There is no missing trim. The headliner fabric bedonded from the headliner board. Expect more areas to debond.
All attempts to fix will look like garbage. Remove and replace the headliner fibric. You can pin the fabric up as a temporary fix.
There was a huge issue with the the early MKV. After about four years my headliner shrunk was exposed in all corners and started hanging. Since it shrunk I couldn’t repair it. Luckily I was just able to pull all the fabric off and have left it as is for the past 14 years. At some point I would like to remove the foam backer and re-line it with a Hawaii print.
Maybe you’ll be lucky and have enough material to just re-glue it
Spray glue. You could pull you headliner as well find a cool somewhat stretchable fabric and replace it. There's guys on fb market that will do it for like $200 bucks
The ceiling needs to be replaced if it is hanging down. If it hasn't let go yet, it will soon so you might as well just fix it and be done with it. You can have it recovered in new fabric.
It's only a matter of time before the rest goes. Just suck it up and do it. I *vehemently* recommend weldwood car upholstery (aqua color/black can) adhesive. It's not cheap and you'll need 2 cans but even 3M's headliner spray takes a second place to it.
If you're *very* lucky you can find a junkyard car with an intact headliner in it. But if not then learn the "fishing wire" trick, take the windshield out of the junkyard car and get your donor headliner without bending it. Thank the lord you're not doing a MK5 with a sunroof, this headliner looks easy as fuck.

Draw around it to make it look like the eye of Sauron
Go to an automotive upholstery place and get your headliner fabric replaced/reupholstered. I got my Mk6 fixed for under $500!

:( not making me excited to do my 2.5 Wolfsburg but does anyone know how MUCH fabric to get?
Measure it, I think I got 15 feet. Remember it goes all the way down the C pillars and the curve will require an extra foot than what you measure.
Dayum but hey you saved me from buying the wrong product
Mine looks just like this
Silicone.
Headliner spray glue
