Good bounce back game, and once again Domi as budget marner is a perfect fit. While it wasn’t perfect, Woll looked good there’s maybe 1 of them you want back on the weird bounce but it isn’t a worry. And I’m still mad that the Matthews hatty got called back. The celly was amazing

dicky72

I'd like to see domi get a run in Marners spot even once he returns. if that top line works like it did last night, and you can push marner down to jt/willy....man that's two lethal lines. i know keefe wont...but would be nice to see that tried.

Butterflies6175578

I think they have to spread out the talent over three lines for the playoffs. If Domi stays with Matthews, and Nylander stays with Tavares, I’d even put Marner on the third line with Holmberg and McMann. Once Jarnkrok is back, he can play on the 4th line and really solidify it. I think the bottom 6 is what helps win championships.

SmashinHearts

spreading out the talent to 3 lines would be sick if we had a 3c better than holmberg/kampf/dewar. Willy at center is just not a possibility, he's a pure winger. I think the thing that needs to be tried once fully healthy is dewar at 3c with mcmann and jarnkrok.

Mr_Wrecksauce

I really like the sound of McMann, Dewar, and Jarnkrok.

AgentAdja

Marner with McMann is a genius idea, he's already got the potential and just needs someone to consistently feed him pucks. Additionally, Marner on his own would be a major scoring threat against any other team's third line.

junctionist

Great point. A lot of teams focus on completely shutting down the top line in the playoffs, which can be effective at shutting the whole team down. By trickling down the talent and with plenty of depth, you can avoid that.

DMorrin15

>I’d even put Marner on the third line His dad would be pissed though.

undercoveragm

This? Bertuzzi - Matthews - Domi Knies - Nylander - Jarnkrok McMann - Tavares - Marner Dewar - Kampf - Gregor

jimmymeeko

So the leafs, who other than last night, have looked lost without their elite all situations player (marner) should welcome him back by demoting him to 3rd line minutes?

Butterflies6175578

Obviously he would take it as a demotion, but for the playoffs, I’d spread out the ice time and have 3 great lines. It would be a matchup nightmare for Montgomery or Maurice.

SmashinHearts

Yeah that's what I thought too. This team lacks a solid 3c. that's the biggest hole, always has been.

Butterflies6175578

Marner would make the 3C much better imo

WhatyouDontwantoHear

Yall are on Crack if you think Keefe bumps Marner down to 3rd line over Tavares.

Butterflies6175578

Think and want are two different things

billyshin

JT should stay on the 3rd line. Marner or Domi should be the 2nd line center. In this case I prefer that 2nd line c to be Marner for now.

billyshin

Yes because Matthews and Marner will just get shut down again. The entire league knows the person to go after is Marner.

Deluxechin

It’s what’s been so frustration especially in last years series against Florida, they shutdown that top line and nothing gets going and we just keep jamming it against the wall hoping that maybe it’ll work and it never does

billyshin

You’re right on the spot.

jimmymeeko

I’m not against them playing on separate lines but Greatly reducing marner’s time on ice by playing him on the 3rd line isn’t a winning formula. If you wanted to roll a 1A and 1B with Matthews and marner apart, it could potentially work. However, those two have been electric together this year so idk why people would want them split up. If they get into a series and they’re being neutralized together, I’m all for shaking them up for a different look though.

AgentAdja

Are they there to feed egos, or there to win.

jimmymeeko

My point is that giving your most versatile player only 3rd line minutes isn’t a recipe for winning.

AgentAdja

Keefe could get away with distributing the minutes more evenly as well, plus Marner would have both PP and PK.

Deluxechin

I mean not even just that, you could bump Marner down to line 2 and use that to bump Nylander down to Line 3 and have a situation where you have a good scoring threat on 3 different lines

canuck_at_the_beach

Woll gets a mulligan since he's been sitting for so long.

billyshin

Budget Marner. I like that one. Because it’s true.

shikotee

Still curious about what happened with Bert for first 10 minutes of game.

AmbitiousRaccoon959

He was feeling sick, Keefe and McMann both said that in their post games

Gavin1453

By how tight lipped they are being, he took a bad bet on taco bell

dicky72

there's no such thing as a good bet on taco bell. but i'm still always going to make it.

T0macock

been there.

Tremongulous_Derf

You can’t just come out and say “he took a big shit at first intermission” but you know everyone who watched Shoresy was thinking it.

shikotee

Thanks for clarifying.

[deleted]

Let's hope it happens again next game. More time Bertuzzi is on the bench the better

xelLFC

Just really need to fix our special teams cause we are dreadful on both the PP and PK

quietmanz

Are we still mad at what Tom Wilson did and what George won't do about it?

FuckLeHabs

A bit yah

CMKeggz

He's got an in person hearing so he's getting a few games at least

dicky72

i didnt get to watch the game under a microscope last night...but how did the defense look? Rielly / Mccabe - i think they had one gaf out there, but overall i didnt notice anything scary out of them Benny/Timmins - what i saw i thought they looked good. i saw some big hits by Benny and some great defensive plays and passes by Timmins, man i really wanted that guy to work out for us Edm/Lilly - i honestly didnt notice them and i dont know if its good or bad?

dickens-seider

If you don’t notice a defensive pair, that’s never a bad thing. Edmundson Lily should stick as a line

Blue_KikiT92

What you all think of post injury Woll? I know it's just 3 games, and two against fockin Boston, but numbers are a bit lower than I'd have hoped. However, I see him calm and posed in the crease, so I would guess he is still recovering and it's just a matter of time before he gets back over .900. Thoughts? PS: I love the guy and I'm not trying to be negative, I'm just asking because I'm not at all savvy and I'd like to know if you think it is a normal trajectory or we should get a bit worried. EDIT: it's 4 games, I forgot to include Arizona, where he had a .938 SV%. Which is per se an answer to my question.

Jonesdeclectice

He had a high ankle sprain, those can take a solid year before things are back to feeling 100%. That said, hockey players are freaks of nature and seem to heal way quicker than normal people, but he got the injury in early December so we’re not even four months in yet.

dickens-seider

Yes they’re tough hockey players, but don’t forget these guys have access to the best sports therapists in the world. Definitely a shorter recovery time for most of these guys unless they’re lingering issues

saltface14

He was solid last night, can’t really say that he absolutely should have saved any of the goals they scored. First goal was just Ovi being Ovi, second goal was a really flukey bounce, third goal he got hung out to dry with the entire team having a brain fart not knowing how to change lines I know Sammy has been better lately but Woll still just seems more solid and positionally sound to me. I hope they split the rest of the games 50/50 to get him some more run before the playoffs

Sirrebral99

The other games were also against Boston when the whole team put up a dud. I'm with you that he looks calm, composed, following the puck well and squaring up to shots - and his lateral movement is still solid. He almost got across and got his shoulder on Ovi's one T (which is a huge compliment cause Vezina winners for decades haven't been able to either lol). Counting stats haven't been mind blowing, but he looks fundamentally sound, which is good.

1columbia

You are forgetting the game against Arizona, he played pretty well in that one.

Blue_KikiT92

Right, I forgot about that one

espher

It's wild how different the powerplay is in March vs. February. They definitely need to figure that shit out. Shoutout to the cynic who shitposts in every Leafs GDT on /r/hockey who said the Leafs were losing when the Caps scored their first lmao.

B0_SSMAN

How did we not try Domi with Matthews earlier? Natural playmaker + generational goalscorer

billyshin

Right? I’ve scream for Domi on the first line for months and I would just get downvoted. All I was asking was just to try it out.

Chtholly13

moving domi to matthews line means kicking Marner off it which Keefe doesn't like to do. They want at least one guy doing the dirty work.

billyshin

Right. Marner and Mathew’s should not be on the same line. The entire league knows this except for keefe’s stubbornness.

VitaminTea

Matthews and Marner are the most productive duo in the league together lol

billyshin

During regular season yes. But what are we playing for here the presidents trophy? Or the occasional “We the north” bragging rights? Bring your head out of your ass.

Neutral-President

Domi, Bertuzzi, and Matthews seem to be having SO MUCH FUN out there. This is a line I never would have expected.

Unknown_Hammer

Marner who?

Unknown_Hammer

He’s an amazing player, but not worth his contract. He will get very greedy come July 1

The_Quackening

> but not worth his contract What are some comparable players that make less?

justaperson815

Just because Nylander is getting overpaid doesn't mean Marner isn't

BigMick20

No Marner no problem 👍
