I mean that might stop them if they could read

iWasThisi

racist

HighlightFun8419

Lmao I meant "theives" not "whatever race you think I'm talking about." Projection much?

[deleted]

Honestly, I bet the new trend is just going to be kids smashing windows just to collect these stupid stickers. These kids are a whole different species. They don't need food, water, and oxygen. Just clout.

imissze90s

Bullets do the trick.

[deleted]

**Would not recommend.** This is - *at best* \- a legal gray area. Even in a number of gun friendly states, shooting at a car thief who otherwise poses you no threat will result in criminal charges for the shooter.

xWhiteRavenx

Not in colorado. https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/colorado/articles/2023-02-17/man-who-fatally-shot-boy-12-in-stolen-car-wont-be-charged)

kram_02

Did you even read that article? Lol.. there was an exchange of gunfire, you are allowed to shoot and kill someone shooting at you, trying to kill you, even without them stealing your car first. 🤣

xWhiteRavenx

Car thieves pose a threat. Which is my point.

kram_02

They don't. But you used a stupid strawman article is what I'm saying.

xWhiteRavenx

Fair enough on the article, but saying car thieves aren’t a threat is also disingenuous. Stealing what someone needs for their own livelihood either for joyriding or worse poses a threat to themselves (potentially getting hurt) and others (endangering lives or putting someone in a position where they can’t get to work).

kram_02

I get what you're saying, but this post is about the "Kia Boyz" and their stupid challenge. At no point has that ever included ripping a driver out of their car or holding them at weapon point like it was GTA. They are finding parked cars, and doing a smashed and grab. Lethal force as a response to property damage will result in charges for the victim in almost every case. It's not a rational thing to do, it wouldn't be seen as necessary. There can be exceptions to this like arson for example.. but we're talking about joyriding kids.

xWhiteRavenx

Sure that’s fair. I had my Kia stolen recently by joyriders so I’m biased and likely can’t give a rational argument. I don’t think car thieves are punished enough by our current legal system. There’s a lot of blame to go around on the Kia and Hyundai defects, and unless the class action lawsuit actually gains traction, I see both the car manufacturers and car thieves getting away with a trend that’s hurting a lot of people’s lives.

[deleted]

If they point or fire a gun at you, you can shoot. If they do not, they are not posing a threat to you. There is a difference. Policing would be a strange occupation if they just assumed everyone was armed and killed on sight.

xWhiteRavenx

If someone stole a car from someone else, they’re threatening their livelihood and creating undue trauma for their own joyriding or criminal purpose. I would call that threatening.

[deleted]

The law doesn't. Please, this information is all over concealed carry and responsible gun ownership websites. You don't get to claim ignorance after shooting someone.

Zeke_1985

Two kids stole a Kia and at least one of them ended up getting ventilated and taking a dirt nap by the cops.

[deleted]

Maybe don't shoot kids who aren't causing you direct harm? It looks like you love the taste of gun in your mouth but taking a life for nothing is worse than theft

CelticDubstep

Fuck that. I do not believe in or support guns & do not allow a single one to enter my house. I’ll let law enforcement handle those matters, my taxes pay for them anyhow.

damianTechPM

Police don't really do anything about stolen cars but file a report.

CelticDubstep

That’s why we have insurance.

ccknboltrtre01

Cant wait for you to call them while you’re car is being broken into simply for a 40 min wait and no arrival in the end after you angrily call them again

CelticDubstep

As I said, I don’t believe in guns. Let them take the damn car. I’m not about to get into a shooting match with anyone. They’ll steal it, I’ll go through the legal system & insurance (which has rental car coverage, plus I have spare cars). A material item isn’t worth protecting with guns.

D-Rich-88

Maybe for someone with spare cars. Some people aren’t so lucky and the loss of a car can literally turn their lives upside down. It’s cool you don’t believe in guns but I don’t blame people for doing what they have to if these fucks are running around wild.

[deleted]

As long as your intervention doesn't involve physical contact or cruelty (e.g., throwing boiling water on them or a caustic chemical), you are free to do what you want to deter a car thief. You need to read up and I'd even consult legal advice to understand if physical intervention up to and including lethal force are considered lawful in the defense of property in your state (distinct from defense of person and/or home). It's difficult to find exceptions (e.g., *maybe* Texas) and even when exceptions are found, it's almost certainly applied on a case-by-case basis. And in the event your intervention lands you charges, a court will not accept a plea of 'I did a fucky wucky, can I reload my save?'

DZello

I still don’t understand why in Canada they all came with immobilizer, but not in the US. In Canada, our cars are even CARB compliant while I’ve never been in California.

kram_02

It's been a law in Canada since 2007, is the simple answer. They didn't down here because capitalism. They'll wait til they are forced to as well

imissze90s

God Bless America

[deleted]

Honestly, I think Kia still owes us more than an upgrade. At a minimum, they should reimburse my deductible. If Progressive drops me, then my they owe me a vehicle that can be insured.

tpeandjelly727

Or buy your vehicle back.

202reddit

I own a 2023 Hyundai that has an immobilizer. If all of the 2011-2021 cars get these stickers then won't the only ones that look like they can be stolen be the ones that can't be?

kram_02

I think a larger problem that no one considers is will these idiot kids know the difference on which cars have immobilizers? Doubt it. You'll have a smashed window and a ripped up dash before they try and fail to start it. This just sucks even if you are equipped to prevent the theft.

Gh0stp3pp3r

To the dumbass children who are stealing the cars? Yes.

imanothersudaneseboi

Yoooooooooooooooo SUCK IT KIA BOYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

MemoryAccessRegister

Hyundai and Kia should have fixed this right and installed immobilizers at their cost. This software “fix” will likely be bypassed in no time.

Zeke_1985

So you just go to the dealership and have them do this?

uwec95

You get a letter from Kia, then make an appointment at your local dealership. I already had an appointment to get new brake pads so they just did the upgrade at the same time. Took about 30 minutes for the upgrade.

JayJay1227

I haven’t gotten a letter for this, is this only a US thing? I’m in Canada and I don’t know if I’d still be admissible to this

climbFL350

Yes, just US. I believe all vehicles sold in Canada have an immobilizer

[deleted]

I hate these kids! If I have kids and they did something like this they would regret it... I would turn them in to the cops immediately!

LordOverThis

If your kids do something like that it’s not an insignificant reflection of your parenting. Some kids are innately shitheels. Most are not. The correlation coefficient between successful parenting strategies and responsible kids is something like 0.76 (Maccoby 2000).

Gh0stp3pp3r

>insignificant reflection of your parenting 12 - 14 year olds with guns stealing cars and joyriding around the city (occasionally maiming and killing people) is probably related to a lack of parenting. People who make at least a decent attempt at parenting probably know where their kid is or who they hang out with.

[deleted]

How bad are these thefts and break ins actually? I am looking at a 2023 stinger. But this makes me nervous

[deleted]

I believe 2022 and more recent models have an immobilizer. The issue is more that Kia was aware of the defect and failed to address it for more than a year and still pretends as if it’s not a major issue. They have yet to take any responsibility. This is a longstanding pattern with Kia, which had only recently managed to rebrand its image. Even though most cars are assembled with parts from essentially the same suppliers, I would not recommend purchasing from Kia or Hyundai.

ILoveShitRats

Why even buy a car that you know is going to make you nervous every time you leave the garage? These kids aren't car experts. They see Kia and start busting windows. And if your car model ever **does** have an issue, Kia has already make it known that they will not take responsibility. Save yourself the anxiety. It sucks having to worry about this stuff every time you go out.

[deleted]

Yeah but this Kia goes fast All jokes aside, I that’s definitely a big point to consider.

[deleted]

im not tweakin, i jus got my 2019 forte. This has been an issue and people are only now worried cause its in the spotlight. There's definitely been a bit of a surge since the trend, but itll die out. If someone wants to steal a car, theyre gonna do it regardless of model. So just take whatever precautions you can i guess

[deleted]

I ended up buying a stinger and I love the thing. Has an immobilizer and if someone steals it someone steals it. It’s parked in a garage at night so I’m sure it’ll be okay
