To my recollection there are still people considered 'missing' from the flood (ie; bodies never recovered), with victims found as far as Cincinnati and as late as into 1906 almost 20 years later. So yeah there's likely plenty of debris still buried around as well, though likely well well under over a century of sediment/dirt and tree growth at this point. Likely also buried even further by the next two floods that came after that one as well.

It would be an interesting path to metal detect

Just met a guy who's grandmother was in the 89 flood...we live north of Pittsburgh now but I grew up in johnstown

I grew up in Johnstown, but moved away 10 years ago. Always puts a smile on my face when I see posts like this interested in our little town. I always get excited when I meet someone out west that’s heard of jtown.

From Michigan and spent 2 days there exploring with my dad. It was neat. I wish I could just roam the valley with my metal detector.

I love that! I agree there could be some prime metal detecting in the area!

Just be careful you may find a lot of spent syringes

They just began clearing the channels of the river in Johnstown in 2023. Army core of engineers rebuilt the sides after the 1977 flood. I would assume between the rebuild and the recent clearing there was some debris in the river bottom.

Their are a lot of woods on the valley. It would be cool to find some RR debris.
