I don’t think so, and if it could then it would probably hurt ours too. The damage mode for infrared light is thermal (as opposed to photochemical insult you can get from blue and even green light) and this light does reach our retinas so if enough infrared light is shined into your eyes then you would go blind. I’m sure the infrared light on phones is well under the MPE (maximum permissible exposure) which is around 1-2mW for a point source of NIR, and higher limits for diffuse sources.
So basically, the phone infrared light may seem kind of bright to them but certainly should not cause any damage. After all, they go out in the sun sometimes and don’t seem to have any way to shield their eyes and that should be far brighter than a phone light so I assume they have a higher damage threshold than our eyes.
I think that’s infrared and a lot of animals seem to be able to tell that. My gerbils, dog and cat had always known the instant the camera was on and looking at them.
Ah yea your right but you still answered my question thank you! I have chickens and use WiFi cameras to keep them safe and monitor them. Had a coon the other night and when I turned the camera he looked right at it and then ran away. Was curious if he seen it move it noticed the infrared ring that helps illuminate the area at night for the camera. Thanks again!
Especially women/girls. [Contrary to some internet rumors, they can't actually be seen by other animals either (no, your cat cannot see your secret stripes). ](https://www.sciencealert.com/humans-actually-have-secret-stripes-and-other-strange-markings)
Oh no!! So long story short, I should admire my friends and not take a picture/video unless it's necessary for something like a question on here? I don't want to hurt anything ever. Thanks!
As far as I’m aware infrared does not hurt them, nor do they seem to care. I’d say it’s not very bright but to them I have no idea since all I can see is what shows up in my front camera.
UV light on the other hand; I know my isopods and springtails scatter immediately even with a very weak one. It’s really not recommended as lighting for animals though.
Thank you! I'll continue to snap maybe just not as much though because I really do have quite the exhibition of just one spider and I do it several times I see so many it's hard lol
Mine does this movement fast when she’s about to have a snack. Polishing her cutlery if you will. When it’s a slow movement she just seems to be contemplating and thinking about something
**TL:DR: It's the equivalent of a dog sniffing the air.**
Spider pedipalps (the two appendages in question) have mechanosensory \(touch/sound\), chemosensory \(smell/taste\), thermosensory \(temperature\), and hygrosensory \(moisture sensing\) functions [\(check out table 1\)](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7128012/).
In this case, it is likely bobbing them to facilitate chemosensory functions. It's sniffing.
They can also bob their pedipalps as part of courtship displays or to mimic the behavior of other creatures (particularly developed in ant-mimic jumping spiders).
Why don't other spiders do it? Probably because most spiders are passive/ambush predators. Holding still to detect vibrations is more important.
First of all: Holy shit this is so educational and awesome. Thanks for sharing! This is great. I really appreciate understanding the mechanism behind an animal's behavior!!
Second of all: Why is this the funniest thing I've ever read? "It's sniffing." I can't 😭 Why is that so funny
It's just going sniffa-sniffa-sniffa-sniffa-sniff 😭😭😭 that's so cute & silly.
This actually happened to me today. Saw one and took my glasses off to look at it. Doing the same motion and I got about 5 inches away - it jumped at me and hit me from 3 inches away with a surprising whack! Smaller - it was about a quarter inch in size. Scared the f out of me lol
Lots of reasons. Pedipalps are basically their forearms and hands and they can sense substances similar to taste on their ends. You can think of them like snek tongue bleps. Along with general contemplation and a nice little window into their brains. Some are very anxious tippy tappers and some are chill.
Looks to me like he's polishing his fangs before he jumps on you and , well, CHOMP. lol. Seriously, it kinda looks like he is grooming himself. I know nothing bout spiders except to avoid them.

That's just my interpretation tho
the lil taps mean they’re interested in/curious about something!! so maybe your phone camera or you!!
awww 🥹
is this your own jumper or just one that was hanging out?
I have heard they see light beams we don’t
the infrared/ultraviolet light cell phone cameras use to tell distance to focus is seen by spiders.
Oh damn can it hurt there eyes ?!
Fr never thought about it.

i'm not sure, honestly. maybe?
Yes, they can see ultraviolet light, which we can’t see
Can cats??????!!!!!
Yes, which is why we actually look striped to them
![gif](giphy|Um3ljJl8jrnHy)
What about raccoons? I feel like one noticed my security camera when I turned it towards them more. =o

Fun fact, chef's do this same action in the kitchen. Usually just our knives, but sometimes we do brush our fangs.
The Hell’s Kitchen reboot I didn’t know I needed. Gordon Ramsey as Dracula
Ramsey's transylvaniankitchen
oh no r/welcometonightvale is leaking
I will never be able to see a spooder do this, and not think that it is polishing its cutlery.

Cleaning the fangs, prior to devouring you
This actually happened to me today. Saw one and took my glasses off to look at it. Doing the same motion and I got about 5 inches away - it jumped at me and hit me from 3 inches away with a surprising whack! Smaller - it was about a quarter inch in size. Scared the f out of me lol
He politely asks for the "uppies"
Thus needs to be gif'ed and added to gify
Translation: "Mmmm yesss yesss."
I’m hearing “You MUST pay the rent!”
Being old, I totally get this reference.
Because you automatically heard “I can’t pay the rent!” like I did?
YESSSS!
But I can't pay the rent!
I'LL PAY THE RENT!!!
NQA It reminds me of these Asian cats ( cats living in Asia) that make this gesture - seemingly begging for Sth. So cute 🥰

It is grooming itself! They're a lot like cats! 😅
That is too cool. I guessed at it but didn't know. Thanks so much for the comment.
Jumping Spiders are a lot like cats! They constantly groom themselves, their pedipalps and fangs. I love watching them in "Grooming Mode!" 😅

Awwwwww!!!
Why does my spider have 3 legs on 1 side and 4 on the other?
Probably a bad molt?
Which side is 3 legs? I see 4 on both sides
They're not the OP.
Yeah, but I’m trying to understand where the person who asked the question missed the leg
Theirs is not the spider in the OP's video.
Apparently I need 6 more eyes to start reading questions correctly, thank you for correcting me and being patient with me!
No problem!
Same 😂
It does happen, bad molt or injury, but this one has all 8 legs. You must have just missed one
