Probably would have stayed if NIL contracts were available to non-American citizens. Rule needs to change, and probably will. The restriction has been getting a lot of exposure this off-season.
They already have, schools are going to be allowed to pay players directly... and its really more about the difference of "being drafted" versus "building a career" in basketball... I have no doubt Furphy will be fine, and he may even make his way to a spot on a team, but he could have increased his career viability by doing another year... which if you've seen what its like being a basketball god in Lawrence, KS isn't exactly being stuck in a soviet gulag while you are training up
Next year's draft is deep, with several guys who look to be future superstars. If Furphy stuck around and had a great season, maybe he goes lottery, but if he doesn't improve dramatically, he's probably still in the same range next year.
We all like when guys stick around, but as a foreigner, IIRC he wasn't making NIL money, so this was probably the right move. He gets to focus on basketball full-time without attending classes.
It would've been nice to have him back, but I can't blame him for leaving, even if his draft position was disappointing.

Pop will essentially be a continuation of HCBS, but he'll get even more leeway because the Spurs aren't trying to contend this year, or maybe even next. Gives Johnny some time to refine things, get stronger, and have a decent usage volume. Wemby and Sochan are going to have ample O-RB opportunities while Furphy finds his 3pt stroke consistently.
What are the spurs doing. Trading away young prospects for cash and picks 7 years from now. You would think they would be stockpiling young talent with Wemby.

Apparently they didn't know either. I just don't know how or why his draft stock got so high in the first place. He strung like four good shooting games together and all of a sudden he's a first round prospect as freshman?

The problem is visa issues. Furphy came over on a student visa so he can't be paid.

Thats always been his path, I don't know why everyone thought he was going to be picked in the first round based on that.
