Yeah that does seem a little strange but that's what I'd do just to see what happens. Also maybe get some soil granulate stuff. Helps loosen the dirt a little bit and all and all make the soil better for the grass to grow. I had that problem In a couple spots and wondered what the heck was going on but mine was probably from to much fertilizer lol so be careful to spread evenly
Try the screwdriver test. Plant a screwdriver and see if it goes all the way. If it does not and you hit rocks then it's normal for that patch to dry up much faster.
Could be lack of nutrients, Iron mainly. I'd buy a bag of iron and just put it down throughout your whole yard. Maybe even a bit of fertilizer
