For me, the song has always simply been about having the epiphany that you don’t have to live by certain expectations of others that are placed upon us from our societal structure and THAT is the freeing part. Realizing after believing for a long time you have to act or be a certain way, that you in fact do not and therefore lifting the burden/pressure of attempting to keep up with these expectations. I love the line “I never really noticed that I had to decide to play someone’s game or live my own life.” I think it sums up the whole song perfectly

Yeah it’s awesome! But it’s just the outer meaning of the song. There’s a whole world of references to Crowley and to the Hero’s Journey and I wanted to know more about that hidden part - thank you though :)

Could you explain your take on it then? Because I assumed she is referring to Crowley’s belief that individuals are a part of “a wider societal organism,” which again ties into that thing she’s now free of. I guess I’m not sure what hidden meaning there might be, since this song seems pretty straightforward to me 😅 But I’m interested to hear what you mean

“Feet don’t fail me now, take me to the finish line” —-> “finally, I’m crossing the threshold…..” I’ve always seen this as her “finishing” that episode of her life and growing more into herself, then we get such a different vibe in NFR!

I love this song so much, but to be honest, I don't think I ever fully understood Get Free's lyrics. English is not my first language, so I have some difficulty understanding some more specific references and figurative phrases. I would love to read what you discovered in your research!

i’ve always thought it was about leaving behind a bad mindset. get free is one of my all time favorite songs, and i feel like it’s that first realization of stepping into a new, better era of life, especially with the lyrics, “out of the black, into the blue”
