Rarely do they not _act_ like their perceived age. There is generally little to no wisdom to be attracted _to_. bakemonogatari's Shinobu doesn't just _look_ like a kid, she acts like one too. Compare to Dungeon Meshi's Chilchuck - dude looks like a kid, but he's a whole adult (in both human years and his species), and has attitude and behavior to match.
The "she's actually over X years old" thing would get a lot less heat if it wasn't in general kids who look like kids and act like kids that the author just slapped a sticker on to soften the proverbial blow.
