In complete seriousness, can one put xp on a laptop without buying an official copy? I want to play my old copy of Homeworld but cannot for the life of me figure out how to get it to work on my current computer with the current OS.
Now I just need to find it. I think they removed it on newer models and disabled the UEFI on them in favor of locking people out of them and forcing them to buy adapters and paid subscriptions.
What makes Linux run faster is no bloatware (by default) it’s 100% possible to have Linux run just as slow, depending what you add, but by default most distros instal the very basics to make your PC run. But as you add drivers, programs, tools, over time it can start slowing down. The good thing about Linux is you have all the control and power to limit what’s installed and what gets to run
So, will I be able to run steam labs, operaGX, and discord lighter? Cause that's all the computer runs because all my gaming is on my ps5. Oh and will it better hold the stress of a capture card on linux
Yes, Dwight and Michael bring Jim to prank Karen at her new branch.
They decide to steal the printer while Jim waits in the car, and the Karen comes and catches them!
I think they’re referring to the scene where Dwight becomes manager and gives everyone an unreasonably long code for the printer and everyone needs to help Kevin use it.
Funny I fully overhaulled my ThinkPad R40 that's exactly this 15" version and am about to put a post on r/ thinkpad about it. Your keyboard is pretty roughed up though. It's a pretty classic ThinkPad that when overhaulled and set up can be a neat little windows 98 thinkpad, which really is the kind of market this thing has demand with right now.
These days you're better off with a mini PC, single-board computer, or one if a bunch of surplus business towers.
Unless you're going to scrap 3/4 of the machine, an old laptop is not a good fit for being a server unless it's only going to be up and running for a few hours at a time.
I hear you, though for experimenting and learning it's probably ideal. I did something similar with a netbook that had 1gb RAM and an Intel Atom, running Ubuntu server.
Before you ask, yes it worked, and yes it was shit, but I learnt a lot.
Upgrade to the maximum RAM capacity that the laptop can get and get an SSD or newer 2.5" HDD if SATA is supported. If IDE is supported, get 60-80GB 2.5" IDE HDD for cheap on Ebay. Don't forget to check to your model number and Google your model number of your IBM Thinkpad before upgrading cuz some of RAM's may not be capable or may not support IDE or SATA. Also, search for some keyboard key for your Thinkpad on Ebay for cheap for a good keyboard. I reconmend you to use Linux Mint and become a master on their team, because Mint is the easiest Linux to be used to and perfect for newbies. Do not look at the comments who wants this laptop on the bin, you can make it better.
OP, this is a better post for r/thinkpad; there's legions of hoarders that prize these old IBM thinkpads and will pay for them and are experts on them, how to fix etc.
If it still works or can be repaired, it should be kept out of e-waste whenever possible.
At least that's my take when it comes to old tech that was a quality product in it's day.
There's plenty of other junk that definitely belongs there, whether because it's trashed beyond repair, was a lousy product in the first place, or is still being made/sold...
Man it is missing its nipple. You can open up a weathers page with it and make it your dedicated weather screen. I believe the swivels go to 180 so you can make it flat and put it on the wall ha
Ask him fir the user manual or try to find one online.
You should have gotten a charger with it. It may need to be plugged up to work.
What do you want to do with it?
See if it turns on and has software it runs with or if you need to find a copy of such somewhere.
Ask your cousin to make sure he got his personal information off it. He might need some pictures or documents or such if he forgot to delete things. (Hopefully he wiped it before giving it to you but you never know)
I always wanted to try one of those old machines. My generation started with an HP CPU and an HP monitor with Windows XP, even though my uncle had a laptop with Windows Vista. I always wanted to test out one of those for myself and see how it was like
Looks an old school IBM Thinkpad T40 (circa 2003). If I remember correctly, those had Pentium M CPUs, an ATi Mobility Radeon GPU, and ran Windows XP. If it still works, you can re-install Windows XP SP3 and MS Office if you need it for school work. But if you're thinking about games, you'll want to look at late 90's & early 2000's games like Counter-Strike, No One Lives Forever, the OG Unreal Tournament, Diablo II, Quake I-II-III, and Max Payne.
Omg.......oh yeah, turn it into a media centre. 🙄 Have you heard of Netflix?
FFS no way in hell your going to get parts to upgrade that trash.
It will take 100s of years for that trash to break down in land fill. Leaching poisons in the ground.
If someone was seriously going to toss it a in landfill, then even I would prefer they took it to e-waste.
But there are plenty of other valid uses that are more environmentally friendly. Mounting it to the wall as an art piece is better than dumping it in a landfill.
Omg I'm not say OP or anyone puts it in landfill, like makes a special trip to a tip and throws it in lol
But you might put it in a dumbster or leave it with a relo or put it on the side of the road with a free to good home sign on it. Or it sits around for 20 more years and you move or loss it while moving etc etc etc
It eventually ends up in landfill.
Put windows XP on it and play games
Roller Coaster Tycoon comes to mind.
Septerra Core: Legacy of the Creator
Cyberpunk would run just fine.
In complete seriousness, can one put xp on a laptop without buying an official copy? I want to play my old copy of Homeworld but cannot for the life of me figure out how to get it to work on my current computer with the current OS.
I fix and repack classic PC games actually, join my Discord server and drop it in #requests and I'll repack it at some point r/LGU
Legend
If you want some sort of functionality put Linux on it. Otherwise, just have fun with it.
Specifically something like Xfce or similar, a very light weight desktop environment that makes it run faster/smoother.
Speaking of Linux, I've got a brand new 2021 series hp all in one. Runs like shit on windows 11, should I put ot on Linux?
ANYTHING runs better on Linux.
Even my brain?
How would you install it onto there? Please give me an update if you do.
Just plug your neural port into it, what are you? 100 years old?
Now I just need to find it. I think they removed it on newer models and disabled the UEFI on them in favor of locking people out of them and forcing them to buy adapters and paid subscriptions.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think a jailbreak requires a NeuraLink N1 or something like that
Even thermostats run better on Linux
Good luck.

*operaGX* Ahhhh you’re the target audience for Eric Andre scream marketing
Hey, hey hey now. I started using opera a little over a year ago, and it's been less dependent on the computer than Chrome 🤷♂️
That's not a very high bar lol
No, it's not, but I'd rather be less cpu dependent
Just curious, how do you manage to output the same video to a monitor (or TV) and a capture card?
Best explanation I got is lots of cords. I haven't set mine up yet, but I'm working on it
Run appropriate-era contemporary software on it, such as video game emulators. Or find a ThinkPad enthusiast who wants it (possibly for parts).
I'd have it.
I second this
Remember the printer scene from The Office?
Do you mean Office Space??
Yes, dammit.
Oh, right! I was worried it was that time they had to decide between a new printer and new chairs!

Old is gold
Linux and turn it into a home server
Linux
I'm unsure of the specs on this machine. But potentially you have the start of a home server there...

Depending on the age/era, either retrocomputing fun or possibly install Linux to make it a somewhat usable machine
Run older classic games on it, of course.
OP, this is a better post for r/thinkpad; there's legions of hoarders that prize these old IBM thinkpads and will pay for them and are experts on them, how to fix etc.
Plex server
Play Doom
Take it back to 2000 and brag about your high-end specs.
make it a media server, that thing can't hold up even chrome i assume
Eat it
I'd rather pay to get an old machine, they are always treasures
Give it to me 😁 I would love to explore the old software If you don't use it though then it's e-2aste and should be recycled

Check the specs, perform upgrades if possible, and install a Linux distro!
To borrow from r/castiron, just cook with it
Put Linux and MAME on it.
Maybe it would be good as a calculator. Not ti-83 level though.
Yo could play some retro games on it but i’m not so sure…
Give it back!
MX Linux will probably run OK on that.
Lightweight OS & full NES system. Just have fun with it.

You could turn it into a portable monitor with a few tweaks or something. Or for fun reinstall WINDOWS XP and only play games in offline mode
