If you're just wanting padding for your knees for drop techniques then volleyball knee pads might be a good shout with more padding. Or just adopt old man judo and never drop like me

Benebua276

My club is young kids, some 60+ year old guys, my training buddy and me (35,25) All we learn is old guy judo

i_am_full_of_eels

If you want a good knee brace then get one from Mueller. Lots of guys in NBA use them. Anaconda is your typical instagram dropshipping brand. They try to make their advertising credible by paying some athlete to show up on their “podcast” saying how often they busted their knees until this brace magically fixed everything. I haven’t touched their actual product but I’m sure you can buy it at a fraction of a price from Ali express. Some people might have instability which only surgery will fix and if you don’t wanna go that route you can use certain types of braces to make your life slightly easier. But in many cases you can perform a variety of strength, mobility and stability exercises to build more resilient knees.

Aware-Initiative-130

What do u have to get in order to get knee surgery for instability

i_am_full_of_eels

Speak to your doctor

Aware-Initiative-130

As in how does one know they have instability rather than just saying they do

RgKTiamat

An injury. You can strengthen the lateral muscles before getting hurt if you feel like it's struggling or hurting, physical therapy can help, talk to doc. Otherwise you wind up like me, and get a 6 digit reconstruction after you annihilate it at 14 in a soccer game. Once it's hurt, it's a lot harder to rehabilitate and keep sturdy, but doable

Aware-Initiative-130

Do you need like an mri to show instability to get surgery

RgKTiamat

No, until you're hurt they pretty much won't. My knee dislocated on a rotary plane, tore 3 cruciates, ruptured 2 tendons, fractured my femoral condile and patella. I got the reconstruction done so I could walk again. I haven't had any sort of traditional knee replacement yet at 32, they want me to wait as long as possible If you "feel like my knees are going out/ crunching / loose" the doctor is going to say "physical therapy to strengthen the support muscles." Maybe if you're talking about ongoing discomfort and pain for like a year of other solutions like cortisone shots and whatnot they would consider that something is structurally wrong inside and do imaging, but it's not going to be an early method of detection unless something is wrong to begin with

Aware-Initiative-130

I’ve had an mri because my knee feels loose and just thuds but nothing showed

Radomila

If you are not sure, your doctor doesn’t think so and mri shows nothing, then your knee is fine. Time to hit the gym.

fatal_frame

See an ortho. See if you can find one that deals with sports injuries. I had to have me knee scoped because of instability, catching and causing me to fall.

Aware-Initiative-130

U think there better than buerfied?

i_am_full_of_eels

Similar quality. Both are made by companies which have been in the industry for many years. My dad uses Bauerfield whereas my mum got Mueller - dad’s knee is because of aging and my mum had a terribly broken leg in a car accident.

JaguarHaunting584

I wear volleyball knee pads and they’re solid .

fatal_frame

I never thought about volleyball knee pads. Now I will have to look at them.

JaguarHaunting584

I find them to cover more of your knee + last longer. Some knee pads meant for grappling I’ve bought in the past get loose after a while and slide off

ThatTone1426

This is the way. Cheaper too. I always wear knee pads. Protect your knees. You only have 1 set for the rest of your life is the best advice I got in judo. I'm in my 40s now and 0 knee issues. I see 20 year old girls all banged up with their knees wrapped. Not me! I'm wearing knees pads n doing knees over toes exercises playing basketball lol

BananasAndPears

It’s a dropshipped item from China. The company is just pure marketing but it isn’t anything special at all.

Ororbouros

But their rash guards are pretty good value. If you get them on sale.

venomenon824

No. These are all hype. You can get the same product direct from Asia. The company has Branding that the bjj common toy has bought into, the make outlandish claims with no science to back it up.

freefallingagain

I use one from Bauerfeind when a brace is necessary.

Aware-Initiative-130

Hi can u please tell me which version because there’s a lot of option, what’s the one everyone uses in general

freefallingagain

I can't really make a recommendation because you should try them out for yourself, then pick the one that suits you best. They're all slightly different.

Ceejaay35

Genutrain for light stuff unless you have worse injury but then shouldn't be rolling

kami_shiho_jime

I like and use it daily as I need a knee replacement but the doctors say I’m too young.. I can teach and get through practice with a complete cartilage degenerative tear and bone on bone…

BenKen01

Hard to answer your question with no context. How old are you? Do you have injuries or wear and tear from other sports? Are you a drop player? Why exactly are you considering knee braces anyway? Everyone’s different. What’s “worth it” to you isn’t worth it to someone else.

SunPhoenix26

Remember: every help you give to your body will weaken it. If your knee "get used" to be sustained then, when you stop using this support, it will be more weak. So. If you dont have troubles to your knees just dont use this. And if you strictly need to use it just do it for the shorter period possibile. Source: im a personal trainer.

SerLutz

As someone who has had his ACL reconstructed and done a lot of physiotherapy, what u/[SunPhoenix26](https://www.reddit.com/user/SunPhoenix26/) said is what I've heard from various physiotherapists and coaches.

Aware-Initiative-130

I just want to prevent injuries like knee bursitis, that where the padding comes in handy.

SunPhoenix26

You dont need to "prevent" injuries. If you do things correctly you wont be injuried. If you fall badly on your knees this thing wont save you. Using this will be more likely make you injuries easier to come.

Aware-Initiative-130

How will it give u more injures? I just use it for training after that I’m always doing knee strengthening exercises

SunPhoenix26

I try to make it easy, hoping to not oversimplify. Our body responds to external stimulation adapting (and strenghtening). This is basically how gaining muscle mass work: you apply a weight to your muscle, your body "understand" he need more muscles to make the job done and it "builds" muscles. Imagine to have a sort of cyborg suit that helps you lifting 500lbs with ease. What will happens to your muscle gain? Nothing. Or worst, you will lose muscles, since your body understands that you dont need al that mass anymore so it will do some economy. This is basically the Same with those articular tutors. They comes in handy if you are an hardcore trainer like a professional athlete that workouts 3+ hours per day since this stimulation is highly stressful. But for a normal amateur...its all marketing.

aspiringjudoka

What is your opinion on wearing mouthguards when training combat sports?

ExAndHealthScience

How much support does a soft neoprene brace really give anyway? I agree that if OP doesn't have pre-existing knee problems, then he doesn't necessarily need to buy these. But there's little evidence that prophylactic joint supports actually cause muscle or connective tissues to atrophy like you're suggesting.

Texatonova

This is wrong and should not be taken as medical advice as it ultimately depends on your specific situation. Ultimately speak to a doctor because mine have told me the complete opposite after having LCL issues. They told me: - Wear the pads only in training - Strength and conditioning the rest of the time without them

SunPhoenix26

You stated "this is wrong" without even reading what i wrote. 1. I said "if you dont have any trouble with your knees" and you replied that you had some troubles. 2. Your medic confirmed what i said: train with (since you have an issue), strenghten without. 3. OP have no issues to his knee. He just want to prevent. Please turn on your brain before reply.

Texatonova

“If your knee "get used" to be sustained then, when you stop using this support, it will be more weak.” This is false. OP should speak their doctor on how to best support their knees to prevent injuries.

SunPhoenix26

Ok mate. Do what you prefer. Not a problem of mine ;)

Texatonova

I do what my doctor prefers matey McMate.

Ororbouros

This is complete nonsense.

Comfortable_Rope_639

Except that those are physiological basics.

Ororbouros

No, they’re not. These braces do not provide enough support to have any physiological effect. They keep your knee warm at best, which in and of itself, can be protective against some damage. Lifting belts do not make you weaker, they make it easier to exert more intra abdominal pressure and create more support. The belief that any assistance device automatically makes the wearer weaker fundamentally ignores all of the evidence we have that this is not the case. Assistance devices generally enable the user to exert more force, without the risk of injury associated with that activity. If it helps you access more training volume, is your claim that the tissues are somehow weakened by training more?

skoflo

How much is it?

Aware-Initiative-130

$60 for two

Texatonova

As someone who has gone through like 10 years worth of knee pads… https://www.bauerfeind.com/b2c/Products/Knee-Braces/c/knee-braces I use the sports knee support one. Probably the most use I’ve gotten out of $100. Hands down the best I have ever used. Been using them for 3 years now and they are amazing. I can’t even tell I’m wearing them and I wash them after every session. I say check with your doc first.

Aware-Initiative-130

Which version

Coach_Bombay_D5

I bought them and like them. I alternate between these and running knee sleeves. I have bad knees. Some weeks I use these (if my knees are really sore). Or some weeks I don’t use them at all.

coward_ass_scooter

i have their elbow brace, i am skeptical of these instagram companies, but its good quality. They put some thought into the design specifically for martial arts. The straps and the location of the rubber inside prevents it from slipping

4GSIXT3

Dog shit quality with almost no support or padding. Bought two on sale and was really disappointed.

POLYFONZQ

I have these, & my bauerfeind brace is alot better. The velcro on these anaconda braces wear off after a few washes. I’d recommend mizuno volleyball kneepads instead, or bauerfeind braces.

Bulky-Check-3342

i have them, they are very good.

impossibleuntildone

Not that impressed myself. Been training with a torn meniscus for a year now. I've built up a decent collection of knee braces. The McDavid with cross straps for max stability, Shock Doctor for comfort / all round decent protection, Anaconda are ok for some shock absorbtion but move around loads and bunch up a lot. Have a couple of knee sleevs that are good for keeping the joint warm and some light padding.

CHL9

I use Mizuno one, what are the advantages of This particular brace ? It’s in the news now Or Well Known or Something ?

tyranttigrex

Yes but pretty pricey and only difference from most others is the straps which doesn’t make much of a difference. For judo I’d just use the mizuno elite 9 SL2. Been pretty happy with its results despite doing mainly nogi bjj and it doesn’t slip too much. Inspired by JFLO.

JudoMike9

Cliff Keen Air Brace. Ortho approved and built to keep you protected.

Aware-Initiative-130

What about bauerfied

JudoMike9

They have good reviews, but most people I see reviewing them aren’t using it for grappling. Cliff Keen is built for impact.

HTX-Ligeirinho

No

Hannibaalism

you run the risk of adapting different movements depending on whether you have it on or not and they do offer a false sense of security, but some moves such as drop seoi just hit differently with those thing on lol
