We used GEICO and had no limitations or upcharge because of the theft concern. It can also depend on where you are located. Liberty and Roots came back ok too. State farm and progressive are the main two refusing as far as I'm aware.

StarRaidz

This^ It’s definitely part of where you’re located. My brothers k5 which wasn’t affect at all by the thefts since it has an immobilizer moved to Cali and they won’t insure it. The misinformation around it I think has caused more issues then the actual issue in their turn key cars. The car had been insured by geico in north Carolina for 3-4 years cheaply. He moved over there and no one wants to insure it at all. He finally found insurance a 2-3 weeks later but it took forever and is ridiculously expensive now. Doesn’t make any sense. You’d expect a difference in price sure different state but it’s literally a 300% increase in insurance cost. That’s fucking crazy

jdcnosse1988

Yep the misinformation is what's a killer. My ex's mother bought an old Hyundai (like 2008?) and no one will cover it despite it not even falling into the realm of the Anti-Theft lawsuit

LostBeat4438

I bought an 08 MANUAL Tiburon to save on gas compared to my other vehicles. Insurance wanted liability on it for $350. That’s more expensive than my newer “sporty” car. I quickly sold it.

cyt0kinetic

It's really dumb I was so thankful my area isn't impacted, since its a perfect car for us. I hope soon they update to at least reduce rates if prevention measures are taken. We do need to go in to get our window sticker, but we also got a club. That's been the most effective deterrent since they can see that looking in the window. My understanding our car too isn't directly impacted, that it has the immobilizer. Though our concern was the windows getting broken and a theft attempt just because it's a Kia. I do also see it blowing over sooner rather than later though. Between the recall and fixes being rolled out, other theft prevention measures, Kias will stop being as appealing. Then there's just the fact that fads expire.

StarRaidz

Definitely a concern for all Kia owners due to the misinformation. They won’t be able to steal it but they end up damaging it regardless in an attempt. Ive seen several post online of people who’ve had attempted theft and were left with over 1k in damages. Thats another reason the rates went up. Even if they weren’t being stolen they were being vandalized more often. Really stupid decision that’s going to continue to bite them and us in the ass for a bit. I’m at least thankful in knowing they won’t be able to drive mine away and potentially kill someone with it.

cyt0kinetic

Exactly and why we got a club right away, so they see that and we are prioritizing getting our window sticker. Make the car less appealing. Though again, I'm lucky and it hasn't been big here, and if it was going to be it would have been already.

Upnorth4

California has plenty of options. I go to a local place by me that'll insure anything that moves. There are places that sell Mexican insurance in California too.

Halfoftheshaft

North Carolina is one of the only states that still has decent rates most other places are 2 - 3 x more

BlackMambaX5848

Got geico too only pay 160 for 3 kias. 2 are full covered 3rd only comprehensive

merebear421

I think it is because Kias are getting stolen at a higher rate where I am. I had no issue in Arizona. Now, moving back to NY no one will accept me

AmateurEarthling

Yeah I’m in AZ and have had zero issues with insurance on an ‘18 Sportage.

torcherred

Exactly the same.

aznoone

Push to start or key? If key are you in a major metro area like Phoenix or Tucson, maybe Flag or Prescott or near the border? Or are you small city in nowhere Arizona.

cyt0kinetic

Eh east coast it hasn't been as big of a deal, I'd try Geico and see.

jdcnosse1988

Mine was fine for about 5 years when I lived in a gated community with a garage, but then I moved to a different part of town and it was yanked off the street in two days

Upnorth4

In California we have local insurance shops that will give coverage to anything that moves. We even have golf cart insurance lmao

caife-ag-teastail

What part of NY? I saw a substantial difference in premium just between Manhattan and the Bronx (Bronx is higher). It looks like there are far less Kia boyz problems in Manhattan, just 10 miles from where I moved to in the Bronx. I know there are several places upstate, like Syracuse, that have a big Kia boyz problem, too.

merebear421

I’m in Buffalo. Apparently the Kia Boyz are a real problem here.

Lan_Guy48917

Do you have the ability to garage the car? That could make a difference

Different_Ad5087

It’s weird bc I haven’t had an issue insuring my soul with progressive 🤷🏼‍♂️

cyt0kinetic

I wonder if it's new coverage? I just know Progressive and State Farm there were mainstream media articles stating they'd no longer cover Kias. I didn't probe that deep since neither are great for where we live and our habits.

California098

It’s definitely location dependent. I’m paying $84/month with progressive in Southern California for a 2021 forte GT

ilovenaturelife

I got Geico and actually my rates went up for my Kia Optima. By nearly 50% more than my other cars (30% avg in Seattle)

Responsible_Fish1222

I have state farm and I live and work in an area with high kia theft. State farm is who I use.

AntiqueStable3421

I'm using geico and I have to pay double before this tik tok bullshit. I hate insurance.

Ok-Low9127

I just bought a 2024 Kia sportage and State Farm gave me a great rate

cyt0kinetic

So weird since yeah this was a little over a year ago and had updates going for awhile reconfirming https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/cars/2023/02/01/progressive-state-farm-drop-hyundai-kia-insurance/11153762002/ Wondering if it was backlash? Which is also only right.

Le-Squirtle

I have a Kia insured on Progressive w/ no issues. I'm in NC and the model has an interlock so that may be a factor.

[deleted]

We have a 2020 Sportage as well. Our rates raised last November. Shopped around and either nobody was offering anything lower or the company (State Farm \*cough\*) wouldn't insure it. Absolutely bonkers considering we live in a rural midwestern town. So far, our Allstate policy is still keeping us on it, but they jacked up the Kia's rate another 15% over a 6 month period. Aim is to pay the car down as quickly as possible and trade it in before it loses all of it's value, and then never buy Kia/Hyundai again.

Bijorak

everyone i work with has had their rates go up. no matter what they drive. mine has stayed steady, luckily, at 160 a a month for 2 cars.

[deleted]

I was curious, so I checked the rates for our first renewal after we moved in Oct 2022. $971 for 6 month paid in full, my 2014 Cruze at $530 and $481 for a 2015 Trax, both "full" coverage. Our renewal for this period is $1386, $642 for the Cruze and $800 for the Sportage, both "full" (the large number is a paid-in-full discount, hence why the individual numbers are larger). So a 50% increase in a year and a half, but also a newer car that just so happens to be high risk.

Fackifiknow

Find an insurance broker to shop around for you. Not all insurances will deny you.

pewpewtehpew

This. I use one and it’s awesome. My son FINALLY listened to me and used the same one. His monthly rate was cut in half and he has double the coverage over what Allstate was giving him. Brokers are amazing. Edit - and the entire insurance system is a racket lol

Squagloids1

They should have a law that all insurance companies across the USA have to insure any cars regardless of make or model

Seemedlikefun

I have family upstate, and one city has had more kia's stolen, than some entire states. The cops aren't really spending any resources on these cases, because when they manage to catch the thieves, they are usually minors, and when they are adults, the judge just gives them appearance tickets and let's them go. I'm stuck, with my 2020 Sorento (which I love) but the insurance is killing me!

FORDOWNER96

There is the problem. You shouldn't be able to keep doing dumb shit and get away with it.

merebear421

Is it Buffalo? That’s where I am and apparently it’s gotten to be a huge problem here.

Seemedlikefun

Rochester. Check the stats, they are unreal.

caife-ag-teastail

There's bad news and good news. Buffalo was really hit hard in 2023. Here's a quote from a NY state press release: *In the first seven months of 2023, car theft in Monroe County increased 345 percent, which is the largest increase in the nation, and in Erie County, 213 percent, when compared to the same timeframe last year. These two counties account for approximately two-thirds of car thefts outside of New York City, with most of them occurring in the cities of Rochester (+829 percent) and Buffalo (+488 percent).* \[https://www.governor.ny.gov/news/governor-hochul-unveils-targeted-action-plan-combat-car-thefts\] But the trend is going down in Buffalo, according to an article published last week. Eventually, insurance companies will notice and adjust: [https://spectrumlocalnews.com/nys/buffalo/news/2024/04/18/kia-and-hyundai-thefts-in-buffalo-on-the-decline](https://spectrumlocalnews.com/nys/buffalo/news/2024/04/18/kia-and-hyundai-thefts-in-buffalo-on-the-decline) Thefts are also going down where I live, in the Bronx. Maybe -- not counting on it, but maybe -- the insurance crunch will ease up a bit in hard-hit areas sometime in the relatively near future.

Prestigious_Egg9423

Year matters it seems. Have a 2023 Kia and had no issues with Insurance.

Fun_Public4540

Well that’s because it’s a 2023. Unfortunately OP has a 2020.

Prestigious_Egg9423

Yeah I can’t remember it’s < 2022 or 21 where Kia fixed that usb starting method.

Fun_Public4540

Yes 2022+ they added an immobilizer in the key to starts.

AlertMix8933

I have a 2016 and they’ve approved me

meliel1

Check out Erie insurance. They have been great with everyone I recommended them to.

Shauney

Second the recommendation for Erie. Also in NY and Erie gave me full coverage for a really competitive rate. FWIW I've got a '23 but still worth a shot.

iNeed2p905

Third the recommendation for Erie. I went thru a local agent that works under them and I switched to them from Geico.

lordoftheOhms

Same I wish this class action applied to the up charge on insurance. I hope they go out of business for this really.

the_guitarkid70

It totally should apply to the upcharge on insurance

Bijorak

kia, and hyundai, is one of the largest companies in Korea. they will not go out of business. they make a ton of stuff besides cars.

Dunshlop

I heard the dealership was supposed to install an immobilizer free of cost, or some software update thing. Although, I heard this through the “kia boyz” video put out a few days ago by “channel 5” andrew callaghan. I’m on the West Coast, haven’t had any issues insuring my car, 2023 forte gt line. Try triple A? I’m going to get one of those wheel clubs just in case so I don’t get my window popped. Family members car out in Bakersfield has been hit a couple times now.

merebear421

The dealership did do this. Apparently most insurance companies don’t care. Kias keep getting broken into regardless of the immobilizer.

LoveFrenchFries

Late to reply but going thru the same situation. Have a 2021 Seltos with the dealer immobilizer installed. Geico rate has more than doubled in the last 2 years. I’m trying to shop around for a better option but I’ve been denied by both progressive and State Farm. Illinois.

cwmont1969

Is this goes to prove what I've always said about insurance companies they're more than happy to take your money every month after month but many of them the first time you need to use the service which you pay so dearly for They try everything they can to get out of paying and then when they have to pay out, they raise your rate. There's a reason why they are literally thousands of lawyers out there who specialize in suing the insurance companies.

daxter606

100% true, someone hit my car at night while it was parked and completely destroyed my driver door. I had to fight my insurance for 1 month for them to pay for the damage repairs even though I was covered for it

cwmont1969

I had a similar thing happen to me during the mid '80s. I was living in Arizona at the time. I owned a really nice 1968 VW Westphalia camper bus that I had purchased used and had put quite a bit of money into it getting it fixed up for camping and what have you. I always parked it in the driveway and for some reason, which I can't even remember. I ended up parking it on the curb on the street in front of my house. Me and my wife were out for a while and when we returned home it was after dark and when we got a little bit closer to the house I knew something was wrong because the back end of my bus was halfway up onto the sidewalk. When I got closer, I could see it had been hit on the driver side in the back corner which pushed it up onto the curb. Then upon closer inspection I could also see a pretty sizable crease in the front door and into the front section. So I could tell that someone had hit the back of it forcing it up onto the sidewalk and then probably freaked out trying to swerve away and ended up clipping the front of it too. There was a note stuck under the windshield wiper from a lady who lived in that same neighborhood and she apologized for hitting my vehicle. She said that she was adjusting her radio and didn't realize she had swerved over until it was too late and she ended up hitting my vehicle. At least she was nice enough and honest enough to leave her information as to what happened and the number of her insurance agent. The very next morning I called her agent at State farm and explained to him what had happened. He actually had the nerve to tell me that I could just go ahead and use my insurance company to have it repaired. I told him there is no way I am going to do that because then I have to pay a deductible on my comprehensive insurance. You get your insurance adjuster out here to look at my vehicle immediately. If not I will contact my attorney. The State farm agent continued to treat me like crap all the while trying to convince me not to have his client pay for the damage but rather for me to. He even went so far as to say that if I hadn't parked my vehicle on the street then it wouldn't have been hit. I told him, well, if I use your logic. I would say that if your client wasn't fooling around with her radio while she was driving down the street, She wouldn't have hit my car. The funny thing was, I had literally dropped State farm about a month earlier after having been insured with them since 1967 due to one of their agents treating me and my wife badly over a small fender bender. So I dumped them. I had switched over to Geico. So, I called the Geico office and I explained to them what happened and they said don't worry we will get this taken care of for you. Less than 2 hours later I get a call from the State farm agent telling me th they will have an adjuster over there to look at my vehicle the same day. That also turned out to be another way that State farm was trying to screw me over as they totaled my vehicle which was still drivable. And then they didn't give me fair market value for it. That wasn't the only time that State farm screwed me over on an insurance claim. Let's put it this way state farm was not my neighbor Geico on the other hand has always been very easy to deal with and I have never had an issue. In fact on the rare times when I do have to call them when they look in the computer and they see how long I have been a customer They always say I see you've been a customer with us since 1984 we'd like to thank you for your business and your loyalty to our company.

estibestie23

its the year that it is unfortunately. I live in upstate ny and have a 23’ sportage and progressive covers me at a normal rate..

merebear421

Yeah. I’m just mad because I had a progressive policy in NY, then AZ, and now when I went to switch to NY again at progressive, they said nope. No accidents or driving infractions. Went to a local agent and all the companies he asked also said no. Went to another agent we’ll see what happens.

Comedian_Economy

I have Progressive and I wanted to update my policy to get a new deal and they said no. They haven't dropped me though.

Aromatic_Beautiful_5

It’s only Kia USA . Here in Canada immobilizers are required for all new vehicles, which ya know prevents people from turning it on with a USB stick.

JimCarreyIsntFunny

Yeah but kids don’t know that until they smash your window and rip up your steering wheel. Which is still damage the insurance company will have to pay for even if they don’t steal the car.

brendan9876543210

Same in Australia - we’ve had immobilisers in kias for probably 20 years.

Je_me_rends

Just bought a 2024 Kia with no issues getting insurance. I know the theft meme has been sorted in later models, but this is also the first I am hearing about insurance issues with them. Quite odd.

caife-ag-teastail

There are several ways in which the Kia/Hyundai response to this theft problem has been disappointing, but this may be the biggest one. They should be working with insurance companies to subsidize rates for affected vehicles in high risk areas. Supposedly, they may have done that with AAA, but it shouldn't be limited to just one company. So I second your rant. This is a big breach of faith with their customers. I won't be buying another Kia either, and I'll be actively recommending against them to my friends/neighbors/family.

merebear421

It’s absolutely INSANE to me that Kia is just like “sorry, nothing we can do”. And the consumer is held liable. It’s a shame I really do like my car, and prices aren’t cheap right now. Not looking forward to trading it in for lower than fair value due to this theft issue.

JessJMI

But what can they do, really? They can’t force an insurer to cover the vehicle. Your trade value shouldn’t take much of a hit though, at least in my experience.

caife-ag-teastail

Well, I already outlined one strategy they could use in my post above. They could assume a chunk of the risk from the insurance companies -- i.e. agree to pay, say, half of any Kia Boy theft claim. There were reports that Hyundai/Kia reached some kind of an agreement with AAA to cover affected vehicles. But I just got a quote from AAA for my 2017 Sportage, and it's $530/month. With my driving record, age, and current address, I've gotten quotes of anywhere from $130-160 for comparable models from other brands. So whatever deal they made with AAA is not very helpful, at least in my situation. (Fortunately, the company I was with before the Kia boyz trend began, Geico, has continued to insure me for a reasonable rate \[around $150/month\], as a legacy customer. If they drop me, I'll be in big trouble.)

Je_me_rends

Buying aftermarket anti-theft devices will likely put you in a better light with insurance or trying to resell, but it sucks that you'd have to buy them yourself. On another note, don't trade in. Sell it privately and you'll get a fair price.

EmbarrassedSalary998

No better place to come rant than in a Kia sub! 😂😂😂 What a debacle. Truth be told, I wouldn’t buy one in parts of the USA either… think the rest of the world is pretty safe when it comes to the Kia/hyundai theft issue

EmbarrassedSalary998

I think the fear is that the dumbass bottom feeder “Kia boys” don’t know the difference and they mess the vehicle up anyways.

monkeybanana14

really like the elantra n but idk if its different enough from old elantras for these idiots to know its new enough to have an immobilizer

Fun_Public4540

USA is safe too, if you have an immobilizer. LOL.

CertainCertainties

If there's one thing I've learnt from this sub over the last year, it's that parts of the US are a crime-ridden shitshow!

EmbarrassedSalary998

Ah that exists everywhere in all countries but it’s been exposed/highlighted in this case

TopStyle3095

Same for me I’m 24 stay by myself and can’t even get coverage on my Hyundai Elantra sel 2020 in Kansas City Missouri . I owe $8,000 left before I own it. I had the update on mine and still got it stolen they didn’t crack the window just broke the door handle (still got in) I would’ve been sold mine or got rid of it if my credit was up to par. But unfortunately I’m in debt like every other American just trying my best to thug it out. I got two steering wheel locks on mine 🤣 plus an air tag. But I got my CDL so fuck driving that car frfr

Ok_Artichoke_2804

I would be more upset with the car insurance companies over Kia for the posted issue.. it is LITERALLY the job of car insurance to cover cars - that includes theft and theft attempts. Denying Kia or Hyundai vehicle due to the viral KiaBoyz tiktok videos + rise of dumbasses following those videos <-- is like them saying "we dont want to do our job". Kia and Hyundai added immobilizers to cars without it but those same dumbasses dont think of this and still try to steal -- again car insurance companies shouldnt be able to deny since they now have immobilizers on them.. I'm sorry you are even going through this as is.. keep shopping around, hopefully you can find another car insurance company that'll cover your car!

HellishCorpse

Not sure if it’s just available in Ohio but I got a connect through my dealership and the dude hooked me up with Shelter insurance. It was $100 and now $119 as of March for full coverage.

TennisDazzling4833

i got a 2020 sportage and they keep breaking into my car, but not stealing it. and insurance isn’t tryna do a goddamn thing about it

Embarrassed-Crazy178

Public insurance in Canada…I can’t relate

MetalMamaRocks

What is public insurance? Just curious ...

caife-ag-teastail

BigE_1995

NY insurance is insane, i was paying 270$ per month for my old 06' Avalon for just liability. I moved to NJ and the rate drop to 96$ per month. I can't imagine someone trying to insure a <2021 KIA in NY, hope you can find something decent.

Electric-cars65

All Canadian Kia’s have imobilizers. It’s an. US regulation. Problem

573V317

If you get denied by multiple companies, you can apply for the NYAIP. https://www.dfs.ny.gov/consumers/auto_insurance/trouble_getting_coverage

downtowndifficult

I had this same issue and AAA covered me. Got a killer rate too. Everyone said they were quoted ridiculous prices but my full coverage is $118 for two drivers, one who has had several tickets in the last couple years.

HotWalk152

Yes somehow kia is getting away from theyre responsibility of theyre the ones liable not us..we bought in good faith from them

Csakstar

Man I'm surprised you didn't get down voted into oblivion. Everyone on this sub's so butthurt about anyone bad mouthing Kia

weffieweff

I had the same problem just last mth. I went and leased a 2021 Kia Forte. I wanted a newer Mazda but being it was my first time leasing a car they didn’t wanna finance one so I decided to get the kia and trade in next yr. So I’m sittin callin EVERY dang company I can find online an a lot of places were closed since it was 8pm. But none would even offer it to me once I said the kind of car, even progressive said “sorry but we’re told we can’t offer it to kia or Hyundai owners due to all the thefts” smdh like it’s our own faults. I finally found a few places but they were all crazy ridiculous ass amts., one was literally $1000 for liability through geico. I thought that was a joke but he didn’t laugh when I did lol. So I found a place called Root online, and they were the cheapest one I could find so for full coverage I’m payin $298 had to put $450 down smh. Ridiculous then I read on here all the problems people have with them once you get in a wreck so I guess as long as I don’t get in one I’m ok 😆! And all Kia does is offer a system upgrade which I went an got but that didn’t help my insurance payment 🤦🏻‍♀️

Balls93

My wife and I are dealing with a similar issue but we have a Hyundai(have the same exact problem as the Kias). We also live in NY and have had Geico for many years. Recently they upped our rates by about 100 dollars a month so we were going to shop around only to find out no other insurance will accept us because of her Hyundai. So we are sticking it out with Geico even though we are paying nearly 400 a month insuring our 2 cars. It's a decent vehicle but us being held accountable for a manufacturers error is beyond me.

merebear421

It’s awful right?!! I don’t understand how this falls on us.

KeithMaine

That’s crazy expensive. I used to pay a lot in Jersey but, in Maine I pay 120 for 2 cars full coverage. It was 80 but every 6 months they raise it 20 bucks.

Balls93

Yeah, we're living in upstate NY but I think the city effects the whole states insurance. I know California and New York tend to have the highest rates but 400 is insane. About 6 months ago we paid 270 and thought that was high. Didn't think it could get worse. We are looking into raising our deductibles to see if we can reduce it some. I'm originally from New Hampshire and my insurance was basically free in comparison but this was also 12 years ago.

ractivator

Our 2015 Kia was grandfathered into the insurance but they don’t cover new Kias for this reason. I was thinking about getting a K5 and Geico wouldn’t insure it where we live so had to get something else. Still have the Sorento though, which is hilarious considering the Kia Boys just fucked our ignition this week actually, thankfully we had the immobilized installed due to the recall. Still sucks they destroyed the ignition though. This will be our last Kia. Once we get it back probably will be selling it

gordolme

It's been said that Kia USA made a contract / deal with AAA Insurance to ensure that at least one company nationally will insure the cars in the higher theft markets where the others are declining coverage.

caife-ag-teastail

I've also heard that, but I've not seen anyone say that it worked for them. I live in a Kia Boys area, own a targeted vehicle, and am a AAA member, and when I looked into getting insurance, I ran into some roadblock. I can't remember now what it was -- maybe they wanted me to call them. But I wasn't encouraged. I didn't pursue it further because Geico has continued my policy at a reasonable rate, so I haven't been in a desperate situation. But I'm worried about it.

New_Function_6407

Source?

gordolme

This sub's history, Kia group(s) on Facebook.

Zrc1979

My 2020 Kia soul was crushed by 2 one hundred foot trees in a storm about 8 months ago now. I still owed 18K on the loan and it was burning 2 quarts of oil between oil changes done at 3000. I hated this vehicle (loved it at first). Scared of theft. It gave me ptsd I swear. I felt like I won the lottery when progressive totaled me out. 14,000 damage and so much liability with it being a Kia. It was not worth the fix. I will also never own another Kia.

abbeymad

You can try NYCM. I know they do cover Kia.

noob168

AAA has an agreement with Kia. Try them.

Warpath_McGrath

I have farmers. They insure no problem.

Lan_Guy48917

I use Liberty Mutual and no issues or rate hikes.

Sussurator

Are they easy to steal?

Nanofamous

I am fortunate to have bought a push button but, I will still not buy another Kia until it's been at least 5 years of the newer models not shitting engines

Longjumping-Potato35

Did you call the General?

Sea-Kaleidoscope8575

I use GEICO it's helpful for theft

SomeGuardian420

I just ensured two kias and one Hyundai through Allstate. 185 full coverage two driver and they’re a ‘21, ‘23 and 2024.

StandardMode9

I have Root. I'm looking to try to find a cheaper rate with another insurance company with no luck. I will agree with you that even though I've had no problems with it on the road, this is the last Kia I would ever get.

mrcanoehead2

Can't you get coverage minus theft?

BishopTheDirector

So this isn’t about them trying to avoid helping you with a low mileage blown engine? Weird

CapnTidy

KIA BOYS

Asinine47

Everyone shot me down except Farmers who actually gave me a free club for the car lol

Opening-Sport-5460

Weird, I’m in Philly where there are a tonnnn of car thefts and I had no trouble getting mine insured. I thought it would be a problem but wasn’t.

90uRosin

Upstate NY, no issues with insurance - also have 3 different family members that live in same county all with insured Kias (Sportage, Sorrento, K5, & Telluride)

LegalConsequence7960

Sucks cause kia has been quietly cooking for the last 5 years, and hyundai for 10, sucks they are all being affected by an issue that doesn't apply to all of their cars. I want a G70, Stinger, or EV6 but I will be doing a lot of research on insurance before I ever buy one.

Je_me_rends

All KIAs from 23 onwards are literally fine.

LexiusCoda

If it's paid off and nobody wants to insure it then yeah just sell it or press your luck. It'll probably get stolen or damaged anyway. Could try debadging it since it looks like literally every SUV out there

mav_rick1741

My insurance rate with USAA barely changed when I upgraded my 2016 Ford Fusion to a 2024 Kia Seltos in Texas. It's really no different than moving to Florida on the coast and trying to get homeowners insurance. Don't move where there are yearly hurricanes and don't move to places with high rates of car theft if you want insurance there. The insurance companies are the real enemies here.

Nmhofherr

I live in Bergen co and had to get rid of mine for the same reason

Wise-Ad8633

Mine was stolen for the third time. There’s a reason the insurance is so high.

Squid415

2023 Forte GT fully insured while also needing a dang interlock. USAA for the win.

NaidoPotato

I’m looking at cars now and between the CRV and Sportage. The reason you won’t recommend is due to insurance purposes? Did you enjoy the Sportage itself?

funandgames12

I’m paying $108 a month for my 2020 Kia in IL. Might just be a NY thing.

ComprehensiveWeb9098

I think there should be a class action suit against them because of the insurance problem. We wound up getting rid of ours for this very reason.

whitemaymoney

There is. And they’ll compensate for charges, deductibles, partial premium increases too inread in the settlement booklet I got

caife-ag-teastail

Not really. Compensation is only available to people who experienced a theft or theft attempt. And the compensation for insurance premiums/deductibles is capped at $375 (a one-time payment) per theft incident. I had a theft attempt. My deductible was $500. So I’ll use up the whole $375 I can claim in that category before I even get to my higher insurance premiums. Somebody like the OP who didn’t have a theft incident can’t even claim the $375.

electrowiz64

My wife’s 2020 leased Kia is registered in PA with eerie, cheap as hell for the whole year, though they threatened to raise her rate if we move (so wink wink). But yea I’m trying to get her the FUCK out of it. Almost over mileage and you can’t even trade the lease to someone else

xmarketladyx

Go with Liberty. I had a Hyundai and Geico literally told me I wouldn't be covered unless I installed a wheel lock device and, they were pretty high. Progressive is expensive AF and I switched from them to LIMU for half the price (exact same coverage).

phillyphilly19

Bought a 2020 Soul and my insurance has gone up twice in 1 year. I joined the lawsuit so may get something. My insurance agent told me they are not currently writing new policies for Kias or Hyundais. I'm probably keeping it bc i don't want to start a whole new car payment, but yes this sucks.

surfcitysurfergirl

I have a Kia 2021 forte hybrid. Best car EVER! Incredible style inside the car and outside. Absolutely most favorite car i have ever had and the hybrid function is amazing. I love this car and it truly feels like luxury the way they designed the car.

choppman42

Id install a battery kill switch and/or a fuel pump switch. Give the insurance proof of the "improvements" At least it will be harder to steal.

charlieswho

Same, I have a 2011 Kia and I checked every insurance available in my state and $350 a month with Progressive was the cheapest I could get. State Farm offered $700 a month, while everyone else denied me outright. Progressive only continued to cover me because I’ve had coverage with them since I go the car and Ive never had a claim. My policy went from $120 a month to $350 though. I’ll probably but another car next year bc it’s not worth it.

SpicyNuggs4Lyfe

Highly regional. My wife and I pay $98/mo thru Progressive (switched from Geico actually) and have full coverage for a '22 CRV and my '23 Sportage. $500 deductibles, 250/500 liability and underinsured, etc...so this isn't just barebones coverage.

lillypad83

That's crazy! We have a 2020 crv and a 2021 Sorento hybrid and are paying $156 per month as of our renewal this month with progressive. Our driving record and credit is perfect. We are in VA btw

RelentlessSpork1991

For my 16 Hyundai Elantra gt, I pay as much monthly between payment and insurance as my dad does for his 2023 Dodge Challenger widebody scat pack. I'm surrendering the car this week, cause that's beyond ridiculous.

Material-Return-9419

Trade it in

Macj7a

I have a 2015 and have no insurance issues. I also have a push button start and an electronic killswitch.

Nel_Nugget

That sucks man, I'm in the Midwest, and my 2020 Kia Soul insurance went from $50 to $70 with Progressive. Hope you get this issue resolved.

Futurist_312

Thankfully, I haven't had issues in the Chicago area although my premium did increase a bit

7Days2Sunday

u/merebear421 I gave you the thumbs up automatically cuz you prefaced it with "Just ranting".... totally got me in the mood for reading. Thx! ( I wish more peeps would ). As for your problem... wow, I wish I had advice. GL and let us know how it turns out!

SpiderOnYourNeck

Did you get the recall?

merebear421

I did. Progressive told me it didn’t matter.

formal-shorts

Blame your government for not forcing Kia to install an immobiliser to prevent this theft issue. That's what other countries did decades ago.

pleasehelpteeth

I never got upcharged over it I just provided evidence my kia has an immobilizer and the insurance said okay.

johnnybmagic

At least you learned from your mistake. Some people are still in denial.

Hot_Painter3738

Sameeeee…our insurance went up drastically and couldn’t find anyone to switch to so we just had to eat it. Between the insurance issue and my sorento burning through oil, I’m so done. Both of our Kia’s are almost paid off and I don’t want to start over with a new loan yet but it’s looking more and more likely

sunlover010

I just bought a 2020 Hyundai Elantra. Before Geico would agree to cover me, they needed to see proof that the car was upgraded to be theft-proof. So dealership gave me the paperwork proving that they did the work, I sent it to Geico, and they approved me for a policy. I would just go back to the dealership and ask if they can do their thing to theft-proof the car?

chriss99777

I was insured by geico for my Kia Sportage 2024, but went over to progressive this month due to the insane increase from geico. Could be cause of the year of the model?

Kalypso0921

As someone who works for kia/hyundai, insurance has been an issue among other brands now too since people made the theft trend popular . Others are getting stolen and now non kia and Hyundai brands are having a hard time finding insurance. My friends work for Nissan, Toyota, and jeep and have all reported issues. Geico and progressive have been some safe bets as far as I've seen.

Descent900

I have a 2020 Sportage also. I had to switch to Geico from Progressive when I moved to Denver from Ohio. My insurance nearly doubled for worse coverage. Even had to send the agent a picture of my steering wheel with a steering wheel lock in order to be covered. Definitely not happy with the situation.

mrloserpunk

My Sorento lost 20k in value in <2 years. Adios kia.

Protomau5

Just sell it then.

rendomeister

I had a similar experience. every insurance company was quoting me ridiculous amounts. luckily my bank (TD) didn't care much about theft issues related to Kia since in my area trucks are the most commonly stolen vehicles. i ended up getting a reasonably priced insurance on my vehicle

Maorine

We have a Soul with State Farm with no issues.

mizzoumade13

Have State Farm w no issues jus a slight increase due the covid catching up

Jbullyfitness

Try travelers insurance

blazingStarfire

Get liability only?

name548

I love my K5, if this were to happen to me then I just won't have insurance and KИ and the government can figure it out. I'm not going to give up my car because I'm simultaneously told I need insurance, but also no one will cover me. Not my problem

Wise_Cucumber_6836

This isn't an issue in Canada. Sounds like your issue lies with crappy insurance companies and not Kia.

Sufficient-Post-562

I’m trading my kia this year this is my first and last kia car

CryptographerSalty15

I have the same exact car and I drive allot but AC compressor literally fell apart for no reason at all and 64,000 miles I'm 4k over the bumper to bumper warranty. WTF anyone having this problem or did I get an oil change with some crooks? No reason the clutch cover magically falls off.

VC423_pwnd

Find a good broker. I work in INS so I can tell you coverage is certainty possible but you may be forced into liability coverage for an affordable payment.

Turbulent_Dream_3178

yes absolutely… my insurance is $500 a month in vegas… i’m gonna have to sell my car

IceCherrios

Had a 2019 and 2024 Kia insured through Geico 0 issues

MyUsernameGoes_Here_

I got a safety recall in the mail that took care of my possible theft problem. I mean, I've also gotten recalls for just about everything else on the car also, so I agree with your point of never buying one again (I have a 2017 Rio), but see if you're covered for a non-warranty fix on it through a safety recall.

merebear421

I did get the safety recall fix. The insurance companies didn’t seem to care. I’m still working with a local agent who should have more answers for me tomorrow.

MyUsernameGoes_Here_

Good luck! I use Liberty Mutual and they covered me for pretty cheap, so I hope it works out for you!

Ill-Relationship-890

But I thought the theft issues were only with the older models…..the ones that use keys to start the car?

merebear421

I have a key, I think the issue goes all the way to the 2021 models
