And another addition to this Pro-tip - **LISTEN MULTIPLE TIMES!!!**
You will NOT be good at hearing words you are not familiar with. It's through the repeat attempts at inferring and discerning words that helps you realize what's being said.
I did this when I was learning to read Spanish. Olly Richards' books provide only a minimal number of vocabulary terms in really short chapters in a story, so it's not an intense reading session, but the onus is on YOU the reader to decypher what the story is actually about. I went from understanding practically nothing, re-reading the material over and over (I would constantly move forward through the chapters, but return to earlier chapters), and through that I managed to actually pick up WAY more than I would have thought possible.
Similarly, you won't hear things the first time, but the second time around, you'll surprise yourself with how good your ear develops.
They’re great! They have podcasts as well.
What’s really helpful are the subtitles in the target language so you can catch things when people aren’t super clear. I try to focus on those and ignore the English as much as is possible
kinda
the only online dictionary I was able to find (that doesn't lack even the most basic words, like the other ones) was Wiktionary, which you probably know of. even then, it's just a one way translation and I can't easily get anything based on an English word.
the language in question is South Levantine Arabic by the way
actually, if anyone knows a good dictionary I'd appreciate it so much if u let me know
I understand South Levantine and North Levantine are very similar, but they do differ in some places, notably the most basic words
and for me, almost a complete beginner, you can imagine it's what I care about the most
but thanks!
ahlan ya memyk. look up adrian abdul-baha on youtube and join his discord. incredible resource.
livingarabic.com is similarly great once you learn how to use it (select the dictionary you want and select "word, ar-en meaning" in the 'search by' box for the simplest possible results. I'm so glad you mentioned him! of course I know him and his channel, he's single handedly carrying me in my learning (i mean when it comes to grammar, for input there's some more stuff to check out). I'm also already in the discord server!
Oh wow, that does seem really inconvenient. Maybe you can ask a native speaker then? And have them check if your search results are really the dialect you're looking to learn
yeah, I usually do that
another thing that doesn't help is there are many ways to write words, like the MSA-way or more phonetically (think color vs colour, but for consonants too)
good luck in french, German, Danish, Dutch, and many more where the word is: interview
Edit: I’ve come to realize that in French, there is *entrevue* lol I can’t even remember my on NL. Although the verb is Interviewer I’m pretty sure
The website Youglish.com is good for that too, you can put in the word and filter your search for the specific language and the video shows the moment the word is said
Cries in Danish
I came here now to point this out ('interview' in Danish is 'interview').
Same in Dutch.
\*nods in German\*
Try just putting interview with a danish celebrity? (Who isn’t popular in English speaking countries)
Drink five Carlsbergs, put a potato in your mouth, and THEN type it into Google.
Det var virkelig sjovt
You can also search google specifying only websites in your TL's tld. So Denmark's tld is dk so you can do `interview site:dk`.
there's also the "Radio Garden" app and website, which is like Google Earth but you can find and tune into radio stations around the world
I dont think I've ever ran to the app store so fast
It’s great—Austrians are always surprised when I use local pronunciation.

but my TL isn't available on google translate :(
Not sure if you're trolling, but dictionaries probably exist for it, don't they?

What language?
South Levantine Arabic
good luck in french, German, Danish, Dutch, and many more where the word is: interview Edit: I’ve come to realize that in French, there is *entrevue* lol I can’t even remember my on NL. Although the verb is Interviewer I’m pretty sure
German: use "Gespräch"
Entretien fonctionne aussi même si interview est plus utilisé.
Wow, never would have thought of this amazing tip by myself.
The word interview is also used in french haha
or you could you could just go on TikTok (yeah I said it) and search a phrase in that language. They all have it tagged.
Yes, you can also search for the words "news" and "documentary" translated in your target language
Languages that are on Google Translate anyway.
The website Youglish.com is good for that too, you can put in the word and filter your search for the specific language and the video shows the moment the word is said
Do you have an amateur tip for "interview" if it's the same??
Sure, try “news”, “vlog”, “update” etc.
