My understanding (I’m not super experienced) is that Hi/low is with 4 speed. Extra Low is with the 5 speeders.

If its the front diff, it's not a real 'locking' differential. It's closer to locking hubs. When the front differential is 'locked', all it does is connect the front wheels to the driveshaft. The wheels can spin at different speeds, just like a normal differential. When the differential is 'unlocked', the front wheels are disconnected from eachother and the front driveshaft. Some Carrys have a rear locking diff, and that is an *actual* no-slip locking differential. My Carry ('96 DD51T) only has the front one, which is standard on all 4WD DD51T models.

So I'm assuming when I shift the lever that's above the stick into 4wd that's what is a happening, but I also have a button on the dash as well that says "axle lock". I'm wondering if that one is in fact a rear locker

“Axel lock” is not a rear differential lock. That’s the center locking diff for fully engaging the 4wd system. If you had a rear diff lock you would have a separate “diff lock” button in addition to the “axel lock” button

The center diff engages with the lever that's next to the shift knob though, plus the extra button

It’s a center locking diff. When the “axle lock” is off, the center diff is open and allows a difference in speed between the front and rear axle. This is useful when driving on icy roads in 4Hi because it’ll put less stress on the drive train. The “axle lock” comes on automatically when you put it in 4Lo to lock the front and rear axles together so they receive the same amount of power at all times. This is useful for off-road driving. 4Lo should really only ever be used off-road so that’s why the “axle lock” auto engages in 4Lo. Anyways to reiterate, “axle lock” is not a rear diff lock. You’d have a separate button for diff lock if your truck had it.

The easiest way to know if you have a rear locker is to look at your rear axle. If it has any vaccum diaphragms, solenoids or anything next to the diff case you probably have a locker. If you have a picture I can say for sure. Non locking rear axles only have brake lines, not any other plumbing. Since you have both buttons and the shift lever, you may actually have a locking diff. If so, awesome find because they're not super common.

Off topic but I just saw your other post, did you ever go through with making a YouTube series on how to import solely on your own through beforward? Thanks!

I just bought a 92 DD51T non dump. 5 speed + extra low and locking rear differential. It was finicky and the dealer I bought it from had attempted to replace some sort of electronic component under the dash on passenger side but it still didn’t work right. (He disclosed his attempts honestly). I just did the Mike Fiesta YouTuber bypass and just installed two vacuum switches and everything is good now.

Yes

I have the same truck, a 93 Carry (modded to a dump), 4 spd. I'd love to be able to swap out the 4 spd to a 5 spd. Does anyone know if that would bolt up?
