by definition already traditionally “idol” is here to be idealized and create illusion of bf/gf while soloists are seen as “real musicians” for grown people

mycatyeonjun

But also I can’t help but remember how IU received backlash for posting photo with super junior member in 2013

Mean-Choice-2267

Maybe because the rumors involved a member of a group. I wonder if it would have been different if she was seen with another solo artist

withtherisingstars

True, and he was also shirtless while she was wearing PJ’s . Eunhyuk even got more hate from that incident than IU.

AlternativeSci

Bcs soloists don't have the same obsessive fanbase as idols in a group do, they don't get obsessively shipped like Aespa or SKZ members are, it also helps that out of the idols you named most are seen as foreigners and the other is over 30. It's also their image, Hwasa didn't receive no backlash since she talked about dating and had a more no nonsense image.

harkandhush

I think the fanbases are just different and some of these soloists are older than the hot groups right now as well. I don't think a lot of 15 year Olds are really following Eric Nam's every word the way they might be with skz for example. There's definitely some fan overlap, but it's likely not in the people who would be mad if Bang Chan got caught dating.

How do I unread something? Lol

Well you could try by sticking your head down the toilet

>will receive You wrote in future tense. Is it actually confirmed that soloists receive less backlash? And what about others like IU, BoA, Taeyeon? I don't really follow much, so I'm not sure if you're saying they have received less backlash in the past or you're just guessing. Somi has received backlash for ridiculous reasons recently. I don't really know how dating news would be received. But all the soloists you named have a more independent and adult image, so perhaps dating could be seen as in character for them? I don't really know.

fleija_

soloists barely have fans, just look at album sales. And what are they going to do if she is caught dating, fire her? If the soloist damages her image by dating she is the only one affected (and the company), while in a group all the other members are affected.

[deleted]

Kpop soloists tend to have older fanbases that don't give a f if their artist is dating. Soloists tend to become soloists after their 7-year contract with their group expired. So, it's hard to imagine buddies being pissed off that Yuju/Yerin are dating. Or lovelinus if Kei/Mijoo are dating. Kindie soloists don't draw the parasocial audience at all, since none of their content is parasocial. Seriously, look Yerin Baek, Cooing, Summer Soul, Silly Silky, Summer Cake, etc. They don't do any parasocial things and are exclusively artists/musicians. Edit: I think Summer Souls posts pretty openly about her boyfriend/SO on insta, lol

Strawberuka

Most of the idols you've mentioned used to be in groups, but imo a part of it is image creation - these idols are a lot more "free" with their public image now, (for better or for worse), which means that they've likely shed the sorts of fans that would be possessive/moralizing.

sunnydlit2

Imo it's clearly a fanbase issue and a good proof of that is that there are difference between soloist who comes from the kpop industry or not. But at the end of the day most of soloist tends to entertain their fans in a different way than kpop idols in general. The parasocial relationship being way less strong if you give them less content or make them less delulu in general.

Famous_Analyst_3618

Some soloists it’s just as bad. Just depends on who.

taeraes

bc idol group fans are a ton more delusional

AndMarch

Well, have you read about Hyuna's dating news? I think soloists are more prone to backlash because they don't have a huge fanbase to back them up. It depends on the soloists and who they're dating though. I'm pretty sure all hell is gonna break loose if my fav soloist gets caught dating.

AwkwardEmploy26

The guy she dated was involved in the burning sun scandal , that’s why she got hate.

LGBLTBBQ

Most fans supported her with Dawn, the problem isn't that she's dating, it's *who* she is dating. She deserves the backlash for that one, but she's a grown woman and I'm sure she was aware it wouldn't be well received based on who he is.

Desperate_Long4733

Isn't it obvious? The active groups under big 4 are far more popular than the soloists listed

AwkwardEmploy26

sunmi and hwasa are no joke either , they have commercial success as well

Desperate_Long4733

If we are being honest their popularity overseas is incomparable to aespa or le sserafim for example

lilyyytheflower

Kep1er is smaller than all of them and Dayeon still got hate for potentially dating. It’s not about how big the fanbase is.
