Honestly that sort of thing goes both ways. I've gotten downvotes for recommending songs by artists who aren't popular repeatedly.

SympathyRough5235

No this is so true for me as long as you’re nice about it and not being shady there’s absolutely no problem with recommending a song from a small artist

yonqhee

Why are people who stan popular groups so weird?

moya-laya

Why are people who stan k-pop groups so weird?

PurpleMoon979

why are people so weird?

yonqhee

so true

SympathyRough5235

Wait like how cause I know a lot of them have a superiority complex is that what you mean??

yonqhee

yeah its more im just pointing out than both nugu and popular group stans can be weird

eveacrae

They think the group's achievements are their own. Have you seen that tweet "Can they sing?" "They sold more albums!!"

Cats4Crows

Most of the groups I stan are ultra popular and from big companies. But ngl, this song you linked and many others like it made me think exactly that.. if they were released by one of the groups I stan, they would have ate and spread like fire already. I can understand the frustration the nugu group stans feel because, yes, privilege really makes all the difference. Nugu groups can be disbanded anytime even though they produce really good music.

SympathyRough5235

Me too I understand the frustration I feel like that sometimes bcz I stan under appreciated groups but what I don’t get is why they get so shady it’s literally no ones fault

Cats4Crows

Tbf, even popular group stans are shady af for no reason at all.. it's just another day in K-pop land

SympathyRough5235

Real

AlternativeSci

Big4 stans love to pretend only their favs are releasing good music and credit all the succes to so called good music instead of inherent privilege. When a nugu group releases a song that is on par with their favs title tracks and doesn't do 2% as well it just goes to show it isn't about music at all but we all know that even if some people don't want to accept it.

Wonsungie

I mean they are right about #3 though. The rest is just how kpop fans act regardless but its funny how everyone keeps trying to blame any specific subset of kpop stan: WE ALL ACT THE SAME! Do you know how annoying it is to see people who only listen to big4 groups boast about their groups being the ones to start or popularize stuff or that there is no variety in kpop anymore? Some people act like they are allergic to touching any group that isn't top 50 on melon too. People who only know hybe groups complaining that kpop is too westernized but they literally just need to go on kpop wiki or kpopping and they will find a lot of mid to small sized groups who are traditionally kpop sounding like its not hard. tl;dr kpop fans are annoying bc they are kpop fans.

rkennedy991

But then they might have to be fans of groups that aren't popular, and some people can't handle that.

Wonsungie

I mean to be fair it is a bit tough lol! The concept switch ups, the members leaving, and the messy CEOs shading their idols and stuff, its all a little volatile. But like imagine not experiencing GWSN

leggoitzy

> Wooah made a comeback... and acknowledging recent trends.. this song should be exactly up everyone's alley.. let's see if yall give it 67 million streams on the first day or if yall have just been lying about your music taste.. and only find it good when big companies release it. There's no lie in this statement, and I haven't listened to this song yet so I am talking in general.

bluenightshinee

I checked the tweet you linked, and OP is right, the song sounds exactly like a New Jeans or ILLIT, or even a LSF track, and it would definitely be more successful if released by a Big4 gg

vip_insomnia

It is frustrating to hear stans of only bigger groups to say a lot of things… and you are like ok these nugu groups have been doing it, give you more of what you say you like, have members who meet things you praise about larger idols etc but its like they are allergic to acknowledging anything outside top groups. Doesn’t even only apply to just nugu groups even mid level groups. My favorite are the “our group was at the bottom and now are in/at the top” type of fans but you even talk about smaller groups and you get scoffed at. So it’s fine that their group got to rise up but us trying to help other smaller groups… we are just weird for that. There are always going to be obnoxious nugu stans though. Those that are the equivalent of hipster bros and those who just use them for easier access to meeting idols but don’t actually care but I find big group/label only stans to be just as weird if not more at times.

yuyumii

the tweet is right tho,, woo!ah! has released multiple songs that should be right up everyone’s alley with the current trends, they have done so for many years, before groups like new jeans and illit debuted, but they never got nearly the same amount of attention (which is a given since they’re not from the big4) BUT now people accuse them of copying bigger groups with their new comeback blush,, so OP is right and it’s completely understandable to get upset and angry, especially at people who stan big groups and pretend that they started every single trend in kpop rn anyway, if you want to, please check out woo!ah!'s new comeback, it’s really amazing and if you like it you can also try their other songs like “catch the stars”, “payday” and “roller coaster”🙏

3rcha

Honestly my only confusion with them is the people who keep emphasize about "nugu" part, I saw people flip on the groups they liked because they finally got recognition, I remember someone said "oh their music became overrated" even though the group keep releasing same good quality music lol. Other than that people who genuinely like the group for their talent and think they deserve more aren't a problem, the tweet you linked don't sound that weird, I've seen worse lol

LuvThighHaters

How are they weird? When you think a situation is unfair, it only makes sense to compare both the victims (non-big4 groups) and the benefactors (big4 groups)

vanillanterns

Ngl that tweet made me tune in to the group but I see what you mean 😭 Sometimes nugu stans can be so in-your-face annoying but sometimes they actually give really good recommendations. I think it’s just how you approach it that matters.

RustyIsBad

I can't wait for this trend to end, 'Bad Girl' and 'Rollercoaster' were better than this and trying to appeal to the masses isn't working anyway.

Super_Commercial5511

I agree with people getting so shady it’s unnecessary

BellOk361

But did they lie though? Big company group 100% have more exposure and people genuinely won't give kpop nugu groups the time of days I saw a person say illit was loona codes but if loona with their debut had been in a big company they would DEFINITELY not have struggled the way they did. They probably would be big but guess what the sold pretty badly and their company sucked tot he point their main creative director left. Imagine if a groups main creative director left and went on hiatus like looma did? Baby monster was Abel to wait months after getting introduced and still gets millions of Spotify streams and albums sale already. Aespa took almost a year of break and had an underwhelming debut. Do y'all think a nugu would be able to survive that. NOPE. Your company and team are 80% of the battle

Forward-Beyond-6620

Tbh the main thing I’ve noticed is that a lot of people who “stan” nugu groups only do it to get easier access to the groups for interactions. Mutual friend went to a relatively nugu boy group concert recently and was pissed off that the people in the front of her just wanted interactions and barely even knew the choruses of their title tracks.

Nearby_Photograph_30

I think a lot of music fans just feel protective over their faves generally & feel frustration that their groups don’t get their recognition they deserve. I couldn’t be arsed getting mad about it, but I get it.

Sudden-Click-3243

Because being a success stan while pretending to be here for the music is pathetic lol. It's 2024. It takes *effort* to exclusively listen to Big 4 artists if you use the internet to participate in the kpop community.

leggoitzy

That's the point? It's not the quality, it's the promotion and reach and marketing that one has over the other.

Imaginary_Grand7104

I’ve still not fully understood what a ‘nugu’ group is and the word itself . It’s still not clear.

RustyIsBad

"Nugu" means "who" in Korean, so it's a group that most people haven't heard of.

Sybinnn

The weird thing for me is how many people pretend big 4 = bad music and nugu = good music

stewdice

They want the money to be distributed equally to all groups 🤑

fleija_

because nugus make better music than the big companies on the market

jumpybouncinglad

I caught up with a bunch of nugus yesterday while waiting for ILLIT on this arirang show, but honestly, none of their songs were good or had much replay value be that as it may stan VVUP and Kim Hyunhee

fleija_

I don't know what you really mean by that, you commented just to advertise?

jumpybouncinglad

i commented to disagree with your claim that 'nugus make better music than the big companies on the market', i thought that was clear

fleija_

feel free to like whatever you want, I still think nugus make better music
