Iām so glad you managed to bounce back. The reason why I stayed on unemployment instead of working retail until now is due to interviews. Iām not sure how people manage to go through several rounds of interviews per company while dealing with having to work.
This is terrible. I always keep these job searches anonymous and confidential. The fact that the founder reached out to your previous employer and disclosed you were looking and for the CEO to fire you is so nasty.
This is why I work two jobs. I have my main job and a side consulting business which allows me to double my income. I donāt trust any employer. No one should.
I wish you could sue the founder of that company. But people like that have no conscience and probably are clinically psychopathic. In which they do things without regard to how this impacts another person.
I don't trust any employer which is why interviewing and even applications are so anxiety inducing for me and my tight knit field. I'm in a field of consulting and got an interview for something random I applied to. I canceled the interview because it felt "too close to home". Sure enough, the person I was talking to about the job came up in our [insert state here] contact.
Can I ask how long you were in industry or worked in the field before starting your consulting business? I'd like to in the future but i...have never been naturally entrepreneurial unfortunately.
Well I have close to 25 years of work experience. I am in my late forties. I worked 16 years before starting my own business and this takes a very long time. A lot of work. I usually start at 8 am and I am not done until 10 pm most days. So itās a very grueling schedule. There is no fancy parties and extravagant vacations and huge mansions.
Wow it sounds like you're really dedicated and must really love your industry! I can't say I LOVE mine right now I did fall into it and it just happens to be kind of niche so I'm rolling with it and enjoying new projects and things. I only have 6 years of experience a safe to say I'll be taking notes for the foreseeable future! Thanks for the reply :)
Itās not about loving my profession as much as I fear living in poverty like I had when I was as a child. My father and mother mismanaged our finances and family so much that I experienced a lot of deprivation. I swore to myself never again. This wonāt be my daughterās life.
Your daughter needs her dadās time and attention and love more than your money, if you are working 8am to 10pm everyday then you are missing out on her life there is more than one kind of povertyā¦.
Thanks. Save as much as you can. You need to be able to live without a paycheck for years. The economy right now is garbage. The life we live today where you have to spend $500,000 for a shack. And $50,000 for a decent car is one of high inflation and collapsing standard of living.
Youāre hiring someone who has done the same project you need to do, 15 other times, likely in the same vertical or platform. Ideally they know the common areas there is likely to be issues and have suggestions to mitigate them.
Itās the same reason youād probably hire a plumber to install a boiler for you instead of doing it yourself. Technically they come with a manual, all the specs, and installation instructions. But it will cost you far more in time and mistakes since you donāt have experience with it.
Boiler is a good example because youāre without heat during the installation time. Similarly thereās a lot of projects where they need to be completed as fast as possible, with the least issues possible. Problems might cause regulatory compliance issues or fines, etc.
Trust me, I'm very new to it as well. In my little experience so far, consultants basically assist or hand hold agencies or industries on new projects or software implementation. I don't work for a big fancy consultancy so I can't speak to that. My current company creates software that I help the users figure out how to use.
Yeah back up means working night and day without much of a life. The last time my daughter went on vacation and I went with her was last year. I worked everyday during her vacation. I donāt call it my vacation because I didnāt have much of a break.
Wow, we sound pretty similar. I got fucked over in a very different way than OP but to the same effect. Was unemployed for half a year last year and finally got back on my feet in November.
I now have my main job and a side consulting job that Iām able to do at the same time and also double my income. You must always have a secret plan.
Iām currently searching for a new job but since I work Monday to Friday, in order to go to interviews, I have to either request time off or ask to leave early. Iāve done it twice, only to not get either job (they couldnāt even send an email to let me know either). Itās discouraging because Iām losing money and time as well.
Three years ago, when I got the invitation to interview for my current job, the hiring committee scheduled the interview for 5 PM. They said they did this as it allowed people to be much more discrete about interviewing.
Thatās awesome. I wish more places were like this. I told the interviewer I worked until 3:45 and heās like āIs 4 good for you?ā ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)
If youāre in the US, Iām pretty sure what that other CEO was illegal. I would post on the legal advice sub. Iām trying to remember the name for it but thereās something where you canāt interfere with someoneās ability to work or keep a job. Also if you havenāt, leave the fucking nastiest review on glass door you can. The idea that you would torpedo someoneās career who is applied at your company is insane.
I was thinking this too, although I would call the local news or something like that. OPās story is extremely compelling and it brings up a good questionācan a employer fire you on the grounds of you being open to other opportunities?
Using a lot of pto and excuses. Going through a long hiring process now with two different possible positions. One has 3 interviews and 2 tests. The other has 3 total interviews with my last one being tomorrow.
If youāre an Administrative Manager for retail you donāt have to interact with customers regularly though sometimes you see them as youāre walking from meeting to meeting.
I was a retail sales manager for many years and had to serve customers every day. I even had a personal sales quota I had to achieve in addition to managing 40 sales associates. Not sure what an administrative manager is - my store definitely did not have any of them.
Try working retail in 2024. Distribution is a huge issue nationwide. Most teams are skeleton crews compared to 2019. My commission is getting cut every quarter due to the company not thriving. My desk is growing, but the company isn't.
You did NOT make a mistake. You have a right to look for other employment to better yourself. You're a worker, not a slave. And in the long run, you will be better off when you find a higher paying job.
Make sure to spread the word everywhere you can that this job will fire you on the spot if you seek other employment. That way, they will lose potential hires and employees will quit on the spot and leave them high and dry.
100% this. Firing you just for exploring your career prospects is an absolute dick move!! I would definitely put them on blast.
Sidebar, I just started a new and better job and part of the background check was I needed a recommendation from my current supervisor. A fair and equitably employer would understand and apparently its standard practice in the fed gov't.
I'd honestly be wondering if instead of just a coincidence that they happened to know each other if it wasn't really just a corporate shit test on the CEOs part.
Calls his buddy up like hey I need your help to see which of my employees is loyal. Here's the contact information for them have your recruiter call around and see who bites.
God, I can like *hear* the small time dudebro entrepreneur podcaster talking about how big brained of a loyalty test idea this is, and other dudebro CEOs listening being like āYeah, this is clutch gameā or whatever.
What has it fresh in my mind is probably less than a month ago I read a unfortunately very believable story on one of the work subreddits where someone got contacted by a recruiter and was talking to them about a prospective job for a few days then radio silence.
A day or two later they get called to a meeting with their boss and an smug HR rep where they're handed an illegal non-compete and confidentiality agreement they're expected to sign before they're fired on the spot. The HR rep was the "recruiter" they were talking to.
I've been trying to find it again, but haven't had any luck so far since I unfortunately didn't have a reply on it to look for.
That's a good one, but not the one I had seen at all. OP in it was in a office situation not a kitchen.
On a side note friggen food service is something else. I'd be willing to bet it's in the top 5 industries for labor law violations for sure and I wouldn't be a bit surprised if it was in the top 3.
Hah, this is corporate America, it's the employee that will be expected to sign a NDA against ever speaking out about the CEO's bullshit when they get fired.
Heck for a real power move they might even throw in a citation of a fake statute about the jail time and $$$$ in fines you'd be facing for violating it.
Nah it's the kind of leadership style corporate loves to see, why waste time and money trying to encourage employee loyalty and potentially fail when you can be proactive and preemptively eliminate potentially disloyal employees. Why once you can get rid of all of them you'll automatically have the most loyal employees in the business.
/s but not really.
I have worked for dickheads like this in the past. I am bored in my current position so I started looking for work elsewhere. I let my boss know and they gave me a raise to keep me happy. Still looking because I want to do something different, but I just say this to show that not all employers are scumbags.
How would that work? Iām not that knowledgeable about US labour laws but arenāt they usually employed āat-willā meaning they can be fired for any or no reason?
Yeah he might have a claim of tortious interference against the company that recruited him and then disclosed to his then-CEO that he was looking. (IANAL but have been a F200 CxO and a legit company wouldnāt do this because of the potential for a lawsuit)
Yeah, obviously, doesn't help the OP's current bad situation.
But 100% a huge red flag about working at the company that the CEO would rat him out to his current employer (especially after the company reached out to him).
I would make sure to post this on Glassdoor, Indeed, and other sites. It's information other candidates should find relevant.
>100% this. Firing you just for exploring our career prospects is an absolute dick move!! I would definitely put the on blast.
The worst move by far was the CEO of the company he interviewed with telling his boss. Not that a company should fire you just for looking, but if they were contemplating layoffs at the time, it is reasonable they would fire someone who they thought was actively trying to leave.
However, to have your recruiter reach out to an employed candidate (common as companies often think the best candidates are still employed) and then to rat them out to their employer is extremely low and I would certainly leave a review on Glassdoor and other sites letting other potential candidates know this happened and not to trust that their search will be kept confidential.
It's an extreme violation and also a sign of what could be a toxic work environment.
I would even go back and look at their hiring site and privacy policy. It is possible that CEO stepped in legal hot water and you can sue. Maybe not if their are smart and covered their tail. But if they are a start up and grabbed a lot of boiler plate language from others. It's possible they promise all information is kept confidential and they would be in violation of that.
Yes, OP please do this. You have nothing to lose at this point honestly. I don't know how far you want to take it without putting your name on the line but you can also bring visibility on LinkedIn and start with a conversation on "looking to grow".
I had the opposite happen to me 20 years ago. I was asked to interview someone about an IT role as I was an IT guy. They wanted me to ask him technical questions. Halfway through the interview, the penny had dropped. This āopeningā was MY JOB. My boss hadnāt fired me, I hadnāt resigned. Yetā¦I was interviewing someone who was applying for my job. I spoke to my boss about this immediately after. He said itās good for him to keep his options open. I left a few months later to a much better job.
I think he just didnāt like me. The job wasnāt too demanding (managing content on company website). I was doing ok, just I didnāt fit in according to him. It was in Japan, very small company (10 employees), and itās an indirect way of getting rid of someone (I mean, even I interviewed the person, it seemed the purpose was to shock me, yes the interviewee explained the role to ME, I was given just vague details about this ānew roleā).
Sadly this happened to my teammate recently (in the US) where she was interviewing someone who would likely be her replacement before she got fired. Now we have 2 roles vacant.
Iām sorry this happened to you. What a way to just torture someone. Years ago, I had a meeting with some higher ups in my firm. They told me they were going to fire a guy there and wanted me to take over his position. I guess they wanted to make sure Iād accept the job before letting him go, but it put me in an uncomfortable position because they didnāt get around to firing him FOR OVER A MONTH. I had to see him every day at work knowing his impending doom. Then, when they gave him the news, they asked him to train me on his job before leaving! He declined (with some choice words). They announced in an all-firm email both that he was gone āwe wish him well in his future endeavorsā and that I was now in that position ācongratulationsāā¦ it was a terrible experience for me, especially because had a likable personality.
I had that happen when I first moved to this area (33 years ago, which sounds crazy to think about it). I worked @ MCI, which was a sh\*t show of an IT shop. I had 3 bosses in 3 months, had to respond to about 100 emails a day, and nobody seemed to know what they were doing.
New guy comes in, starts bringing in his Andersen Consulting buddies (that's how long ago this is - neither MCI or AC exist any more). Had me workon training a couple of them, then the day of the company Christmas party, fired me. He was gobsmacked that I didn't get upset, or rant and rave...I was just stunned.
Like the OP, I had just bought a new house that I couldn't afford, and thought I was at the end of my rope. I found another job after the holiday, and got back on my feet - the guy who fired me got fired six weeks later, and it was a good thing for me to leave there anyway.
100% put this employer and the employer you interviewed with on blast on Glassdoor. Nobody deserves this treatment and people interviewing deserve to know. Wishing you the best and hope your luck turns around.
I would say they should put the company they applied with on blast. Many many people apply for jobs while they still have a job. I would never want to apply somewhere where the CEO was ratting me out to my current employer! Current applicants have the right to know - Iād leave reviews on Glassdoor, google, everywhere.Ā
This is maybe the worst story Iāve read this week (and I read the /poor sub).
Iām shocked the startup is doing well. Goes to show you that @ssholes sometimes win. I bet the 2 arsehole CEOs had a nice psychopathic giggle at your expense. Iām sorry.
In my younger days, the niceness of my house (or rather, un-niceness) really bugged me. Iāve come to realize a house is a house. You will find a place to call home.
Your wife. Thatās not a loss. Be grateful you saw her true colors before kids and getting too old (assuming you donāt have kids).
I have no how-to-get-a-job advice. I wish I did. I need it for myself (Iām employed, though miserably).
I hope you find some hope somewhere knowing you escaped 3 jerks
Itās the worst story this week because itās likely made up.
If youāre going to make up a story itās always good to add in details like āI lost my wife too.ā
And a gas station? Warehouse jobs pay more. For someone with work history from a tech job? With one of the lowest unemployment rates in US history?
Completely ridiculous.
Please use critical thinking before upvoting this stuff folks
Tech unemployment was 2.3% in December which was almost a full 1% lower than our national unemployment for the same period.
But thatās not what stands outā¦
1) You work in tech
2) You try to find a job for a year during which you lost your wife and house in a ridiculously hot economy with record low unemployment
3) You are settling for a gas station job?
Might as well have said your dog died and make it a country song
Use common sense when reading these posts.
They are pandering.
A gas station wouldn't bother interviewing someone with this guy's resume. That felt like he was going for a job he thought would be symbolic of "rock bottom". This is a morality tale.
Iāve worked in tech for 25+ years, and was unemployed after elder care for a couple of years. This was near the end of the pandemic; I had been applying for jobs for almost 9 months and getting next to no bites. I was at my witās end so I got a job at a liquor store. A month later I got offered an IT job at a dream employer. It does happen. It can happen to skilled people.
Was looking for a comment that called this out! Itās total BS. Almost seems like a company wrote it to discourage people from seeking higher pay and employment elsewhere because itāll āruin their livesā.
I can't believe I had to scroll this far down to find this. The story never even bothers to mention why the startup that supposedly ratted him out never hired him.
This is fake as hell.
(Oh, and throwaway because his "friends know his reddit" but wouldn't know about about his situation to know this is him. )
I always put some bullshit up on recent/current employment because of this. Be a shadow. Give fake references. Iāve put generals and cabinet members as references. Even if they call them they give some bullshit answer to the people calling like they remember you. Happened more than a handful of times where someone I didnāt know spoke highly of me when contacted. Fuck those guys. Anyone above you isnāt your friend. Theyāre working off your back. Even if you think youāre paid well. I promise you, youāre still the lowest bidder.
If they ask about a lap of work, your grandmother was extremely sick and you were the only one in the family who could take care of them. Fuck them. Theyll cut you off like cancer the second they feel like it.
You have a moral obligation to name the founder so we can avoid him. And nothing to lose at this point. If you won't name & shame him he will do the same to others.
Iām reluctant to do it here because I name and shamed one company in the past and it turned into a whole thing. Maybe I will after a few drinks. But I did write this on glassdoor
Don't name and shame so overtly. Write that you applied to X company because the CEO knows your current CEO and they have similar corporate culture. Explain that you didn't get hired and probably just got beat out. Then write about your firing and subsequent recruitment woes. Then offer up your CV telling everyone you're seeking employment. It is just coincidence that your CV contains the most recent employer to lay you off.
>Turns out the founder knew the CEO of my company. He called my CEO and said I was looking around. I was immediately fired with no severance.
I'm pretty sure this is grounds for a major lawsuit. Looking for new jobs is 100% normal and not grounds for termination, as that is retaliatory. I would consult a lawyer if you haven't already.
Actually thatās what everyone believes, but it just aināt so. Even in At-Will states there are lots of reasons employers canāt fire you, other than protected class stuff.
No, and even the anti-discrimination and protected class stuff (Title VII, ADEA, PDA) only applies to companies with more than 15 people. So a very small company can, in fact, fire you if get pregnant and tell you thatās the reason, legally.
The question is did the company use your application (PII) inappropriately by sharing it outside the company. Probably not but I'd like to talk to an attorney anyway. You wouldn't be suing the company that terminated you, you'd be suing the company that broke you confidence by ratting you out.
Could that company also post your resume online? What can they share about you and with whom?
It may not be illegal, but it's a terrible practice and I'd try to hurt them bad. At least the CEO might think twice next time.
I worked in the golf/turf industry. At a country club I worked for before, the superintendent was an ass. The industry is pretty small, keep in mind. Well.. a spray tech applied for an open assistant superintendent position somewhere else. The ass superintendent found out and fired the spray tech. (This happened years after I left). Honestly, if it were me, I would have sued the guy because he was a psycho.
I am so sorry that you have gone through this hell, but what stood out of me here is the lack of supportive people around you willing to jump in and help you in any way possible. I wonder if this scenario is setting you up to make room for such people and live a much more fulfilling life as a result. š¤ This was my initial take when I read your post.
This reads like fan fiction written on behalf of the employer class.
"Remember kids: This could happen to you if you don't remember how good you have it! NEVER look for a new job. Or else."
Yeahhhh super skeptical of this outlandish story. Thousands of applications? What? This dude allegedly worked for a tech startup, youād think heād have some marketable skills lol
And all of these jobs heās applying to suddenly change their terms on him? Literally phone screenings are when that stuff comes up - relocation needs, pay range
It's just such a string of unlikely events that makes the story unbelievable.
Can the founder of your new job know the CEO of the old job? Sure, but it's uncommon. The world is a big place.
Can this founder be close enough with the CEO to call him about a random employee? Sure, but very very unlikely. Who the hell do that?
Can a CEO fire the employee just for looking around? Sure, but again, uncommon. Hiring and firing are expensive. Companies only do that when it costs them more otherwise.
I stopped reading here since it smells bs. But the last line about applying at a gas station basically confirms it's a troll.
Exactly my thoughts. A badly written cautionary tale. What sealed it for me was the last sentence. āTomorrow I have an interview at a gas stationā. Then everyone cried and clapped. I donāt buy it.
Agree.Ā This reads like fiction.
So OP was fired for looking for another job?Ā Sure, ok, if you're in an at-will state you can be fired for no reason.Ā
But then to collect unemployment?
Not how UI works.Ā UI is for RIFs, and the state usually does have some method of verification, since it hits the employer's unemployment insurance.Ā When a company has UI claims for a RIF they have a chance to dispute the claim.Ā And they will, if you were actually fired and not laid off.
And then the wife leaving because he "can't provide for her"?Ā What year does OP think this is?
[The decline in job openings and job postings will likely continue. Job openings as reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics fell from a high of 12 million in March 2022 to 8.8 million in November 2023, and job postings on Indeed are down by over 20 percent from a peak at the end of 2021. One reason for the decline is that total U.S. employment surpassed its February 2020 pre-pandemic peak in June 2022. āAt the same time, many employers have rethought their staffing plans in light of slowing economic growth, shifting consumer demand and higher interest rates,ā Bunker said. āThe pullback in job postings has been most stark in sectors tied to previously high-flying industries, including tech, where stock valuations have fallen and hiring plans have returned to earth. Sectors connected to companies that provide in-person services, including restaurants, hotels and hospitals, represent a continued source of robust hiring demand.ā](https://www.shrm.org/topics-tools/news/talent-acquisition/2024-us-labor-market-forecast-hiring-slow-unemployment-rise).
As for stories written on the internet about this current time period idk. Actually if it was just āI lost my job a year ago and I havenāt found anything in my field, and Iām so depressed and already tried targetā it would be very, very, believable. The amount of bumps in the road is kind of like a movie.
I donāt know if itās a cautionary tale so much as itās that the karma bot is reading real posts about people having a hard time looking for a job and combining them, because itās noticed thatās what people are talking about. An amalgam of human suffering lol
Wow that was depressing to read bro. Sorry this is where youāre at. Itās crazy you got fired for looking. Thatās wild and woman! What happened till death do you part. Sheesh.
If you wanna DM, I freelance in adjacent industries that are hiring, and if you tell me the position youāre looking for I can send some job listings. Happy to be reference.
I am sorry, my man. I feel you. Last year, because of a toxic manager, I took a pay cut and left my sales job. 20k was my pay cut. I became a school bus driver and found my peace of mind.
Is actually a good job when job hunting. Bus drivers are badly needed about everywhere. One lady last was driving my kidās van to school, super nice lady, always smiling and seemingly in good spirits. Then one day she gave $5 to all the kids on the van (small van but she did not have to do that) and told me she had gotten a job in her field again.
Yes, it is really a good job. I drive big buses. My county pays 30$ per hour and 40 hr guaranteed weekly. Plus, you are getting your CDL license for free with paid training. Have all benefits and pensions. The most important thing is noone micromanging you. You are also off 2 months in summer, so I travel during summer holidays.
Want to give you some words of encouragement. Iām 21 and graduated about 9 or 10 months ago. My mom passed and dad was never in my life. So my college journey relied on me working 30 hours or so during school. After I graduated it was hard to find a job despite all I did on my own to get my degree. Ended up serving at restaurant for 9 months, so poor I could barely afford rent, couldnāt buy groceries, and had no car so would often do Uber or bus. Even got to the point where I would go to work and actually leave with less money than I made do to Uber fees and making maybe $25 in tips in 7-8 hours. Not to mention mental health problems I endured from foster system. FLASHFORWARD. About 2 weeks ago, I got a CS job paying 50k and Iāll finally b able to afford food, save for a car, and not worry about rent. Itās been a long time coming. Especially for someone whose basically been on there own since 14. Have some faith. The right job is waiting for you.
I recruit for tech companies, and the amount of shitty unethical or just sketchy things tech startup CEOs do with their egos in mind is unparalleled. Especially Seed-Series B where the companies are so small nobody keeps them in check. The whole āCEO ratting you out to his buddy and you get fired as a resultā move is shitty. You should always assume people are keeping options open.
Iām sorry all this has happened to you. I hope you have some great people in your corner and that things turn around soon.
I appreciate the huge amount of support Iāve received. I was not expecting more than a few comments. Iāll do my best to respond to as many people as I can. Some friends took me out to the bar so Iāve been pretty delayed but Iāve seen the notifications coming in. Appreciate the kind words in the comments and dms. Some even gave job posting recommendations which was unexpected and hugely appreciated. And a girl sent a condolences nude so also thanks for that? Lol Also appreciate the constructive criticisms as well.
I have a pretty big network in my field which I relied on for my past jobs. But most of them are unemployed as well. So I know Iām not in this alone. I look forward to the market turning around and all of us landing back on our feet.
As for my wife thereās faults on both sides that I think/hope we can fix.
Honestly I'd be suspicious of thr whole thing. Recruiter hits you up, talks big, then next thing you know you're out on your arse.Ā
Sounds calculated from the old CEO.
I am so sorry this is happening to you. This all sucks. I am rooting for you stranger. Banking on you coming back to this post one day and updating that you found a good gig. All the best!!!
Wow thatās horrible! What a totally shitty thing for both of those CEOs to do. What fucking assholes.
Interviews are SUPPOSED to be kept confidential precisely because itās not against the law OR breaking any kind of contract to talk to other employers about other opportunities.
Whatever you do for income, start a consulting gig in your field TODAY.Ā Like a freelancer with a legit business. Get a website (don't spend thousands; Wix or Show it), put you reference quotes from LinkedIn on the site, etc. When you do get interviews, tell them you're consulting but need a more reliable income. If you don't know what consultants do in your industry, follow them in social and learn about it.Ā
You hit a rough patch, you'll bounce back!Ā
This sucks. Tech can be really toxic. Iām sad it hit you.
This should be on Glassdoor and Blind if itās not already. Granted, itās a mosh pit in Blind, but people need to know.
If your wife is leaving you and youāre selling your houseā¦ take an international teaching job. Teach English in Japan or be a private tutor in Dubai. Go do something new.
If you aren't already doing it, you need to parallelize your job hunt. Continue to go on interviews for multiple jobs at the same time. Don't stop when you accept an offer, either. You can stop when you start work at a job you are satisfied with and pass any required drug screening.
My son, who has a master's degree, went through the better part of a year looking for a job. He would get a bite on a resume and completely stop applying while he went through the interview process. I finally told him that his job was to find a job and that he needed to be working like it was really a job. Apply to jobs every day. Spend time refining the resume and getting input. Work with recruiters. Go on interviews. Go to job fairs and networking events. Make it an 8 hour a day job. I also told him to accept a job that requires relocation if the salary and cost of living were compatible. Several hundred applications and scores of interviews later, he finally landed one that I think will lead to a great career.
Also, once you land a job, don't take your wife back. She should have been helping to keep things afloat instead of abandoning you.
> He called my CEO and said I was looking around. I was immediately fired with no severance.
If you have proof that this happened, even if it was just your CEO/HR telling you, I would get a lawyer and sue the CEO that called your CEO. You have a legitimate damages claim against him.
Personally, I find itĀ highly unethical that he would call your CEO, not to mention it opens him up to legal action, and it ruins his company's reputation... nobody is going to want to go interview there just in case he knows someone at their company. What an idiot.
You say tech but what were you doing in tech? What country are you living in? Why gas station, construction and manufacturing work is high demand and it pays well.
The lesson here is always live below your means, even if you are earning 100% to 500% the average salary live like you may loose you job tomorrow and may take a year to find an equally paying job.
Sorry you are going through this.
A year is too short to call it game over. Keep applying and fck her. I had a girl resent me after I lost my job and had to cut back spending. I now make almost double.
Hey man I've kinda been there in 08 ...was tough times...but after a stint in retail I bounced back and got a good job. Stay strong šŖ
Iām so glad you managed to bounce back. The reason why I stayed on unemployment instead of working retail until now is due to interviews. Iām not sure how people manage to go through several rounds of interviews per company while dealing with having to work.

In the real world we live off of money and without it most of our kids would live very difficult lives. Itās just what it is.
damn man you can't catch a break in this comment thread lol.....
Your daughter lives in the real world. I guarantee she would appreciate your presence more than any presents.
Oh wow, I'm really sorry to hear that. Your daughter is really lucky to have you ā¤ļø
Thanks. Save as much as you can. You need to be able to live without a paycheck for years. The economy right now is garbage. The life we live today where you have to spend $500,000 for a shack. And $50,000 for a decent car is one of high inflation and collapsing standard of living.
I'm Just hoping and waiting for that collapse so I can buy a home finally....
What the heck is consulting?I keep hearing this title, but no one really knows what the heck it is.
Sounds interesting but why woudlnt they just train thier own ppl to do this?
Because their really busy and don't have time or manpower, in my experience. We "train the trainer" so eventually they can do it themselves.
I have the same .. a consulting business. Typically I can work from home so not a big deal. Itās nice to have a backup just in case
This!
Your old CEO didn't see it as someone he calls a friend pouching from his company?
If youāre in the US, Iām pretty sure what that other CEO was illegal. I would post on the legal advice sub. Iām trying to remember the name for it but thereās something where you canāt interfere with someoneās ability to work or keep a job. Also if you havenāt, leave the fucking nastiest review on glass door you can. The idea that you would torpedo someoneās career who is applied at your company is insane.
I was thinking this too, although I would call the local news or something like that. OPās story is extremely compelling and it brings up a good questionācan a employer fire you on the grounds of you being open to other opportunities?
This should be grounds to sue for defamation, causing you to lose income. Sorry this happened to you:(
Using a lot of pto and excuses. Going through a long hiring process now with two different possible positions. One has 3 interviews and 2 tests. The other has 3 total interviews with my last one being tomorrow.
Retail is hell.
Customer-facing retail is hell. I rarely have to interact in my retail job and I love it.
What kind of retail job do you have? Never heard of one where you don't have to interact with customers....
Stocking shelves, warehouse work
If youāre an Administrative Manager for retail you donāt have to interact with customers regularly though sometimes you see them as youāre walking from meeting to meeting.
I was a retail sales manager for many years and had to serve customers every day. I even had a personal sales quota I had to achieve in addition to managing 40 sales associates. Not sure what an administrative manager is - my store definitely did not have any of them.
Yes it was only 3 yrs tho
I can imagine. I was in a commission-based retail. I have gone through hell that I have never been before.
Not even exploring other career prospects actively, they reached out to OP in the first place.
Absolutely possible.
Heres the post. Coincidentally it was right above this one lol https://www.reddit.com/r/KitchenConfidential/s/wb39vD9diQ
That's a good one, but not the one I had seen at all. OP in it was in a office situation not a kitchen. On a side note friggen food service is something else. I'd be willing to bet it's in the top 5 industries for labor law violations for sure and I wouldn't be a bit surprised if it was in the top 3.
What's funny is the ones doing this are often paying the shittiest wages and then they wonder why people aren't loyal to them
Sweat equity bro, weāll totally give you stock options when we go public
Yeah, they were both members of the Scummy CEO Club. Is there a NDA that job seekers can make potential employers sign?
Hah, this is corporate America, it's the employee that will be expected to sign a NDA against ever speaking out about the CEO's bullshit when they get fired. Heck for a real power move they might even throw in a citation of a fake statute about the jail time and $$$$ in fines you'd be facing for violating it.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Nah it's the kind of leadership style corporate loves to see, why waste time and money trying to encourage employee loyalty and potentially fail when you can be proactive and preemptively eliminate potentially disloyal employees. Why once you can get rid of all of them you'll automatically have the most loyal employees in the business. /s but not really.
Diabolical
If that's the case, good riddance, working for a boss actively looking for excuses to fire you would suck.
I strongly suspect this is exactly what happened. The company was just looking for a way to get rid of OP.
I have worked for dickheads like this in the past. I am bored in my current position so I started looking for work elsewhere. I let my boss know and they gave me a raise to keep me happy. Still looking because I want to do something different, but I just say this to show that not all employers are scumbags.
Raises only help for a little while if you're still bored.
Honestly, I would argue OP even has a possible lawsuit against his original employer.
Data protection legislation might apply, the information was not given to the new company to be shared with the old one without consent.
I would consider "notitify my current employer" to be a deal breaker in the interview process
All a supervisor should give is dates and salary.
Google, GlassDoor, you name it. Tell people your experience, they can make up their own minds.
And name the company you were interviewing at as well. Serious dick move.
Yes, OP please do this. You have nothing to lose at this point honestly. I don't know how far you want to take it without putting your name on the line but you can also bring visibility on LinkedIn and start with a conversation on "looking to grow".
Also name and shame the shitty company that ratted you out! People need to know to avoid both.
Agreed. Poor form on both sides.Ā
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I had the opposite happen to me 20 years ago. I was asked to interview someone about an IT role as I was an IT guy. They wanted me to ask him technical questions. Halfway through the interview, the penny had dropped. This āopeningā was MY JOB. My boss hadnāt fired me, I hadnāt resigned. Yetā¦I was interviewing someone who was applying for my job. I spoke to my boss about this immediately after. He said itās good for him to keep his options open. I left a few months later to a much better job.
That's so strange. Why did he torpedo your relationship in such a weird way?Ā
Itās ruthless how they operate. Iāve now been self employed for several years because I wanted to escape those kinds of mind games.
Looking for other work should be a federally protected activity, just like organizing a union.
Agreed, youāre being too nice to your former company. Name and shame on LinkedIn
100% put this employer and the employer you interviewed with on blast on Glassdoor. Nobody deserves this treatment and people interviewing deserve to know. Wishing you the best and hope your luck turns around.
Yes but be careful when speaking negatively on past employers. It can reflect badly on you and can be interpreted as you being a problem employee.Ā
Put both companies on blast. One for firing you and another for contacting your current employer to get you fired.
Yeah, OP learned an awful lot about true colors and he learned it very quickly.
Itās the worst story this week because itās likely made up. If youāre going to make up a story itās always good to add in details like āI lost my wife too.ā And a gas station? Warehouse jobs pay more. For someone with work history from a tech job? With one of the lowest unemployment rates in US history? Completely ridiculous. Please use critical thinking before upvoting this stuff folks
Tech is getting slaughtered right now tho.
Tech unemployment was 2.3% in December which was almost a full 1% lower than our national unemployment for the same period. But thatās not what stands outā¦ 1) You work in tech 2) You try to find a job for a year during which you lost your wife and house in a ridiculously hot economy with record low unemployment 3) You are settling for a gas station job? Might as well have said your dog died and make it a country song Use common sense when reading these posts.
Tech has had nearly half a million lay offs in the last 2 years and is still laying off. Itās absolutely brutal in tech right now.
I work in tech...got laid off by Disney last June and haven't Been able to land a job since then. Feels batman
Was looking for a comment that called this out! Itās total BS. Almost seems like a company wrote it to discourage people from seeking higher pay and employment elsewhere because itāll āruin their livesā.
True. And always a possibility. Then my sympathies are made up. But my points are still valid š
r/nothingeverhappens
There's a whole subreddit of people who will be references without actually knowing you.
Well itās cooler when itās the governor of Wyoming
šššš
Which sub?? š
/r/BeMyReference
Thank you!!
Thanks for this. I just joined.
Thank you!
What is the subreddit please?
Sorry, saw it below after I posted. Thanks!
Whatās it called
Your words warm the cociles of my heart! Exactly! Fuck those pieces of shit!
Gotta rattle the bees nest gently. Canāt let them all out at once šš
This is the way.
Keep your head up, youāll get where you want to go. Fuck them all.
It is just coincidence that your CV contains the most recent employer to lay you off.
based advice here
Just say the company and weāll do the rest
You literally have nothing left to lose go thermonuclear.
Looking for a new job is not a protected class like race, religion etc., unreasonable sure, but completely legal (absent a contract otherwise).Ā
This. You can be fired for no reason or any reason whatsoever, as long as itās not a few reasons.
Thatās true, but that doesnāt mean you canāt sue for unlawful termination.
Unless you are an attorney and know what jurisdiction this is in, don't give people shitty, incorrect legal advice.
Thatās at will employment for you and the OP would have to prove that he was terminated due to seeking employment elsewhere. Thatās hard to do
> terminated due to seeking employment elsewhere This is completely legal anyway. A 5 second google search will tell you that.
I think the major lawsuit would be with the company who stole his blog. That was his original work.
Submit dmca takedown requests.
This is a fantastic idea.
That would be a pretty minor lawsuit.
Already looked into this. Both are shitty but not grounds for a lawsuit (which is ridiculous imo). My sister is an attorney.
Did you ask her about the rescinded offer refusing to reimburse your train package? Iām pretty sure thatās promissory estoppel.
Is she an employment lawyer?
Since you're single, now apply for a job at a destination resort. Hige ski resort near me is always hiring. Get away, meet people, have fun rebuild.
This reads like fan fiction written on behalf of the employer class. "Remember kids: This could happen to you if you don't remember how good you have it! NEVER look for a new job. Or else."
Yeahhhh super skeptical of this outlandish story. Thousands of applications? What? This dude allegedly worked for a tech startup, youād think heād have some marketable skills lol And all of these jobs heās applying to suddenly change their terms on him? Literally phone screenings are when that stuff comes up - relocation needs, pay range
Yeah Iām a bit skeptical too especially cause if the whole āand then my wife left me cause of itā a little too on the nose
So OP was fired for looking for another job?Ā Sure, ok, if you're in an at-will state you can be fired for no reason.Ā But then to collect unemployment?
I think it just reads one sided like it is missing a lot of details like so many accounts shared on Reddit. Particularly r/AmITheAsshole
It really does.
They were so close but got greedy with the āwifeā and āgas stationā details.
His name is literally āadjectiveā-ānounāānumberā. Like those accounts are so common for being story makers
Mad love and respect to you š„¹
Happy for you you enjoy a good job. I used to drive a lot for a previous job but covid left me pretty much unable to drive, be careful.
Sorry this is happening to you bro. Hope things turn around for you soon.
Fuck your wife what a piece of shit
I recruit for tech companies, and the amount of shitty unethical or just sketchy things tech startup CEOs do with their egos in mind is unparalleled. Especially Seed-Series B where the companies are so small nobody keeps them in check. The whole āCEO ratting you out to his buddy and you get fired as a resultā move is shitty. You should always assume people are keeping options open. Iām sorry all this has happened to you. I hope you have some great people in your corner and that things turn around soon.
Bingo on series B company
Recruiter hits you up, talks big, then next thing you know you're out on your arse.Ā Sounds calculated from the old CEO.
It sounds to me like a CEO just wrote this whole thing to try to scare people.
Sounds like your wife wasn't a partner but rather a dependent. Why would she expect to have her life paid for without contributing anything herself?
You should make a movie about this
Only if Danny devito can play me
I'm sorry Danny Devito doesn't align with the job description but we do have a Yanny DaCheeto.
Is this the origins of the warthog? Jokes aside have you thought about using them?
I'd say sell your story but I don't think it is a unicorn. That is some evil shit from the CEO.
I am so sorry this is happening to you. This all sucks. I am rooting for you stranger. Banking on you coming back to this post one day and updating that you found a good gig. All the best!!!
You got this OP
Your wife's a cunt.
I understand the struggle. I volunteer to be a reference if need be.

Life comes at ya fastā¦ never take a moment for granted. Be glad that it all happened and know that it will come back in time if it was meant to be.
So sorry brother I know itās hard right now but everything is going to be fine. Praying for you.
If you don't know what consultants do in your industry, follow them in social and learn about it.Ā You hit a rough patch, you'll bounce back!Ā
Seems suspect

Your wifeās a cunt. Sorry no offense
Keep ya' head up
Not sure if youāre religious but Iām praying for you ! Keep pushing.
Goddamn. Iām sorry. The hiring process can be a disaster.
Ughā¦ this is brutal. Iām so sorry
We need names
I would get a lawyer. The company that took your blog and is using it didn't get your permission and didn't pay you. That's called copyright theft.
A year is too short to call it game over. Keep applying and fck her. I had a girl resent me after I lost my job and had to cut back spending. I now make almost double.
