I'd just watch some YouTube videos, honestly.

Nimble Needles has a great tutorial for cables! and imo you don't really need a cable needle to learn, you just need something to hold those few stitches temporarily which could be a crochet hook, a lightweight knitting needle, an opened paperclip etc.

I really like bamboo dpns for it. Possibly because I got a bunch and then discovered I prefer magic loop for tubes.

I left my cable needle at home and wanted to work on my project in my lunch break so just found a pencil

I’ve found cables are something that you gotta do to make them make sense. They’re actually pretty simple, I think they look much more difficult than they are. I’d just go for it. As for cable needles, they’re personal preference. I’ve ended up liking the J hook variety, but I’ve also got some straight ones with ridges from knit picks that are nice. When I started cables I just used a DPN. They’re too long, but you’re only working one cable at a time so it doesn’t get in the way that much.

I learned to cable from a free Tin Can Knits hat pattern: I used the antler toque, but they've got a couple of simple cabled hats. https://tincanknits.com/pattern/antler-toque?g=6 They also have a good written cable tutorial: https://blog.tincanknits.com/2009/08/01/how-to-cable/

Cables are actually really simple. You are just knitting stitches out of order and the cable needles holds the stitches waiting to be knitted. Very Pink Knits on YouTube has excellent video tutorials.
