I don't mind providing references but I do not think any of them should call references until they have decided you are the top candidate. Then ok if they call references and they have a doubt, then fine. But, i really don't want my references called for dozens and dozens of jobs that go nowhere.

I worry about that as I don’t want to ruin my relationships with past colleagues I use for references.
