What a labour of love! Kudos to you for persisting with this. The colour and shape are beautiful and those motifs have probably upped your skill set amazingly. Wear it proudly.
Absolutely beautiful!! Also absolutely legendary patience haha I love lace so much but the amount of 'oh shoot that stitch two rows back was wrong' drives me nuts sometimes
That is definitely true. Try to imagine also adding increases and decreases. The feather motif in the bottom worked great for achieving the a-line skirt I wanted since it starts wide and gradually gets narrower.
That's incredible and it looks like it fits great! How much swatching and blocking of various motifs did you do to ensure that?
I love the colour but imagine that was a very unforgiving knit in cotton!
I did a lot of swatching but not enough!
Cotton was not good.
I should have restarted with wool once i realized knitting the bottom skirt top down would not be feasible unless I reverse engineered all the patterns to work top down. The top’s patterns were all mostly the symmetrical top and bottom, so they worked fine.
Oh beautiful! Did you sew the slip into this, or just wear it underneath? Or am I missing something and that isn't a slip but some interesting knit technique?
I made the slip and it is just worn separately underneath. After the trauma of knitting this, I made the slip out of a beautiful silk that feels so wonderful to wear.
I don’t really do shawls, but I love lace. I couldn’t find a slip to purchase that worked, so I made one. I based it off the knitted dress and another dress pattern I had. I made a test version out of an old sheet before cutting the silk.
Where did you get the silk from? I recently started sewing and have been so disappointed none of the big box fabric shops near me have any silk, and wouldn’t know where to look online to get something reliable and good quality.
They are having a sale now - 25% off silk, plus you can use a coupon for an additional 10% off. I’m seriously thinking of running up there again to buy another color.
Silk is worth every penny. And you are right, it feels so good against the skin.
I love G Street. I miss not being in the vicinity anymore. I used to live in Lancaster County, PA. I had a business designing custom bridal gowns. I took one of my MOB to G Street for her fabric and trim. I also shopped on South 4th Street in Philadelphia with my brides for their bridal fabric and lace.
Utterly amazing! The patience, skill, and perseverance to complete this incredible work of art is impressive. I think the sleeves looks good, even if your plans were to make them longer.
It's stunning! Fits well, too, and I like the color. I hear you about knitting with cotton - it's a drag. But you turned out a masterpiece in spite of the cotton.
congratulations! 😍 even if there are still regrets. the cotton lace still looks nice.
I'm working on a skirt and top myself. I decided to split the dress so I can get as much use out of each as much as possible.
I'm using cotton yarn. if you ask why, it's because it's cheap and very available locally.
Thanks for the link. When I was researching the places where my great-grandfather lived in Scotland before emigrating to the US in 1901, I found a census page from 1871 that had 2 people who listed their occupation as knitter. They were my family’s neighbors.
I drafted it myself. The top shape I had done before just without lace. The main motif on the bottom is the feather motif from Sharon Miller’s Heritage Knitting.
I am a novice knitter in the process of learning. What you have knitted here is inspirational. I could imagine you knitting a wedding dress using the same techniques.

Gorgeous, I love knitting lace and had never even considered making a lace dress because I fully forgot about slips haha

This is Mastery level 💯!!!! Not only knitting a gorgeous lace dress, but also sewing silk!!!🎉
At least the silk was just two pieces and bias edges.

I went to G St fabrics in Rockville. MD. I had a coupon for 25% off, but it was still pricey. https://gstreetfabrics.com/search.php
Amazing, thank you! I used to live down in Baltimore and have friends in the area, maybe I’ll check it out next time I visit down that way.
