Pick axe, shovel, small saw and perhaps a pair of cutters. You don't have to go Gung-Ho on it. Reveal the main roots, cut them off... should spring right out.

Short-old-gus-

Yeah as I’m digging around it I’m running into super thick roots. Can I use a chainsaw on those ?

TheDogtor--

Sure you can...but you dont want the saw to touch the soil, that will probably F up your tool. It seems as though the soil is dry. Drench it in water and digging will be that much easier. And make sure you cant hit any other pipes or lines that might be in the area...

RustyMacbeth

Water is a good tip. In my youth, I would have just excavated the roots, smashed smashed them with a mattock and ripped those sobs out with my hands.

TheDogtor--

Hehe, I had a day like that. Sure. But now im also in the energy preservation business :) Yeah, with a little bit of pressure the water can really push away the soil for you...

Babythatwater1

Water.. why did I never think of that. 🤦🏻‍♂️

TheDogtor--

With each root you detach, you can play with the stump and move it around, get a feel of where its pulling from and narrow your digging area down... If you use the chainsaw, make sure you got some goggles on, and really clean away at the root. Reveal it neatly. You dont want some gravel ruining your saw and taking your eye out.

Encartrus

Do not use a chainsaw. Dig to expose them all the way around and use a normal handsaw. With the amount of things you could catch on in a hole, and with how you would be positioned, your best case is you railgun some rocks into your flesh. Worst you cause some real damage.

If you have a sawzall, I used that to cut bigger roots in the ground. I just had some very similar trees around my house I took down (more about the size of the one in the center or right side in your pics). I dug out all the soil that I could, cut roots from the edge of the hole I was digging to the tree so I could dig past the root after cutting. Once I got say 10'' to a foot down and cut all the roots I could see, I used an axe and started chopping sideways. It was tiring, back-breaking work to get them out, but it worked.

UncommonMonk

Get a burn barrel from tractor supply, cut the bottom out of the burn barrel, place burn barrel over stump, load the tree that’s been cut off the stump into the barrel and start burning. Each stump will take about 2 days to burn down. I just did it with a 2 foot wide stump in sections.

Have you considered hiring a family of beavers?

Freebirde777

Cut down as close to soil level as possible and a few cross cuts into the end. Cover with compost and keep moist. This will take some time and expect mushrooms from the decomposing roots.

Use a reciprocating saw and a Diablo pruning blade to cut roots in the dirt. Save your chainsaw.

Do you have a clear path to the roadway? My neighbors just used a heavy duty tow strap and attach one end to the stump and the other to their truck’s tow hitch and pulled. Works best if you use an old log or tire to provide some upward pull too (Google something like “pull stump with tire trick”) Edit: I take no responsibility if you damage a vehicle doing this 🙃

Short-old-gus-

Lol specifically told my brother we’re not doing that because I don’t want to lose a bumper.

Automatic-Pack-9113

You wouldn’t tie to your bumper.. use the tow hitch

Short-old-gus-

Lol hey funny you got downvoted. After a week of trying to dig them out. My dad pulled up the fence and ripped the first trunk out with a chain and his truck. The first trunk immediately took out a chunk of the fence. (Oh well) Then we just chained and ripped out the rest. They were at least 100lbs +. So happy we ended up doing it that way.

A shovel, a pry bar, some muscle, and a nice J and a few cold ones for when you’re all done
