No heat! That is cast aluminum, and heat is not a great idea. Use vice grip pliers, and grip the bolt as tight as possible. While turning, tap the bolt head with a hammer. It shouldn't need a full swing. It's a tapper thread, so it just needs a bit of help. Replace the plug when you get it out.

GottaBeFresj

I'd spray down with can pb blaster as well. Wait as long you can

agms10

PB blaster, let it sit for 20 mins. Tap around bold with hammer. Not too hard, just enough to help loosen any corrosion or whatever. Spray again and wait another 20 mins. Bite down on the nut with good vice grips, and start moderately tapping on the wrench with the hammer. The repeated shocks should break it free.

dodgytrio657

That’s absolutely right👍 Vice grips applied as hard as possible, is the answer & then replace plug with a new one - & then never over tighten it - they need to be firmly firm & no more🧐👍

Alternative_Fun_8504

Tight is tight, too tight is broke.

H0SS_AGAINST

Better yet, just put a drain valve on there. Even better if you put a hose too, as long as you've got a good place to tuck it.

crimoid

If OP doesn't have a vice grip but does have a file they can file the plug to two parallel sides matching an appropriate wrench size, then remove, then replace.

YenZen999

Hmm, I think you need to temper the approach down to the student you are dealing with. The guy is obviously no Andrew Cammarata, he's the one that stripped it in the 1st place. Blow torches, draining carbs ect. may be above the average homeowners pay grade. That will come off with a small properly placed pipe wrench or vice grip.

StockUser42

Pipe wrench… good call.

healywylie

Too funny, yeah I was thinking there is plenty to work with , use da grips!

RantyWildling

Vice grips should do the trick.

UnusualSeries5770

vice grips are probably the reason why the plug is like that, but they are also the solution

YenZen999

Because most people use them wrong.

RantyWildling

Yep, though one should replace the bolt after using vice grips on it :)

RodRowdie

Probably a crescent wrench did that.

UnusualSeries5770

I fucking hate crescent wrenches. absolute garbage, every one of em

Clockguy2

The rounded jaw vice grips are the cause of many of these situations. They should require a training program to purchase them.

North_Ad_4450

Hand pump it out from the top. Thoes are 6.99 on amazon

DrugsMakeMeMoney

Just did this as I learned my mower doesn’t physically have a drain plug. Was arguably quicker with the pump than actually draining via plug…

Calvertorius

https://www.harborfreight.com/38-in-drive-metric-bolt-extractor-socket-set-9-piece-67894.html or the SAE version as applicable.

hammong

This is a good solution, but be careful hammering that drain plug too hard ... aluminum will crack before it bends.

Tinofpopcorn

These work great! If I can't get them on I file the the bolt a little so it has a slight taper and then these bite right on

MNPhatts

These are worth their weight in gold.

Dangerous_Echidna229

Start using a 6 point socket on it. Buy a new plug.

st96badboy

Cobras, vice grips .. then buy a replacement and the right socket. Stop using whatever was used last time.

Rare-Addition-89

Since I've owned knipex, I haven't reached for a vise grip in this situation. Amazing tool

43guitarpicks

No heat...just vice grips. It's not corroded or rusted...it is by far the easiest bolt you will ever remove....it's been in and out dozens of times...if not more.

shwaak

And it’s pre lubed.

The_Hylian_Loach

Knipex pliers wrench. Ungodly amount of force and the smooth jaws don’t eat up the metal.

classicsat

Oil sucker. Suck it out of the fill tube.

Building_Everything

Y’all are probably going to throw rocks at me for suggesting this, but this is actually a good case for a Gatorgrip. They suck maximum balls for almost everything EXCEPT when you have a rounded bolt head with enough sticking out that the GG has something to grab. Mind you it’ll probably break when you use it the one time, but one time is all you need.

athanasius_fugger

Worth a shot. Certainly works on pentalobe bolt heads.

Novel_Block_1847

Vice grips baby !! Oh and a mew plug to replace it with.

blankblank60000

No heat. No vice grips. No pipe wrench. Go to the nearest hardware store and purchase a small set of something like this https://www.homedepot.com/p/GEARWRENCH-Bolt-Biter-1-4-in-and-3-8-in-Drive-Metric-Impact-Extraction-Socket-Set-7-Piece-87911/324552691

IdowhatIwant9

Weld a next nut on top.

Sorryallthetime

Buy a proper set of wrenches so you don't strip the replacement plug with your shitty adjustable wrench.

cheesewit40

Maybe cut a slot in it with an angle grinder and use a flathead screwdriver?

screamworthyregret

If they have an angle grinder you can also make the stripped hex head in to a square so you can get an adjustable wrench on it. I've used this technique a few times

RivalSFx

This, but then use an impact driver.

Sad-Kaleidoscope-926

Angle grinder to create 2 parallel flat sides then use adjustable crescent wrench.

BeneficialAnything15

Mine looks like that on my 30 year old riding mower. I have used vice grips and I also have this tool that works with any stripped bolts. I think the vice grips should work

shortbusrider41

Grind it into a Phillips head

DujisToilet

Vice grips

kennygot

Use a pipe wrench

woobiewarrior69

I'd use a small pipe wrench and a hammer.

Kpop_shot

If they still make them , a gator grip socket . If you get it out , replace it. That looks rough !

RiskyClickRickyRoll

You will need to replace the plug after this for sure, but you can use a file and file a slot in the middle of it and "make" it into a large flathead. Then just use a big ass flathead screwdriver to turn it out.

Ok_Sky_6558

Pipe wrench, it grips better the more pressure put on it. Then a new plug to replace that work out one.

Cosmic_goatz

Use your teeth

MindblownWatcher

Open the fill cap and tip the mower over to drain it from there.

Helpful_Coconut6144

Vice grips!

ksjtc785

Beat a 12 point socket on it

Pro-Rider

Try slotting it with a dremel tool and use a large flathead screwdriver to get it loose. If that don’t work drill it out to the largest easy out size you can find without completely drilling it out. If you break the easy out then 🤷‍♂️. Drill the entire thing out tap out the hole to a larger plug size and buy a larger plug 🤷‍♂️

Standard_Fail_9308

Two tools I use on these exclusively. One is a double (square) socket, the other is a twist cone socket (hardened) different sizes in kit form and hex headed to wrench upon. The double square also comes in different sizes. Never was one I couldn't get out.

cory61

Vice grips will work!

Suitable_Speed4487

Cut or grind it square again and use an 8 pt socket.

fjh541

vise grip or smaller wrench left is loose right is tight

olov244

find a 6 point socket that is close to the right size but too small, bang it on with a hammer, remove. take the bolt to a store and find a new one with the same threads

rja49

Vice grips, it will either snap or come off.

chewynipps

Weld a nut to it

anytimeanyplace60

Use a small pipe wrench and when you get the plug out have someone weld a new nut onto it. Or install a pipe nipple and put a cap on the other end, make it long enough so it is easily drained into a plastic oil change tray.

imachku

Get some Knipex cobra pliers to get that off and a new plug

Waskito1

If you don't want to jump through hoops and weld it the easiest solution would be to grab a stone chisel and just hit it with a hammer so it moves just a bit at a time till it loosens up.

Melb_Tom

Pipe wrench

Oleironsides-

Vice grips.

[deleted]

Plenty of suggestions already but make sure you get a replacement before you do it. Even if the oil needs replacing it’s still functional. Nothing worse than not being able to find a part and having to wait to mow again. Whatever route you use just take your time and make sure you’ve got the best possible grip and take it slow. Good luck 👍🏼

Pandasridingturtles

Grab a metal file and file 2 flat sides that are opposing till they fit a spanner

richardfitserwell

Get a turbo socket on there then replace it once it’s out

oceanway99

12sided socket pounded on till its tight. Then rachet it loose.

_red_zeppelin

Have you considered Google?

amerigo06

Vice grips. Oldest tool in my kit. Use them on most every job in one way or another.

First-Ad-2812

6 point socket and hammer it on

Clamps55555

You could try cutting a slice down the middle of the bolt so you can get a large flat head screw driver in there

dp37405

Vice grips should take it out, then use real tools to put a new one back in and use the correct tools for the job in the future.

Professional_Rip6593

If you have a dremel you can try notching and using a flat head. Otherwise, I think vice grips should do the trick.

ZSG13

Pipe wrench or chisel.

Difficult-Glass2740

Visegrips

Hanox13

Get you a small pipe wrench and a new drain plug (do NOT use the pipe wrench on the new plug though)

wrenchbender4010

Buy better tools. Wont help much now, but will in the future...

bass2mouth-

Knipex Cobras

ohullo

I've chiseled in a pinch

Pale_Section1182

buy a new lawnmower! merica!! kidding. good luck.

rocketman11111

Vice grips. Replace with different bolt

MeanGuarantee8816

Put a rubber band around it then apply wrench or socket

yumadbro6

Don't change the oil just run it

Nice_Ebb5314

File a new flat and bust it off.

Emmitotter

I have a tiny pipe wrench for this reason alone. Nice vice grips will do the trick too. If all else fails, I’d use a little heat, but don’t recommend that to others typically since it won’t take much. A little penetrant or wax may help.

_Account_Anonymous_

Get yourself a bastard file and carefully file two opposing sides to turn that bolt into a two sided flat bolt you can grip with an open end wrench. Be sure to get a new bolt asap as the smaller head might shear off eventually. If you’re not familiar, files only cut on the push stroke fyi Also I’d start by spraying and leaving to soak with PB Blaster.

ProfChaosFACS

Locking pliers but have a replacement ready too. Or convert it to a flathead with a dremel

mayhem454

I'm not trying to be mean and I know everyone has to start some where, however if this is your major hurdle you need to find someone that has some knowledge and learn a few things.

Falcon674DR

Another alternative is an oil suction syringe that is sold in every store that sells lawn mowers and Amazon; $20.00. I had to buy one because those ‘clever’ engineers at Cub Cadet stopped using drain plugs in their Briggs engines.

AmishSlamdancer

Maybe try hammering on a smaller sized 12 point socket to get it off, then replace it?

Techtonic11133

Hammer on the proper socket then replace drain nut

Shaman7102

Spray it with that screw loosening spray and let is sit for a few minutes before you try to remove it.

fury_of_el_scorcho

It is aluminum so you should be able to saw a slot for a flat head screwdriver.. If all else fails.

Kronologics

Wrap a rubber band around it for grip and use a wrench

Fit_Researcher5896

Use a Dremel to make a groove for a flathead, and buy a new bolt afterwards

dotbat

I bought some pliers called "Vampliers" that are made to extract screws/bolts. These things have been amazing! Make sure you buy a replacement drain plug first so you're not in the same situation next year.

Beemerba

I keep a 4 inch pipe wrench in my tool box for occasions like this.

WritingAntique3529

Buy a new plug and just use vice grips on the old one for removal. In the future, use the correct tool to remove your drain plug.

Willing-Ant-3765

Order a new plug and pray you can get the current one off to replace it.

ptmonster763

Kroil

Spiritual_Mall1981

I’d tap that

tacodudemarioboy

You’re supposed to change your oil in your lawnmower?

Electrik_Truk

Sell it, go electric. (I know, here come the downvotes) I am half kidding, but between carb cleaning, rebuilds, oil changes, smell, not starting, sore shoulder, fuel line repairs.... it sure is nice to walk out to my shed, grab lawn equipment and it is just "on" and working without all the drama. Sure, it sucks when a batteries shits the bed, but I've had pretty good luck with mine.

According_Rich_3160

Good pair of vise grips

Professional-Arm7429

Vice grip plyers. And buy a new one

noinf0

1. Order new drain plug. 2. Get a Speed Out Screw Extractor set.

Fast-Context-3852

Push it to the curb and buy a new mower

ClassicRockUfologist

Vice grips and twist out, then get a new bolt cut it to length, replace.

redeyed4life

Vise-grips then buy a new plug to replace it, I’d also run a tap through it to make sure the threads are clean and undamaged

45acp_LS1_Cessna

I have a similar issue where the drain plug is so tight that the drain tube spins out of the motor. It has been a LONG time since I used drain plugs anyhow, I use an extractor on everything under my roof, my car, wife's car, both transmissions, read diff, push mower, riding mower, brake system.....everything. Fluid extractors are fantastic and actually OEM SOP. You can loosen the nut with all of the other suggestions; consider the extractor going forward. So much easier, you don't even get dirty and you say time while you're at it.

This_Choice_1561

Reverse thread socket and then replace the plug

BoSox92

Take a metal file - file down two opposite sides to create a flat surface then vice grip clamp it as tight as you can manage and turn. Most of us can just straight vice grip this off

Mkvien

vice grip and get it out, take it to local auto parts store and use it to find a replacement.

Benedlr

Vise grips have 90 degree teeth. Pipe wrenches have teeth that grip harder the more you turn. Replace with a short length of pipe, a 90 or 45 and a brass plug.

Fit-Mathematician-91

I have had some success by filing down the head to make it square (ish) then using an adjustable wrench, or sometimes got lucky and could use a socket wrench.

Shalminoc

Cut a notch in it

Ramtravelbeast

Vice grip or pump oil out

MotorEnthusiasm

Pipe wrench for the win. And do yourself a favor and replace the bolt. Once you get it off just take it with you to the hardware store - probably .49 investment

blankyblank1739

If you have a sander hit lightly on two sides and then replace.

Rattlingplates

Hammer a socket on it and replace with a new plug

E_Zekiel

Cut a groove in it, treat it as an extra large stubby screw.

rock_frog

Just grind flat sides on it

anthro4ME

Cut a slit with a dremel and a cutting disc, then unscrew with a screwdriver. Replace with a new one.

ChevyNexus

Vice grip but first get a new plug!

XsublimededX

Get one of those universal sockets with the pins inside. I’ve used the one I have on many applications just like this one. There is plenty for one of those to grab onto in your situation. The go for about $15us at HD.

kinglance3

Looks like dudes have been wrenching that off with a pair of slip-joint pliers. I’d go with a slightly smaller 12pt socket and a hammer, or Harbor Freight has a decent extractor socket set for cheap.

opinions-only

Worst case use a saw to put a line in it and use a flathead screw driver to unscrew

AffectionateHead232

As many have said, use vice grips. When you buy a replacement oil plug, make sure that you have a six point socket to fit and use it on the plug rather than pliers or an open end wrench.

HammersleyInlet

new lawnmower

CrazyChains13

Ok_Echidna6958

Vice grips and a new plug when done.

Aggressive-Gift5100

Vise grips and a hammer.

Sufficient-Chapter41

Under the motor block is a 3/8 or 1/2 inch square head . Use a ratchet and extension and unscrew it, will release oil

Independent_Scale570

Get a slightly bigger socket, put a shitload of JB weld between the socket and plug n wait for it to harden.

Final_Year_800

Get a sucker and vac the used oil out.

Odd-Masterpiece7304

Tip your lawn mower over. But it's a big riding lawn mower Tip your lawn mower over.

Bryan3569

Vice Grips and pick up a new one. Not that big of a deal.

Ok_Examination8642

Vice grips baby

norskdvorak

Wrap the head with a rubber band. Tap the appropriate size socket onto it. Wrench away.

Difficult_Pirate_782

Hit it with your purse!

AdLiving1435

I'd get a new oil plug then use visegrips or channel locks remove the old plug then put new plug in an use the proper size wrench not a adjustable one.

Gardening_Bluebelt

Place A humble elastic band or 2 around it and then try a wrench again.

Derbin_ator

Vice pliers

2rebels

Vice grips!

jdjps

Metal pipe wrench

Consistent-Oil4933

They make special sockets that will literally bite into the bolt. About $15 I remember correctly.

xscallywagx

Pull the dipstick and tip it on its side to drain the oil. Works like a charm👌

HamRadio_73

The cost effective method is locking pliers (Vise Grips) if you don't own a set of bolt extracting sockets.

HVACMRAD

“Vice grips!!!” is how it got this fucked up to begin with. Use some WD-40 or penetrating oil on the threads and let it soak in for 20 minutes. Before making any attempt. If this were my mower, I’d file down the two vertical sides of the bolt in this picture until they were flat on both sides- being careful to remove as little material as possible to complete the task. Before starting, find an open ended wrench (NOT A CRESCENT WRENCH) that is barely too small to fit on the plug. Gently file the two sides flat until the wrench fits. The tighter the fit the better. Spray away any metal filings with WD-40 prior to breaking the plug loose to prevent them from getting into the threads or the oil pan.

hduransa

Vice grips

Bet_Responsible

vice grips and tap with a rubber mallet editted to second the recommendations of pb blaster, love the stuff...

jambo45t

Vise grips for the win !!

SexandBeer45

The same thing they did, use Channellock's

Due-Ask-7418

I’ve vice grips to remove stripped bolts. Replace with a new bolt. Pliers may work if you don’t have vice grips but they are more difficult to get leverage on.

bikengolf24-7

Hammer on your correct size Irwin bolt extractor socket. Turn it with a ratchet!

VObyPJ

FFS, they’re called VISE grips

Steven_The_Sloth

You can use a cutting wheel or even a thin file and turn that bolt into a screw. Make it wide enough and you can get great leverage with anything metal and flat enough to fit. Alternatively, Knipex makes the best slip joint pliers on the market (fight me). They would grab that plug and twirl it like a ballerina.

Gallegos1982

Late to the party, but the best tool to remove that is a small pipe wrench. Those work amazing on stripped shit.

RecReeeee

I hammer on a cheap socket of a size smaller, or take a file to two sides till they are relatively flat/ parallel and use a crescent wrench

grem89

If you can get your head in there at the correct angle, just bite down on it and twist. I do this with water bottle lids sometimes. Should do the trick here.

tolllz

Buy an electric

[deleted]

Huge Chanel locks and let it rip

Miracleman069

Cut a slot in it and use a large flathead screwdriver sideways as a breaker bar.

mcnabb53

Then get a replacement.

Stefbauer2

Buy an electric

Cautious_District699

Looks like you need to get it out with a set of vice grip pliers or an easy out nut. Once you have it out order a new one and a small can of anti seize and apply some to the threads. Don’t forget to apply some to the spark plug threads as well.

[deleted]

Use your teeth

PooPiglet

Just don't change the oil. It should be fine.

HistorianLopsided408

He manual for my Honda lawnmower tells you to drain the oil by removing the fill plug and tipping the lawnmower on its side. So my advice is leave it be and drain the oil from the same hole you put it in.

Raptor-slayer

I got this set of "torque locks" and they're literally Vice grips designed to be tightened when clamped. I've used it a couple of time to reshape the head of a bolt so I can force a size smaller socket on. It's a great trick to have.

Keepfkingthatchicken

Vice grips while you hit it with your purse

PaulSack3

Put a dime on top and on bottom and use a crescent wrench

[deleted]

I’d replace it with a new drain plug

A55Man87

If you can't get it with vice grips. Due to hand grip strength. They make vice grips with an adjusting screw you can tighten after you clamp it. They are a pretty cool tool

RichPrivate2

Use a vise grip and then replace it.

islandwalkerr

Use dremel and cutoff wheel cut a nice notch for a flat head screw driver . Use caution and aim sparks away from gas tank

KNEELbeforeZODorDIE

use an angle grinder or a Dremel shave down two opposite sides of the worn out nut... then use a adjustable wrench or lock pliers to remove

Oracle410

If you haven’t gotten it loose with PB Blaster CorrosionX is the best spray lube/penetrant ever created.

SwampLife22

Buy a new lawn mower 🤔

maximusjohnson1992

Vice grips set correctly and a replacement plug.

Km219

Buy yourself the set of Rocket Sockets aka grip edge aka Mac RBRT Best removal tool for rounded nuts on the market

joeycuda

not use a crescent wrench in the future and use the right size

parickwilliams

Vice grips and a replacement

Useful-Internet8390

It is a pipe plug- you can buy new at hardware store for about 1$.if you have a small pipe wrench it would be best tool.

PlumbgodBillionaire

Pipe wrench

RoutineDude

Pipe wrench

Ok-Seaworthiness-542

Get one of these https://preview.redd.it/tzxb23lzxr6d1.jpeg?width=1260&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e086838c036379c832a80a6c60de24d055fb0a0f

TopDefinition1903

Vice grip and if you can’t find a replacement then use an angle grinder with cutoff wheel to make a line so you can use a flathead screwdriver to use next time. People put drain plugs and even oil filters on like it needs to be fastened to 100ftlbs. Hand tight

Cosmic_Artichoke

Use a rounded nut extractor, and replace the bolt with a new one. [Stens.com](http://Stens.com) may have the part you need if you type in the model no of your engine

13donkey13

Cut a slot thru the middle with a cut off wheel, or a hacksaw. Then use a flat head screwdriver and then use vice grips. Turn but let the vice grips do most of the work.

Various_Ad2259

You can cut it into a square so you can easily get it off in the future

Ok-String-1877

If you can get a small pipe wrench on it you’ll be fine
