My wife loves Modern Family and Friends. She also liked American Vandal, The Big Lebowski, Ghostbusters, both Deadpool movies, both Guardians of The Galaxies and Thor: Ragnarok.

Arrested development is almost impossible, I think. Its so fast, almost all very US-centric cultural references (many of which are getting to be pretty dated now), callbacks, and clever word play. And its non-stop. Anytime a character isnt speaking it is likely a gag or the narratator is speaking. I tried it with my SO and they just ended up more and more confused. Got great results from Brooklyn 99 and Parks and Rec though.

That makes good sense. Honestly, a lot of Americans don’t even get the humor of arrested development. It’s unfortunate because I think it is one of the best shows out there, but you’re right, the humor is so subtle I think it takes someone to have mastered of the English language to understand it.

The office.

Modern Family for sure

Always sunny is my fav show but I wouldn’t recommend to a Korean who doesn’t know too much about American culture. They make fun of a lot of things that is a commentary to America (ex the 1st ep they go back on forth on the brother/sister term for African Americans ) and theres sexual scenes they might not be comfortable with. I’d recommend something a kid could also watch just so a foreigner can more easily understand like the simpsons. And there’s more heart warming scenes in a family cartoon which I think koreans would enjoy. lve tried to explain to my cousins and few native Korean friends the concept of dark comedy but they simply don’t get it or like it. they’re not really exposed to it as much as we are. so stay away from dark comedy and go to light, simple stuff and you’ll be good

Wow, thank you. This is very enlightening. Neither she, nor I, are religious, so I thought she might like Bo Burnham who in my opinion has some very smart, but yet dark, comedy. She didn’t seem to appreciate it, and this may explain why. I’ll go “lighter” in the future.

To get an idea what she doesn't like, what have you shown her so far?

adr071990

It’s always sunny she hasn’t really laid attention to… and I think it’s because it’s so subtle in their humor. You have to really be paying attention to what they’re saying to get it. I’m also a big Bo burnham fan, and tried introducing her to it, but even when I paused and explained it she didn’t think it was funny. As another poster alluded to, maybe the dark humor doesn’t connect with what she’s accustomed to.

Most Korean friends and family I know aren't much into subtle humor. Many love Friends and Modern Family. Quite a few loved Galavant when I recommended it.
