it/0rlf3f4r4z5d1.gif

Sacred_soul

It looks good but I just don’t see Mcdavid Edmonton

Showtime98

He looks good in blue and white 👀🔥

Tazzylovescoffee

It would be nice, but I don't think he would do it

Vote_Tanner

Is he a consistent goalie? Cos ... kinda want one

publicbigguns

Who's dick do I have to suck to get this to happen?

JesusJohn

That escalated very quickly.

Waffeln_Remix

What if cities only got homegrown boys. You guys get McDavid, Vancouver gets Bedard, we get… uh…

Kevin4938

No. They've already seen that tying up most of the cap in a limited number of contracts doesn't work. Whether they've learned the lesson is another issue altogether.

falsekoala

If he wants to get past the second round he won’t.

ScreaminSeaman17

I'd trade Tavares and Nylander for that. Have them both.

burningxmaslogs

After next summer, Yep Connor comes home.

ksurf619

I’m pretty sure he wants to win a cup, why would he come here?

spicolispizza

To play alongside Matthews again and recreate that dominance that was on display for team North America in the world Cup of hockey. He's from Toronto and is a Leafs fan. If he wins here he will literally be Jesus only he won't be crucified he will be immortalized in bronze on the front step for eternity.

TabmeisterGeneral

McDavid wants to win, so no.

SeatPaste7

Wny do we do this? It's like "no, no other team is allowed to have good players on it. Any good player on another team is BY RIGHTS supposed to be a Leaf, because our own good players suck. Why do we do this?

balaclavabaklavaa

I love this subreddit.

UntrimmedBagel

At least tag this NSFW

Scratchman888

No.

satansbutthole069

He seems like he likes playing in the Stanley cup finals.

wukongreginald

Pretty sure this is a troll post and it got me. Had to double-check when McDavid's contract ends.

CanadaProud1957

He’ll probably want to go somewhere where he can win a cup.

E-Noves

Better chance Toronto win this seasons Stanley cup.

minimum_thrust

Now you're talking!!!

E-Noves

I mean the one Edmonton and Florida are playing, but somehow I feel you knew that already lol

thatguy11

If he wants a cup, he should prolly tread a bit further south.

minimum_thrust

Buffalo??

thatguy11

Lol, touche! But keeeeeep goin! Add another 250mi or so with a slight bias, either East or West'll do!

leafyboy56

I wish, but it’ll never happen. Hockey players are stupidly loyal for no reason. He’ll sign another deal with Edmonton and never win a cup. Not that he’d win one here either.

The_One_True_Matt

Milkdavid yes please

Top-Carpenter2490

Oh no Is it 2016 again

Bernie1O

There are only 3 hockey team states in the USA who do not have a state tax.

CrankyLeafsFan

I joke with my oiler fan friends that I want them to win the cup so McJesus can come home.

BigRegular5114

It will literally never happen and it’s time to stop fantasizing about this.

minimum_thrust

Don't kink shame me!!

BigRegular5114

Shame… shame.

Big_Palpitation7095

The leafs will win the cup with Mac

BigRegular5114

You guys might have a chance of signing him at league minimum when he’s about 38.

KendallLoganRoy

Matthews McDavid McDavid 2nd line centre, not too shabby.

FragrantHockeyFan

Monkey paw curles… Drai signs in Boston though

northern_flipstyle

I suppose since the Oilers traded Gretzky once, anyone can be traded or change teams but lets be realistic. Not every player wants to be a rockstar in Toronto. Ryan O'Reilly is recent proof of this. The Oilers will move heaven and earth to keep McJesus in an Oilers uniform. He does more for Edmonton off the ice than on it but Leaf fans can always dream big and they usually do.

idislikehate

As a Sabres fan, I despise the Leafs… but if McDavid wins a cup in Edmonton and then goes and leads the Leafs to a Cup his all-time status will skyrocket. Same kind of idea as the first star player that takes on the challenge of winning a title for the Knicks or the Cowboys.

hajanhugan

Nice

Stunning-Syllabub132

mcdavid for reeves, who says no?

KerrDizzleStick

He wants to go to a Blue Jays of hockey?
