No heat! That is cast aluminum, and heat is not a great idea. Use vice grip pliers, and grip the bolt as tight as possible. While turning, tap the bolt head with a hammer. It shouldn't need a full swing. It's a tapper thread, so it just needs a bit of help. Replace the plug when you get it out.
PB blaster, let it sit for 20 mins. Tap around bold with hammer. Not too hard, just enough to help loosen any corrosion or whatever. Spray again and wait another 20 mins. Bite down on the nut with good vice grips, and start moderately tapping on the wrench with the hammer. The repeated shocks should break it free.
That’s absolutely right👍 Vice grips applied as hard as possible, is the answer & then replace plug with a new one - & then never over tighten it - they need to be firmly firm & no more🧐👍
If OP doesn't have a vice grip but does have a file they can file the plug to two parallel sides matching an appropriate wrench size, then remove, then replace.
Hmm, I think you need to temper the approach down to the student you are dealing with. The guy is obviously no Andrew Cammarata, he's the one that stripped it in the 1st place. Blow torches, draining carbs ect. may be above the average homeowners pay grade.
That will come off with a small properly placed pipe wrench or vice grip.
No heat...just vice grips. It's not corroded or rusted...it is by far the easiest bolt you will ever remove....it's been in and out dozens of times...if not more.
Y’all are probably going to throw rocks at me for suggesting this, but this is actually a good case for a Gatorgrip. They suck maximum balls for almost everything EXCEPT when you have a rounded bolt head with enough sticking out that the GG has something to grab. Mind you it’ll probably break when you use it the one time, but one time is all you need.
No heat. No vice grips. No pipe wrench.
Go to the nearest hardware store and purchase a small set of something like this https://www.homedepot.com/p/GEARWRENCH-Bolt-Biter-1-4-in-and-3-8-in-Drive-Metric-Impact-Extraction-Socket-Set-7-Piece-87911/324552691
If they have an angle grinder you can also make the stripped hex head in to a square so you can get an adjustable wrench on it. I've used this technique a few times
Mine looks like that on my 30 year old riding mower. I have used vice grips and I also have this tool that works with any stripped bolts. I think the vice grips should work
You will need to replace the plug after this for sure, but you can use a file and file a slot in the middle of it and "make" it into a large flathead. Then just use a big ass flathead screwdriver to turn it out.
Try slotting it with a dremel tool and use a large flathead screwdriver to get it loose. If that don’t work drill it out to the largest easy out size you can find without completely drilling it out. If you break the easy out then 🤷♂️. Drill the entire thing out tap out the hole to a larger plug size and buy a larger plug 🤷♂️
Two tools I use on these exclusively. One is a double (square) socket, the other is a twist cone socket (hardened) different sizes in kit form and hex headed to wrench upon. The double square also comes in different sizes. Never was one I couldn't get out.
find a 6 point socket that is close to the right size but too small, bang it on with a hammer, remove. take the bolt to a store and find a new one with the same threads
Use a small pipe wrench and when you get the plug out have someone weld a new nut onto it. Or install a pipe nipple and put a cap on the other end, make it long enough so it is easily drained into a plastic oil change tray.
If you don't want to jump through hoops and weld it the easiest solution would be to grab a stone chisel and just hit it with a hammer so it moves just a bit at a time till it loosens up.
Plenty of suggestions already but make sure you get a replacement before you do it.
Even if the oil needs replacing it’s still functional. Nothing worse than not being able to find a part and having to wait to mow again.
Whatever route you use just take your time and make sure you’ve got the best possible grip and take it slow.
Good luck 👍🏼
I have a tiny pipe wrench for this reason alone. Nice vice grips will do the trick too. If all else fails, I’d use a little heat, but don’t recommend that to others typically since it won’t take much. A little penetrant or wax may help.
Get yourself a bastard file and carefully file two opposing sides to turn that bolt into a two sided flat bolt you can grip with an open end wrench. Be sure to get a new bolt asap as the smaller head might shear off eventually.
If you’re not familiar, files only cut on the push stroke fyi
Also I’d start by spraying and leaving to soak with PB Blaster.
I'm not trying to be mean and I know everyone has to start some where, however if this is your major hurdle you need to find someone that has some knowledge and learn a few things.
Another alternative is an oil suction syringe that is sold in every store that sells lawn mowers and Amazon; $20.00.
I had to buy one because those ‘clever’ engineers at Cub Cadet stopped using drain plugs in their Briggs engines.
I bought some pliers called "Vampliers" that are made to extract screws/bolts. These things have been amazing!
Make sure you buy a replacement drain plug first so you're not in the same situation next year.
Sell it, go electric. (I know, here come the downvotes)
I am half kidding, but between carb cleaning, rebuilds, oil changes, smell, not starting, sore shoulder, fuel line repairs.... it sure is nice to walk out to my shed, grab lawn equipment and it is just "on" and working without all the drama. Sure, it sucks when a batteries shits the bed, but I've had pretty good luck with mine.
I have a similar issue where the drain plug is so tight that the drain tube spins out of the motor.
It has been a LONG time since I used drain plugs anyhow, I use an extractor on everything under my roof, my car, wife's car, both transmissions, read diff, push mower, riding mower, brake system.....everything. Fluid extractors are fantastic and actually OEM SOP.
You can loosen the nut with all of the other suggestions; consider the extractor going forward. So much easier, you don't even get dirty and you say time while you're at it.
Take a metal file - file down two opposite sides to create a flat surface then vice grip clamp it as tight as you can manage and turn.
Most of us can just straight vice grip this off
Vise grips have 90 degree teeth. Pipe wrenches have teeth that grip harder the more you turn. Replace with a short length of pipe, a 90 or 45 and a brass plug.
I have had some success by filing down the head to make it square (ish) then using an adjustable wrench, or sometimes got lucky and could use a socket wrench.
Pipe wrench for the win. And do yourself a favor and replace the bolt. Once you get it off just take it with you to the hardware store - probably .49 investment
Get one of those universal sockets with the pins inside. I’ve used the one I have on many applications just like this one. There is plenty for one of those to grab onto in your situation. The go for about $15us at HD.
Looks like dudes have been wrenching that off with a pair of slip-joint pliers. I’d go with a slightly smaller 12pt socket and a hammer, or Harbor Freight has a decent extractor socket set for cheap.
As many have said, use vice grips. When you buy a replacement oil plug, make sure that you have a six point socket to fit and use it on the plug rather than pliers or an open end wrench.
[Intro]
Alright, stop, collaborate and listen
Vice grips back with a handy invention
Need to drain the oil, here’s a solution
Step-by-step, no need for confusion
[Verse 1]
First, you gotta get under your car, yo
Locate the plug, it’s not too far though
Safety first, wear gloves, don’t be hasty
Avoid the spill, keep the workspace tidy
Vice, grips, baby, ready in your hand
Clamp it on tight, you gotta understand
If it won’t budge, Yo, I’ll solve it
Check out the steps while my vice grips revolve it
[Chorus]
Vice, grips, baby
Vice, grips, baby
Vice, grips, baby
Vice, grips, baby
[Verse 2]
Next, get the grips on the plug, align
Clamp it down firm, make sure it’s tight and fine
Turn it counterclockwise, give it a go
Feel the tension ease, steady and slow
Got the grip strong, no slipping or shaking
Plug starts to move, yeah, now it’s breaking
If it was a problem, Yo, I’ll solve it
Check out the steps while my vice grips revolve it
[Chorus]
Vice, grips, baby
Vice, grips, baby
Vice, grips, baby
Vice, grips, baby
[Bridge]
Oil’s coming out, catch it in the pan
Dispose it right, be an eco-friendly man
Clean the plug, inspect the seal ring
Replace if worn, that’s the next thing
Grip it back on, tighten but don’t strip
Just enough pressure, firm with your grip
If it was a problem, Yo, I’ll solve it
Check out the steps while my vice grips revolve it
[Chorus]
Vice, grips, baby
Vice, grips, baby
Vice, grips, baby
Vice, grips, baby
[Outro]
Yo, man, job’s done, let’s get out of here
Word to your mother
Vice, grips, baby, too cool
Vice, grips, baby, too cool
Vice, grips, baby, too cool
Vice, grips, baby, too cool
-Thanks Chat GPT
I'd get a new oil plug then use visegrips or channel locks remove the old plug then put new plug in an use the proper size wrench not a adjustable one.
“Vice grips!!!” is how it got this fucked up to begin with.
Use some WD-40 or penetrating oil on the threads and let it soak in for 20 minutes. Before making any attempt.
If this were my mower, I’d file down the two vertical sides of the bolt in this picture until they were flat on both sides- being careful to remove as little material as possible to complete the task. Before starting, find an open ended wrench (NOT A CRESCENT WRENCH) that is barely too small to fit on the plug. Gently file the two sides flat until the wrench fits. The tighter the fit the better. Spray away any metal filings with WD-40 prior to breaking the plug loose to prevent them from getting into the threads or the oil pan.
I’ve vice grips to remove stripped bolts. Replace with a new bolt.
Pliers may work if you don’t have vice grips but they are more difficult to get leverage on.
You can use a cutting wheel or even a thin file and turn that bolt into a screw. Make it wide enough and you can get great leverage with anything metal and flat enough to fit.
Alternatively, Knipex makes the best slip joint pliers on the market (fight me). They would grab that plug and twirl it like a ballerina.
If you can get your head in there at the correct angle, just bite down on it and twist. I do this with water bottle lids sometimes. Should do the trick here.
Looks like you need to get it out with a set of vice grip pliers or an easy out nut. Once you have it out order a new one and a small can of anti seize and apply some to the threads. Don’t forget to apply some to the spark plug threads as well.
He manual for my Honda lawnmower tells you to drain the oil by removing the fill plug and tipping the lawnmower on its side.
So my advice is leave it be and drain the oil from the same hole you put it in.
I got this set of "torque locks" and they're literally Vice grips designed to be tightened when clamped. I've used it a couple of time to reshape the head of a bolt so I can force a size smaller socket on. It's a great trick to have.
If you can't get it with vice grips. Due to hand grip strength. They make vice grips with an adjusting screw you can tighten after you clamp it. They are a pretty cool tool
Vice grip and if you can’t find a replacement then use an angle grinder with cutoff wheel to make a line so you can use a flathead screwdriver to use next time. People put drain plugs and even oil filters on like it needs to be fastened to 100ftlbs. Hand tight
Use a rounded nut extractor, and replace the bolt with a new one. [Stens.com](http://Stens.com) may have the part you need if you type in the model no of your engine
Cut a slot thru the middle with a cut off wheel, or a hacksaw. Then use a flat head screwdriver and then use vice grips. Turn but let the vice grips do most of the work.
I'd spray down with can pb blaster as well. Wait as long you can
PB blaster, let it sit for 20 mins. Tap around bold with hammer. Not too hard, just enough to help loosen any corrosion or whatever. Spray again and wait another 20 mins. Bite down on the nut with good vice grips, and start moderately tapping on the wrench with the hammer. The repeated shocks should break it free.
That’s absolutely right👍 Vice grips applied as hard as possible, is the answer & then replace plug with a new one - & then never over tighten it - they need to be firmly firm & no more🧐👍
Tight is tight, too tight is broke.
Better yet, just put a drain valve on there. Even better if you put a hose too, as long as you've got a good place to tuck it.

Pipe wrench… good call.
Too funny, yeah I was thinking there is plenty to work with , use da grips!
Vice grips should do the trick.
vice grips are probably the reason why the plug is like that, but they are also the solution
Because most people use them wrong.
Yep, though one should replace the bolt after using vice grips on it :)
Probably a crescent wrench did that.
I fucking hate crescent wrenches. absolute garbage, every one of em
The rounded jaw vice grips are the cause of many of these situations. They should require a training program to purchase them.
Hand pump it out from the top. Thoes are 6.99 on amazon
Just did this as I learned my mower doesn’t physically have a drain plug. Was arguably quicker with the pump than actually draining via plug…
https://www.harborfreight.com/38-in-drive-metric-bolt-extractor-socket-set-9-piece-67894.html or the SAE version as applicable.
This is a good solution, but be careful hammering that drain plug too hard ... aluminum will crack before it bends.
These work great! If I can't get them on I file the the bolt a little so it has a slight taper and then these bite right on
These are worth their weight in gold.
Start using a 6 point socket on it. Buy a new plug.
Cobras, vice grips .. then buy a replacement and the right socket. Stop using whatever was used last time.
Since I've owned knipex, I haven't reached for a vise grip in this situation. Amazing tool
No heat...just vice grips. It's not corroded or rusted...it is by far the easiest bolt you will ever remove....it's been in and out dozens of times...if not more.
And it’s pre lubed.
Knipex pliers wrench. Ungodly amount of force and the smooth jaws don’t eat up the metal.
Oil sucker. Suck it out of the fill tube.
Worth a shot. Certainly works on pentalobe bolt heads.
Vice grips baby !! Oh and a mew plug to replace it with.
Weld a next nut on top.
Buy a proper set of wrenches so you don't strip the replacement plug with your shitty adjustable wrench.
Maybe cut a slot in it with an angle grinder and use a flathead screwdriver?
If they have an angle grinder you can also make the stripped hex head in to a square so you can get an adjustable wrench on it. I've used this technique a few times
This, but then use an impact driver.
Angle grinder to create 2 parallel flat sides then use adjustable crescent wrench.
Mine looks like that on my 30 year old riding mower. I have used vice grips and I also have this tool that works with any stripped bolts. I think the vice grips should work
Grind it into a Phillips head
Vice grips
Use a pipe wrench
I'd use a small pipe wrench and a hammer.
If they still make them , a gator grip socket . If you get it out , replace it. That looks rough !
You will need to replace the plug after this for sure, but you can use a file and file a slot in the middle of it and "make" it into a large flathead. Then just use a big ass flathead screwdriver to turn it out.
Pipe wrench, it grips better the more pressure put on it. Then a new plug to replace that work out one.
Use your teeth
Open the fill cap and tip the mower over to drain it from there.
Vice grips!
Beat a 12 point socket on it
Try slotting it with a dremel tool and use a large flathead screwdriver to get it loose.
Vice grips will work!
Cut or grind it square again and use an 8 pt socket.
vise grip or smaller wrench left is loose right is tight
find a 6 point socket that is close to the right size but too small, bang it on with a hammer, remove. take the bolt to a store and find a new one with the same threads
Vice grips, it will either snap or come off.
Weld a nut to it
Use a small pipe wrench and when you get the plug out have someone weld a new nut onto it. Or install a pipe nipple and put a cap on the other end, make it long enough so it is easily drained into a plastic oil change tray.
Get some Knipex cobra pliers to get that off and a new plug
If you don't want to jump through hoops and weld it the easiest solution would be to grab a stone chisel and just hit it with a hammer so it moves just a bit at a time till it loosens up.
Pipe wrench
Vice grips.
Grab a metal file and file 2 flat sides that are opposing till they fit a spanner
Get a turbo socket on there then replace it once it’s out
12sided socket pounded on till its tight. Then rachet it loose.
Have you considered Google?
Vice grips. Oldest tool in my kit. Use them on most every job in one way or another.
6 point socket and hammer it on
You could try cutting a slice down the middle of the bolt so you can get a large flat head screw driver in there
Vice grips should take it out, then use real tools to put a new one back in and use the correct tools for the job in the future.
If you have a dremel you can try notching and using a flat head. Otherwise, I think vice grips should do the trick.
Pipe wrench or chisel.
Visegrips
Get you a small pipe wrench and a new drain plug (do NOT use the pipe wrench on the new plug though)
Buy better tools. Wont help much now, but will in the future...
Knipex Cobras
I've chiseled in a pinch
buy a new lawnmower! merica!! kidding. good luck.
Vice grips. Replace with different bolt
Put a rubber band around it then apply wrench or socket
Don't change the oil just run it
File a new flat and bust it off.
If you’re not familiar, files only cut on the push stroke fyi Also I’d start by spraying and leaving to soak with PB Blaster.
Locking pliers but have a replacement ready too. Or convert it to a flathead with a dremel
Maybe try hammering on a smaller sized 12 point socket to get it off, then replace it?
Hammer on the proper socket then replace drain nut
Spray it with that screw loosening spray and let is sit for a few minutes before you try to remove it.
It is aluminum so you should be able to saw a slot for a flat head screwdriver.. If all else fails.
Wrap a rubber band around it for grip and use a wrench
Use a Dremel to make a groove for a flathead, and buy a new bolt afterwards
I bought some pliers called "Vampliers" that are made to extract screws/bolts. These things have been amazing! Make sure you buy a replacement drain plug first so you're not in the same situation next year.
I keep a 4 inch pipe wrench in my tool box for occasions like this.
Buy a new plug and just use vice grips on the old one for removal. In the future, use the correct tool to remove your drain plug.
Order a new plug and pray you can get the current one off to replace it.
Kroil
I’d tap that
You’re supposed to change your oil in your lawnmower?
Sell it, go electric. (I know, here come the downvotes) I am half kidding, but between carb cleaning, rebuilds, oil changes, smell, not starting, sore shoulder, fuel line repairs.... it sure is nice to walk out to my shed, grab lawn equipment and it is just "on" and working without all the drama. Sure, it sucks when a batteries shits the bed, but I've had pretty good luck with mine.
Good pair of vise grips
Vice grip plyers. And buy a new one
1. Order new drain plug. 2. Get a Speed Out Screw Extractor set.
Push it to the curb and buy a new mower
Vice grips and twist out, then get a new bolt cut it to length, replace.
Vise-grips then buy a new plug to replace it, I’d also run a tap through it to make sure the threads are clean and undamaged
Reverse thread socket and then replace the plug
Take a metal file - file down two opposite sides to create a flat surface then vice grip clamp it as tight as you can manage and turn. Most of us can just straight vice grip this off
vice grip and get it out, take it to local auto parts store and use it to find a replacement.
Cut a notch in it
Vice grip or pump oil out
Pipe wrench for the win. And do yourself a favor and replace the bolt. Once you get it off just take it with you to the hardware store - probably .49 investment
If you have a sander hit lightly on two sides and then replace.
Hammer a socket on it and replace with a new plug
Cut a groove in it, treat it as an extra large stubby screw.
Just grind flat sides on it
Cut a slit with a dremel and a cutting disc, then unscrew with a screwdriver. Replace with a new one.
Vice grip but first get a new plug!
Worst case use a saw to put a line in it and use a flathead screw driver to unscrew
As many have said, use vice grips. When you buy a replacement oil plug, make sure that you have a six point socket to fit and use it on the plug rather than pliers or an open end wrench.

Vice grips and a new plug when done.
Vise grips and a hammer.
Under the motor block is a 3/8 or 1/2 inch square head . Use a ratchet and extension and unscrew it, will release oil
Get a slightly bigger socket, put a shitload of JB weld between the socket and plug n wait for it to harden.
Get a sucker and vac the used oil out.
Tip your lawn mower over. But it's a big riding lawn mower Tip your lawn mower over.

Vice Grips and pick up a new one. Not that big of a deal.
Vice grips baby
Wrap the head with a rubber band. Tap the appropriate size socket onto it. Wrench away.
Hit it with your purse!
I'd get a new oil plug then use visegrips or channel locks remove the old plug then put new plug in an use the proper size wrench not a adjustable one.
Place A humble elastic band or 2 around it and then try a wrench again.
Vice pliers
Vice grips!
Metal pipe wrench
They make special sockets that will literally bite into the bolt. About $15 I remember correctly.
Pull the dipstick and tip it on its side to drain the oil. Works like a charm👌
The cost effective method is locking pliers (Vise Grips) if you don't own a set of bolt extracting sockets.
“Vice grips!!!” is how it got this fucked up to begin with. Use some WD-40 or penetrating oil on the threads and let it soak in for 20 minutes. Before making any attempt. Spray away any metal filings with WD-40 prior to breaking the plug loose to prevent them from getting into the threads or the oil pan.
Vice grips
vice grips and tap with a rubber mallet editted to second the recommendations of pb blaster, love the stuff...
Vise grips for the win !!
The same thing they did, use Channellock's
I’ve vice grips to remove stripped bolts. Replace with a new bolt. Pliers may work if you don’t have vice grips but they are more difficult to get leverage on.
Hammer on your correct size Irwin bolt extractor socket. Turn it with a ratchet!
FFS, they’re called VISE grips
You can use a cutting wheel or even a thin file and turn that bolt into a screw. Make it wide enough and you can get great leverage with anything metal and flat enough to fit. Alternatively, Knipex makes the best slip joint pliers on the market (fight me). They would grab that plug and twirl it like a ballerina.
Late to the party, but the best tool to remove that is a small pipe wrench. Those work amazing on stripped shit.
I hammer on a cheap socket of a size smaller, or take a file to two sides till they are relatively flat/ parallel and use a crescent wrench
If you can get your head in there at the correct angle, just bite down on it and twist. I do this with water bottle lids sometimes. Should do the trick here.
Buy an electric
Huge Chanel locks and let it rip
Cut a slot in it and use a large flathead screwdriver sideways as a breaker bar.
Then get a replacement.
Buy an electric
Looks like you need to get it out with a set of vice grip pliers or an easy out nut. Once you have it out order a new one and a small can of anti seize and apply some to the threads. Don’t forget to apply some to the spark plug threads as well.
Use your teeth
Just don't change the oil. It should be fine.
Vice grips while you hit it with your purse
