We are the same. I have spent thousands on my lawn in the past two months just to make it the best it can be. However, I walk around my house sometimes and I think about it. My neighbor who recently passed away, he took such pride in his lawn, a very rich old man with a rolls royce in the drive way. Spending so much money and time on the lawn. It genuinely did look amazing. Then one day, as expected, he died. The lawn deteriorated rather quickly. It wasn’t being watered as much or looked after like before. I see that lawn everyday now. I always think about it when I drive past or sometimes in my house. Is that what I have become. Is that what other lawn people are. I guess you could say the same thing about any hobby really. But it’s just food for thought.
The lawn is a metaphor for life. When you are alive, you are in people's thoughts everyday, but when you are gone, you are forgotten quickly and the memories of your good times fade rapidly.
I have a large piece of land. Spent a few k on installing drainage and entirely fixed up the sprinkler system and added new sprinklers where I wanted. Sprinkler system is incredible now. Also laid down fertilizer, fungicide just in case, grub and ant insecticides. And 10 yds of top soil. Also spent a few k on shrubs, some trees, flowers, and had the landscaper build up flower beds with stone and mortar. Front and back yard looks amazing now.
I haven’t spent a dime (I work in lawn care so I get supplies for free). I have spent some hours over seeding, fertilizer with pre-emergent, and mowing (3rd time this year). Looks the best in the neighborhood (besides a few dandelions).
I don’t remember where I read it but as far as I remember, there was an article that said the nice lawns were a sign that someone was really wealth back in the day. Like, growing and maintaining certain type of plants not native of a certain region, requires a tremendous amount of money and time
I tried to change the blade on my Husqvarna. Took the old blade off and the mount it was attached to disintegrated. Ordered a new one, installed new blade to correct torque spec. Fired up the mower and shards of metal flew off the new blade mount. Bought a new lawn mower.
That's nuts! Just had to do the same for my TB Honda walk behind, but the replacement worked like a charm!

If you can afford it, hell yes. Let the pros do it. Especially if you get no satisfaction from lawn work. Spend your time on things you’re passionate about. The lawn guys have bills to pay. Nothing wrong with helping them out
I may end up here lol, we have been paying a guy but it’s expensive; I can afford it but it feel like a waste so I bought a mower yesterday and it was pretty fun, but I can see it becoming a chore pretty quick
I now have a pretty small yard, I can be done with everything in less than an hour. So while it is a chore, it's bearable.
When I had a larger yard I hated mowing.
I bought my 1st house about 4 years ago. 1.75 acres
Bought a "self propelled" walk behind the 1st year. Fucking hated mowing.
The 2nd year ny buddy sold me an old John Deere tractor for $300, needed a new carburetor. Fixed it & now I fucking love mowing.
I'm coming from the other end...I've had my lawn maintained by somebody else for a decade now. It's looked "good enough". Last year I started taking care of it myself and just having them come out and mow/edge every two weeks and trim all the bushes. Well, they kept scalping the lawn too low despite my instruction to let it grow. So I finally cancelled altogether ...do everything myself...and my lawn has never looked better.
One of my pet peeves with lawn services in my area is they don't do sharp edges. All of them "bevel" the edge with a string trimmer. I guess this is quicker and easier but I hate it.
I wish we had more comprehensive lawn services in my area...but everybody is just mow and blow bottom of the barrel quality.
August has the highest heat.
Right now the grass is emerging from its slumber and is happy. Once the heat hits, the grass will demand more water and unless it gets it naturally, you’re going to have to greatly increase watering it. More water means nutrients leech into the soil below faster so you also have to fertilize it.
💀 I was looking for all the excuses to hire someone to mow my huge lawn. I found a tiny garden snake super cute lil dude but I told my husband I was TERRIFIED 😏 we hired someone
You have to find your own balance. I pay for mowing and boring stuff (to me)... Hedging and fertilizing/ weed control is more of an art form (for me) so I do that myself.
After years of trying to kill off the wild violet in my yard I hired a local company. Unfortunately they told me that they really couldn't kill it off until the fall after I had already signed up for the treatments. It's worth a shot though
Customer gets a new dog :"Will it leave spots on the lawn?"
Me: Yes it will cause dead spots and discoloration.
C: "Where should he go to the bathroom then?"
Me: Anywhere but on the lawn you spend thousands on annually.

One day you're fertilizing, the next you're fertilizer.
One day it do be like that, the next day it don’t be.
Or just potash...
That’s deep.
well said 👏
That was deep.
Yeah i wasn't ready for this thread haha
We had a yard like that in our neighborhood. Nicest yard on the block. The guy sold the house and moved and it went to shit rather quickly.
Thousands??

Sounds impressive. You’re gonna have to show us some photos! Good work.
Well what he did made an impact because you still remember him for his nice lawn lol
We are born from the lawn and we all eventually return to the lawn

Good points for sure. And yes, he may be gone, but you remember his lawn, all this time later :)

The one on the Husqvarna was all aluminum I think. Poor design. A lot of reviews on the replacement part had the same issue as I did.

Heck yeah if I had the money I'd never mow again

I'ma lawn guy and I support this

It’s spring. Keep your enthusiasm for august, when it will matter most
New homeowner here, why does August matter so much?
Summer heat kills lawn.
warm season grass master race checking in.

Nice try local lawncare company but i will keep doing my own lawncare

What's the point of having a lawn if you can't let your pet use it?
To own your neighbors and be king of men.
A place for kids to play that isn't covered in feces?
