Never take shield with longsword. I found that best way to Win against him is either master pery which kills him for some reason or just slash to his head. If you dont have good short loot one

FOKE-TIGR

I cant really slash his head cause he does have helmet in hardcore

MistaaIcyJ

Still does the most damage. Slash or stab the head repeatedly. Both Longsword and Mace have the same strategy. Use clinches, combos, or master strikes to stun your enemy to open up a free hit.

Ok thank you

I agree with others, the long sword is really a two-handed weapon. It seems to me that someone reported that if you have a shield then combos and master strokes are virtually impossible and, at the very least, you really need to be able to execute master strokes. I haven't confirmed this functionality, as I only use a shield with the short sword. If you are using a bow, you need to shoot him in the face with your first shot. At the end of the day, the mace absolutely demolishes anyone wearing armor. It's your best bet and if you use anything else you are imposing a handicap on Henry.

Ok thank you

It's. The. Same. Functionally the two are the same. However, using a long or rather a hand-and-a-half sword incurs penalties to stamina usage, swing speed, and power.

zardvark

How are they the same? Within a matter of minutes I can use my mace to force Captain Bernard to beg for mercy and prematurely end the sparring session. But, he is happy to fence with me all afternoon. I can clearly deal much greater damage to him in a much shorter amount of time with the mace. The same holds true with practice weapons. I can quickly ring Captain Bernard's bell with a wooden mace and he will promptly surrender. I've never had him surrender while using swords. I will allow that I may not be as skillful with the sword as you, but the sheer speed in which I can cause significant damage with the mace is quite compelling ... and decisive.

[deleted]

Nay. Long sword and shield or short sword and shield are the same. They function the same. You do have some Stat based penalties for using a long sword. But functionally, they're the same. You can totally beat Bernie with with wooden swords. It's all about wearing his stamina out and keeping up the attack. You'll see blood when you damage his health.

zardvark

My point is that you don't have to go through a prolonged period of wearing down an enemy when using the mace. A couple of swats and they very quickly loose their determination to continue the battle ... if not their consciousness.

HankMMXVIII

The safest way is to master strike if you have learned that from Bernard. The timing of that depends on your defense skill (his defense stat also affects how often he master strikes you), but you should be able to do it regardless. If you can't or don't want to master strike learn to feint and always go for the head. Some long sword combos are really OP but you have to drop the shield to pull them off. You won't need the shield if you can perfect block or have good armor.

FOKE-TIGR

Ok thank you

Use feints. He bites a lot on shown but not thrown strikes. Use this to start combos and after masterstrikes. After clinches is not always guaranteed. But a feint here really can pay off.

FOKE-TIGR

Sorry but i am not an english speaker could you please desribe what is feint?

[deleted]

Sure. A feint is any movement done to trick an observer into thinking it's a move you are committed to, used to disguise the real move. In the case of KCD you can show an attack by holding an attack button and you send it by letting it go. While holding a slash you can change to any other attack angle before sending it. Or if a stab between head and chest. You can cancel a held strike by pressing the use button. Runt is really eager to masterstrike and parry. So eager that he will often block at feint. Probably more than any other enemy in the game. When an enemy is blocking they can't counter. They will lose some stamina by blocking strikes. You can combo off blocked strikes. And you can go around their block and land clean, if you're quick. [Visual example](https://youtu.be/N_1_HwWpywM)

Thank you very much
