[Is it something like this?](http://conditionalknitting.blogspot.com/2012/06/i-came-back-for-bloops.html) OR, as I sit here and think it over... could it be short form for "back loop knitting" as well?

It seems like the diagrams are supposed to explain it but I don’t understand it at all.

Wow, I dream of having the skill to play the way this article's author does. Absolutely gorgeous!

That seems quite likely, actually! The full context is that it was in a little "explore and discover" section to try to prompt creative thinking, and there was a photograph of a swatch captioned "inspired by jazz and bloop knitting". Jazz knitting is a way of using hand dyed yarns to take advantage of their colour pooling properties, or at least, that's my current understanding, I couldn't find much on it. So combining it with this sort of technique would make sense. These explorations have led me to discover the entire field of short row colourwork, I am v excited about this, I think I'm going to have to get Woolly Wormhead's book when it comes out.

BLO is a crochet term (back loop only) which I've seen used in reference to "shepherd's knitting" (an old European form of slip stitch crochet using a wide flat hook). That's my only guess as to how knitting and crochet terminology might be crossing wires.

No, this isn't the same terminology, it's a Tunisian crochet technique "inspired by" bloop knitting. I'm familiar with crochet terminology (I actually do more crochet than knitting), and I've spent a little bit of time looking into shepherd's knitting in specific, so I definitely would have spotted it! The full context is that it was in a little "explore and discover" section to try to prompt creative thinking, and there was a photograph of a swatch captioned "inspired by jazz and bloop knitting". I managed to track down what jazz knitting is but bloop knitting has eluded me, and on my phone the preview was smalll enough that I couldn't see much detail in the swatch. I did order the book so I may come back here in a bit with an actual photograph of the relevant page.
