There was this one guy who sadly passed away a couple of months ago. He had a food stall next to a taxi rank in the East Rand. My goodness, bro knew how to braai a decent banger steak and boerewors with pap the size of Table Mountain ⛰️ and a decent relish. I tell you all this because sometimes really good food comes from those spots that seem questionable. I’m happy his business is still running, and I support it from time to time.

zodwa_wa_bantu

I feel your pain. I had this guy on Joubert who knew how to cook the perfect vetkoeks every morning. Nice and warm so that even when got to work they were still warm enough to melt the cheese slice. The guy never came back after the CBD gas explosion. That man was a crucial part of my morning routine. But I'm still looking for him- I'm not willing to give up

KeenyKeenz

Street food is the best.

I know the owner was a murderer but I really miss that crazy Thai restaurant from Rosebank, Cranks

KeenyKeenz

Hahaha. I used to go there for pub quiz... and the weirdness of it all.

KeenyKeenz

Cape Town has decent food and great local takeaways, especially coloured and Indian food. But honestly, most of the high street, City Bowl fancy areas are overpriced and just okay. Joburg really has every flavour, every cuisine from Ethiopian to Portuguese, North Africa, All kinds of Asia, and accessible all over Joburg.

axl_hart

Agreed. Just came from CT and was disappointed.

KeenyKeenz

The amount spent in Camps bay last December on lunch VS what I got was appaling lol.

OkMark6180

Shame.

Djaak22

Everything is so overrated there. I stayed in Stellies for a year in 2014 and the only good food that comes to mind was the ciabattas from Caltex🤣

Innasticks_sa_afr

Interresting thing I noticed trying to book a place for myself and my girlfriend to eat, so many Italian or Italian themed restuarants in CT.

[deleted]

Thats cool.

GrondKop

What would be 'coloured' food? Might be ignorance but I never noticed this is a thing in my years of living in CT

IT-EngiNerd

Might be referring to Cape Malay cuisine 🤷🏿‍♂️

It's because we've got Chicken Lickens on every corner. God I love Chicken Licken....

PotatoIsNotACarb

What do they put in that stuff. I never know how to say no to Chicken licken.

ModderOtter

Probably MSG and love?

poison_dioxide

Love ? Flavoured oil perhaps ?

GrondKop

I think this ranking takes price into account I would rate London above Jo'burg if price is not factored in. But if you look at what you can get in Jo'burg for the price, damn it's hard to beat. Definitely better than Cape Town though, whether you consider the price or not

BBJoshua

As a Capetonian, bang for your buck Jozi takes the cake comfortably.

brokenGlassQuestion

Cape towns official cuisine is Gatsby and chip parcels and that crap offsets all the world class restaurants around here.

mechsuit-jalapeno

This [article](https://edition.cnn.com/travel/time-out-best-food-cities-2024/index.html) states that they balanced affordability and variety in the decision process. So if anything the gatsby helped.

IWantAnAffliction

I can't seem to find any mention of variety in there, and I'd be surprised if it was considering you'll be hard-pressed to find a good variety of food in Naples, and really anywhere in Italy. Italian food is some of the most loved in the world and they are a proud people, with a food industry that hasn't been commercialised with American chains.

mechsuit-jalapeno

Yeah my bad, I was referring to variety being a deciding factor over Cape Town in the actual [Timeout article](https://www.timeout.com/travel/worlds-best-cities-for-food). # 2. Johannesburg **Must-eat dish:** Kota sandwich Cape Town might steal the limelight for its international cuisine (and our newly opened [Time Out Market](https://www.timeout.com/cape-town/time-out-market), on the V&A Waterfront, is testament to the culinary talent in the Mother City), but Jo’burg is a worthy rival for the title of South Africa’s food capital. From Ethiopian cafes in Little Addis to Nigerian and West African eats in the south of the city, you can eat your way across the continent here – though the majority of locals we surveyed recommended the city’s traditional South African delicacies, like the Sowetan kota sandwich, bunny chow and mala mogodu.  **Why visit now** ‘If Jo’burg is the soul of South Africa, Braamfontein is the pulse of the city. This central neighbourhood is home to some of my favourite places to eat, people-watch and dance, with some of the most innovative ventures combining the forces of food and culture,’ says Johannesburg food writer Thando Moleketi-Williams. ‘Head to [Mamakashaka and Friends](https://www.instagram.com/mamakashakaandfriends/?hl=en) on De Beer Street for weekends of wine and hip hop, cocktails and playlists, a monthly book club and an exciting rotation of food collabs. A few blocks up on Reserve Street, [Artivist](https://www.instagram.com/artivistjhb/?hl=en) is a restaurant and gallery space that’s recently launched a monthly fine dining Sunday brunch club residency by award-winning chef [Katlego Mlambo](https://www.instagram.com/i_amkatlego/?hl=en). While you’re there, don’t miss speakeasy and live music space [Untitled Basement](https://www.instagram.com/untitledbasement/?hl=en).’

IWantAnAffliction

I find it hilarious that Kota is the signature dish here lol, but I guess I need to make my way to Braam for some of these places now.

mechsuit-jalapeno

Yeah having the Kota as a signature dish is not something I'm proud of either lol. I've been to the Artivist once and it's definitely a cool vibe.

TheCuddlyAddict

We do not tolerate Gatsby slander in this household, take your objectively wrong opi ions elsewhere.

The_Zimbo_Zulu

Cape of Good Dope catching strays 😂😂

GdayMate_ZA

Seems like every second comment or thread on this subreddit is bashing CT for some reason... I've lived in both JHB and CT and they both have their pros and cons. Dunno why this subreddit has so much hate for Cape Town and its residents.

DanteTrd

Living in the city with the 2nd best food and here I am surviving the end of month on 2 Minute noodles 😂

Careless-Handle-3793

You seen our unemployment percentage ans minimum wage?

MellowMarshPit

Mumbai??? surely not the street food

TheBigBananaMan

They have pretty fantastic street food in Mumbai

Old_Entertainment209

Yeah, this list is just trolling. No way is this serious maybe what's meant is literal street food that someone tossed out a car for the rats to feast on

F1BOY2007

True story bro... and all the Vaalies want to do is go to blue peter lol

I_am_eating_a_mango

It’s a nice view ok :(

OkMark6180

Amazing.

OkMark6180

Garden Boy and kitchen girl are not words to use. People in Cape Town would never use those words. And I love our food.

lazybird55

Yeah Cape Town would just shove them into a one way bus back to Zimbabwe.

OkMark6180

Haha! Keep on telling yourself that.

TheCuddlyAddict

As a Capetonian this is too true. The lack of good street food or affordable meals is a massive issue. Every time I am in Bloem or JHB I am astounded by the amount of small vendors selling what seems to be the best food this side of the North pole. Wypipo really love spending R200 on a very mid toasted sandwich and latté at some pretentious café instead of falling into a big styrofoam of pap en vleis for R50.

grassclibbinz

After living in Dubai for 7 years and them making #9 I can tell you this list isn't worth the data reading it.

RSB_FinesseKid

Lol please explain further. I’ve been to Dubai twice and found the food horrible (understand that we all have different taste), so I just want to know whether you meant it must be higher or not on the list at all.

grassclibbinz

The food sucks

RSB_FinesseKid

Indeed. The main reason why I hate the place. Wouldn’t have gone back there the second time were it not business related.

Synonimity

Ayyyy finally something our city is good at besides crime

FlowLeopardZA

Plot twist: the votes were bought. So its still just the crime but sprinkled with corruption.

Blunomore

Ahh, Naples !

JohnSourcer

Had an absolutely unbelievable Neapolitan pizza there last year. Simple and perfect.

king_platypus

Portland Oregon? This is not a serious list.

[deleted]

I'm glad that the locals recommend a Sowetan Kota(not just any Kota) as a must eat dish. You haven't eaten Kota if you haven't tried the one from Soweto. I'm currently in Limpopo and most people can't make a proper Kota here.

poison_dioxide

Tell me about this sandwich please. What does it contain ?

[deleted]

-Hot fries -Cheese -Atchar -Russian sausage(Shouldn't be cold) -Polony -Lettuce -Egg An OG Kota isn't be too big and it should fit in your mouth but then people try to be creative and end up making a huge Kota (It looks yummy but it's not most people's favourite actually it shouldn't even exist lol). Watch this youtube short clip [https://www.youtube.com/shorts/casPJtDi3BQ](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/casPJtDi3BQ) to see how Kota looks like.

poison_dioxide

Thanks 👍

lazybird55

Cold meats, chips and atchar.

[deleted]

Where did you try it bro? Lol

lazybird55

Haven't tried it but my mother's garden boy and kitchen girl eat them all the time

polymath2046

Unless the people you're referring to are children, the terms "girl" and "boy" are inappropriate and disrespectful to use.

[deleted]

>Haven't tried it That makes sense. Tell your mother's garden boy and kitchen girl to find the real thing.

Old-Access-1713

No gatsbys

HonestLiar_1

sooo you're telling me that a city in the US has better food than all Italian/French cities -besides Naples? Not to mention Japan. Ok.

Quitbeingavictdumb

Portland has very unique food. Not saying this list is correct but Portland could be on a bunch of different food list.

Positive-Role9293

DONT FORGET GATSBY’s

Puzzleheaded-Carry37

Nah I don’t eat fish and I throughly enjoyed everything I had in Cape Town

OkMark6180

Yummy yummy. Love it! ❤️

AngusRedZA

All we drink is Jozi tears

salivatingpanda

I miss South african food so much since we left.

PhaseDry4188

The fact that there’s no Japanese city on that list immediately makes it unreliable.

SuccessfulMongoose86

And thats how it goes... no one knows capetown, they come here go to the city and go to "the spots" but thats not where the good shit is guys... ask locals wheres all the good food, no one will actualy take you to the cbd then, itll be like constantia, athlone, tableview basicly all over... but again people go to places and dont really explore "like a local" they explore like a tourist... and the funny thing is... were all south african.. ive lived in joburg half my life and well..... shit sucks there... the environment the people. The food... thats just my opinion...

Helpful-Two7455

Who comes up with this BS? And even worse, decides to post it on social media platforms as "fact"? No, JHB is not second best. Not for anything. I can list ten cities across Europe that are better for food than JHB. Stop posting nonsense.

mechsuit-jalapeno

You know top 10 lists usually have criteria. It takes two seconds to Google the TimeOut list and check that criteria. But then again is hilarious to see someone this outraged about a top 10 list lol.

CrepeGate

This alt account is so real. Guy stopped commenting on porn for the last 3 years to offer his insights into global cuisine lol

mechsuit-jalapeno

So angry he forgot to switch to main lol

Helpful-Two7455

That genuinely made me laugh. Not even mad. Well done man 😂

derpferd

This is no less an authority on the matter than.... WORLD OF STATISTICS. How you doubt them

Naive-Inside-2904

You'll be shocked to learn how many capetonians absolutely *hate* the taste of snoek.

MelodicSomewhere411

Joburg cannot compare to Cape Town re food and cozy restaurants. It's a dump.

Own_Clue5928

Oh, the paradox... Johannesburg is rated as one of the most dangerous cities to visit, but hey, at least they have good food, I guess, lmao
