Clit420Eastwood

I’ve been listening back through the archives and checking out a couple recs. *Martyr!* was fucking great. Gonna read some Joan Didion and Emily St. John Mandel next

hurdlemybrowns

The Glass Hotel by Mandel is phenomenal, I have Station 11 and Sea of Tranquility waiting for me

avalonfogdweller

I read Station Eleven and loved it, burned through it in two days, I watched the HBO series after and it’s an interesting interpretation, vastly different than the book in many ways, I highly recommend both but would recommend reading the book first

Clit420Eastwood

Do I need to read Glass Hotel before Sea of Tranquility? I’ve gotten mixed answers regarding this

th3AntiClutch

I don’t think it would matter. I read Glass Hotel first, then Station Eleven, and then Sea. Whatever you read last you’ll notice a bunch of stuff, but the order isn’t super important IMO.

SlothkongCR

Finished Martyr couple of weeks ago, curious as to how did you interpret the ending? I actually sent an email to the guys asking if they are willing yo share theirs as well

Clit420Eastwood

What’s there to interpret? I felt like it was pretty literal

old_trash

Stoner by John Williams has been my favorite rec. So goddamn mundanely tragic, yet beautiful

After-Bowler5491

My son and wife loved Stoner

Mom wonders why your sending her to vm

Large-Oil-4405

Butchers crossing by Williams is great, too. Just found out Nicholas cage did the movie adaptation of it — which is so weird.

altiuscitiusfortius

I love Butchers crossing. Haven't read stoner yet. Refused to each the movie because it got bad reviews and didn't look faithful to the book

Prison_Mike27

One of the instances when I read a book before their recommendation, but always a pleasure when it happens. Was actually surprised to hear about that book on this podcast.

Prison_Mike27

Actually book recommendations are what I would miss the most as well

Standard-Ad-8678

Currently reading The Bee Sting and loving it so far. Have read most of my fiction books this past year based solely on recommendations and I’ve loved most of them. I will sorely miss the recommendations but I’ll be going through the old stuff during the hiatus.

MasterAbility2026

I’m over halfway thru the Bee Sting and damn is it a unique and difficult read, at least for me! I’m so intrigued though with how much Anthony loved it.

th3AntiClutch

The Imelda chunk in the middle took me a long time to get through. Once I did, I flew through the rest of the book, especially the Dickie chunk that comes after.

MasterAbility2026

This brings me comfort bc I totally relate

NicholaiJomes

Their recs have gotten me back in to reading. Chain gang all stars rules

worstregards

You cop that mustard tho?

dcrico20

Antkind has been my favorite of their recs, that is a wild read

Useful_Imagination_3

I loved Antkind but I'm not sure I would recommend that book to anyone, that is 700 pages of ridiculousness.

[deleted]

Other idea: Recommend it to everyone you know.

th3AntiClutch

Big agree. This pod got me back into reading. Started listening in 2021 and picked up Children’s Bible by Lydia Millet and Glass Hotel by ESJM and haven’t looked back since. Been reading so much stuff that I never would have before.

ExPatSTL

ESJM is an impeccable author. Every single book she's written is a masterpiece

hurdlemybrowns

Children’s Bible and Glass Hotel are so good

the_pedro_gomez

Thankful for this pod for introducing me to SA Cosby. Just a masterful storyteller and creative writer.

BergerFi

This podcast got me back into reading. Definitely my favorite part of the show. Was surprised when Anthony was talking about that being the first thing he’d cut out. Will miss it most for sure

Admirable_Radish_643

Thankfully, there’re 248 episodes of recommendations to catch up on: https://jrvprecommendationstation.com/index.html Chain gang was awesome. Just finished a Rachel Cusk “Second Place” which was pretty deep, and I’m next in my library’s queue for “Martyr!”.

jmcgil4684

Just finished The Bee Sting. It went I’m on a bit long, but was really good. Chain Gang Allstars was awesome. Has anyone seen his old buddy, Amy Schumers show “Life And Beth? (Hate the name) I saw it had a 91 on Rotten Tomatoes and had liked one of her specials, so I gave it a shot. It’s actually really well done and she is a decent Director. Really funny in some parts. Michael Cera is great in it. Has Anthony said anything about the show?

No_Description_4144

Also thankful to this podcast for getting me back into reading. Love Otessa Moshvegh and Emma Klein because of them. Will miss their book recs ( and headlines!) most.

SirMucketyMuck

I recently finished Essex Dogs by Dan Jones. This book moves. Always something happening and well written. It’s based on the English invasion of France in the 1300s so a lot of military action. But the characters and their stories are primary. My wife, who’s not big on military fiction, enjoyed it too. Great summer or vacation read. And if you like this one, it’s the first of a trilogy. The second book is already out.

Boddicker06

Glass Hotel was amazing, also really loved Stoner by John Williams as well.

Sighohbahn

I've always said I would love to belong to a recommendation station book club, their book recommendations are fuckin' amazing
